Abstract:A giant barocaloric effect (BCE) in a molecular material Fe3(bntrz)6(tcnset)6 (FBT) is reported, where bntrz = 4‐(benzyl)‐1,2,4‐triazole and tcnset = 1,1,3,3‐tetracyano‐2‐thioethylepropenide. The crystal structure of FBT contains a trinuclear transition metal complex that undergoes an abrupt spin‐state switching between the state in which all three FeII centers are in the high‐spin (S = 2) electronic configuration and the state in which all of them are in the low‐spin (S = 0) configuration. Despite the strongly cooperative nature of the spin transition, it proceeds with a negligible hysteresis and a large volumetric change, suggesting that FBT should be a good candidate for producing a large BCE. Powder X‐ray diffraction and calorimetry reveal that the material is highly susceptible to applied pressure, as the transition temperature spans the range from 318 at ambient pressure to 383 K at 2.6 kbar. Despite the large shift in the spin‐transition temperature, its nonhysteretic character is maintained under applied pressure. Such behavior leads to a remarkably large and reversible BCE, characterized by an isothermal entropy change of 120 J kg−1 K−1 and an adiabatic temperature change of 35 K, which are among the highest reversible values reported for any caloric material thus far.

Abstract:The presence of colossal and reversible barocaloric effects in LiCB11H12, a renowned solid electrolyte, is evidenced near its order–disorder phase transition. It is observed that lattice vibrations primarily contribute to these barocaloric effects. Additionally, although the diffusion of lithium ions only marginally contributes to the accompanying entropy change, it plays a crucial role in facilitating the molecular order–disorder phase transition. Solid‐state methods for cooling and heating promise a sustainable alternative to current compression cycles of greenhouse gases and inefficient fuel‐burning heaters. Barocaloric effects (BCE) driven by hydrostatic pressure (p) are especially encouraging in terms of large adiabatic temperature changes (|ΔT| ≈ 10 K) and isothermal entropy changes (|ΔS| ≈ 100 J K−1 kg−1). However, BCE typically require large pressure shifts due to irreversibility issues, and sizeable |ΔT| and |ΔS| seldom are realized in a same material. Here, the existence of colossal and reversible BCE in LiCB11H12 is demonstrated near its order‐disorder phase transition at ≈380 K. Specifically, for Δp ≈ 0.23 (0.10) GPa, |ΔSrev| = 280 (200) J K−1 kg−1 and |ΔTrev| = 32 (10) K are measured, which individually rival with state‐of‐the‐art BCE figures. Furthermore, pressure shifts of the order of 0.1 GPa yield huge reversible barocaloric strengths of ≈2 J K−1 kg−1 MPa−1. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to quantify the role of lattice vibrations, molecular reorientations, and ion diffusion on the disclosed BCE. Interestingly, lattice vibrations are found to contribute the most to |ΔS| while the diffusion of lithium ions, despite adding up only slightly to the entropy change, is crucial in enabling the molecular order–disorder phase transition.

Abstract:Abstract Barocaloric materials are particularly promising for green and efficient solid-state cooling technology because of their great potential in terms of cooling performance. However, intermetallic materials with outstanding barocaloric effects under low hydrostatic pressure are especially lacking, which has severely delayed the development of barocaloric refrigeration. Here, in a rare-earth intermetallic La-Ce-Fe-Si-H, we achieve a giant specific barocaloric temperature change of 8 K per kbar according to direct measurements of the adiabatic temperature change Δ T BCE under hydrostatic pressure, which is confirmed by a phenomenological transition simulation. This barocaloric strength is significantly better than those in previously reported phase-transitioned alloys. By using a cutting-edge in situ neutron diffraction technique operating under simultaneously varying temperature, magnetic field, and hydrostatic pressure, we reveal that the large isotropic transition volume change in La-Ce-Fe-Si-H plays a crucial role in the giant barocaloric effect. Additionally, we employ Landau expansion theory to demonstrate that the high sensitivity of the transition temperature to the applied pressure produces the sizable Δ T BCE in the itinerant electron metamagnetic transition alloys. Our results provide insight into the development of high-performance barocaloric materials and related cooling systems.

