Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising energy conversion technology as it can store intermittent renewable electricity while converting CO2 to value-added products using microorganisms as catalysts. However, the performance of CH4-producing MES is severely limited by the poor biofilm formation and the low loading surface area of biocathodes. Here, a novel cathode with a GO/PEDOT film was fabricated by electropolymerizing conductive poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on graphene oxide (GO) film modified carbon cloth. The GO/PEDOT modified electrode was applied to the MES of CO2 reduction to CH4, and a maximum CH4 production rate of 315.3 ± 13.2 mmol per m2 per day (7.06 ± 0.3 l per m2 per day) (the highest rate reported up to now at −0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl) was achieved with a Faraday efficiency > 92% at an operating potential of −0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which increased 3.9-fold in contrast to the bare carbon cloth cathode. Electrochemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses of microbial communities indicated that the GO/PEDOT film not only improved biofilm formation, but also increased the area for microbial colonization. This study demonstrates that GO/PEDOT film modified carbon cloth is a promising material for biocathodes of CH4-producing MES and can be beneficial to the development of MES.

Magnetic assembling GO/Fe3O4/microbes as hybridized biofilms for enhanced methane production in microbial electrosynthesis

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is capable of converting CO2 to CH4 using microorganisms as biocatalysts, but its performance is significantly restrained by the inherent weakness of naturally-grown biofilms, especially the low biomass loading on biocathodes. Here, we report a top-down biosynthetic approach to fabricate hybridized biofilms on biocathodes, and significantly enhance the methane production. In particular, microbes are captured and artificially loaded on the biocathode with the presence of graphene oxide (GO) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The aggregate of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Fe3O4 and microbes brought in an initial high loading of microbes through magnetic assembling, resulting in a thick and dense biofilm on the rGO/Fe3O4 scaffold. The biocathode achieved an unprecedented CH4-producting rate of 605 ± 119 mmol/m2/d at −0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which increased by 14.5-fold compared to the carbon cloth biocathode. This approach provides new opportunities for the development of high-performance electrochemically-active biofilms for MES, as well as other bioelectrochemical systems.

Abstract:Regulating cathodic interface properties towards highly effective CH4 production from CO2 is of great importance for energy storage using microbial electro-synthesis (MES). Herein, the feasibility and mechanism of two typical redox mediators, neutral red (NR) and anthraquinone-2, 6-disulfonate (AQDS), were evaluated for the improvement of CH4 formation from CO2 reduction in mixed-culture biocathodes of MESs. Results showed that the CH4 formation rates of biocathodes after modification with NR and AQDS were 5.8 and 3.5 times higher than that of unaltered cathodes. Moreover, the coulombic efficiency of CH4 formation improved from 44.27 ± 4.01% of the control cathode to 64.30 ± 4.83% and 62.26 ± 2.87% after modification with NR and AQDS, respectively. Consequently, the energy efficiency of MESs after cathode modification with NR and AQDS increased to 58.33 ± 3.17% and 53.21 ± 4.11% compared to 38.20 ± 3.12% without modification. Such improvements were likely attributed to the enhanced extracellular electron transfer of microbes, the reduction in internal resistances and the enrichment of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in the mixed-culture biocathodes after modification with NR and AQDS. This study provides an alternative strategy to regulate cathodic interface in MESs for renewable energy storage and biomethane production from CO2.

Abstract:Adding conductive materials to the cathode of a microbial electrochemical system (MES) can alter the route of interspecies electron transfer and the kinetics of reduction reactions. We tested reductive dechlorination of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), along with CH4 production, in MES systems whose cathodes were coated with conductive magnetite nanoparticles (NaFe), biochar (BC), magnetic biochar (FeBC), or anti-conductive silica biochar (SiBC). Coating with NaFe enriched electroactive microorganisms, boosted electro-bioreduction, and accelerated γ-HCH dechlorination and CH4 production. In contrast, BC only accelerated dechlorination, while FeBC only accelerated methanogenesis, because of their assemblies of functional taxa that selectively transferred electrons to those electron sinks. SiBC, which decreased electro-bioreduction, yielded the highest CH4 production and increased methanogens and the mcrA gene. This study provides a strategy to selectively control the distribution of electrons between reductive dechlorination and methanogenesis by adding conductive or anti-conductive materials to the MES's cathode. If the goal is to maximize dechlorination and minimize methane generation, then BC is the optimal conductive material. If the goal is to accelerate electro-bioreduction, then the best addition is NaFe. If the goal is to increase the rate of methanogenesis, adding anti-conductive SiBC is the best.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are increasingly recognized as a promising technology for converting CO 2 to CH 4 , offering the dual benefits of energy recovery from organic wastewater and CO 2 emission reduction. A critical aspect of this technology is the enhancement of the electron-accepting capacity of the methanogenic biocathode to improve CH 4 production efficiency. This study demonstrates that adjusting the cathode resistivity is an effective way to control the electric field intensity, thereby enhancing the electron accepting capacity and CH 4 production. By maintaining the electric field intensity within approximately 8.50–10.83 mV·cm −1 , the CH 4 yield was observed to increase by up to two-fold. The improvement in CH 4 production under optimized electric field conditions was attributed to the enhancement of the direct accepting capacity of the biocathode. This enhancement was primarily due to an increase in the relative abundance of Methanosaeta by approximately 10 % and an up to 83.78 % rise in the electron-accepting capacity of the extracellular polymeric substance. These insights offer a new perspective on the operation of methanogenic biocathodes and propose a novel biocathode construction methodology based on these findings, thus contributing to the enhancement of MEC efficiency.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical CO2 reduction and in-situ biogas upgrading can effectively reduce the CO2 content in biogas produced during anaerobic digestion, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and achieving carbon reduction. pH is an important indicator in this process as it can significantly change the solubility and forms of CO2 in the aquatic phase. This study comprehensively evaluated the optimal pH value from the perspectives of methane upgrading performance and electron utilization efficiency and observed and analyzed the morphology of the biofilm on the electrode surface and the microbial community in the cathodic region under optimal conditions. The results showed that the optimal pH was 6.5; methane content reached ~88.3% in the biogas; methane production reached a maximum of 22.1 ± 0.1 mmol·d−1, with an increase in methane production compared to the control group reaching a maximum of 1.7 mmol·d−1; and CO2 conversion rate reached ~22.9%. A dense biofilm with a thickness of 51.3 μm formed on the electrode surface, with Methanobacterium being the dominant genus, with a high relative abundance of 69.3%, and Geobacter had a relative abundance of 20.1%. The above findings have important guiding significance for the practical application of methane upgrading.

