Abstract:A series of low-dose high-valence Ti 4+ doped MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe) photocatalysts were synthesized for visible-light-driven CO 2 reduction. The highest CO 2 -to-CO conversion rate of Ti 4+ doped MIL-53-NH 2 (Fe) was 7.24 mmol g −1 h −1 and the highest CO selectivity was 94% in acetonitrile solvent using [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ and triethanolamine.

Abstract:Solar-light-driven reduction of CO2-to-CH4 is a complex process involving multiple elementary reactions and various by-products. Achieving high CH4 activity and selectivity therefore remain a significant challenge. Here we show a bioinspired photocatalyst with flexible dual-metal-site pairs (DMSPs), which exhibit dynamic self-adaptive behaviour to fit mutative C1 intermediates, achieving CO2-to-CH4 photoreduction. The Cu and Ni DMSPs in their respective single-site forms under flexible microenvironment are incorporated into a metal-organic framework (MOF) to afford MOF-808-CuNi. This dramatically boosts CH4 selectivity up to 99.4% (electron basis) and 97.5% (product basis), and results in a high production rate of 158.7 μmol g−1 h−1 with a sacrificial reagent. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the flexible self-adaptive DMSPs can stabilize various C1 intermediates in multistep elementary reactions, leading to highly selective CO2-to-CH4 process. This work demonstrates that efficient and selective heterogeneous catalytic processes can be achieved by stabilizing reaction intermediates via the self-adaptive DMSP mechanism.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is one of the most promising technologies to achieve efficient carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) under mild conditions. Herein, metalloporphyrin-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal centers, denoted as PCN-222, were utilized as visible-light photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Due to the combination of the conjugated planar macrocyclic structures of metalloporphyrins and the stable porous structures of MOFs, all PCN-222 materials exhibited excellent light-harvesting and CO2-adsorbing abilities. Among the studied MOFs of varied metal centers (M = Pt, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn), PCN-222(2H&Zn) exhibited the highest photocatalytic CO2RR performance, with an average CO yield of 3.92 μmol g−1 h−1 without any organic solvent or sacrificial agent. Furthermore, this was three and seven times higher than that of PCN-222(Zn) (1.36 μmol g−1 h−1) and PCN-222(2H) (0.557 μmol g−1 h−1). The superior photocatalytic activity of PCN-222(2H&Zn) was attributed to its effective photoexcited electron–hole separation and transportation compared with other PCN-222(2H&M) materials. The obtained results indicate that Zn ions in the porphyrin's center played an important role in the reaction of active sites for the adsorption–activation of CO2. In addition, PCN-222(2H&Zn) showed the highest CO2 selectivity (almost 100%) and stability. This work provides a clear guide for the design of efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)1–3 are known for their specific interactions with gas molecules4,5; combined with their rich and ordered porosity, this makes them promising candidates for the photocatalytic conversion of gas molecules to useful products6. Attempts to use MOFs or MOF-based composites for CO2 photoreduction6–13, however, usually result in far lower CO2 conversion efficiency compared to state-of-the-art solid-state or molecular catalysts14–18, even when facilitated by sacrificial reagents. Here, we create 'molecular compartments' inside a MOF by growing TiO2 inside different pores of MIL-101 and its derivatives (Fig. 1). This compartmentalization allows for synergy between the light-absorbing/electron-generating TiO2 units and the catalytic metal clusters in the MOFs, and therefore facilitates photocatalytic CO2 reduction, concurrent with production of O2. An apparent quantum efficiency for CO2 photoreduction of 11.3% at 350 nm, is observed in a composite, 42%-TiO2-in-Cr-MIL-101-NO2. TiO2 units in one type of compartment in this construct are estimated to be 44 times more active than those in the other type, underlining the role of precise positioning of TiO2 in this system.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COF), as a porous crystalline material, provides a versatile platform for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (PCO2RR). However, the lack of surface redox active sites and rapid photogenerated charge recombination are the major barriers limiting further enhancement of PCO2RR activity. Herein, we designed a novel photocatalytic system constructed from a dynamic D··M-A structure COF. The earth abundant metal iron sites were embedded into the triazinyl COF structure containing bipyridine units (Fe-bpy-COF), and the subsequent supplementation of pyridinethiol to the system allowed efficient CO2 photoreduction without additional photosensitizers. Remarkably, the Fe-bpy-COF system achieved an impressive formate yield of 4052 μmol g-1 h-1 and CO yield of 2123 μmol g-1 h-1, being over approximately 8.2-fold higher than that of the previously reported Re-COF under visible light irradiation. On the basis of 1H NMR titration experiments and steady-state tests of the absorption spectra, the superior photocatalytic performance is accordingly attributed to the dynamic coordination interaction between the pyridinethiol ligands and Fe-bpy-COF host, thus facilitating continuous double-electron transfer from the pyridinethiol ligands to the iron center under visible light and inhibiting photogenerated charge recombination in Fe-bpy-COF. Finally, the reaction pathways of CO2 conversion catalyzed by the reductive iron active species are elucidated by combining experimental results and density functional theory study. This provides unprecedented insights into the design of earth abundant metal-derived COF photocatalysts for efficient and selective CO2 reduction under visible light.

