Abstract:The CO oxidation mechanisms over three different MnN2-doped graphene (MnN2C2: MnN2C2-hex, MnN2C2-opp, MnN2C2-pen) structures were investigated through first-principles calculations. The vacancy in graphene can strongly stabilize Mn atoms and make them positively charged, which promotes O(2)activation and weakens CO adsorption. Hence, CO oxidation activity is enhanced and the catalyst is prevented from being poisoned. CO oxidation reaction (COOR) on MnN(2)C(2)along the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism will leave one O atom on the Mn atom, which is difficult to react with isolated CO. COOR on MnN2C2-opp along the ER mechanism and termolecular Eley-Rideal (TER) mechanism need overcome low energy barriers in the rate limiting step (RLS), which are 0.544 and 0.342 eV, respectively. The oxidation of CO along TER mechanism on MnN2C2-opp is the best reaction pathway with smallest energy barrier. Therefore, the MnN2C2-opp is an efficient catalysis and this study has a guiding role in designing effective catalyst for CO oxidation.

Density Functional Theory Study of CO2 Hydrogenation on Transition-Metal-Doped Cu(211) Surfaces

Abstract:The massive emission of CO2 has caused a series of environmental problems, including global warming, which exacerbates natural disasters and human health. Cu-based catalysts have shown great activity in the reduction of CO2, but the mechanism of CO2 activation remains ambiguous. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu(211)-Rh, Cu(211)-Ni, Cu(211)-Co, and Cu(211)-Ru surfaces. The doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru was found to enhance CO2 hydrogenation to produce COOH. For CO2 hydrogenation to produce HCOO, Ru plays a positive role in promoting CO dissociation, while Rh, Ni, and Co increase the barriers. These results indicate that Ru is the most effective additive for CO2 reduction in Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru alters the electronic properties of Cu, and the activity of Cu-based catalysts was subsequently affected according to differential charge analysis. The analysis of Bader charge shows good predictions for CO2 reduction over Cu-based catalysts. This study provides some fundamental aids for the rational design of efficient and stable CO2-reducing agents to mitigate CO2 emission.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been extensively studied due to their highly dispersed atomic levels, which greatly improve the distribution of active sites and maximum utilization of the catalyst. In this study, Mn-based SACs were modeled on N-doped graphene with single and double vacancy defects, and 11 types of MnN(x)models containing various three- and four-coordinate structures were considered. The ORR overpotential of MnN3(MnN4) was lowest in the three-coordinate structure (four-coordinate structure), which was selected to study catalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and reaction mechanism. The best reaction path for ORR on MnN(4)is *O-2 -> *O + H2O -> *OH -> H2O and the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) is 0.172 eV. According to the adsorption energy competition, the best catalytic performance of MnN(4)was selected to study the various reaction mechanisms of carbon monoxide oxidation (COOR). The best reaction path is the CO oxidation on MnN(4)along the termolecular Eley-Rideal (TER) with a RDS energy barrier of 0.218 eV. These results suggest that MnN(4)is a promising bifunctional catalyst.

Abstract:The active centers of carbon nonplatinum catalysts doped with cobalt, iron, nickel, and copper have been simulated by quantum-chemical density functional theory methods. The thermodynamics of the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on model catalysts has been determined. It was found that among the studied catalysts, graphene doped with cobalt and iron showed the best properties. A two-state reactivity effect has been found on a cobalt-containing catalyst, and a more detailed reaction mechanism has been proposed, including the stages of charging by an extra electron and association with water. The proposed mechanism explains several effects that have arisen during the modeling in relation to the classical mechanism.

