Abstract:This paper is devoted to a diachronic research on the politeness phenomena in ancient China, based on the corpus from one of the Chinese literary masterpieces, A Dream of Red Mansions. The paper re-examines FTA and revisits the three factors influencing people's choice of strategies in the contexts of ancient China: social distance, power relations, and absolute ranking of certain impositions, pointing out that: 1.) people's power relations usually derives from their social distance; 2.) power in ancient China may have different categories: absolute power, human-relation power, hierarchy power and hierarchy human-relation power; and 3.) in the hierarchy and so-called "seeking-agreement" society, many speech acts considered to be threatening one's face by Brown & Levinson actually threaten no one's face in ancient China. At last, the paper concludes five politeness principles in ancient China.

A Comparative Analysis of Impoliteness Strategies in Chinese and English Negative Movie Reviews: Take the Kung Fu Panda Movie Series as an Example

Abstract:Based on Culpeper’s ( Culpeper, 1996 ) impoliteness theory, this study collects negative online reviews of the movie Kung Fu Panda from the well-known movie review websites Douban and Rotten Tomatoes and comparatively analyzes the impoliteness strategies adopted from a cross-linguistic (Chinese and English) perspective. The study results show a commonality in the impoliteness strategies adopted by Chinese and English negative movie reviews, with positive impoliteness dominating in both Chinese and English negative movie reviews, and sarcasm being the least utilized impoliteness strategy. Meanwhile, there is a statistically significant difference between Chinese and English negative movie reviews in the use of on-record and off-record impoliteness strategies. The frequency of on-record impoliteness strategies was significantly higher in English reviews than in Chinese reviews, while Chinese reviews were more likely to use off-record impoliteness strategies. In addition, this study also observed that the frequency of on-record impoliteness strategy use was higher in reviews of low-rated movies than in high-rated movies. The findings provide film and television industry practitioners with insights related to using impoliteness strategies in negative movie reviews in a cross-cultural context and contribute to the study of impoliteness in online communication.

Abstract:Politeness is a social and linguistic phenomenon that exists in almost every culture. Despite its universality,the interpretation and understanding of politeness, the ways to realize politeness, and the standards of judgment differ in different cultures. Based on an analysis of Leech's Politeness Principle and Gu Yueguo's Politeness Principle, which can represent the Western and Chinese politeness theory model respectively, this paper intends to make a contrastive study of Chinese and Western linguistic politeness in terms of their responses towards praises and compliments , terms of address, privacy and taboo, value and modesty. We find that linguistic politeness strategy bears obvious cultural traits and is largely influenced by its culture, namely, religion, value and ethics etc. The contrastive analysis of the Chinese and Western linguistic politeness can hopefully boost cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:The study of “politeness” by sociolinguists is quite new and frequently cites Brown and Levinson’s work from 1978 entitled “Universals in Language Usage: Politeness Phenomena”. The article was modified and republished as a book in 1987 with the title Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage. Ever since, there has been a substantial explosion in the amount of research on “im/ politeness” in linguistics and related fields. Geoffrey Leech can be deemed one of the pioneering authors in the discipline of politeness studies, along with Robin Lakoff (1973), Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson (1978, 1987), and others. The Pragmatics of Politeness by Geoffrey Leech is a wonderful addition that serves to remind readers of the linguistic roots of this area of study. This book offers an overview of politeness and supports the idea that it is a form of communicative altruism. It describes a variety of English politeness phenomena and provides numerous instances of actual language use from reliable British and American sources to demonstrate its points. The book also presents a thorough examination of politeness in contemporary English, including all significant speech acts that are either positively or negatively linked with politeness, such as requests, apologies, compliments, offers, agreement, and disagreement. Chapters on impoliteness and the related concepts of irony (mock politeness) and banter (mock impoliteness) are also included. Additional chapters explore research techniques and learning English as a second language. The history of politeness in the English language, which spans more than a thousand years, is covered in the final chapter. Therefore, The Pragmatics of Politeness is intended to establish itself as a new benchmark in the study of (im)politeness.

Abstract:The paper focuses on the research of lexi cal and grammatical means of politeness as one of the universals in language usage, which expresses the concern of the speaker for interlocutors in particular social contexts. It considers four types of politeness as a linguistic phenomenon: showing the value and respect, softening t he communication, assisting in creating the eff ect of a compliment, and deliberating elimination of the importance of a request. In addition, the use of modal verbs and modal expressions are discussed. Furthermore, the paper outlines the concept of linguistic politeness and discusses its interaction with sociocultural variables. Finally, it describes the TALAS (Teaching and Learning Academic Subjects) web-application implemented in virtual English classrooms, which is equipped with tools for working with well-organized interactive assignments and contributes to acquiring knowledge on the linguistic means of expressing politeness. Key words: politeness, linguistic unit, grammatical form, sociocultural variable, virtual environment, web-application.

Abstract:This paper analyses politeness as one of the most important categories regulating communicative behaviour in a culture based on the codes of conduct of the 18th century. The latter played an important role in courtesy becoming a cultural value in German history. Through methods of description, component and contextual analysis, the author investigates what was considered polite discourse in the German society and what it depended on. Principal behavioural situations studied include greetings, expressing gratitude, apologies, bidding farewell, as well as table manners, etiquette of dancing and travelling, extending invitations, expressing condolences on a bereavement, congratulations on different occasions. Сompliment, a basic concept of eighteenth-century etiquette, is primarily understood as an etiquette formula applied to a particular etiquette situation. Addressing has two functions: addressing an utterance and reflection of the relationship between the addressee and the addressee, which is strictly regulated by the social status and position of both. One defining feature of etiquette statements in the codes of conduct is the active use of superlative forms. It is concluded that in the 18th century, the category of politeness was primarily an ethical one, which depended on the time, place and persons involved in discourse, first and foremost on their social status and gender. The novelty of the study lies in the material chosen and in studying the development of the politeness category in diachrony.

