Abstract:: Humor is a panacea for life, which can help people face difficulties and facts of life pleasantly. With the development of pragmatics and the popularization of interdisciplinary research, there has been an increasing tendency in integrating verbal humor with pragmatics. From the perspective of Cooperation Principle, this paper studies and dissects the generation mechanism of verbal humor. Taking the American sitcom Young Sheldon as a case study, this paper analyzes the dialogues of Young Sheldon by means of the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle: quantity, quality, relation, and manner, and discusses the reason why characters violate the Cooperative Principle and the way how characters achieve verbal humor by violating the Cooperative Principle. This research can let English learners better understand the generation mechanism of verbal humor, so as to better appreciate verbal humor.

Abstract:Humor can be seen everywhere in social communication, and it often appears in conversation in the form of verbal humor. In western culture, humor, regarded as a sort of linguistic art, is a window to understand western culture. Thus, humor comprehension has important practical significance for English learners to better understand, master and use English. This study, based on theories of Conversational Implicature, attempts to analyze the production of verbal humor from the perspective of Cooperative Principle, and an abundance of humorous conversations from the sitcom, 2 Broke Girls, are collected as analytical material as well, aiming to cultivate English learners’ comprehensive ability of American humorous utterances and to improve their intercultural communication competence.
A Study of American Verbal Humor in The Big Bang Theory from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle

Abstract:Many scholars have conducted extensive and in-depth research on verbal humor from the perspective of pragmatics. However, there are insufficient pragmatic researches on different forms of verbal humor. This paper tries to explore the characteristics of American humor, selecting American verbal humor as research theme, dialogues of the famous American sitcom The Big Bang Theory as research corpus, and the principle of cooperation as theoretical basis. A large number of examples are used in the thesis to explain in detail how the humorous effects of American verbal humor are produced by violating the principle of cooperation. Through analysis, this paper finds the following things. Firstly, in American verbal humor, the humorous effects are often produced by means of ambiguity and rhetoric in dialogue. Secondly, on the subject of humor, American humor tends to produce humorous effects on topics related to religion, sex as well as the relationship between men and women. With the advancement of cultural exchanges between China and the United States, more and more American comedy works have entered the Chinese market. This paper intends to help people improve their understandings of American humor and better feel the charm of American humor so as to achieve better effect in cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Grice’s Cooperative Principle (CP) was originally presented at Harvard University in 1967 as part of the William James lectures. Once established, Cooperative Principle had a widespread impact on a range of scholar activity, from work interested in the narrowest issues of language meaning to work interested in the broadest questions of social communication. As is known, verbal humor is a genre of linguistics interaction that often emerges in daily conversation. This paper is aimed at probing into the linguistic basis involved in the process of language humor from the perspective of Grice’s CP. It is also intended to reveal the relation between creation of humor and violation of cooperative principle, and then give critical comments on Grice’s cooperative principle, which mainly focuses on limitations Grice’s cooperative principle. Finally, the essay has a natural conclusion for contribution of study pragmatics of conversational principle, and its application in other fields.

Abstract:Mock impoliteness is defined as a specific form of politeness, one in which participants in a conversation perceive acts such as jocular mockery, insults and banter as non-impolite (Haugh, Michael & Derek Bousfield. 2012. Mock impoliteness in interactions amongst Australian and British speakers of English. Journal of Pragmatics 44. 1099–1114). Following the model of the third wave of politeness and Sinkeviciute, Valeria (2019. Conversational humour and (im) politeness: A pragmatic analysis of social interaction . Amsterdam: John Benjamins), the aim of this paper is twofold. First, it seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon in colloquial conversation. Second, it illustrates this in a language other than English, specifically Peninsular Spanish, using data on informal interactions. The database is composed of 148 humorous sequences from the VALESCO.HUMOR corpus (http://www.observahumor.com/corpus_valesco). 25.67 % of these were identified and analyzed as mock impoliteness, using a tentative procedure for exploring humor negotiation in mock impoliteness through the assessment of a number of elements. These included the issue of which linguistic and paralinguistic elements are used by participants, and the interpretation of the initial aggressive style focused on the target, be it the recipient in a conversation or an absent third party (Béal, Christine & Kerry Mullan. 2017. The pragmatics of conversational humour in social visits: French and Australian English. Language & Communication 55. 24–40). Finally, we considered the question of whether or not the humor introduced by mock impoliteness was sustained throughout a sequence. When a target is oriented to a recipient in the exchange, the data shows a trend towards strengthening social bonds with the group and sustaining humor across the sequence. In other cases, however, the recipient might feel offended or insulted and hence respond in a serious mode, the main effect of the humor then being to create social distance within the participant group. When the target is oriented to an absent third party, humor tends to serve to reinforce cohesiveness between the group at the expense of others.
A Comparative Analysis of Impoliteness Strategies in Chinese and English Negative Movie Reviews: Take the Kung Fu Panda Movie Series as an Example

