Abstract:Hydrocarbon separation is one of the most critically important and complex industrial separation processes, offering versatile bulk chemicals and vital support to the national economy. Traditional separation technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and solvent extraction, are energy-intensive and cause serious environmental stress. Moreover, the growth of industries and technologies and the greater requirements for products (e.g., purity) lead to challenges that cannot be met using traditional separation methods. Adsorptive and membrane-based separations are recognized as energy-efficient alternatives by which to revolutionize the current energy-intensive conditions and satisfy the new demands. This critical review presents the recent progress in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and related membranes (e.g., continuous MOF membranes and mixed-matrix membranes) for hydrocarbon separation. The contributions of the underlying separation mechanisms (e.g., enthalpy-driven thermodynamic equilibrium, molecular sieving, kinetic separation based on molecular size, and combined mechanisms) and the adopted strategies (e.g., defect and microstructure control, membrane thickness and interfacial compatibility) to the breaking of trade-off (e.g., permeability/selectivity and capacity/selectivity) and the design of novel materials and processing technologies are discussed. Moreover, this review also summarizes the potential barriers that exist from the academic to the ultimate industrial implementations and the prospects of future development.

Abstract:Separation is an essential aspect in analytical chemistry or chemical measurement science. With the capability to separate components within a sample into individual bands or zones distributed spatially or/and temporally, separation makes the analysis or measurement more accurate through separating different components into individual fractions and reducing or even eliminating the interference from sample matrix species. Such a power also makes separation an important tool to purify components of interest from mixtures or natural products for further investigations. Meanwhile, separation can make a subsequent analytical method more sensitive through enriching or concentrating the components of interest in the samples to be tested. Modern separation science and techniques have been well established and are quite mature, making them widely employed in routine scientific research and practices. However, due to the increasing complexity and challenge of analytical tasks that we are facing, advanced separation science and techniques are still in high demand. This inspired us to organize this themed collection to reflect some trends and features of this practically useful, technically diverse and forever progressive area.

Progress in Energy and Combustion Science

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage is recognized as one of the most promising solutions to mitigate climate change. Compared to conventional separation technologies, supersonic separation is considered a new generation of technology for gas separation and carbon capture thanks to its advantages of cleaning and efficient processes which are achieved using energy conversion in supersonic flows. The supersonic separation works on two principles which both occur in supersonic flows: the energy conversion to generate microdroplets and supersonic swirling flows to remove the generated droplets. This review seeks to offer a detailed examination of the cutting-edge technology for gas separation and carbon dioxide removal in the new-generation supersonic separation technology, which plays a role in carbon capture and storage. The evaluation discusses the design, performance, financial feasibility, and practical uses of supersonic separators, emphasizing the most recent progress in the industry. Theoretical analysis, experiments, and numerical simulations are reviewed to examine in detail the advances in the nucleation and condensation characteristics and the mechanisms of supersonic separation, as well as new applications of this technology including the liquefaction of natural gas. We also provide the perspective of the challenges and opportunities for further development of supersonic separation. This survey contributes to an improved understanding of sustainable gas removal and carbon capture by using the new-generation supersonic separation technology to mitigate climate change.

Abstract:Human beings are facing severe global environmental problems and sustainable development problems. Effective separation technology plays an essential role in solving these challenges. In the past decades, superwettability (e.g., superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity) has succeeded in achieving oil/water separation. The mixture of oil and water is just the tip of the iceberg of the mixtures that need to be separated, so the wettability-based separation strategy should be extended to treat other kinds of liquid/liquid or liquid/gas mixtures. This review aims at generalizing the approach of the well-developed oil/water separation to separate various multiphase mixtures based on the surface superwettability. Superhydrophobic and even superoleophobic surface microstructures have liquid-repellent properties, making different liquids keep away from them. Inspired by the process of oil/water separation, liquid polymers can be separated from water by using underwater superpolymphobic materials. Meanwhile, the underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic porous materials are successfully used to collect or remove gas bubbles in a liquid, thus achieving liquid/gas separation. We believe that the diversified wettability-based separation methods can be potentially applied in industrial manufacture, energy use, environmental protection, agricultural production, and so on.

One possible solution is to decrease the equipment size/productivity ratio, energy consumption, and waste generation via process integration and optimization. Abstract:Rare earth elements are essential for numerous clean energy applications, yet their mining, separation, and processing pose significant environmental challenges. Traditional separation processes often result in ecological damage, highlighting the critical need for innovative techniques that reduce environmental impacts. This article reviews recent advancements in rare earth separation technologies, with a particular focus on the role of neutral organic compounds. It explores how these compounds change selectivity across the rare earth series, offering promising strategies for designing more effective rare earth element separation systems. Furthermore, the article points out research areas requiring additional investigation to improve the sustainability of these critical processes.

Abstract:Various industrial fields use gas-liquid separation, but due to the variety of gas-liquid separation technologies, no comprehensive review has been conducted. This paper systematically reviews the separation mechanism, application ranges, research status, and development prospects of various separation techniques. The challenges associated with each gas-liquid separation technology are presented. This review indicates that future research should focus on the droplet-droplet and droplet-gas interaction mechanisms and the formation and breakup mechanisms of liquid films. Future experimental efforts should focus on investigating gas-liquid two-phase flow fields including droplet size distribution, phase distribution, and velocity distribution. A promising development direction is to combine several gas-liquid separation technologies to expand their range of applications. An increased knowledge of the relationship between the flow field and separation performance would guide the standardized design of the gas-liquid separators. Abstract:A global energy transition from fossil-based to renewable-based systems requires advancements in various energy sectors. Current chemical separation processes are quite energy-intensive and require significant advancement to make this transition happen. In the energy transition era, reducing the dependency of separation processes on fossil-based thermal energy seems inevitable for transitioning smoothly and meeting the stringent timelines. In particular, adsorption-based separation processes have the potential to be fully electrified through innovative strategies in developing stimuli-responsive adsorbents and swing processes. In this review, we discuss the recent efforts in electrification of adsorption processes and provide an overview of emerging materials and processes. The challenges associated with electrified adsorption-based separations are discussed in detail, and opportunities to expedite the transition from traditional practices to advanced energy-efficient systems are provided in the end.