Abstract:The non‐noble Mn coordinated N, P co‐doping graphene materials were investigated theoretically in this work based on density functional theory calculation. The electronic structure is effectively tuned after the introduction of P heteroatom. The moderate d band center and density of states at Fermi energy of MnN4‐P1‐G indicate that it is of modest adsorption ability for these O‐containing intermediates. The rank of adsorption energies of O‐containing intermediates for MnN4‐P1‐G is OH* > 2OH* > OOH* > O* > O2* > H2O*, whereas the MnN4‐P1‐G favors a four‐electron process instead of two‐electron process. The doping of P on MnN4‐P1‐G can increase the kinetic activity for the rate‐determining step as well as the Ulim for MnN4‐P1‐G significantly increases from 0.38 to 0.45 V compared with MnN4‐G. The spin density and magnetic moments of Mn are effectively tuned by d, p hybridization to lower the adsorption energy of OH intermediates (rate‐determining step [RDS]) so as to improve the catalytic activity. It is concluded that the P‐doped MnN4 catalysts with excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity can be obtained and this study can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of high‐performance Mn‐based carbon materials catalysts.

Abstract:Room temperature, low-cost and efficient single-atom catalysts for the CO oxidation was essential for the pollutant-free biological and ecological environment. Herein, the oxidation mechanism of CO on manganese (Mn) and nitrogen (N) co-doped single-vacancy graphene (MnN-SV) and double-vacancy graphene (MnN-DV) are studied through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MnN-SV have a more excellent catalytic performance for CO oxidation compared to MnN-DV due to the synergistic effect of the Mn and N atoms and the ligand effect. CO oxidation on MnN-SV results into two CO2 via the termolecular Eley–Rideal (TER) mechanism whose energy barrier of rate determining step (RDS) is 0.351 eV, indicating superior catalytic performance compared to the most known catalysts. In addition, MnN-SV catalyzes CO via the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism with only an energy barrier of RDS is 0.727 eV, and the energy barrier for the second CO2 generated by Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism is 0.691 eV. Technologically, present results provide a pathway for the development of an efficient and low-cost catalysts to oxidize CO at room temperature.

Abstract:Development of highly efficient, cost effective heteronuclear catalysts has been a huge interest in recent years due to its prime importance in environmental perpetuation. Among the developed catalysts, heteroatom-doped graphene catalysts for CO oxidation have attracted a global attention, due to its unique electronic properties suitable for CO oxidation. In this work, the oxidation mechanism of CO on various VIIIB dimeric metal-doped graphene with four atom vacancies systems () were investigated systematically by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. After a detailed analytic investigation through competition of adsorption performance and stability, , and were found to be highly efficient and suitable as CO oxidation catalysts. Further, the heteronuclear dimeric catalysts ( and ) were found to possess better catalytic activity over homonuclear dimeric catalyst () with much lower energy barrier for CO oxidation (0.79 eV, 0.49 eV, 0.42 eV for , , ). This investigation opens a new direction in designing the efficient and cost-effective graphene-based catalysts and also provides important hints for the understanding of catalytic reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation catalysis, which provides guidance and ideas for subsequent experimental synthesis of low-cost and efficient catalysts.

