Abstract:Abstract Barocaloric materials are particularly promising for green and efficient solid-state cooling technology because of their great potential in terms of cooling performance. However, intermetallic materials with outstanding barocaloric effects under low hydrostatic pressure are especially lacking, which has severely delayed the development of barocaloric refrigeration. Here, in a rare-earth intermetallic La-Ce-Fe-Si-H, we achieve a giant specific barocaloric temperature change of 8 K per kbar according to direct measurements of the adiabatic temperature change Δ T BCE under hydrostatic pressure, which is confirmed by a phenomenological transition simulation. This barocaloric strength is significantly better than those in previously reported phase-transitioned alloys. By using a cutting-edge in situ neutron diffraction technique operating under simultaneously varying temperature, magnetic field, and hydrostatic pressure, we reveal that the large isotropic transition volume change in La-Ce-Fe-Si-H plays a crucial role in the giant barocaloric effect. Additionally, we employ Landau expansion theory to demonstrate that the high sensitivity of the transition temperature to the applied pressure produces the sizable Δ T BCE in the itinerant electron metamagnetic transition alloys. Our results provide insight into the development of high-performance barocaloric materials and related cooling systems.

Abstract:The presence of colossal and reversible barocaloric effects in LiCB11H12, a renowned solid electrolyte, is evidenced near its order–disorder phase transition. It is observed that lattice vibrations primarily contribute to these barocaloric effects. Additionally, although the diffusion of lithium ions only marginally contributes to the accompanying entropy change, it plays a crucial role in facilitating the molecular order–disorder phase transition. Solid‐state methods for cooling and heating promise a sustainable alternative to current compression cycles of greenhouse gases and inefficient fuel‐burning heaters. Barocaloric effects (BCE) driven by hydrostatic pressure (p) are especially encouraging in terms of large adiabatic temperature changes (|ΔT| ≈ 10 K) and isothermal entropy changes (|ΔS| ≈ 100 J K−1 kg−1). However, BCE typically require large pressure shifts due to irreversibility issues, and sizeable |ΔT| and |ΔS| seldom are realized in a same material. Here, the existence of colossal and reversible BCE in LiCB11H12 is demonstrated near its order‐disorder phase transition at ≈380 K. Specifically, for Δp ≈ 0.23 (0.10) GPa, |ΔSrev| = 280 (200) J K−1 kg−1 and |ΔTrev| = 32 (10) K are measured, which individually rival with state‐of‐the‐art BCE figures. Furthermore, pressure shifts of the order of 0.1 GPa yield huge reversible barocaloric strengths of ≈2 J K−1 kg−1 MPa−1. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to quantify the role of lattice vibrations, molecular reorientations, and ion diffusion on the disclosed BCE. Interestingly, lattice vibrations are found to contribute the most to |ΔS| while the diffusion of lithium ions, despite adding up only slightly to the entropy change, is crucial in enabling the molecular order–disorder phase transition.

Abstract:A giant barocaloric effect (BCE) in a molecular material Fe3(bntrz)6(tcnset)6 (FBT) is reported, where bntrz = 4‐(benzyl)‐1,2,4‐triazole and tcnset = 1,1,3,3‐tetracyano‐2‐thioethylepropenide. The crystal structure of FBT contains a trinuclear transition metal complex that undergoes an abrupt spin‐state switching between the state in which all three FeII centers are in the high‐spin (S = 2) electronic configuration and the state in which all of them are in the low‐spin (S = 0) configuration. Despite the strongly cooperative nature of the spin transition, it proceeds with a negligible hysteresis and a large volumetric change, suggesting that FBT should be a good candidate for producing a large BCE. Powder X‐ray diffraction and calorimetry reveal that the material is highly susceptible to applied pressure, as the transition temperature spans the range from 318 at ambient pressure to 383 K at 2.6 kbar. Despite the large shift in the spin‐transition temperature, its nonhysteretic character is maintained under applied pressure. Such behavior leads to a remarkably large and reversible BCE, characterized by an isothermal entropy change of 120 J kg−1 K−1 and an adiabatic temperature change of 35 K, which are among the highest reversible values reported for any caloric material thus far.

