Abstract:Bending losses of nanofibers or nanowires with circular 90 degrees bends are simulated using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. Dependences of bending losses on wavelength and polarization of guided light are investigated, as well as the diameters, refractive indices, and bending radii of nanowires. The acceptable bending losses (approximately 1 dB/90 degrees) predicted in glass, polymer, and semiconductor nanowires with bending radii down to micrometer level may offer valuable references for assembling highly compact photonic integrated circuits or devices with optical nanowires.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:Subwavelength diameter micro/nanofiber (MNF) provides excellent platform for many applications. In this work, we fabricate subwavelength diameter MNFs with ultra-long waist and analyze the propagation loss origin for such fibers. Transmittance as high as 99.4% is measured for MNF with a waist length of 10 cm and diameter of $1.2\mu \text{m}$ , and the loss is mainly resulted from the modal leakage of the taper. However, when the MNF is getting longer and thinner, the intrinsic surface roughness induced during the fabrication process overrides the modal leakage and plays a major role in the propagation loss. Our study reveals existence of an ultimate transmission limitation for ultra-long MNFs.

Abstract:A macrobending loss formula for single-mode fibers, which is shown to accurately predict the bend loss of a single-mode fiber with complex or real refractive index coating, is presented. Theoretical simulations and experimental measurements of bend loss in a fiber with nickel coating obtained by chemical plating and acrylate buffer coating are also presented. Agreements between simulations and measurements support the validity of the theoretical formula. Results show that the large imaginary part of the refractive index of the coating can intensify the bend loss oscillation behaviors, which implies that the bent fiber with metal coating can be utilized in fiber-optic devices. Abstract:A formula for calculating macrobending losses in single-mode fibers with metal coating is derived. The macrobending losses in a standard single-mode fiber coated with different metal coatings are simulated using this formula. Simulation results indicate that metal coating will induce strong bend loss oscillations as a function of bend radius and the stronger bend loss oscillations of the metal-coated fiber occur with the decrease of bend radius; the wavelength and coating refractive index also have significant impact on the fiber bend losses.

Abstract:In this work, anti-resonant hollow core fiber is studied in detail for its macro-bending loss properties. The mode is confined inside the central air core of hollow core fiber using inhibited coupling between core and cladding modes by anti-resonance mechanism. The simulated bending loss profile shows the resonance peaks at certain bending radii due to coupling between core and cladding modes for the chosen ratio of cladding and core diameters. In order to reduce the bending loss, the fiber design parameters such as gap between the silica cladding tubes and silica tube thickness are further optimized within the range corresponding to lowest confinement loss in visible wavelength range. For the optimized gap and thickness, the resonance peaks are shifted towards smaller bending radii by 20 cm and 18 cm when fiber is bent around X- and Y- axis respectively. The bending loss is calculated as < 0.1 dB/turn with the optimized bending radius < 50 cm for both the x- and y- polarized fundamental modes around both the bend axes. Bending loss profile is optimized by studying the simultaneous dependence of fiber design parameters (gap between silica tubes and silica tube thickness) and bending conditions (bend radius and bend axis) of degenerate fundamental mode of a hollow core fiber.

Abstract:Bending losses of sharply bent optical nanofibers or nanowires coupling with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) are investigated using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Relying on the ultra-tight optical confinement of the Au NPs, bending losses of the sharply bent optical nanofibers or nanowires can be effectively reduced by attaching Au NPs to the inner edge of the bent nanofibers or nanowires. At 650-nm wavelength, a bending-loss reduction of 4.7 dB/90° is obtained for a 300-nm-diameter SiO2 nanofiber coupling with seven 140-nm-diameter Au NPs when the bending radius is 1.0 μm. Our results suggest a potential route to realizing sharply-bent optical nanofibers or nanowires with acceptable bending losses for constructing highly compact photonic integrated circuits or devices.

Abstract:A new approach for the bending losses of coated optical single-mode fibers is developed based on a modified fiber geometry model, and the result is a simple formula. An improved condition for the peak locations is given, that allows for the wavefront curvature of the leaky mode in the bent fiber, since it is derived by wave optics. Simple explicit relations for both the peak spacings and the peak-to-trough ratio are given. Their asymptotic forms for small bend radii are independent of the fundamental-mode parameters. An interpretation of oscillations in the bend-loss curves in terms of a thin-film filter effect of the triple-layer structure on the lateral leaky-mode radiation fully explains the behavior, especially the loss increase in the peaks compared to the case of an infinite cladding. The agreement with numerical and experimental results of other authors is excellent.<>