Abstract:Hexagonal MnMX-based (M = Co or Ni, X = Si or Ge) alloys exhibit giant reversible barocaloric effects. However, giant volume expansion would result in the as-cast MnMX ingots fragmenting into powders, and inevitably bring the deterioration of mechanical properties and formability. Grain fragmentation can bring degradation of structural transformation entropy change during cyclic application and removal of pressure. In this paper, giant reversible barocaloric effects with high thermal cycle stability can be achieved in the epoxy bonded (MnCoGe) 0.96 (CuCoSn) 0.04 composite. Giant reversible isothermal entropy change of 43.0 J∙kg −1 ∙K −1 and adiabatic temperature change from barocaloric effects (Δ T BCE ) of 15.6 K can be obtained within a wide temperature span of 30 K at 360 MPa, which is mainly attributed to the integration of the change in the transition temperature driven by pressure of −101 K∙GPa −1 and suitable thermal hysteresis of 11.1 K. Further, the variation of reversible Δ T BCE against the applied hydrostatic pressure reaches up to 43 K∙GPa −1 , which is at the highest level among the other reported giant barocaloric compounds. More importantly, after 60 thermal cycles, the composite does not break and the calorimetric curves coincide well, demonstrating good thermal cycle stability.

Abstract:Barocaloric materials hold great promise for next-generation solid-state cooling devices because of their green and efficient cooling performance. The insights into low-pressure-driven barocaloric materials are expected to pave the way for the widespread application of barocaloric refrigeration technology. Here, we reveal the low-pressure-driven large barocaloric effect (BCE) modulated by geometrical frustrations in Mn3Pt. The highest sensitivity to pressure of Mn3Pt in metal BCE materials results in an excellent temperature-change strength of 9.77 K 100-1 MPa-1. Neutron powder diffraction and first-principles calculations point out the dual effect of geometrical frustration on modulating the unusual BCE, which not only induces giant volume expansion by inspiring strong spin fluctuation and magnetic moment but also enhances the sensitivity of magnetic phase transition. The model of the dual effect of geometrical frustration in magnets with geometrical frustration is established, which will promote the research progress of barocaloric refrigeration devices.

Abstract:Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to external fields and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ($|\Delta T| \sim 1$ K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict the existence of colossal barocaloric effects (isothermal entropy changes of $|\Delta S| \sim 100$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$) in the energy material Li$_{2}$B$_{12}$H$_{12}$ by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we estimate $|\Delta S| = 387$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$ and $|\Delta T| = 26$ K for an applied pressure of $P = 0.4$ GPa at $T = 475$ K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by an order-disorder phase transformation that exhibits a fair degree of reversibility and involves coexisting Li$^{+}$ diffusion and (BH)$_{12}^{-2}$ reorientational motion at high temperatures.

Abstract:Abstract Solid-state refrigeration based on the caloric effect is viewed as a promising efficient and clean refrigeration technology. Barocaloric materials were developed rapidly but have since encountered a general obstacle: the prominent caloric effect cannot be utilized reversibly under moderate pressure. Here, we report a mechanism of an emergent large, reversible barocaloric effect (BCE) under low pressure in the hybrid organic–inorganic layered perovskite (CH 3 –(CH 2 ) n −1 –NH 3 ) 2 MnCl 4 ( n = 9,10), which show the reversible barocaloric entropy change as high as Δ S r ∼ 218, 230 J kg −1 K −1 at 0.08 GPa around the transition temperature ( T s ∼ 294, 311.5 K). To reveal the mechanism, single-crystal (CH 3 –(CH 2 ) n −1 –NH 3 ) 2 MnCl 4 ( n = 10) was successfully synthesized, and high-resolution single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) was carried out. Then, the underlying mechanism was determined by combining infrared (IR) spectroscopy and density function theory (DFT) calculations. The colossal reversible BCE and the very small hysteresis of 2.6 K (0.1 K/min) and 4.0 K (1 K/min) are closely related to the specific hybrid organic–inorganic structure and single-crystal nature. The drastic transformation of organic chains confined to the metallic frame from ordered rigidity to disordered flexibility is responsible for the large phase-transition entropy comparable to the melting entropy of organic chains. This study provides new insights into the design of novel barocaloric materials by utilizing the advantages of specific organic–inorganic hybrid characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract One of the greatest obstacles to the real application of solid-state refrigeration is the huge driving fields. Here, we report a giant barocaloric effect in inorganic NH 4 I with reversible entropy changes of $$\Delta {S}_{{P}_{0}\to P}^{{{\max }}}$$ Δ S P 0 → P max ∼71 J K −1 kg −1 around room temperature, associated with a structural phase transition. The phase transition temperature, T t , varies dramatically with pressure at a rate of d T t /d P ∼0.79 K MPa −1 , which leads to a very small saturation driving pressure of Δ P ∼40 MPa, an extremely large barocaloric strength of $$\left|\Delta {S}_{{P}_{0}\to P}^{{{\max }}}/\Delta P\right|$$ Δ S P 0 → P max / Δ P ∼1.78 J K −1 kg −1 MPa −1 , as well as a broad temperature span of ∼41 K under 80 MPa. Comprehensive characterizations of the crystal structures and atomic dynamics by neutron scattering reveal that a strong reorientation-vibration coupling is responsible for the large pressure sensitivity of T t . This work is expected to advance the practical application of barocaloric refrigeration.

