Abstract:The CO oxidation mechanisms over three different MnN2-doped graphene (MnN2C2: MnN2C2-hex, MnN2C2-opp, MnN2C2-pen) structures were investigated through first-principles calculations. The vacancy in graphene can strongly stabilize Mn atoms and make them positively charged, which promotes O(2)activation and weakens CO adsorption. Hence, CO oxidation activity is enhanced and the catalyst is prevented from being poisoned. CO oxidation reaction (COOR) on MnN(2)C(2)along the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism will leave one O atom on the Mn atom, which is difficult to react with isolated CO. COOR on MnN2C2-opp along the ER mechanism and termolecular Eley-Rideal (TER) mechanism need overcome low energy barriers in the rate limiting step (RLS), which are 0.544 and 0.342 eV, respectively. The oxidation of CO along TER mechanism on MnN2C2-opp is the best reaction pathway with smallest energy barrier. Therefore, the MnN2C2-opp is an efficient catalysis and this study has a guiding role in designing effective catalyst for CO oxidation.

MnN3-DV was more suitable for CO oxidation (COOR) and from the electronic structure it was found that the Mn atom was the main active site, which was the reaction site for CO oxidation. At temperatures of 0 and 298.15 K, CO oxidation on MnN3-DV via the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism was the best reaction pathway. The rate-determining step using MnN3-DV as the catalyst for CO oxidation through the LH mechanism was O2 + CO → OOCO, and the energy barrier was 0.861 eV at 298.15 K. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been extensively studied due to their highly dispersed atomic levels, which greatly improve the distribution of active sites and maximum utilization of the catalyst. In this study, Mn-based SACs were modeled on N-doped graphene with single and double vacancy defects, and 11 types of MnN(x)models containing various three- and four-coordinate structures were considered. The ORR overpotential of MnN3(MnN4) was lowest in the three-coordinate structure (four-coordinate structure), which was selected to study catalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and reaction mechanism. The best reaction path for ORR on MnN(4)is *O-2 -> *O + H2O -> *OH -> H2O and the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) is 0.172 eV. According to the adsorption energy competition, the best catalytic performance of MnN(4)was selected to study the various reaction mechanisms of carbon monoxide oxidation (COOR). The best reaction path is the CO oxidation on MnN(4)along the termolecular Eley-Rideal (TER) with a RDS energy barrier of 0.218 eV. These results suggest that MnN(4)is a promising bifunctional catalyst.
Single–atom manganese and nitrogen co-doped graphene as low-cost catalysts for the efficient CO oxidation at room temperature

Abstract:Room temperature, low-cost and efficient single-atom catalysts for the CO oxidation was essential for the pollutant-free biological and ecological environment. Herein, the oxidation mechanism of CO on manganese (Mn) and nitrogen (N) co-doped single-vacancy graphene (MnN-SV) and double-vacancy graphene (MnN-DV) are studied through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MnN-SV have a more excellent catalytic performance for CO oxidation compared to MnN-DV due to the synergistic effect of the Mn and N atoms and the ligand effect. CO oxidation on MnN-SV results into two CO2 via the termolecular Eley–Rideal (TER) mechanism whose energy barrier of rate determining step (RDS) is 0.351 eV, indicating superior catalytic performance compared to the most known catalysts. In addition, MnN-SV catalyzes CO via the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism with only an energy barrier of RDS is 0.727 eV, and the energy barrier for the second CO2 generated by Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism is 0.691 eV. Technologically, present results provide a pathway for the development of an efficient and low-cost catalysts to oxidize CO at room temperature.