Abstract:The mechanism of CO oxidation on two-dimensional porphyrin sheet (TDPS)-supported single atom manganese was studied using density functional theory with dispersion (DFT-D). The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation based on the first principles has been used for confirming Mn–TDPS stability. The energetic calculations indicated that CO and O2 were favorable to co-adsorb at the active center. Eley–Rideal, Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH), and tri-molecular Eley–Rideal (TER) mechanisms were used to investigate the reaction pathways of CO oxidation on the Mn–TDPS. Results indicated that the LH and TER reaction mechanisms were feasible due to the small energy barrier of the rate-determining step. Moreover, the oxidation states of the active center of Mn–TDPS affected the reaction barrier and reaction heat, which was unfavorable for CO oxidation in Mn–TDPS. These results findings suggested that Mn–TDPS could be a high activity catalyst for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide oxidation is a famous typical polyphase catalytic reaction, which can convert toxic gases into non-toxic substances, thus reducing environmental pollution. The traditional catalytic reaction has high energy barriers and low energy efficiency, while the single metal atom was inserted into the thin graphene with excellent electronic properties to form a special structure, which has extraordinary catalytic properties. Based on the first principle calculation method, the different reaction mechanism of CO oxidation in nitrogen co-doped single vacancy and double vacancy (FeN-SV and FeN-DV) was studied systematically, and its stable structure was analyzed to find the optimal catalytic reaction path. For FeN-SV, the energy barriers of a new trimolecular co-adsorption mechanism (2*CO+*O2→*OOCO+*CO→*O+*CO+CO2→*CO21→*CO22), which has not been reported yet, was only 0.525 eV. The rate-determining step (RDS) for FeN-SV (FeN-DV) is *CO+*O2→*OOCO→*O+CO2→*O+CO→CO2, which is also very beneficial to CO oxidation, was 0.604 eV (0.660 eV). The findings revealed FeN-SV and FeN-DV can be used as a low cost, high efficiency for CO catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:Man-made artificial graphene has attracted significant attention in the past few years due to the possibilities to construct designer Dirac fermions with unexpected topological properties and applications in nanoelectronics. Here we use a first-principles approach within density-functional theory to study molecular graphene similarly to the experiment by Gomes et al. [Nature (London) 483, 306 (2012)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/nature10941]. The system comprises carbon monoxide molecules arranged on a copper (111) surface in such a way that a honeycomb lattice is obtained with the characteristic electronic properties of graphene. Our results show in detail how carbon monoxide molecules modify the copper surface (and regions beneath) and create a honeycomb lattice of accumulated electrons between the adsorbate molecules. We also demonstrate how the properties of the formed Dirac fermions change as the CO density is tuned, and provide a direct comparison with experimental scanning tunneling microscope images.

Abstract:In this work, the detailed oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance of M-N4−xOx (M = Fe, Co, and Ni; x =1−4) has been explored via the detailed density functional theory method. The results suggest that the formation energy of M-N4−xOx shows a good linear relationship with the number of doped O atoms. The adsorption manner of O2 on M-N4−xOx changed from end-on (x = 1 and 2) to side-on (x = 3 and 4), and the adsorption strength gradually increased. Based on the results for binding strength of ORR intermediates and the Gibbs free energy of ORR steps on the studied catalysts, we screened out two highly active ORR catalysts, namely Co-N3O1 and Ni-N2O2, which possess very small overpotentials of 0.27 and 0.32 V, respectively. Such activities are higher than the precious Pt catalyst. Electronic structure analysis reveals one of the reasons for the higher activity of Co-N3O1 and Ni-N2O2 is that they have small energy gaps and moderate highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels. Furthermore, the results of the density of states reveal that the O doping can improve the electronic structure of the original catalyst to tune the adsorption of the ORR intermediates.

Abstract:Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) crystal of carbon atoms packed in a honeycomb lattice. Because of this unique structure, it shows a number of intriguing properties. Interface between neighboring 2D layers or between 2D overlayers and substrate surfaces provides confined space for chemical process. The interlayer spacing between bilayer graphenes of van der Waals material is expected to modify the properties of atoms and molecules confined at the atomic interfaces. In this paper, the carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O) in bilayer graphene are studied by density functional theory (DFT). The quantitative relationship between the interlayer spacing of bilayer graphene ( d ) and the reaction energy barrier ( \begin{document}$ {{E_{\rm{a}}}} $\end{document} ) is obtained. Five values of d between 4.7 Å and 5.9 Å are used. The calculated results show that the total energy of the initial state, the transition state, the final state system and the reaction barrier are sensitive to the variation of the interlayer distance: the reaction barrier increases gradually with interlayer distance decreasing. The calculated energy barrier is 1.13 eV when the interlayer distance is 4.7 Å, while the energy barrier is 0.39 eV when the interlayer distance is 5.9 Å. It is also found that adsorption energy between O and graphene at the top site and the bridge site increase gradually with interlayer distance decreasing. Therefore, the atomic-level regulation of the reaction barrier can be achieved by changing the interlayer spacing of bilayer graphene. The charge density difference shows that when the distance between two layers of graphene is small, there is an obvious charge accumulation between C atoms in transition state O—C=O and C atoms in the upper or lower layer of graphene. This results in sp orbital hybridization, which leads the interaction between two C atoms to be enhanced. It is difficult to form a weak O—C bond of transition state O—C=O with O atoms adsorbed on graphene because of a binding force which exists in the z -axis direction. The DFT calculation of CO oxidation reaction barrier can be reduced by adjusting the spacing of bilayer graphene, which provides a theoretical support for the application of graphene and the preparation of new carbon-based intercalated composites.