Engineering Single Cu Sites into Covalent Organic Framework for Selective Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals is a promising route but remains challenging due to poor product selectivity. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging class of porous materials are considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis. Incorporating metallic sites into COF is a successful strategy to realize high photocatalytic activities. Herein, 2,2'-bipyridine-based COF bearing non-noble single Cu sites is fabricated by chelating coordination of dipyridyl units for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The coordinated single Cu sites not only significantly enhance light harvesting and accelerate electron-hole separation but also provide adsorption and activation sites for CO2 molecules. As a proof of concept, the Cu-Bpy-COF as a representative catalyst exhibits superior photocatalytic activity for reducing CO2 to CO and CH4 without photosensitizer, and impressively, the product selectivity of CO and CH4 can be readily modulated only by changing reaction media. Experimental and theoretical results reveal the crucial role of single Cu sites in promoting photoinduced charge separation and solvent effect in regulating product selectivity, which provides an important sight onto the design of COF photocatalysts for selective CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an emerging class of platforms to assemble single site photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis. In this work, we report a new CO2 reduction photocatalyst (UiO-68-Fe-bpy) based on a robust Zr(iv)-MOF platform with incorporated Fe(bpy)Cl3 (bpy refers to the 4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridine] moiety) via amine-aldehyde condensation. We show that this hybrid catalyst can reduce CO2 to form CO under visible light illumination with excellent selectivity and enhanced activity with respect to its parent MOF and corresponding homogeneous counterpart. Using steady state and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, we show that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of UiO-68-Fe-bpy is attributed to the elongated excited state lifetime of Fe(bpy)Cl3 after being incorporated to the UiO-68-NH2 platform. This work demonstrates the great potential of MOFs as a next generation platform for solar fuel conversion.
Size Engineering of Metal–Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr)–Ag Hybrids for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Particle size-tuned photocatalytic activity has been recognized for noble metals such as platinum; however, it is not established for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this work, nanoscaled MOF MIL-101(Cr)-Ag nanoparticle hybrids with varied sizes ranging from 80 to 800 nm have been successfully achieved, and their size effect on photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light has been examined. We show that when the size of MIL-101(Cr)-Ag is reduced to 80 nm, the hybrid catalyst shows the highest CO2 photocatalytic reduction activity with remarkable production rates of 808.2 mu mol/g.h for CO and 427.5 mu mol/g.h for CH4, representing one of the most efficient hybrid catalysts. The high catalytic activity of the small-sized hybrid catalyst can be ascribed to the high density of unit cells on corners and edges of the catalyst, which are favorable for electron transfer in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction, supported by a set of complimentary photochemical and electrochemical methods.
Mimic Metalloenzymes with Atomically Dispersed Fe Sites into Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Enhanced CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The massive CO2 emissions from continuous increases in fossil fuel consumption have caused disastrous environmental and ecological crises. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold the potential to convert CO2 and water into value-added chemicals and O2 to mitigate this crisis. However, their activity and selectivity are very low under conditions close to natural photosynthesis. In this work, inspired by the photosynthesis process in natural leaves, we successfully anchored atomically dispersed Fe sites into interlayers of the photoactive triazine-based COF (Fe-COF) membrane to serve as a mimic metalloenzyme for the first time. It is found that under the conditions of gas-solid and no addition of any photosensitizer and sacrificial reagent, the highly crystalline Fe-COF membrane shows a record high CO2 photoreduction performance with the CO production of 3972 μmol g-1 in a 4 h reaction, ~100% selectivity of CO, and excellent cycling stability (at least 10 cycles). In such a remarkable photocatalytic CO2 conversion, the atomically dispersed Fe sites with high catalytic activity significantly reduce the formation energy barrier of key *CO2 and *COOH intermediates, the high-density triazine moieties supply more electrons to the iron catalytic center to promote CO2 reduction, and the homogeneous COF membrane greatly improves the electron/mass transport. Thus, this work opens a new window for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts and provides new insights into their structure-activity relationship in CO2 photocatalytic reduction.