Abstract:Antiferroelectric thin films have demonstrated an excellent negative electrocaloric effect, and are potential candidates for future refrigeration applications. In this study, the electrocaloric effect of polycrystalline PbZrO3 antiferroelectric thin films, deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by a sol-gel method, were studied by an indirect method based on the Maxwell relations. It was found that the PbZrO3 thin film undergoes a phase transition from the antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase driven by the coupling of electric field and temperature. The antiferroelectric to ferroelectric transition leads to a giant negative electrocaloric effect in the PbZrO3 thin film. It is also found that the phase transition temperature decreases with the increase in the applied electric field. As a result, the giant negative electrocaloric effect of the PbZrO3 thin film could be tuned to room temperature, liquid nitrogen temperature and even down to liquid helium temperature range by applying different magnitudes of external fields. For instance, the maximum electrocaloric temperature change is -6.8 K at 292 K under 500 kV cm(-1), -6.7 K at 229 K under 600 kV cm(-1) and -3.8 K at 138 K under 700 kV cm(-1). Our results expand the working temperature of the electrocaloric materials into the ultra-low temperature range, and open up a new landscape for achieving low temperature cooling using ECE devices.

Abstract:Emerging caloric cooling technology provides a green alternative to conventional vapor-compression technology which brings about serious environmental problems. However, the reported caloric materials are much inferior to their traditional counterparts in cooling capability. Here we report the barocaloric (BC) effect associated with the liquid-solid-transition (L-S-T) in n -alkanes. A low-pressure of ~50 MPa reversibly triggers an entropy change of ~700 J kg −1 K −1 , comparable to those of the commercial refrigerants in vapor-based compression systems. The Raman study and theoretical calculations reveal that applying pressure to the liquid state suppresses the twisting and random thermal motions of molecular chains, resulting in a lower configurational entropy. When the pressure is strong enough to drive the L-S-T, the configurational entropy will be fully suppressed and induce the colossal BC effect. This work could open a new avenue for exploring the colossal BC effect by evoking L-S-T materials.

Abstract:Hexagonal MnMX-based (M = Co or Ni, X = Si or Ge) alloys exhibit giant reversible barocaloric effects. However, giant volume expansion would result in the as-cast MnMX ingots fragmenting into powders, and inevitably bring the deterioration of mechanical properties and formability. Grain fragmentation can bring degradation of structural transformation entropy change during cyclic application and removal of pressure. In this paper, giant reversible barocaloric effects with high thermal cycle stability can be achieved in the epoxy bonded (MnCoGe) 0.96 (CuCoSn) 0.04 composite. Giant reversible isothermal entropy change of 43.0 J∙kg −1 ∙K −1 and adiabatic temperature change from barocaloric effects (Δ T BCE ) of 15.6 K can be obtained within a wide temperature span of 30 K at 360 MPa, which is mainly attributed to the integration of the change in the transition temperature driven by pressure of −101 K∙GPa −1 and suitable thermal hysteresis of 11.1 K. Further, the variation of reversible Δ T BCE against the applied hydrostatic pressure reaches up to 43 K∙GPa −1 , which is at the highest level among the other reported giant barocaloric compounds. More importantly, after 60 thermal cycles, the composite does not break and the calorimetric curves coincide well, demonstrating good thermal cycle stability.

Abstract:Abstract One of the greatest obstacles to the real application of solid-state refrigeration is the huge driving fields. Here, we report a giant barocaloric effect in inorganic NH 4 I with reversible entropy changes of $$\Delta {S}_{{P}_{0}\to P}^{{{\max }}}$$ Δ S P 0 → P max ∼71 J K −1 kg −1 around room temperature, associated with a structural phase transition. The phase transition temperature, T t , varies dramatically with pressure at a rate of d T t /d P ∼0.79 K MPa −1 , which leads to a very small saturation driving pressure of Δ P ∼40 MPa, an extremely large barocaloric strength of $$\left|\Delta {S}_{{P}_{0}\to P}^{{{\max }}}/\Delta P\right|$$ Δ S P 0 → P max / Δ P ∼1.78 J K −1 kg −1 MPa −1 , as well as a broad temperature span of ∼41 K under 80 MPa. Comprehensive characterizations of the crystal structures and atomic dynamics by neutron scattering reveal that a strong reorientation-vibration coupling is responsible for the large pressure sensitivity of T t . This work is expected to advance the practical application of barocaloric refrigeration.