Abstract:Development of highly efficient, cost effective heteronuclear catalysts has been a huge interest in recent years due to its prime importance in environmental perpetuation. Among the developed catalysts, heteroatom-doped graphene catalysts for CO oxidation have attracted a global attention, due to its unique electronic properties suitable for CO oxidation. In this work, the oxidation mechanism of CO on various VIIIB dimeric metal-doped graphene with four atom vacancies systems () were investigated systematically by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. After a detailed analytic investigation through competition of adsorption performance and stability, , and were found to be highly efficient and suitable as CO oxidation catalysts. Further, the heteronuclear dimeric catalysts ( and ) were found to possess better catalytic activity over homonuclear dimeric catalyst () with much lower energy barrier for CO oxidation (0.79 eV, 0.49 eV, 0.42 eV for , , ). This investigation opens a new direction in designing the efficient and cost-effective graphene-based catalysts and also provides important hints for the understanding of catalytic reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation catalysis, which provides guidance and ideas for subsequent experimental synthesis of low-cost and efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide oxidation is a famous typical polyphase catalytic reaction, which can convert toxic gases into non-toxic substances, thus reducing environmental pollution. The traditional catalytic reaction has high energy barriers and low energy efficiency, while the single metal atom was inserted into the thin graphene with excellent electronic properties to form a special structure, which has extraordinary catalytic properties. Based on the first principle calculation method, the different reaction mechanism of CO oxidation in nitrogen co-doped single vacancy and double vacancy (FeN-SV and FeN-DV) was studied systematically, and its stable structure was analyzed to find the optimal catalytic reaction path. For FeN-SV, the energy barriers of a new trimolecular co-adsorption mechanism (2*CO+*O2→*OOCO+*CO→*O+*CO+CO2→*CO21→*CO22), which has not been reported yet, was only 0.525 eV. The rate-determining step (RDS) for FeN-SV (FeN-DV) is *CO+*O2→*OOCO→*O+CO2→*O+CO→CO2, which is also very beneficial to CO oxidation, was 0.604 eV (0.660 eV). The findings revealed FeN-SV and FeN-DV can be used as a low cost, high efficiency for CO catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:Carbon materials were modified with MnOx via a novel self-limiting electroless deposition using KMnO4 as the precursor. Gold nanoparticles were loaded onto MnOx/C via deposition–precipitation. The resulting Au/MnOx/C showed higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation than Au/C, and the conversion was stable on stream. The performance of Au/MnOx/C was compared with that of Au/C, MnOx/C, MnOx/Au/C, Au/MnOx, and Au/MnOx/TiO2, and relevant characterization, applying XRD, BET, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, and EDX, was conducted.

Abstract:Novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon-based substrates supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained enormous interests. Herein, the adsorption property of single transition metal (TM) catalysts anchored at H4,4,4-graphyne (TM-H4,4,4-GY) are investigated using the first-principle calculations. The graphene substrate can provide the electron transfer to H4,4,4-GY and then improve the stability of TM atoms on H4,4,4-GY sheet (TM-H4,4,4-GY/G). Different kinds of TM adatoms and gas reactants can effectively control the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn-H4,4,4-GY and Mn-H4,4,4-GY/G systems. Four catalytic mechanisms for NO and CO oxidations are comparably analyzed via Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH), Eley-Rideal (ER), new ER (NER) and termolecular ER (TER) reactions. The calculated results reveal that the NO and CO oxidation processes exhibit various reaction rates on different substrates. Compared with NO oxidation on Mn-H4,4,4-GY surface, the ER and LH mechanisms as the starting state for CO oxidation are energetically more favorable than other ones. On the Mn-H4,4,4-GY/G sheet, the CO oxidation processes by ER and NER mechanisms have relatively smaller energy barriers and exhibit higher reaction rates than those of NO oxidation. Therefore, the oxidation reactions of CO acts as a leading role in the first stage and the NO oxidation may happen in the second stage. These results provide an effective descriptor about geometric structure, electronic, magnetic, gas sensoring and catalytic properties of novel 2D carbon-based catalysts.