Abstract:To find an efficient catalyst to catalytic conversion of hazardous gases maybe the important way for solving environmental problems. We performed the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the CO oxidation by using N2O as an oxidizing agent over an Pt-Graphene catalyst. The results indicated that CO oxidation by N2O on Pt-Graphene may occur via two pathways: (1) Adsorption of N2O followed by CO and (2) Adsorption of CO followed by N2O. Although the CO was more likely to adsorb on the Pt-Graphene than N2O, but when the Pt site was first covered by the CO, the higher barrier energy (20.28 kcal/mol) would limit the reaction to react. However, the N2O molecule was first decomposed on the Pt-site yielding the N-2 and O-Pt-Graphene, which was an active species for the CO oxidation. Thus, control of the adsorbing molecules over Pt-Graphene might be a key factor for the activity of the catalyst, and this may open new avenues in searching for oxidation of CO at an economical cost.
Catalytic Oxidation Mechanism of CO on FeN2-doped Graphene

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) can maximize the utilization of metal atoms and reduce manufacturing costs, so they have been extensively studied. This study used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to discuss in detail the CO oxidation reaction (COOR) mechanism on non-noble metal iron and nitrogen atoms co-doped graphene. It was determined that FeN2-Gra is a suitable catalyst for the COOR due to its stable configuration, adsorption performance, kinetic analysis, and catalytic activity. The optimal path for FeN2-Gra on COOR is the LH mechanism, in which the lowest energy barrier that FeN2C2-hex needs to cross through the LH mechanism is 0.270 eV. The rate limiting steps (RLS) of FeN2C2-opp and FeN2C2-pen along the LH mechanism are 0.673 eV and 0.697 eV, respectively. According to the theoretical analysis, FeN2-Gra is a low-cost, high-efficiency catalyst suitable for COOR, which provides new ideas for subsequent experimental guidance and synthesis of ideal catalysts with superior catalytic performance.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains challenging due to its complexity and slow kinetics. In particular, Pt-based catalysts which possess outstanding ORR activity are limited in application with high cost and ease of poisoning. In recent years, nitrogen-doped graphene has been widely studied as a potential ORR catalyst for replacing Pt. However, the vague understanding of the reaction mechanism and active sites limits the potential ORR activity of nitrogen-doped graphene materials. Herein, density functional theory is used to study the reaction mechanism and active sites of nitrogen-doped graphene for ORR at the atomic level, focusing on explaining the important role of nitrogen species on ORR. The results reveal that graphitic N (GrN) doping is beneficial to improve the ORR performance of graphene, and dual-GrN-doped graphene can demonstrate the highest catalytic properties with the lowest barriers of ORR. These results provide a theoretical guide for designing catalysts with ideal ORR property, which puts forward a new approach to conceive brilliant catalysts related to energy conversion and environmental catalysis.

Abstract:Metal-free catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a research hotspot to enhance CO2 utilization as a way to counteract global warming. Nitrogen-doped graphene attracts attention because of the abundance of nitrogen and promising catalytic performance of graphene. In this work, we investigated various N-doped configurations and their corresponding catalytic abilities for CO2RR to ethanol via spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) computations. The final results indicate that site 43 of binary-N-doped graphene had high CO2RR activity, stable adsorption of reactants, and good activation of CO2. The catalysis process demonstrated features of low free energy barriers in the rising stage and obvious facilitation of the potential-limiting step. Compared with a catalyst-free process, it can effectively improve the reaction activity. The results provide theoretical guidance for the design and preparation of high-performance CO2RR catalysts.
