Abstract:Long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) has long time seriously relied on trusted relay or quantum repeater, which either has security threat or is far from practical implementation. Recently, a solution called twin-field (TF) QKD and its variants have been proposed to overcome this challenge. However, most security proofs are complicated, a majority of which could only ensure security against collective attacks. Until now, the full and simple security proof can only be provided with asymptotic resource assumption. Here, we provide a composable finite-key analysis for coherent-state-based TF-QKD with rigorous security proof against general attacks. Furthermore, we develop the optimal statistical fluctuation analysis method to significantly improve secret key rate in high-loss regime. The results show that coherent-state-based TF-QKD is practical and feasible, with the potential to apply over nearly one thousand kilometers.

Abstract:As an essential ingredient of quantum networks, quantum conference key agreement (QCKA) provides unconditional secret keys among multiple parties, which enables only legitimate users to decrypt the encrypted message. Recently, some QCKA protocols employing twin-field was proposed to promote transmission distance. These protocols, however, suffer from relatively low conference key rate and short transmission distance over asymmetric channels, which demands a prompt solution in practice. Here, we consider a tripartite QCKA protocol utilizing the idea of sending-or-not-sending twin-field scheme and propose a high-efficiency QCKA over asymmetric channels by removing the symmetry parameters condition. Besides, we provide a composable finite-key analysis with rigorous security proof against general attacks by exploiting the entropic uncertainty relation for multiparty system. Our protocol greatly improves the feasibility to establish conference keys over asymmetric channels.

Abstract:The Sending-or-Not-Sending protocol of the twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) has its advantage of unconditional security proof under any coherent attack and fault tolerance to large misalignment error. So far this is the only coherent-state based TF-QKD protocol that has considered finite-key effect, the statistical fluctuations. Here we consider the complete finite-key effects for the protocol and we show by numerical simulation that the protocol with typical finite number of pulses in practice can produce unconditional secure final key under general attack, including all coherent attacks. It can exceed the secure distance of 500 $km$ in typical finite number of pulses in practice even with a large misalignment error.

Abstract:Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) has been extensively researched because of its long transmission distance. The phase-encoding TF-QKD can realize both a high key rate and a long transmission distance, so it has attracted a lot of attention. In this article, we are inspired by the sending-or-not-sending TF-QKD, in which the information leakages of correct rounds and erroneous rounds are calculated separately. And, we notice that this kind of method has been used in many QKD protocols-for example, the six-state QKD. We apply a similar method to the phase-matching TF-QKD and find some improvement in it. With the new analysis, the transmission distance can be improved without any changes in experiments. We also apply the new analysis in the four-phase partial-phase-postselection protocol, and a similar improvement can be achieved.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can help two distant peers to share secret key bits, whose security is guaranteed by the law of physics. In practice, the secret key rate of a QKD protocol is always lowered with the increasing of channel distance, which severely limits the applications of QKD. Recently, twin-field (TF) QKD has been proposed and intensively studied, since it can beat the rate-distance limit and greatly increase the achievable distance of QKD. Remarkalebly, K. Maeda et. al. proposed a simple finite-key analysis for TF-QKD based on operator dominance condition. Although they showed that their method is sufficient to beat the rate-distance limit, their operator dominance condition is not general, i.e. it can be only applied in three decoy states scenarios, which implies that its key rate cannot be increased by introducing more decoy states, and also cannot reach the asymptotic bound even in case of preparing infinite decoy states and optical pulses. Here, to bridge this gap, we propose an improved finite-key analysis of TF-QKD through devising new operator dominance condition. We show that by adding the number of decoy states, the secret key rate can be furtherly improved and approach the asymptotic bound. Our theory can be directly used in TF-QKD experiment to obtain higher secret key rate. Our results can be directly used in experiments to obtain higher key rates.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two remote parties to share information-theoretic secret keys. Many QKD protocols assume the phase of encoding state can be continuous randomized from 0 to 2π, which, however, may be questionable in the experiment. This is particularly the case in the recently proposed twin-field (TF) QKD, which has received a lot of attention since it can increase the key rate significantly and even beat some theoretical rate-loss limits. As an intuitive solution, one may introduce discrete-phase randomization instead of continuous randomization. However, a security proof for a QKD protocol with discrete-phase randomization in the finite-key region is still missing. Here, we develop a technique based on conjugate measurement and quantum state distinguishment to analyze the security in this case. Our results show that TF-QKD with a reasonable number of discrete random phases, e.g., 8 phases from {0,π/4,π/2,…,7π/4}, can achieve satisfactory performance. On the other hand, we find the finite-size effects become more notable than before, which implies that more pulses should be emit in this case. More importantly, as a the first proof for TF-QKD with discrete-phase randomization in the finite-key region, our method is also applicable in other QKD protocols.