Abstract:The activity of double metal atoms is closely related to their chemical coordination environments. In this work, CO oxidation on Cu double atom catalyst loaded on defective graphene with triple carbon vacancy (Cu2-TG) and quadruple carbon vacancy (Cu2-QG) has been comprehensively studied through DFT calculations. Empty Cu-3 d orbital is created through charge transfer from Cu atom to carbon atom of graphene, which is parallel to the basal plane of graphene for one Cu atom and nearly perpendicular to the basal plane for the other Cu atom in Cu2-TG. While the empty Cu-3 d orbital is parallel to the basal plane for both Cu atoms in Cu2-QG. The delocalized orientation of empty Cu-3 d orbital in Cu2-TG makes it more convenient to accept electrons and more active. This is verified through the larger adsorption energies of -1.74 eV and -1.68 eV for O 2 and CO molecules on Cu2-TG, as well as the smaller values of -0.20 eV and -0.40 eV on Cu2-QG, respectively. Because of the weak interactions between Cu2-QG and gas molecules, only Cu2-TG is further considered to catalyze the CO oxidation. The maximum barrier of CO oxidation along ER path is 1.75 eV on Cu2-TG, while that is only 0.39 eV along LH path, which indicates a smooth reaction progress on Cu2-TG. The electronic structures show that the Cu atom can accept electrons through its empty 3 d orbital and lose electrons through its filled 3 d orbital with an "acceptance and feedback" mechanism. Cu2-TG can move the 5σ CO orbital downshift significantly, which causes the 5σ CO /1π CO orbitals very close to 5σ O2 /1π O2 orbitals and facilitates the formation of OC-OO bond along LH path. These results indicate that the synergistic effects between the two Cu atoms and the triple carbon vacancy make Cu2-TG to be an efficient CO oxidation catalyst.

Abstract:Manganese oxide has been recognized as one of the most promising gaseous heterogeneous catalysts due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and high catalytic oxidation performance. The modulation of the interfacial coupling effect of manganese oxides by chemical means is considered a critical and effective way to improve the catalytic performance. Herein, a novel one-step synthetic strategy of highly-efficient ultrathin manganese-based catalysts is proposed through optimal regulation of metal/manganese oxide multi-interfacial coupling. Carbon monoxide (CO) and propane (C 3 H 8 ) oxidation are employed as probe reactions to investigate the structure-catalytic mechanism - catalytic performance relationship. The ultrathin manganese (Mn)-based catalyst exhibits superior low-temperature catalytic activity with a 90% conversion of CO/C 3 H 8 realized at 106°C and 350°C. Subsequently, the effect of "interfacial effect" on intrinsic properties of manganese oxides is revealed. The ultrathin appearance of two–dimensional (2D) manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets changes the binding force in the vertical direction, thus resulting in an increase in the average manganese-oxygen (Mn-O) bond length and exposing more surface defects. Besides, the introduction of Copper (Cu) species into the catalyst further weakens the Mn-O bond and promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, which subsequently enhances the oxygen migration rate. This study provides new insights into the optimal design of transition metal oxide interfacial assemblies for efficient catalytic reactions.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of CO over Cu-based catalysts has garnered significant interest due to their promising potential in addressing environmental pollution and enhancing industrial processes. Herein, we report a dual-stimuli strategy to boost the catalytic performance of CO oxidation via synergistically harnessing active Cu + species with oxygen vacancies by engineering the grain boundary of Cu–Mn catalysts. Nanorod-like MnO 2 with a tunnel structure was prepared by a hydrothermal method and employed as the catalyst support, where different amounts of Cu were further introduced via impregnation to obtain Cu/MnO 2 catalysts. It is found that apart from the highly dispersed Cu species within the MnO 2 lattice to create lattice mismatch and distortion, some Cu are present as oxidized nanoparticles over the MnO 2 surface, thus sparking off increased dislocations and grain boundaries. A combination of characterization methods demonstrates that the proportion of active Cu + species decreases with increasing amount of Cu, presenting an inverse relationship to the abundance of oxygen vacancies over the catalyst surface. Correspondingly, both Cu + species and oxygen vacancies are identified as the main active sites for the adsorption and activation of CO and O 2 , respectively. Therefore, a trade-off between the percentage of active Cu + species and oxygen vacancies for the 15% Cu/MnO 2 catalyst with a moderate Cu introduction contributes to its highest catalytic activity, with T 50 and T 90 reaching 66 °C and 89 °C, respectively. This investigation highlights the potential of synergistically harnessing active Cu + species with oxygen vacancies via grain boundary engineering for enhanced catalytic performance in CO oxidation applications.