Abstract:As a promising material with porous structure and large surface area, metal organic xerogel (MOX) has got extensive attention in the field of CO 2 photocatalytic reduction. The skeleton structure and pore morphology of organic xerogel framework materials contribute to the diffusion and transfer of CO 2 molecules. In this work, we prepared a serial of bimetallic Co/Fe-MOX by one-step solvent method, which can provide sufficient adsorption sites for CO 2 molecules. Meanwhile, the presence of cobalt and iron in Co/Fe-MOX enhances greatly not only the absorption and utilization of light energy in a synergistic manner, but also the separation and transfer of carriers. During the photocatalytic reduction process, the metal center of Co acts as major active site for photocatalysis. Therefore, the rapid conversion of CO 2 to CO is promoted. The Co/Fe-MOX with a molar ratio of 1:3 exhibits a high CO yield (67 μmol g −1 h −1 ), about 8.4 times that of Fe-MOX with a single Fe center (8 μmol g −1 h −1 ), implying the metal center Co acts as the main active site. This work provides ideas for designing metal organic xerogel materials with polymetallic centers for efficient photoreduction of CO 2 .

Abstract:Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal platforms for heterogeneous photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction. To further explore photocatalytic MOF systems, it is also necessary to consider their ability to fine-tune the microenvironments of the active sites, which affects their overall catalytic operation. Herein, a kind of ionic liquid (IL, here is 3-butyric acid-1-methyl imidazolium bromide, BAMeImBr) was anchored to iron-porphyrinic Zr-MOFs with different amounts to obtain ILx@MOF-526 (MOF-526 = Zr6O4(OH)4(FeTCBPP)3, FeTCBPP = iron 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(4'-carboxyphenyl)phenyl]-porphyrin, x = 100, 200, and 400). ILx@MOF-526 series was designed to investigate the effects of the microenvironmental and electronic structural modification on the efficiency and selectivity of the photochemical reduction of CO2 after introducing IL fragments. Compared to parent MOF-526, the production and selectivity of CO were greatly improved in the absence of any photosensitizer under visible light by the ILx@MOF-526 series. Among them, the CO yield of IL200@MOF-526 was up to 14.0 mmol g-1 within 72 h with a remarkable CO selectivity of 97%, which is superior to that of MOF-526 without BAMeIm+ modification and other amounts of BAMeIm+ loaded. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the mechanism of the CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The design of efficient photocatalysts is essential for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. With the goal of enhancing efficiency to produce C2+ products, in this study, we synthesized photocatalysts based on Fe-MOF composited with facet-engineered palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The synthesis involves in-situ reduction of palladium on the surface of Fe-MOF, namely MIL-100(Fe). When assessing the photocatalytic performance, the synthesized catalyst Pd(111)/MIL-100 exhibits photoelectron utilization efficiency of 21.4% for converting CO2 into C2+ products, surpassing the majority of previously reported works. The results show that MIL-100(Fe) loaded with Pd NPs exposed Pd(111) facet is superior for C2+ product selectivity compared with Pd(100)/MIL-100. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the difference between Pd(111)/MIL-100 and Pd(100)/MIL-100 may be attributed to the energy barriers required for the transition states during the reaction. This study offers an approach for designing photocatalytic catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and generating C2+ products.

Abstract:Facets exposed on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be responsible for the efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 conversion. Here, NH2-MIL-125(Ti) with exposed high-index {112} facets has been investigated in detail for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Compared with low-index facets, the high-index {112} facets exhibit superior activity for CO2-to-CO and CO2-to-CH4 conversions, which are 33 and 31 times higher for CO and CH4 productions than the {001}/{111} facets. The superior photocatalytic activity is attributed to the large CO2 uptake, efficient photoexcitation, charge separation and migration behaviors of the NH2-MIL-125(Ti) with exposing high-index facets. This study provides an effective strategy to develop MOFs catalysts via facet-engineering for targeted performance.