Abstract:Abstract The emergent cooling technologies based on the caloric effect provide a green alternative to the conventional vapor-compression one which brings about the serious environment problem. However, the existing caloric materials are much inferior to their traditional counterparts in cooling performance. Here we report the colossal barocaloric effect in liquid-solid-transition materials, i.e. n-alkanes. Their excellent cooling performance is superior to those for existing caloric materials and comparable to those of traditional refrigerants. Theoretical calculations suggest the liquid state n-alkanes has huge configuration entropy characterized by large dispersion of bond lengths. Appling pressure significantly reduces the configuration entropy and eventually induces the liquid-solid-transition, leading to the colossal barocaloric effect. This work provides promising refrigerants for caloric cooling technology, and opens a new avenue for exploring colossal barocaloric materials.

Abstract:Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to external fields and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ($|\Delta T| \sim 1$ K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict the existence of colossal barocaloric effects (isothermal entropy changes of $|\Delta S| \sim 100$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$) in the energy material Li$_{2}$B$_{12}$H$_{12}$ by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we estimate $|\Delta S| = 387$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$ and $|\Delta T| = 26$ K for an applied pressure of $P = 0.4$ GPa at $T = 475$ K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by an order-disorder phase transformation that exhibits a fair degree of reversibility and involves coexisting Li$^{+}$ diffusion and (BH)$_{12}^{-2}$ reorientational motion at high temperatures.

Abstract:Barocaloric materials hold great promise for next-generation solid-state cooling devices because of their green and efficient cooling performance. The insights into low-pressure-driven barocaloric materials are expected to pave the way for the widespread application of barocaloric refrigeration technology. Here, we reveal the low-pressure-driven large barocaloric effect (BCE) modulated by geometrical frustrations in Mn3Pt. The highest sensitivity to pressure of Mn3Pt in metal BCE materials results in an excellent temperature-change strength of 9.77 K 100-1 MPa-1. Neutron powder diffraction and first-principles calculations point out the dual effect of geometrical frustration on modulating the unusual BCE, which not only induces giant volume expansion by inspiring strong spin fluctuation and magnetic moment but also enhances the sensitivity of magnetic phase transition. The model of the dual effect of geometrical frustration in magnets with geometrical frustration is established, which will promote the research progress of barocaloric refrigeration devices.

Abstract:Barocaloric effects in a layered hybrid organic–inorganic compound, (C10H21NH3)2MnCl4, that are reversible and colossal under pressure changes below 0.1 GPa are reported. This barocaloric performance originates in a phase transition characterized by different features: A strong disordering of the organic chains, a very large volume change, a very large sensitivity of the transition temperature to pressure and a small hysteresis. The obtained values are unprecedented among solid‐state cooling materials at such low pressure changes and demonstrate that colossal effects can be obtained in compounds other than plastic crystals. The temperature‐pressure phase diagram displays a triple point indicating enantiotropy at high pressure.

Abstract:Barocaloric effect in BaTiO3 single crystal is studied by a thermodynamic phenomenological model. It is demonstrated that a giant barocaloric effect can be achieved near room temperature with an adiabatic temperature change of more than 3 K and a temperature span about 50 K. As expected, the electrocaloric peak can be shifted towards room temperature by pressure. However, a slight reduction of the electrocaloric peak is found in contrast to relaxor ferroelectrics and LiNbO3. We believe that our findings could open a potential route by combining the barocaloric effect and pressure-mediated electrocaloric effect in BaTiO3 single crystal for cooling devices.

Abstract:Abstract Solid-state refrigeration based on the caloric effect is viewed as a promising efficient and clean refrigeration technology. Barocaloric materials were developed rapidly but have since encountered a general obstacle: the prominent caloric effect cannot be utilized reversibly under moderate pressure. Here, we report a mechanism of an emergent large, reversible barocaloric effect (BCE) under low pressure in the hybrid organic–inorganic layered perovskite (CH 3 –(CH 2 ) n −1 –NH 3 ) 2 MnCl 4 ( n = 9,10), which show the reversible barocaloric entropy change as high as Δ S r ∼ 218, 230 J kg −1 K −1 at 0.08 GPa around the transition temperature ( T s ∼ 294, 311.5 K). To reveal the mechanism, single-crystal (CH 3 –(CH 2 ) n −1 –NH 3 ) 2 MnCl 4 ( n = 10) was successfully synthesized, and high-resolution single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) was carried out. Then, the underlying mechanism was determined by combining infrared (IR) spectroscopy and density function theory (DFT) calculations. The colossal reversible BCE and the very small hysteresis of 2.6 K (0.1 K/min) and 4.0 K (1 K/min) are closely related to the specific hybrid organic–inorganic structure and single-crystal nature. The drastic transformation of organic chains confined to the metallic frame from ordered rigidity to disordered flexibility is responsible for the large phase-transition entropy comparable to the melting entropy of organic chains. This study provides new insights into the design of novel barocaloric materials by utilizing the advantages of specific organic–inorganic hybrid characteristics.