Abstract:Coherent-one-way (COW) quantum key distribution (QKD) is a significant communication protocol that has been implemented experimentally and deployed in practical products due to its simple equipment requirements. However, existing security analyses of COW-QKD either provide a short transmission distance or lack immunity against coherent attacks in the finite-key regime. In this paper, we present a tight finite-key security analysis within the universally composable framework for a variant of COW-QKD, which has been proven to extend the secure transmission distance in the asymptotic case. We combine the quantum leftover hash lemma and entropic uncertainty relation to derive the key rate formula. When estimating statistical parameters, we use the recently proposed Kato's inequality to ensure security against coherent attacks and achieve a higher key rate. Our paper confirms the security and feasibility of COW-QKD for practical application and lays the foundation for further theoretical study and experimental implementation.

Abstract:Abstract We present a theory for the composable security of sending-or-not-sending (SNS) protocol of twin field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD). We present methods to strictly calculate the finite-key effects in QKD with error rejection through two-way classical communication (TWCC) for SNS TF-QKD protocol. Unlike the normal QKD without TWCC, here the probability of tagging or untagging for each two-bit random group is not independent. We rigorously solve this problem by imagining a virtual set of bits where every bit is independent and identical. With explicit formulas, we show that simply applying Chernoff bound in the calculation gives correct key rate, but the failure probability changes a little bit. We calculate the key rate with strict bounds and security, and obtain key rates by far breaking the PLOB (Pirandola, Laurenza, Ottaviani, and Banchi) bound with composable security.

Abstract:Due to the capability of tolerating high error rate and generating more key bits per trial, high-dimensional quantum key distribution attracts wide interest. Despite great progresses in high-dimensional quantum key distribution, there are still some gaps between theory and experiment. One of these is that the security of the secret key heavily depends on the number of the emitted signals. So far, the existing security proofs are only suitable in the case with an infinite or unpractically large number of emitted signals. Here, by introducing the idea of "key classification" and developing relevant techniques based on the uncertainty relation for smooth entropies, we propose a tight finite-key analysis suitable for generalized high-dimensional quantum key distribution protocols. Abstract:Security proofs of quantum key distribution (QKD) typically assume that the devices of the legitimate users are perfectly shielded from the eavesdropper. This assumption is, however, very hard to meet in practice, and thus the security of current QKD implementations is not guaranteed. Here, we fill this gap by providing a finite-key security analysis for QKD which is valid against arbitrary information leakage from the state preparation process of the legitimate users. For this, we extend the techniques introduced by Tamaki et al (2016 New J. Phys. 18 065008) to the finite-key regime, and we evaluate the security of a leaky decoy-state BB84 protocol with biased basis choice, which is one of the most implemented QKD schemes today. Our simulation results demonstrate the practicability of QKD over long distances and within a reasonable time frame given that the legitimate users’ devices are sufficiently isolated.

Simple Method for Asymmetric Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution

Abstract:Twin-Field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) can beat the linear bound of repeaterless QKD systems. After the proposal of the original protocol, multiple papers have extended the protocol to prove its security. However, these works are limited to the case where the two channels have equal amount of loss (i.e. are symmetric). In a practical network setting, it is very likely that the channels are asymmetric due to e.g. geographical locations. In this paper we extend the "simple TF-QKD" protocol to the scenario with asymmetric channels. We show that by simply adjusting the two signal states of the two users (and not the decoy states) they can effectively compensate for channel asymmetry and consistently obtain an order of magnitude higher key rate than previous symmetric protocol. It also can provide 2-3 times higher key rate than the strategy of deliberately adding fibre to the shorter channel until channels have equal loss (and is more convenient as users only need to optimize their laser intensities and do not need to physically modify the channels). We also perform simulation for a practical case with three decoy states and finite data size, and show that our method works well and has a clear advantage over prior art methods with realistic parameters.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution promises unconditionally secure communications. However, as practical devices tend to deviate from their specifications, the security of some practical systems is no longer valid. In particular, an adversary can exploit imperfect detectors to learn a large part of the secret key, even though the security proof claims otherwise. Recently, a practical approach—measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution—has been proposed to solve this problem. However, so far its security has only been fully proven under the assumption that the legitimate users of the system have unlimited resources. Here we fill this gap and provide a rigorous security proof against general attacks in the finite-key regime. This is obtained by applying large deviation theory, specifically the Chernoff bound, to perform parameter estimation. For the first time we demonstrate the feasibility of long-distance implementations of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution within a reasonable time-frame of signal transmission.