Abstract:The discovery of colossal barocaloric effects in organic plastic crystals has significantly advanced the development of solid‐state refrigerant techniques. Adapting to the real application, a tradeoff of various barocaloric performances has to be achieved. Here, it is reported a novel plastic crystal system, that is, carboranes (C2B10H12), including three positional isomers: ortho‐carborane, meta‐carborane, and para‐carborane, which are characterized by C2v, C2v, D5d point groups, respectively. They all undergo an orthorhombic‐to‐tetragonal phase transition around room temperature. Compared to the previously reported organic plastic crystals, this system exhibits a combination of large pressure‐normalized entropy changes, the high‐pressure sensitivity of the transition temperature, small thermal hysteresis, and so forth. Their barocaloric performances are positional‐isomerism dependent, and the best performances are obtained in para‐carborane with maximum entropy changes of about 106.2 J kg−1 K−1 achieved under pressure changes below 30 MPa. This study not only suggests that carboranes would be a considerably promising working material for barocaloric refrigeration at room temperature but also indicates that delicate tuning of molecular isomerism is an effective strategy to enhance barocaloric performances. Plastic crystals of carboranes exhibit excellent barocaloric performances around room temperature. A series of inversely correlated performances are simultaneously optimized so that carboranes are ranked the best among current leading materials. Most impressive is the saturation pressure, which is as low as 30 MPa, leading to superior pressure‐normalized entropy changes.

Abstract:Solid-state cooling based on caloric effects is considered a viable alternative to replace the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration systems. Regarding barocaloric materials, recent results show that elastomers are promising candidates for cooling applications around room-temperature. In the present paper, we report supergiant barocaloric effects observed in acetoxy silicone rubber—a very popular, low-cost and environmentally friendly elastomer. Huge values of adiabatic temperature change and reversible isothermal entropy change were obtained upon moderate applied pressures and relatively low strains. These huge barocaloric changes are associated both to the polymer chain rearrangements induced by confined compression and to the first-order structural transition. The results are comparable to the best barocaloric materials reported so far, opening encouraging prospects for the application of elastomers in near future solid-state cooling devices.

Abstract:Barocaloric (BC) refrigeration is a new type of clean and energy-efficiency refrigeration technology. However, the giant and colossal BC effects are mainly based on the first-order phase transitions, leading to the unfavorable hysteresis. Here we report the giant BC effect along with weak hysteresis at the antiferromagnetic (AFM) to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition (TN = 283 K) in antiperovskite PdNMn3 compound. The reversible isothermal entropy change reaches 28.3 J kg−1 K−1 under 290 MPa. The hysteresis is only about 2 K, which is associated with a small volumetric change ΔV/V at TN (~0.2%). The magnetic entropy is proposed to mainly contribute to the entropy change at TN , which compensates for the reduced lattice contribution due to the small ΔV/V. Our result demonstrates the possibility of realizing giant BC effect together with weak hysteresis in materials where both crystallographic and non-crystallographic entropy changes cooperate at the first-order phase transition (FOPT).

Abstract:In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.202009476">2009476</a>, Yuichi Shimakawa and co-workers present an A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite NdCu3Fe4O12 that releases significant latent heat at the intersite-charge-transfer transition temperature near room temperature. The transition is first-order and accompanied by an unusual magnetic ordering and a large volume change, and thus, it causes a large entropy change, which is utilized through a colossal barocaloric effect. Efficient refrigeration can be realized through this effect.

Abstract:Barocaloric cooling as an emerging cooling technology offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional vapor compression refrigeration. Research on barocaloric materials primarily concentrates on solid-solid phase change materials (PCMs), among which plastic crystals exhibit colossal barocaloric effect. Solid-liquid PCMs such as paraffin also exhibit giant barocaloric effect, however, their potential is often overshadowed by leakage issues. In this work, a strategy is demonstrated by encapsulating solid-liquid PCMs into porous carbon matrixes to generate a large family of colossal barocaloric materials. In practice, by orthogonally combining paraffins with encapsulation matrixes like graphene foam, carbon nanotube foam, and carbon foam, it can be obtained composites that work without leakage issues. The significant advantage is their colossal barocaloric effect with the highest entropy value up to 570 J K-1 kg-1 in paraffin-20@graphene foam. Moreover, the composites possess thermal conductivity up to 89.9 W m-1 K-1 in paraffin-20@carbon foam, and tunable working temperature in the range of 270-330 K. Most importantly, this strategy, demonstrated with 5 solid-liquid PCMs and 3 encapsulation matrixes in this work, is just the beginning. Further exploration with more materials can develop a huge family of encapsulated solid-liquid PCMs with colossal barocaloric performance for modern cooling technology. An encapsulation strategy combining solid-liquid phase change materials into porous carbon matrixes are developed to generate a large family of materials with colossal barocaloric performance. image