Abstract:CO oxidation is a widely used model system for understanding fundamental aspects of heterogeneous catalysis. While platinum (Pt) continues to be a reference material for CO oxidation catalysis, poisoning of Pt catalysts presents a critical issue that blocks reaction sites and impedes subsequent reaction steps. Fabrication of CO poison-free Pt catalysts remains a great challenge due to its CO-philic nature. Herein, we report a Pt based catalyst to effectively tackle CO poisoning by tightly anchoring Pt sub-nanoclusters onto Mn-mullite oxide (SmMn2O5) via atomic layer deposition. Superior CO oxidation activity has been observed with a significantly lowered light-off temperature and apparent activation energy. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis, oxygen isotope experiments and density functional theory calculations confirm that the low-temperature activity originates from active oxygen atom sources at the bifunctional interface structure.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO), a toxic pollutant usually formed from incomprehensive combustion especially at low temperature, has harmful effects on human health. Therefore, the catalytic oxidation of CO always receives widespread attention. Herein, we reported transition metal (Cu, Co, Ni, Fe) doped e-MnO2 as CO catalysts using a hydrothermal-deposition method. Physiochemical properties for CO oxidation were meticulously analyzed employing characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, BET, XPS, EPR, CO-TPR. The doped e-MnO2 catalyst showed expanded BET surface area, increased oxygen vacancy defects, more active sites, enhanced adsorption, and faster electron transfer. Catalytic activity tests indicated that the e-MnO2 catalyst doped with transition metals exhibited exceptionally high catalytic activity, with the Cu-doped catalyst showing the fastest chemical reaction rate and the lowest complete conversion reaction temperature (TOF of 9.92 x 10-3 s- 1, at 65degree celsius). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicated that Cu doping more effectively induced oxygen vacancy defects compared to Co, Ni, Fe, and raw e-MnO2 catalysts. It identifies the CO oxidation reaction and improved the CO adsorption capacity of the catalyst. Furthermore, a novel potential reaction pathway for the M-vK mechanism in transition metal oxides was proposed.

Abstract:A low-concentration cobalt (similar to 6 at%) and manganese (similar to 3 at%) bimetallic oxide catalyst supported on ceria nanorods (CoMnOx/CeO2), as well as its related single metal oxide counterparts (CoOx/CeO2 and MnOx/CeO2) was synthesized via a deposition-precipitation approach. The fresh samples after air-calcination at 400 C-omicron were tested under the reaction conditions of CO oxidation, and showed the following order of reactivity: CoMnOx/CeO2 > CoOx/CeO2 > MnOx/CeO2. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data identified that the structure of the CeO2 support was maintained during deposition of metal (Co, Mn) ions while the corresponding vis-Raman spectra verified that more oxygen vacancies were created after deposition-precipitation than those in pure ceria nanorods. Aberration-corrected, high-angle, annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images with the help of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analyses determined two types of cobalt species, i.e. ultra-fine clusters (< 2 nm) and smaller nanocrystals (up to 5 nm) in CoOx/CeO2 while only bigger nanostructures (similar to 10 nm) of cobalt-manganese oxides in CoMnOx/CeO2. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements demonstrated the presence of a cubic Co3O4 phase in all the cobalt-based catalysts. The fitting results of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) indicated that the introduction of the secondary metal (Mn) oxide significantly enhanced the two-dimensional growth of cobalt oxide nanostructures on the surface of CeO2. Therefore, the enhanced activity of CO oxidation reaction over the bimetallic cobalt-manganese oxide nanocatalyst can be attributed to the higher crystallinity of the Co3O4 phase in this work.

