Abstract:Bulk magnetic and thermodynamic measurements, along with mean-field calculations, were conducted on the ferromagnetic K3Gd5(PO4)6 powders. No magnetic ordering was observed until 2 K, while the application of an external field B > 1 T resulted in the splitting of the Gd3+ ground state multiplet and induced a non-cooperative Schottky effect. The average nearest-neighbor exchange strength |J1/kB| is determined to be 0.017 K, which leads to a remarkably large low field magnetic entropy change {\Delta}Sm = 36.2 J kg-1 K-1 under applied field change B = 2 T at temperature T = 2 K, as well as a maximum adiabatic temperature change Tad = 10.9 K. We contend that ferromagnetic gadolinium orthophosphates serve as a promising reservoir for exploring advanced magnetic refrigerants applicable under low magnetic fields.

Abstract:The magnetism and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of rare-earth-based tungstate compounds R 3BWO9 (R = Gd, Dy, Ho) have been studied by magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and specific heat measurements. No obvious long-range magnetic ordering can be found down to 2 K. Especially for Gd3BWO9, the maximum value of magnetic entropy change (-Delta S-M(max)) and adiabatic temperature change (-Delta T-ad(max)) are 36.75 J/kg.K and 5.56 K for a low field change of 0-3 T, indicating a promising application for low temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:A gadolinium-rich borate Gd-17.33(BO3)(4)(B2O5)(2)O-16 was successfully grown by the high-temperature solution method using the Rb2O-B2O3 flux. The crystal crystallizes in centrosymmetric space group C2/m with lattice constants a = 18.4300(2) angstrom, b = 3.7400(4) angstrom, c = 14.2047(16) angstrom, and beta = 119.8550(12)degrees. Two different honeycomb-like [GdO] layers alternately arrange in the order ABAB forming the three-dimensional framework, in which the isolated [B2O5] and [BO3] units fill in channels of the 12-membered and 10-membered [GdO] polyhedral rings, respectively. The UV cutoff edge of Gd-17.33(BO3)(4)(B2O5)(2)O-16 is less than 240 nm. The maximum -Delta S-m,S-max is 26.53 J kg(-1) K-1 or 174.70 mJ cm(-3) K-1 (T = 4.4 K and Delta H = 7 T) as investigated by the isothermal magnetization method.

Abstract:The adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration which is based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of magnetic materials is an effective technology to attain sub-Kelvin temperature. In this paper, we report the magnetocaloric property of Gd-based borosilicate Gd3BSi2O10. It experiences a second-order magnetic phase transition at test temperatures range. Owing to the high Gd3+ ion / anion ligand ratio and weak magnetic interaction, Gd3BSi2O10 exhibits a large magnetic entropy change of 59.1 J.kg(-1).K-1 at 2.6 K for Delta mu H-0 = 7 T, which is comparable to that wof the top-ranked refrigerants operating in the cryogenic range. Besides, Gd3BSi2O10 compound exhibits considerable relative cooling power of 543.7 J.kg(-1) for Delta mu H-0 = 7 T. These properties demonstrate that Gd3BSi2O10 is a promising magnetic refrigeration material.

Abstract:Magnetic refrigeration technology based on Gd-based paramagnets is expected to be applied to refrigeration in extremely low temperatures, thereby reducing the consumption of liquid helium. Here, we obtained a compound, Gd3TeBO9 with high Gd3+ concentration through element substitution. The Gd3+ concentration in this compound is as high as 2.4×1024 ions/kg, which is 33% higher than the commercial Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), and further magnetic tests show that Gd3TeBO9 has a large magnetic entropy change (57.44 J/(kg K) and 408 mJ/(cm3 K) at 2.6 K and 7 T), which is 1.5 times that of GGG, implying the possibility of its further development as an potential magnetocaloric material.