Abstract:Due to its high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness, solid-state cooling based on the barocaloric (BC) effect represents a promising alternative to traditional refrigeration technologies relying on greenhouse gases. Plastic crystals displaying orientational order-disorder solid-solid phase transitions have emerged among the most gifted materials on which to realize the full potential of BC solid-state cooling. However, a comprehensive understanding of the atomistic mechanisms on which order-disorder BC effects are sustained is still missing, and rigorous and systematic methods for quantitatively evaluating and anticipating them have not been yet established. Here, we present a computational approach for the assessment and prediction of BC effects in orientationally disordered materials that relies on atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and emulates quasi-direct calorimetric BC measurements. Remarkably, the proposed computational approach allows for a precise determination of the partial contributions to the total entropy stemming from the vibrational and molecular orientational degrees of freedom. Our BC simulation method is applied on the technologically relevant material CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPI), finding giant BC isothermal entropy changes ( ∣ Δ S BC ∣ ~ 10 J K −1 kg −1 ) under moderate pressure shifts of ~0.1 GPa. Intriguingly, our computational analysis of MAPI reveals that changes in the vibrational degrees of freedom of the molecular cations, not their reorientational motion, have a major influence on the entropy change that accompanies the order-disorder solid-solid phase transition.

Abstract:This article describes a mean-field theoretical model for Spin-Crossover (SCO) materials and explores its implications. It is based on a simple Hamiltonian that yields the high spin molar fraction as a function of temperature and pressure, as well as a temperature-pressure phase diagram for the SCO transition. In order to test the model, we apply it to the giant Barocaloric Effect (BCE) of the SCO material [FeL$_2$][BF$_4$]$_2$ and comprehensively analyse its behavior. We found that optical phonons are responsible for 92\% of the total barocaloric entropy change. DFT calculations show that these optical phonons are mainly assigned to the low frequencies modes of vibration ($<400$ cm$^{-1}$), being associated to the Fe coordination.

Abstract:As one of the most likely alternatives to traditional vapor compression refrigeration technology, solid refrigeration technology based on the barocaloric effect (BCE) has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Spin-crossover (SCO) compounds are considered suitable for working at low driving pressures due to high-pressure sensitivity and small hysteresis width. However, the entropy change (ΔSSCO) of the SCO compound is smaller than that of other excellent barocaloric materials (plastic crystals and two-dimensional perovskites). Here, we report the BCE of the SCO compound {Fe(pz)2(BH3CN)2} (pz = pyrazine) with a smaller molar mass and a third source of entropy change besides electron and vibrational entropy changes. Compound {Fe(pz)2(BH3CN)2} exhibits high pressure sensitivity (dT1/2dP= 20.2 K kbar−1) as well as entropy change (ΔSSCO= 202 J kg−1 K−1). The maximum values of reversible isothermal entropy change (ΔSit,rev,max) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad,rev,max) at 1 kbar are only 103 J kg−1 K−1 and ∼0 K, respectively, due to the hysteresis behavior. However, at sufficiently high driving pressures, ΔSit,rev,max exceeds 200 J kg−1 K−1, and ΔTad,rev,max can reach ∼47 K, which exceeds all SCO compounds reported in BCE studies and is comparable to some plastic-crystalline and two-dimensional perovskite barocaloric materials. The excellent BCE of the SCO compound {Fe(pz)2(BH3CN)2} is mainly due to its small molar mass, which makes the unit mass compound exhibit higher ΔSSCO, while the introduction of the third source of entropy change—the reorientation entropy change (ΔSreo), only plays a small role. This is expected to promote the practical application of SCO compounds as barocaloric refrigerants.

Abstract:In the present work, a low-pressure-induced large reversible barocaloric effect was achieved in (MnNiGe)0.91-(FeCoGe)0.09 alloys. The isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change are as high as 32.8 J·kg−1K−1 and 5.2 K by applying hydrostatic pressure of 1 kbar, respectively. The reversible isothermal entropy change of 19.3 J·kg−1K−1 and reversible adiabatic temperature change of 3.6 K within a temperature span of 16 K at 1 kbar have been achieved. Good reversible barocaloric performance is attributed to the combination of the thermal hysteresis of 6.4 K and the transition temperature shift with the pressure of 6.9 K·kbar−1.