Abstract:Based on Culpeper’s ( Culpeper, 1996 ) impoliteness theory, this study collects negative online reviews of the movie Kung Fu Panda from the well-known movie review websites Douban and Rotten Tomatoes and comparatively analyzes the impoliteness strategies adopted from a cross-linguistic (Chinese and English) perspective. The study results show a commonality in the impoliteness strategies adopted by Chinese and English negative movie reviews, with positive impoliteness dominating in both Chinese and English negative movie reviews, and sarcasm being the least utilized impoliteness strategy. Meanwhile, there is a statistically significant difference between Chinese and English negative movie reviews in the use of on-record and off-record impoliteness strategies. The frequency of on-record impoliteness strategies was significantly higher in English reviews than in Chinese reviews, while Chinese reviews were more likely to use off-record impoliteness strategies. In addition, this study also observed that the frequency of on-record impoliteness strategy use was higher in reviews of low-rated movies than in high-rated movies. The findings provide film and television industry practitioners with insights related to using impoliteness strategies in negative movie reviews in a cross-cultural context and contribute to the study of impoliteness in online communication.

Abstract:Man with a Plan, starring Golden Globe winner Matt LeBlanc, is a distinct representative of American sitcoms. The language in the play is close to real life and extremely humorous. There are a large number of conversational fragments in all kinds of situations that defy the maxim of the cooperative principle and create unexpected humorous effects. This paper attempts to adopt the cooperative principle theory of Grice to analyze the speech phenomenon that violates the cooperative principle in the dramas and figure out the production mechanism of verbal humor and its particularized conversational implicature from the quantity, quality, relation and manner maxims respectively.
The Impact of Culture and Social Distance on Humor Appreciation, Sharing, and Production

Abstract:Building on the benign violation theory and self-construal theory, we conducted four studies to examine how culture and social distance would influence humor appreciation, sharing, and production. Study 1 found that Chinese participants appreciated and intended to share a joke involving distant others more than that involving close others. They also generated funnier titles for a joke involving distant others than close others. Studies 2a and 2b compared Chinese and Americans using various types of jokes, replicating the social distance effect among Chinese but finding little effect of social distance among Americans. In Study 3, interdependence-primed participants generated more humorous titles for a joke involving distant than close others, whereas independence-primed participants showed no effect of social distance. The research provides further support to the benign violation theory from a cultural perspective and has important implications for cross-cultural communications.

Abstract:Impoliteness and offensive behaviors by anonymous netizens are features of essential significance in computer-mediated communication(CMC).On account of particularity of this very communicative setting,resembling daily verbal communication,there is a good deal of face-threatening acts(FTA) in CMC.The present paper aims to examine the applicability of the impoliteness model by Culpeper and Bousfield in Chinese computer-mediated communication,and to postulate several Chinese-specific impoliteness strategies,pointing out that study of multimodal impoliteness is a dominating trend for subsequent research consideration and Chinese dialectical datasets are new orientation for data selecting in empirical research into impoliteness.
Contextual Dimensions in Interactional Humour: How Humour is Practiced in Selected American and Chinese Situation Comedies

Abstract:Situation comedies are a form of performing arts deliberately created to arouse laughter in the audience. As such, they serve as a rich corpus for the linguistic analysis of interpersonal and interactional humour. The effectiveness of interactional humour is strongly dependent on the context in which intended meanings are exchanged and understood. In this paper, I develop a framework of contextual dimensions (physical, temporal and experiential) which is used to describe how humour is communicated in social interactions. An analysis is conducted to study the mechanisms of humour embedded in interpersonal interactions in the American situation comedy "Friends" and the Chinese situation comedy "I Love My Family". The results of the analysis show that the frequency of humour is just under 50% in both sitcoms, bearing a remarkable consistency. Overall, "Friends" is found to be more palatable to an international audience compared to "I Love My Family". The greater utilization of the temporal contextual dimension and the lesser utilization of the experiential contextual dimension for "Friends" compared to "I Love My Family" means that the former depends more on linguistic and logical elements and less on social and cultural knowledge in order to achieve the humourous effects. Abstract:Humor is a universal phenomenon but is also culturally tinted. In this article, we reviewed the existing research that investigates how culture impacts individuals' humor perception and usage as well as humor's implications for psychological well-being. Previous research has substantiated evidence that Easterners do not hold as positive an attitude toward humor as their Western counterparts do. This perception makes Easterners less likely to use humor as a coping strategy in comparison with Westerners. Despite this difference, Westerners and Easterners have similar patterns in the relationship between their humor and psychological well-being index, though the strength of the relationship varies across cultures. Implications and potential future research avenues discussed.