Abstract:A new Gd-based borate crystal, Li3K9Gd3(BO3)7, has been successfully obtained via the high-temperature solution method using Li2O-K2O-B2O3 self-flux. It crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2/n (no. 10) with lattice parameters a = 11.3454(6) Å, b = 9.9881(4) Å, c = 11.4467(7) Å, α = γ = 90 o, β = 114.782(7) o, and Z = 2. Li3K9Gd3(BO3)7 exhibits an intriguing sandwich-like three-dimensional (3D) framework constructed from [Gd-B-O]∞ layers, KOn (n = 6 and 8) polyhedra, and LiO4 tetrahedra, in which [Gd-B-O]∞ layers are built from two types of GdO8 polyhedra and triangular BO3 units. Magnetic measurements showed that Li3K9Gd3(BO3)7 exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect with -ΔSm = 39.3 J kg-1 K-1 at 2.0 K for ΔH = 7 T, which is slightly higher than that of the commercial gadolinium gallium garnet under the same conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrum, and UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum were also performed to characterize Li3K9Gd3(BO3)7. The electronic band structures, partial density of states, and refractive indices of Li3K9Gd3(BO3)7 were investigated via the first-principle calculations.

Abstract:The large cryogenic magnetocaloric effect of a 3D oxydiacetate-bridged gadolinium-manganese MOF material, [Mn(H(2)O)(6)][MnGd(oda)(3)](2)·6H(2)O (1), was evaluated by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. A maximum -ΔS(m) of 50.1 J kg(-1) K(-1) for ΔH = 70 kG along with significant entropy change at lower field was found on account of the weak Mn···Gd ferromagnetic interactions and the small molecular mass. This suggests that 1 could be considered as a potential coolant for liquid helium temperature applications.

Abstract:We report a large entropy change (DeltaS) below 300 K, peaking near TC= 220 K, due to isothermal change of magnetic field, for Gd4Co3, with a refrigeration capacity higher than that of Gd. Notably, the isothermal magnetization is nonhysteretic - an important criterion for magnetic refrigeration without loss. DeltaS behavior is also compared with that of magnetoresistance.

Abstract:We have investigated the magnetic properties and the magnetocaloric effect of GdScO3 single crystal. A paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic magnetic phase transition has been observed in GdScO3 single crystal at low temperature, with Gd3+ sublattice in [001] direction (T-N = 2.6 K) and [010] direction (T-N = 2.8 K). This compound shows noticeable giant magnetocaloric effect with the maximum value of magnetic entropy change that come up to 47.3 J/kg K in [001] direction and 52.5 J/kg K in [010] direction for a field change of 70 kOe around its Neel temperature. The large magnetocaloric effect is due to the localized 4f moment of Gd3+ (J=S = 7/2) ions. Taking the interactions of the system into consideration, the magnetization and magnetic entropy change can both be well fitted by the molecular field theory based on mean field approximation. The giant magnetocaloric effect suggest that GdScO3 could be a potential material for magnetic refrigeration in low-temperature region. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Magnetic cooling has aroused great interest in cryogenic research due to its high energy efficiency. Due to the large magnetic moment and completely quenched orbital momentum, Gd-based oxides have been promising candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigerant. In this article, the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of NaGd9(SiO4)6O2 (NGSO) single crystal are investigated. The maximum magnetic entropy change of 60 J & sdot;kg- 1K-1 is observed with the magnetic field changing from 0-7 T at 2.6 K. The large magnetic entropy change can be attributed to high metal/ligand ratio and weak exchange interaction. Particularly, due to the large density of NGSO, the volumetric entropy change is identified to be 382.8 mJ & sdot;cm- 3K-1, which surpasses most reported magnetic refrigerants in volume units. Besides, the excellent refrigerant capacity and adiabatic temperature change have been determined to be as high as 370.4 J & sdot;kg-1 and 7.4 K under the applied field change of 0-7 T and 0-2 T, respectively. Abstract:The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in GdVO4 single crystal have been investigated systematically. In addition to the previously reported spin-flop transition at 1 T along the c-axis, other spin-flop transitions also occur along the a and b axes at 1.7 T. Meanwhile, prominent magnetic anisotropy is observed below the paramagnetic temperature, which leads to evident distinction of negative magnetic entropies along the a, b, and c axes. The maximum negative magnetic entropy -Delta S-M along the three axes are 45.91, 46.17, and 56.03 J/kg x K, respectively, at H = 7 T. The anisotropic MCE between the c and a, b axes also induces large rotational MCE (RMCE) in the bc plane, with the maximum value -Delta S-R,S- bc reaching 10.1 J/kg x K at H = 7 T. These remarkable MCE and RMCE values at low temperatures make the GdVO4 single crystal a potential candidate for applications in cryogenic magnetic refrigeration areas.
Enhanced low-field magnetocaloric effect in Dy-doped hexagonal GdBO3 compounds