Abstract:Politeness plays an important role in regulating communication and enhancing social <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://interactions.Research" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> suggests that people treat interactive systems as social agents and may expect those systems to exhibit polite behavior. We augment early research in this area by proposing a framework that is grounded in sociolinguistics and pragmatics. The framework focuses on two complementary concepts - clarity and politeness. We suggest that these concepts are pertinent to various domains of interactive technologies and provide examples for the applicability of clarity and politeness rules to human-computer interaction (HCI). We conducted a laboratory experiment, in which politeness and clarity served as independent factors in the context of a cooperative computer game, based on the Peekaboom game. The manipulation of clarity failed, yet politeness was manipulated successfully based on the framework's rules of politeness. The results provide empirical support for the basic propositions of the framework and may facilitate more systematic research on politeness in various domains of social computing and other areas related to HCI.

Abstract:Computational approach to politeness is the task of automatically predicting and generating politeness in text. This is a pivotal task for conversational analysis, given the ubiquity and challenges of politeness in interactions. The computational approach to politeness has witnessed great interest from the conversational analysis community. This article is a compilation of past works in computational politeness in natural language processing. We view four milestones in the research so far, viz. supervised and weakly-supervised feature extraction to identify and induce politeness in a given text, incorporation of context beyond the target text, study of politeness across different social factors, and study the relationship between politeness and various sociolinguistic cues. In this article, we describe the datasets, approaches, trends, and issues in computational politeness research. We also discuss representative performance values and provide pointers to future works, as given in the prior works. In terms of resources to understand the state-of-the-art, this survey presents several valuable illustrations, most prominently, a table summarizing the past papers along different dimensions, such as the types of features, annotation techniques, and datasets used.

Compliment responses in Hong Kong: an application of Leech’s pragmatics of politeness

Abstract:Abstract This paper focusses on compliment responses in the context of group undergraduate student projects, in a university in Hong Kong. It applies Geoffrey Leech’s model of politeness. Although less well known than some other politeness models, it has proved relatively popular in studies of compliment responses, which are often said to involve a clash between the Maxim of Agreement (achieved by agreeing with the complimenter) and the Maxim of Modesty (achieved by mitigating the compliment, thereby disagreeing with the complimenter). This study deploys Leech’s most recent work on politeness in the study of compliment responses. Using an innovative variant of the discourse completion task adapted to WhatsApp to collect text messages and metapragmatic comments from undergraduate students in Hong Kong on their messages, it reveals that acceptance strategies are overwhelmingly the most frequent type. This finding adds to the small body of work on compliment responses in Hong Kong cultures, and, more generally, to cross-cultural pragmatics studies on compliment responses. However, the interpretation of this result needs to attend to the detail. The key specific acceptance strategy in our data is the expression of gratitude, and this, we argue, is best accounted for through the Maxim of Obligation, a maxim proposed in Leech’s more recent work.

Should We Respect LLMs? A Cross-Lingual Study on the Influence of Prompt Politeness on LLM Performance

Abstract:We investigate the impact of politeness levels in prompts on the performance of large language models (LLMs). Polite language in human communications often garners more compliance and effectiveness, while rudeness can cause aversion, impacting response quality. We consider that LLMs mirror human communication traits, suggesting they align with human cultural norms. We assess the impact of politeness in prompts on LLMs across English, Chinese, and Japanese tasks. We observed that impolite prompts often result in poor performance, but overly polite language does not guarantee better outcomes. The best politeness level is different according to the language. This phenomenon suggests that LLMs not only reflect human behavior but are also influenced by language, particularly in different cultural contexts. Our findings highlight the need to factor in politeness for cross-cultural natural language processing and LLM usage.

Abstract:The article presents major ways of implementing linguistic politeness in electronic communication of the German linguocultural community. Following basic communicative principles of positive politeness, the authors analyze such e-mails speech acts as greeting, appeal, parting, congratulations, wishes, gratitude, that actualize strategies of positive politeness, or strategies of reconciliation in the virtual interaction of communicants. In German linguoculture the communicative strategies of reconciliation are the attention-and-care strategy, the strategy of using in-group identity markers, the strategy of exaggeration, the strategy of giving communicative gifts, the strategy of demonstrating intense interest; their implementation is supported with various means and methods of expressiveness, including contact appeals, adjectives, pronoun viel, modal verb mögen, performative verbs of wishes and gratitude, subjunctive mood, etc. It is stated that the communicative strategies of politeness are aimed at preserving the positive face of the addressee, that is, satisfying the needs of a person to show attention, care, interest, sympathy, love towards the addressee. It should be noted that study of the principle of politeness in email writing is viewed as a priority for German linguoculture, since communication via e-mail is one of the most popular and common ways of virtual written communication both at home and in business.

Abstract:The study of the mechanisms of politeness in society has been a subject of interest for scholars of linguistics since the 20th century with the development of pragmatics and sociology. The aim of the current article is to introduce the most popular politeness theories as well as investigate how linguistic politeness is understood and used by students of English. We have conducted a social survey with students of English at the Department of European languages and Communication to see how well they perceive linguistic politeness in its two forms – negative and positive – as suggested by Brown and Levinson in their seminal work “Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage”. As a result, we have arrived at some interesting conclusions with regards to the way the students understand the two types of politeness, and at the same time we have offered some ways of improving the “lacuna” in their knowledge in relation to the appropriate use of politeness in interaction.