Abstract:AbstractRational engineering active sites and vantage defects of catalysts are promising but grand challenging task to enhance photoreduction CO2 to high value‐added C2 products. In this study, we designed an N,S‐codoped Fe‐based MIL‐88B catalyst with well‐defined bipyramidal hexagonal prism morphology via a facile and effective process, which was synthesized by addition of appropriate 1,2‐benzisothiazolin‐3‐one (BIT) and acetic acid to the reaction solution. Under simulated solar irradiation, the designed catalyst exhibits high C2H4 evolution yield of 17.7 μmol g−1⋅h, which has been rarely achieved in photocatalytic CO2 reduction process. The synergistic effect of Fe‐N coordinated sites and reasonable defects in the N,S‐codoped photocatalyst can accelerate the migration of photogenerated carriers, resulting in high electron density, and this in turn helps to facilitate the formation and dimerization of C−C coupling intermediates for C2H4 effectively.

Abstract:It is deemed as a desired approach to utilize solar energy for the conversion of CO2 into valuable products, and the majority of the MOFs-based photocatalytic reductions of CO2 have focused on formic acid (HCOOH) production with an organic solvent as the reaction medium. Herein, we report a solvent-free reaction route for the photoreduction of CO2 catalyzed by Fe-MOFs, namely, NH2-MIL-53(Fe) [(Fe(OH)(NH2-BDC)1 center dot G, NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) [Fe-3 O(H2O)(3) (NH2-BDC)(3)]Cl center dot G, and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) [Fe3O(H2O)(3) (NH2-BDC)(3)]Cl center dot G (NH2-BDC = 2-aminoterephthalic acid; G = guest and/or solvent molecules). Compared with the orthodox reaction route, the present out-of-the-way photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with superior selectivity to CO occurs at the gas-solid interface. The reaction procedure is environmentally friendly and provides a possibility to address the CO2 emission problem. Importantly, NH2-MIL-101(Fe) shows the highest photocatalytic activity among these Fe-MOFs due to its efficient charge separation and electron transfer.
Post-modification of metal-organic framework for improved CO2 photoreduction efficiency

Abstract:Utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to design photocatalysts for CO2 reduction catalysts is an excellent idea but currently restricted by the relatively low activity. Enhancing CO2 affinity and tuning the oxidation state of metal clusters in MOFs might be a solution to improve the catalytic performance. Herein, the Cl-bridge atoms in the metal clusters of a cobalt MOF were easily exchanged with OH−, which simultaneously oxidized a portion of Co(II) to Co(III) and resulted in a much enhanced photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction. In contrast, the original framework does not exhibit such superior activity. Comprehensive characterizations on their physicochemical properties revealed that the introduction of hydroxyl group not only greatly increases the CO2 affinity but also alters the oxidation state of metal clusters, resulting in significantly improved photocatalytic activities for CO2 reduction. This work provides important insight into the design of efficient photocatalysts.

Regulation of metal ions in smart metal-cluster nodes of metal-organic frameworks with open metal sites for improved photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited promising potential in the field of photocatalysis CO2 conversion, while improving the conversion activity of CO2 by regulating the metal species in the metal-cluster nodes of MOFs has not been systematically explored. Herein, we realized a substantial improvement of CO2 conversion activity by regulating the metal species in metal-cluster nodes of MOFs and obtain the best performance MOF photocatalysts for CO2 conversion. A stable MOF, PCN-250-Fe3 with Fe2IIIFeII metal-cluster nodes and open metal sites was synthesized, and we further improve its CO2 reduction activity by tuning the species of MII metal ions in the cluster. The photocatalytic results revealed that all bi-metallic PCN-250-Fe2M (M = Mn, Zn, Ni, Co) show better catalytic activity and selectivity for stable reducing CO2 into CO, compared with mono-metallic PCN-250-Fe3. Especially, PCN-250-Fe2Mn shows the maximum photocatalytic activity of 21.51 mmol h-1 g-1 under visible light irradiation, which is the best performance MOF-based photocatalyst for CO2 conversion on the similar reaction condition until now. Further investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of the second MII metal ions could promote the migration of photogenerated electrons to active sites and improve the CO2 adsorption and activation by favoring the CO2 reduction rout and restraining the production of hydrogen evolution intermediate.