Abstract:The theory of conversational implicature proposed by H.P.Grice in 1967 has always been regarded as the focus of pragmatics. Its basic theory includes the four principles of verbal communication. The cooperative principle is the specific requirement of the theory of conversational implicature. Geoffrey Leech put forward the politeness principle to complement the cooperative principle. The cooperative principle and the politeness principle play an important role in people's communication. In the process of generating and understanding discourse, both parties in the conversation need to use them flexibly. This study selects the classic dialogues in the novel Besieged City as the text, and tries to analyse the conversational implicature arising from the violation of the principles of cooperation and politeness. It is found that conversational implicature can produce certain literary effects in literary works, and the successful achievement of conversational effect needs the comprehensive support of context, cooperation between both parties in the conversation, and social and cultural environment.

Abstract:With the development of social media, advertising has migrated from traditional media to social media. Marketers are increasingly using social media’s brand pages to actively create humorous dialogue interactions with other brands for brand communication to achieve positive business outcomes. Especially brand-to-brand’s aggressive humor dialogue can also be an effective brand communication strategy. Based on benign violation theory, we have studied the influence mechanism and boundary condition of the brand-to-brand’s aggressive humor styles (low-aggressive and high-aggressive) on consumer engagement behavioral intention in social media context. Through experiments, it is indicated that low-aggressive humor could promote consumer engagement behavioral intention more than high-aggressive humor. Benign appraisal mediates the relationship between low-aggressive humor and consumer engagement behavioral intention. Furthermore, brand personality not only moderates the effect of low-aggressive humor on consumer engagement behavioral intention, but also moderates the mediating role of benign appraisal between low-aggressive humor and consumer engagement behavior intention.

Abstract:Humour is one of essential aspects to communicate with other people comfortably. Most of verbal humours, especially implicit humours generate because people break Grice’s four conversational maxims. Concerning this phenomenon, this research aims to find out types of non-observance of cooperative principle found in verbal humour, which uttered by the characters in British Situational Comedy Miranda. Qualitative method was adapted to analyze the data, which was conducted through identifying, classifying, interpreting the data. Humorous utterances from nine episodes of Miranda were the primary sources of data. In collecting the data, the researchers observed the whole episodes and the scripts, checked the suitability, took a note, and classified it into tables. The study concludes that there are four types of non-observance of cooperative principle, namely violating, flouting, infringing, and opting out a maxim. The result reveals that there are 80 humorous utterances, which do not obey the maxim. There are 66 utterances (82,5%) of flouting maxim, 10 utterances (12,5%) violation maxim, 3 utterances (3,75%) of infringing maxim, and 1 utterance (1,25%) of opting out maxim which are found in the sitcom.

Abstract:Politeness is a social and linguistic phenomenon that exists in almost every culture. Despite its universality,the interpretation and understanding of politeness, the ways to realize politeness, and the standards of judgment differ in different cultures. Based on an analysis of Leech's Politeness Principle and Gu Yueguo's Politeness Principle, which can represent the Western and Chinese politeness theory model respectively, this paper intends to make a contrastive study of Chinese and Western linguistic politeness in terms of their responses towards praises and compliments , terms of address, privacy and taboo, value and modesty. We find that linguistic politeness strategy bears obvious cultural traits and is largely influenced by its culture, namely, religion, value and ethics etc. The contrastive analysis of the Chinese and Western linguistic politeness can hopefully boost cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Humor is a kind of cognitive psychology activity, and it is diverse among individuals. One of the main characteristics of talk shows is to produce humorous discourse to make the audience laugh; however, rare studies have made a deeper comparative investigation on the rhetorical strategies in different language humorous utterances. Therefore, the current study adopted a mixed method of sequential explanatory design to identify the types of rhetorical strategies in the monolog verbal humor of Chinese and English talk shows, examine their similarities and differences. Two hundred monolog samples from 2016 to 2022, which consisted of 100 monologs of Chinese talk shows (CTS) and 100 monologs of English talk shows (ETS), were downloaded from the internet as language corpus. Berger's theory was adopted to identify the types of rhetorical strategies. Based on the obtained findings, this study found that both language talk show hosts use a variety type of rhetorical strategies to produce humorous discourse. The comparison of similarities and differences revealed that the most frequently used rhetorical strategies in both talk shows were almost similar (e.g., satire, exaggeration, facetiousness, and ridicule), but the percentage of usage of these various rhetorical strategies in both talk shows was slightly different. Interestingly, misunderstanding occurred 20 times in CTS but was not found in ETS. Meanwhile, simile and personification were used more often in ETS. Conclusively, this study contributes valuable insights on the use of different types of rhetorical strategies to create verbal humor in different language contexts.