Abstract:We performed intensive simulation work to find out key parameters which have a great influence on crosstalk in multi-core fibers. The design of core pitch, core/trench profile were optimized simultaneously to achieve optical properties suitable for the future large capacity transmission with low crosstalk less than −45dB after 100km and large effective areas larger than 130μm2.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. The high strength-to-weight ratio and ease of manufacturing of composite materials make them widely used across a variety of industries. A commonly used method of improving composite structure load-bearing capacity is to employ carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) cores. The mechanical properties of CFRP, however, vary in different directions due to its anisotropic behavior. Due to higher tensile strength along the fibers, anisotropy can lead to failure based on directions other than the fiber orientation. A thorough analysis of CFRP core failure modes has been conducted. Experimental analysis, finite element analysis, and micromechanical modeling techniques have been used in these studies. In this research, specific emphasis has been placed on understanding failure behavior under transverse loading conditions. Failure modes have been thoroughly examined in relation to geometric parameters such as interference, wedge angle, and friction coefficient. Modeling CFRP core failure and displacement behavior was carried out using FEA simulations to validate the research findings. A comparison of the obtained results with existing literature ensured that they were accurate and reliable. Additionally, response surface methodology was employed for optimization, aiming to minimize two critical factors: radial compressive stress and core displacement. By minimizing these factors, the performance and reliability of CFRP cores in applications related to grid capacity can be enhanced. The analysis of the research data revealed that the friction coefficient and interference play significant roles as interacting factors, albeit with opposite impacts on the stresses within the CFRP cores. The optimal values for interference and friction coefficient were found to be 0.0224 mm and 0.4, respectively, to minimize radial stress. Furthermore, the wedge angle exhibited a substantial influence on core displacement, with an optimal value of 3.5°.

Abstract:Understanding bend-loss in single-ring hollow-core photonic crystal fibers is becoming of increasing importance as the fibers enter practical applications. While purely numerical approaches are useful, there is a need for a simpler analytical formalism that provides physical insight and can be directly used in the design of PCFs with low bend-loss. We show theoretically and experimentally that a wavelength-dependent critical bend radius exists below which the bend-loss reaches a maximum, and that this can be calculated from the structural parameters of a fiber using a simple analytical formula. This allows straightforward design of single-ring PCFs that are bend-insensitive for specified ranges of bend radius and wavelength. It also can be used to derive an expression for the bend radius that yields optimal higher-order mode suppression for a given fiber structure.

Abstract:Hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs) have become a key enabling technology for addressing a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied needs. Indeed, recent advancements achieved by the HCPCF research community have led to significant progress, establishing these fibers as the lowest-loss optical fibers currently available for use in the visible and ultraviolet ranges. However, the fabrication process of HCPCFs demands costly infrastructure, and achieving ultralow-loss fibers remains a complex technical challenge as numerous fabrication attempts are typically required to optimize their performances. Therefore, predicting these fibers' performances before experimental fabrication is highly desirable. In this work, we tackle this task by analytically assessing the total loss in tubular-lattice HCPCFs during their fabrication process. By considering the variation in the microstructure's geometrical parameters during fabrication and the different sources of loss, we estimate expected loss levels and identify the conditions for loss minimization. We understand that our research provides valuable insights into the fabrication process of hollow-core fibers, offering a predictive approach to evaluate the fibers' performance before their experimental realization. By determining optimal conditions considering geometry, fabrication constraints, and loss figures, we believe that our work contributes to the ongoing efforts to further reduce the loss levels in HCPCFs.

Abstract:Macrobending loss of single-mode fibers is analyzed theoretically and measured experimentally in the paper.Simula-tions of macrobending loss for Corning SMF28 single-mode optical fiber are conducted based on the formulas proposed by D.Marcuse,H.Renner and L.Faustini,respectively.The measurement and simulation results are compared.The results show that the simulation results based on D.Marcuse’s equation cannot predict the macrobending loss oscillation phenomenon,while the simulation results based on H.Renner’s can predict this phenomenon with largest relative error of 57.8% between simula-tion and experimental results.Meanwhile,the simulation results based on L.Faustini’s formula can predict this phenomenon with largest relative error of only 19.6%.Therefore,the equation presented by L.Faustini can be considered as an accurate formula to calculate macrobending loss of coated single-mode fibers.