Abstract:Atomically thick two-dimensional materials have been increasingly attracting research interest not only due to their promising applications in a range of functional devices but also to their theoretical value to unraveling the catalytic electron transfer process within a simplified scenario. In this work, the monoatomic-thick dot-sized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been synthesized and intimately contacted to the basal plane of the graphene sheet to form the monolayer g-C3N4 dots@graphene (MTCG). The electrocatalytic activity of the MTCG in the oxygen reduction reaction is found to rival that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst in terms of the catalytic current density and half-wave potential. The density functional theory calculations confirm the catalytic improvement of the MTCG originates from a higher efficiency for the reduction of OOH-than that of the g-C3N4 alone; therefore, the current work is expected to provide new insights in developing next-generation, highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction.
Enhancing CO catalytic oxidation performance over Cu-doping manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves catalyst

Abstract:The CO oxidation catalytic activity of catalysts is strongly influenced by the oxygen vacancy defects (OVDs) concentration and the valence state of active metal. Herein, a defect engineering approach was implemented to enhance the oxygen vacancy defects and to modify the valence of metal ions in manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves (OMS-2) by the introduction of copper (Cu). The characterization and theoretical calculation results reveal that the incorporation of Cu 2+ ion into the OMS-2 structure led to a rise in specific surface area and pore volume, weakening of Mn-O bonds, higher proportion of the low-coordinated oxygen species adsorbed in oxygen vacancies (O ads ) and an increase in the average oxidation state of manganese. These structural modifications were discovered to considerably reduce the apparent activation energy (Ea), thus ultimately significantly enhancing the CO oxidation activity (T 99 at 148 °Cat GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ) than the original OMS-2 (T 99 = 215 °C at GHSV = 13,200 h −1 ). Furthermore, In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and In-situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ NAP-XPS) results indicate that the bimetallic synergy enhanced by doping strategy accelerates the conversion of oxygen to chemisorbed oxygen species and the reaction rate of CO oxidation through Mn 3+ +Cu 2+ ↔Mn 4+ +Cu + redox cycle. The findings of this study offer novel perspectives on the design of catalysts with exceptional performance in CO oxidation.

Abstract:MXenes have attracted considerable attention owing to their versatile and excellent physicochemical properties. Especially, they have potential applications as robust support for single atom catalysts. Here, quantum chemical studies with density functional theory are carried out to systematically investigate the geometries, stability, electronic properties of oxygen functionalized Ti2C (Ti2CO2) supported single-atom catalysts M1/Ti2CO2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag Os, Ir, Pt, Au). A new non-noble metal SAC Fe1/Ti2CO2 has been found to show excellent catalytic performance for low-temperature CO oxidation after screening the group 8-11 transition metals. We find that O2 and CO adsorption on Fe1 atom of Fe1/Ti2CO2 is favorable. Accordingly, five possible mechanisms for CO oxidation on this catalyst are evaluated, including Eley-Rideal, Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Mars–van Krevelen, Termolecular Eley-Rideal, and Termolecular Langmuir-Hinshelwood (TLH) mechanisms. Based on the calculated reaction energies for different pathways, Fe1/Ti2CO2 shows excellent kinetics for CO oxidation via TLH mechanism, with distinct low-energy barrier (0.20 eV) for the rate-determining step. These results demonstrate that Fe1/Ti2CO2 MXene is highly promising 2D materials for building robust non-noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) can maximize the utilization of metal atoms and reduce manufacturing costs, so they have been extensively studied. This study used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to discuss in detail the CO oxidation reaction (COOR) mechanism on non-noble metal iron and nitrogen atoms co-doped graphene. It was determined that FeN2-Gra is a suitable catalyst for the COOR due to its stable configuration, adsorption performance, kinetic analysis, and catalytic activity. The optimal path for FeN2-Gra on COOR is the LH mechanism, in which the lowest energy barrier that FeN2C2-hex needs to cross through the LH mechanism is 0.270 eV. The rate limiting steps (RLS) of FeN2C2-opp and FeN2C2-pen along the LH mechanism are 0.673 eV and 0.697 eV, respectively. According to the theoretical analysis, FeN2-Gra is a low-cost, high-efficiency catalyst suitable for COOR, which provides new ideas for subsequent experimental guidance and synthesis of ideal catalysts with superior catalytic performance.