Green Separation Technology in Food Processing: Supercritical-CO2 Fluid Extraction

Abstract:One of the most important trends in the food industry today is the demand for “natural” foods and ingredients that are free from toxic-chemical additives. Supercritical-CO2 fluid extraction is considered as one of the “green” and environmentally friendly separation technologies that have emerged as attractive alternatives to traditional methods for the concentration of bioactive compounds. The greatest advantage of supercritical-CO2 fluid extraction is that it is rapid and highly selective with shorter extraction times than traditional methods. It is particularly favorable for the extraction of thermally labile bioactive substances that easily degrade when subjected to traditional extraction techniques. Supercritical-CO2 fluid extraction technology is available in the form of a single stage batch process, and could be scaled up to a multistage semi-continuous batch coupled with a multi-separation process. With improved processing conditions and reduced cost, supercritical-CO2 fluid extraction will become even more economical at low throughput. Extracts from natural sources are key elements in the manufacturing of health-promoting functional foods and ingredients. Thus, the development and use of “green” separation processes and technologies is likely to continue to be widely employed in the processing of bioactive components, especially for use as supplements for health-promoting foods.

Abstract:Green separation science involves extraction, pre-concentration and chromatographic analysis aiming at minimizing environmental impact by reducing energy and reagent usage and reducing or eliminating waste generation. However, the enrichment of trace analytes and/or the analysis of complex matrices most frequently require several steps before analysis, such as extraction, pre-concentration, clean up and preparative chromatography. Thus, alternative and greener separation techniques and solvents are replacing classical methods to diminish the carbon footprint and increase sustainability. Moreover, many innovations are also emerging to curtail the environmental impact of samples analysis; such as micro or nano analytical platforms, sensor-based systems and direct injection to high-resolution mass spectrometry. The current review provides an updated account of the green and sustainable separation science techniques. The current innovations on greener separations and their application in different fields of study are discussed.

Abstract:Currently, magnetic technology and green solvents are widely used in chemical engineering, environmental engineering and other fields as they are environmentally friendly, easy to operate and highly efficient. Moreover, a magnetic field has positive effect on many physicochemical processes. However, related new methods, materials, strategies and applications in separation science still need to be developed. In this review, a series of meaningful explorations of magnetic technologies for the separation of natural products and biologic objects, including magnetic ionic liquids and other magnetic solvents and fluids, magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic fields, and the development of magnetic separators were reviewed. Furthermore, the difficulties in the application and development of magnetic separation technology were discussed on the basis of comparison and data analysis, especially for the selection of magnetic materials and magnetic field sources. Finally, the progress in the development of magnetic separators was also elaborated for researchers, mainly including that of the new high-efficiency magnetic separator through multi-technology integration and the optimization of traditional magnetic separators, which help current techniques break through their bottleneck as a powerful driving force.

Abstract:Membrane separation stands as an environmentally friendly, high permeance and selectivity, low energy demand process that deserves scientific investigation and industrialization. To address intensive demand, seeking appropriate membrane materials to surpass trade-off between permeability and selectivity and improve stability is on the schedule. 2D materials offer transformational opportunities and a revolutionary platform for researching membrane separation process. Especially, the atomically thin graphene with controllable porosity and structure, as well as unique properties, is widely considered as a candidate for membrane materials aiming to provide extreme stability, exponentially large selectivity combined with high permeability. Currently, it has shown promising opportunities to develop separation membranes to tackle bottlenecks of traditional membranes, and it has been of great interest for tremendously versatile applications such as separation, energy harvesting, and sensing. In this review, starting from transport mechanisms of separation, the material selection bank is narrowed down to nanoporous graphene. The study presents an enlightening overview of very recent developments in the preparation of atomically thin nanoporous graphene and correlates surface properties of such 2D nanoporous materials to their performance in critical separation applications. Finally, challenges related to modulation and manufacturing as well as potential avenues for performance improvements are also pointed out. This review emphasizes the representative investigation progress on preparation methods of separation-based atomically thin nanoporous graphene (graphene growth and transfer, defect sealing, top-down/bottom-up nanopore introduction, and functionalization). Abstract:After a review on the conventional separation process of rare earths (RE), hyperlink extraction technology was introduced and a potential process was proposed for clean separation of RE. A great amount of acid, base and water was consumed in the conventional RE separation process which included the procedures of raw material dissolving, extraction separation and precipitation. Therefore hyperlink extraction technology had been developed, by which the repeated consumption of acid and base could be avoided during the extraction process. And based on the theory and successful applications of the hyperlink extraction technology, we proposed the integral hyperlink process in which the intermediate acid resulted in individual procedures would be recycled and reused after being treated. The proposed process would make it feasible to consume no chemicals except for oxalic acid, and so could be a promising clean separation technology with a significant reduction on consumption and emission.