Abstract:Borates have attained increasing attention attributed to their excellent thermal stability, distinctive thermodynamic property, and high mechanical strength in recent years. A series of polycrystalline Dydoped GdBO3 compounds was prepared, their crystal structures, magnetic properties, and cryogenic magnetocaloric effects were comprehensively investigated. The compounds crystallize in hexagonal structure (space group P63/mmc), the lattice constant decreases with the increase of Dy content. Dydoping in GdBO3 significantly reduces critical magnetic field and enhances low-field magnetocaloric effect. The maximum magnetic entropy changes for the Gd1-xDyxBO3 (x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1) compounds in a field change of 2 T surpass 17.3 J/(kg.K) at 2.5 K, enhanced by nearly 120% compared to GdBO3 (8.0 J/ (kg.K)). Besides, the corresponding refrigeration capacity increases from 33.9 to 62.2, 57.2, and 72.5 J/kg, respectively, with an enhancement of 70%-110%. The considerable maximum magnetic entropy change, refrigerating capacity, and temperature averaged entropy change make them competitive candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Abstract:In this work, the thermal properties, magnetic behavior and magnetocaloric effect of the Gd55Co17.5Al24.5 M 3 (M = Mn, Fe and Cu) metallic glasses with minor substitution of elements exhibiting varying magnetisms were investigated. The metallic glasses exhibited good glass-forming ability and underwent a second-order magnetic transition. As compared with the original composition, the Curie temperature was improved by microalloying the antiferromagnetic Mn, nonmagnetic Cu and ferromagnetic Fe. The magnetocaloric properties of the BMGs could be tuned by the microalloying elements with varying magnetisms. The competitive magnetic entropy change of 8.94 J kg−1K−1 and a large relative cooling power of 940 J kg−1 under a field change of 5 T were obtained for the Fe-substituted and Mn-substituted BMGs, respectively. A combination of the large refrigeration capacity and considerable magnetic entropy change makes the Gd55Co17.5Al24.5 M 3 (M = Mn, Fe and Cu) BMGs attractive refrigerant candidates for application in the active magnetic refrigerators.

Abstract:Magnetic cooling technology based on magnetocaloric effect ( MCE) has attracted great interest in obtaining extremely low temperatures, for example, for space exploration. Here, we grew a new gadolinium-rich orthoborate K3Li3Gd7(BO3)(9) (1) as a promising cryogenic magnetic coolant. It exhibits a complicated three dimensional framework constructed from BO3 groups and gadolinium-oxygen chains. The Gd-O chain consists of two types of clusters of Gd3O20 and Gd3O19 interconnection by Gd(4)O-8 polyhydron. Due to its high gadolinium concentration, a large -Delta S-m of 56.6 J kg(-1) K-1 for 1 was obtained at 2 K and Delta H= 7 T, much larger than that of the commercial benchmark Gd3Ga5O12 ( GGG) crystal ( 38.4 J kg(-1) K-1), suggesting it to be an excellent MCE material.

Abstract:The development of magnetocaloric materials with a significantly enhanced volumetric cooling capability is highly desirable for the application of adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators in confined spatial environments. Here, the thermodynamic characteristics of a magnetically frustrated spin-7/2 Gd9.33[SiO4]6O2 is presented, which exhibits strongly correlated spin disorder below ≈1.5 K. A quantitative model is proposed to describe the magnetization results by incorporating nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnetic and dipolar interactions. Remarkably, the recorded magnetocaloric responses are unprecedentedly large and applicable below 1.0 K. It is proposed that the S = 7/2 spin liquids serve as versatile platforms for investigating high-performance magnetocaloric materials in the sub-kelvin regime, particularly those exhibiting a superior cooling power per unit volume.

Abstract:The structures and magnetocaloric effects of (Gd1−xTbx)Co2 (x=0, 0.25, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1) pseudobinary compounds were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic properties measurement. The results show that the Tc of the alloy is near room temperature when X=0.6. The magnetic entropy changes of the compounds increase from 1.7 to 3.6J/kgK with increasing the content of Tb under an applied field up to 2T. All the compounds exhibit second order magnetic change. As a result, the values of their ΔSM are lower than that of some large magnetocaloric effect materials.
