Abstract:Understanding bend-loss in single-ring hollow-core photonic crystal fibers is becoming of increasing importance as the fibers enter practical applications. While purely numerical approaches are useful, there is a need for a simpler analytical formalism that provides physical insight and can be directly used in the design of PCFs with low bend-loss. We show theoretically and experimentally that a wavelength-dependent critical bend radius exists below which the bend-loss reaches a maximum, and that this can be calculated from the structural parameters of a fiber using a simple analytical formula. This allows straightforward design of single-ring PCFs that are bend-insensitive for specified ranges of bend radius and wavelength. It also can be used to derive an expression for the bend radius that yields optimal higher-order mode suppression for a given fiber structure.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the bend - loss problem of Single - ring Hollow - core Photonic Crystal Fibers (SR - HC - PCFs) during bending. As these fibers begin to enter practical applications, understanding their bend losses becomes increasingly important. Although numerical methods can provide specific loss values, their physical understanding of the underlying bend - loss mechanisms is limited. Therefore, the goal of the paper is to develop a simple analytical formula that can directly calculate the critical bend radius of bend losses from the structural parameters of the fiber, thereby providing physical insights and direct guidance for designing SR - HC - PCFs with low bend losses. Specifically, through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, the paper shows that there is a wavelength - dependent critical bend radius. When the bend radius is below this value, the bend loss will reach its maximum. This finding not only helps in designing single - ring fibers that are insensitive to bending within a specific bend radius and wavelength range, but can also be used to derive the optimal bend radius for achieving high - order mode suppression under a given fiber structure. This provides an important tool and method for optimizing fiber design.