Abstract:The discovery of colossal barocaloric effects in organic plastic crystals has significantly advanced the development of solid‐state refrigerant techniques. Adapting to the real application, a tradeoff of various barocaloric performances has to be achieved. Here, it is reported a novel plastic crystal system, that is, carboranes (C2B10H12), including three positional isomers: ortho‐carborane, meta‐carborane, and para‐carborane, which are characterized by C2v, C2v, D5d point groups, respectively. They all undergo an orthorhombic‐to‐tetragonal phase transition around room temperature. Compared to the previously reported organic plastic crystals, this system exhibits a combination of large pressure‐normalized entropy changes, the high‐pressure sensitivity of the transition temperature, small thermal hysteresis, and so forth. Their barocaloric performances are positional‐isomerism dependent, and the best performances are obtained in para‐carborane with maximum entropy changes of about 106.2 J kg−1 K−1 achieved under pressure changes below 30 MPa. This study not only suggests that carboranes would be a considerably promising working material for barocaloric refrigeration at room temperature but also indicates that delicate tuning of molecular isomerism is an effective strategy to enhance barocaloric performances. Plastic crystals of carboranes exhibit excellent barocaloric performances around room temperature. A series of inversely correlated performances are simultaneously optimized so that carboranes are ranked the best among current leading materials. Most impressive is the saturation pressure, which is as low as 30 MPa, leading to superior pressure‐normalized entropy changes.

Supergiant Barocaloric Effects in Acetoxy Silicone Rubber over a Wide Temperature Range: Great Potential for Solid-state Cooling

Abstract:Solid-state cooling based on caloric effects is considered a viable alternative to replace the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration systems. Regarding barocaloric materials, recent results show that elastomers are promising candidates for cooling applications around room-temperature. In the present paper, we report supergiant barocaloric effects observed in acetoxy silicone rubber—a very popular, low-cost and environmentally friendly elastomer. Huge values of adiabatic temperature change and reversible isothermal entropy change were obtained upon moderate applied pressures and relatively low strains. These huge barocaloric changes are associated both to the polymer chain rearrangements induced by confined compression and to the first-order structural transition. The results are comparable to the best barocaloric materials reported so far, opening encouraging prospects for the application of elastomers in near future solid-state cooling devices.

Abstract:In the present work, a low-pressure-induced large reversible barocaloric effect was achieved in (MnNiGe)0.91-(FeCoGe)0.09 alloys. The isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change are as high as 32.8 J·kg−1K−1 and 5.2 K by applying hydrostatic pressure of 1 kbar, respectively. The reversible isothermal entropy change of 19.3 J·kg−1K−1 and reversible adiabatic temperature change of 3.6 K within a temperature span of 16 K at 1 kbar have been achieved. Good reversible barocaloric performance is attributed to the combination of the thermal hysteresis of 6.4 K and the transition temperature shift with the pressure of 6.9 K·kbar−1.

Abstract:The barocaloric effect (BCE) is a promising alternative to traditional vapor compressing refrigeration because of its environmentally friendly impact and high energy efficiency. However, the driving hydrostatic pressure for most BCE materials is relatively high, which is not conducive to practical application. In this paper, we report that the large barocaloric entropy change of MnAs(0.94)S(b0.0)6 alloy can be induced by low hydrostatic pressures. Its phase transition temperature is strongly sensitive to the applied pressure, resulting in a large barocaloric coefficient of 134 K.GPa(-1) on cooling and 126 K.GPa(-1) on heating. The maximum barocaloric entropy change and adiabatic temperature change resulted from hydrostatic pressure of 40 MPa reach up to 26.3 J.kg(-1).K-1 and 14.4 K, respectively, showing an excellent barocaloric performance. The results demonstrate that the MnAs0.94Sb0.06 alloy is a promising alternative for BCE refrigeration.