Abstract:Reduced coating diameter fibers (RCDF) are attractive for increasing fiber density in cables due to their compatibility with the standard 125 μm clad diameter. In this paper, we review recent progress on RCDF and present new modeling and experimental results. We developed microbending models to quantify both the intrinsic and extrinsic microbending sensitivities. Modeling results show that RCDF have lower intrinsic microbending sensitivity but higher extrinsic microbending sensitivity. We made RCDF with coating diameters from 125 to 175 μm. The fibers showed good attenuation on shipping reel, which confirms modeling results on intrinsic microbending. We performed microbending tests on RCDF to quantify their extrinsic microbending sensitivity. The extrinsic microbending results suggest that the microbending sensitivity of RCDF can be reduced by using softer primary coating materials and bend-insensitive fiber designs. We studied the mechanical properties of RCDF including fiber proof strength and puncture resistance. Fiber proof tests showed that fibers with coating diameter greater than 160 μm could pass the 100 kpsi proof test at similar break rates to 242 μm. Fiber puncture resistance could be improved by using better coating material designs. We also conducted a cable trial on a loose tube cable using RCDF with 160 and 170 μm coating diameters. It showed that the RCDF could increase the fiber density by more than 2 times without any microbending and fiber handling issues. Finally, we studied thin 125 μm coated fiber for making low-loss connectors with direct ferrule insertion without stripping the coating, which is promising to reduce fiber breaks and improve connector long term reliability.

Abstract:A method of designing negative curvature anti-resonant hollow-core fibers (NC-AR-HCFs) with bending resistance is proposed, by which the fundamental mode (FM) and higher-order mode (HOM) can be adjusted. An asymmetric double-ring negative curvature hollow-core fiber (ADR-NC-HCF) is proposed to verify the method. The ADR-NC-HCF achieves the FM loss of 0.8 dB/km at 1550 nm under the bending radius of 20 mm. The coupling relation between the modes in ADR-NC-HCFs is analyzed revealing the physical principle of the design method. Based on the principle, the fiber can be directionally optimized to achieve a lower loss of the FM or higher-order mode extinction ratio.

Abstract:Abstract While optical fibers display excellent performances in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet ranges remain poorly addressed by them. Obtaining better fibers for the short-wavelength range has been restricted, in all fiber optics, by scattering processes. In hollow-core fibers, the scattering loss arises from the core roughness and represents the limiting factor for loss reduction regardless of the cladding confinement power. Here, we report on the reduction of the core surface roughness of hollow-core fibers by modifying their fabrication technique. The effect of the modified process has been quantified and the results showed a root-mean-square surface roughness reduction from 0.40 to 0.15 nm. The improvement in the core surface entailed fibers with ultralow loss at short wavelengths. The results reveal this approach as a promising path for the development of hollow-core fibers with loss that can potentially be orders of magnitude lower than the ones achievable with silica-core counterparts.

Abstract:A type of anti-resonant hollow-core optical fiber consisting of Bragg elements is proposed. The confinement and bending losses are numerically simulated using the finite element method. It is found that the introduction of concentric rings to form anti-resonant structure can reduce the mode transmission loss by 2~4 orders of magnitude compared with the anti-resonant element composed of only one dielectric layer, therefore it can achieve ultra-low loss optical transmission. The influence of the structural parameters on the confinement loss was investigated. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that each dielectric layer independently contributes to the confinement of the core modes. It is also found that the Bragg reflection structure can effectively suppress the coupling between core and cladding modes, and achieve broadband low-loss optical transmission under small bending radius. In particular, it can achieve a low transmission loss of less than 0.1 dB/km over a wide wavelength range of 600 nm at the bending radius of 3 cm.

Abstract:Effects of hollow reinforcement on homogenized moduli and stress fields in unidirectional composites are investigated using an elasticity-based homogenization theory for periodic materials with hexagonal symmetries. The theory employs Fourier series representations for hollow fiber and matrix displacement fields in the cylindrical coordinate system which satisfy exactly the equilibrium equations and continuity conditions in the interior of the unit cell. The inseparable exterior problem requires satisfaction of periodicity conditions efficiently accomplished using previously introduced balanced variational principle. This principle ensures rapid solution convergence in the presence of thick or very thin-walled hollow fibers with relatively few harmonic terms. The solution’s analytical framework and stability facilitate parametric and optimization studies aimed at rapid identification of fiber wall-thickness impact on homogenized moduli and local fields in wide range of fiber volume fractions. This is illustrated for two material systems containing hollow glass fibers and alumina nanotubes as reinforcement, revealing new results of interest in the design of multifunctional porous materials. The results of parametric studies are made more precise upon incorporation of the locally-exact homogenization theory into the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, with the new computational capability employed to identify tube thickness as a function of the porosity volume fraction which minimizes the differences between target homogenized moduli and the corresponding matrix moduli. Analysis of a generalized Kirsch problem with an underlying microstructure based on targeted homogenized moduli around the cylindrical cavity demonstrates the homogenization theory’s utility in tailoring the local stress field with the aim of enhancing material toughness.
