Abstract:To raise the repetition rate, a single-photon source based on Kerr quantum blockade in a cascaded quantum system is studied. Using the quantum trajectory method, we calculate and simulate the photon number distributions out of a two-cavity system. A high quality single-photon source can be achieved through optimizing parameters. The designed photon source is further applied to the decoy state quantum key distribution (QKD). With and without statistical fluctuation, the key rate can be both raised drastically.

Abstract:Quantum blockades as a nonlinear quantum optical process have been well studied in recent years. Using the quantum trajectory method, we calculate and discuss the output photon number distributions of a single-photon blockade process in a Kerr nonlinear dissipative resonator, revealing that the probability of the single-photon state can be optimized. Then we show through numerical simulations that such a quasi-single-photon source can drastically raise the key rate in the decoy-state quantum key distribution.

Abstract:Coherent state photon sources are widely used in quantum information processing. In many applications, such as quantum key distribution (QKD), a coherent state functions as a mixture of Fock states by assuming that its phase is continuously randomized. In practice, such a crucial assumption is often not satisfied, and therefore the security of existing QKD experiments is not guaranteed. To bridge this gap, we provide a rigorous security proof of QKD with discrete-phase-randomized coherent state sources. Our results show that the performance of the discrete-phase randomization case is close to its continuous counterpart with only a small number (say, 10) of discrete phases. Compared to the conventional continuous phase randomization case, where an infinite amount of random bits are required, our result shows that only a small amount (say, 4 bits) of randomness is needed.

Abstract:In this paper, we present schemes on implementing the single-photon-added coherent source in quantum key distributions. We apply this source in either the standard BB84 protocol or the recently proposed measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution, comparing their performance with the cases of using other existing sources, e.g., the weak coherent source or the heralded single-photon source, and giving out corresponding numerical simulations. Our simulation results show that in both protocols the single-photon-added coherent source can greatly exceed all other existing sources. Moreover, even when taking statistical fluctuation into account, a high key generation rate can still be achieved at long distance by applying this source.

Abstract:Efficiency in measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution(MDI-QKD) can be improved not only by the protocol, but also single-photon sources. We study the behavior of MDI-QKD with statistical fluctuation using quantum blockade source. Numerical simulation for a type of 4-intensity protocol shows that, after parameter optimization, this source can improve the final key rate by 100 times compared with traditional weak coherent state sources.

Abstract:The output incoherent spectrum and the photon blockade for the two-photon near-resonant excitation are numerically investigated by using the modified theories which are valid for an arbitrary degree of the qubit-cavity interaction. Owing to the effects of strong coupling of the system, the relaxation coefficients of the system are very sensitive to the coupling strength between the qubit and the cavity mode, which results in the redistribution of the populations and the appearance of the population inversion between the ground state and the first excited state, and it is demonstrated by the intensity of the output incoherent spectrum. The redistribution of the populations leads to one cascaded decay channel being weakened and the other possibly being enhanced significantly. Moreover, by adjusting the detuning between the qubit and the cavity mode, the phenomenon of the intercrossing in the energy levels appears. Through choosing the proper two-photon near-resonant excitation of the external classical driving field, the strong-coupling qubit-cavity system effectively causes one cascaded decay channel to realize the two-photon blockade. It is shown that the two-photon blockade can be further enhanced by one cascaded decay channel.

Abstract:Quantum technologies, holding the promise of exponentially superior performance in comparison to their classical counterparts for certain tasks, have consistently encountered challenges, including instability in quantum light sources, quantum decoherence, and vulnerability to losses that topological photonics happens to adeptly address. Here, we theoretically put forth a quantum Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type chain designed to greatly enhance single-photon blockade (single PB) effect with topological protection. By designing the deliberate coupling strengths, the quantum level lattices take the form of a one-dimensional array with a topological edge state in single-excitation space and a two-dimensional square breathing lattice with topological corner states in two-excitation space, resulting in enhanced single-photon excitation and the suppression of two-photon transitions. Therefore, the second-order correlation function is diminished by up to 2 orders of magnitude at the cavity resonance frequency, accompanied by stronger brightness. Furthermore, the PB effect is robust to local perturbations in cavity-qubit coupling and qubit frequency, benefitting from topological protection. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.034058 © 2024 American Physical Society