Dual Metal Active Sites and an Enhanced Electric Field Boosting CO2 Reduction to CH4 in an Electromethanogenesis System

Abstract:An electromethanogenesis system incorporating CO2-reducing microorganisms and a cathode material offers a promising approach for CO2 fixation with improved thermodynamic efficiencies. However, low electron transfer rates at microorganism-cathode interfaces can limit CO2 conversion efficiency. A nanoarrays/bacteria hybrid system was proposed for bioelectrochemical reduction of CO2 to CH4. The hierarchical nanoarrays derived from metal-organic frameworks enhanced the CO2 conversion rate with the optimization of both a local electric field and Ni/Co dual metal active sites. Optimizing the electric field intensity (similar to 1.25-fold compared to bare CF) and introducing a heterojunction on the cathode material boosted the electron transfer and achieved a higher current density (maximum 10 A/m(2)) at -0.9 V (vs Ag/AgCl) for 9.6-fold CH4 production (697.9 mmol.day(-1).m(-2)) compared to the control. The dual metal active sites provided extra electron shuttles from a cathode to a microorganism to boost the electron transfer for methane production with a thicker (similar to 1.3-fold) and enhanced conductive EPS production (similar to 1.68-fold). A decreased internal resistance, a reconstituted microbial community, and an enhanced methane production rate indicated an increase in the microbial electron transfer between Methanobacterium and Clostridia, resulting in a selective bioelectroreduction (84%) of CO2 to CH4. This study suggests that nanointerface engineering in electromethanogenesis systems can effectively regulate selective CO2 reduction for new generation biogas projects.

Abstract:A comprehensive investigation into the design and electrochemical optimization of composite electrodes consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/graphene oxide (GO)/Methanococcus deltae and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Methanococcus deltae hybrids, anchored onto stainless-steel (SS) substrates, has been conducted. The GO and rGO materials were synthesized using a modified Hummer method. The resulting SS/PEDOT/GO and SS/PEDOT/rGO composite electrodes were subjected to systematic electrochemical characterization, focusing on the PEDOT p-type and n-type doping/undoping processes within diverse solvent environments (CH3CN and H2O) and electrolyte compositions (LiClO4 and KCl). Raman spectroscopy analysis confirmed the successful integration of graphene derivatives into the electrode structures, while field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed increased surface roughness upon GO and rGO incorporation. This increase in surface roughness is believed to enhance the adhesion of Methanococcus deltae microorganisms and facilitate efficient electron transport. Electrochemical measurements showed that the resulting SS/PEDOT/GO and SS/PEDOT/rGO anodes exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity. The SS/PEDOT/GO electrode achieved a maximum power density of 1014.420 mW/cm2, while the SS/PEDOT/rGO electrode reached 632.019 mW/cm2.

Abstract:Electromethanogenesis is an innovative technology addressing the need of storing renewable energy from unprogrammable sources. It allows for the electrochemical production of methane from CO 2 -rich wastes on microbial cathodes, in a logic of power-to-gas (BEP2G). The challenge of cost-effective and sustainable biocathodes enhancing the microorganism performance and yield of electromethanogenesis is approached in this work. For the first time, porous carbonaceous cathodes were functionalized with Cu nanoparticles and hydroxyapatite (HAP) and successfully experimented for supporting microbial CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to methane. Tests were performed in a double chamber system under CO 2 flow at 45 °C. Next Generation Sequencing of 16S RNA indicated that the microbial pool on the cathodes was mostly enriched in Metanobacteriaceae (hydrogenotrophic Archaea) and different fermenting bacteria, depending on the cathode type. High methane production on cathodes made of Cu 20%, HAP 10%, and carbon balance (20Cu/10HAP) was achieved, with a maximum of 866 ± 199 mmol m −2 d −1 (projected cathode area, Coulombic efficiency of 64%), corresponding to values comparable to the maximum in literature, but in shorter timespans (8 vs. 30 days). The documented effect of pH stabilization in the cathodic chamber by HAP was one of the main parameters that concurred to the selectivity of CO 2 RR towards methane.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is an electrochemical reduction technology through which microorganisms attached to a cathode are driven by electricity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) into industrial chemicals. However, the limited contact time with biocatalysts affects the performance of MES because of low CO2 solubility. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) particles with different pore diameters modified cathodes were prepared. Results showed that the ZIF-8 modified electrode obtained the maximum acetate production rate (0.13 g L−1 d−1), which was 1.4 times that of bare CF, and the accumulated acetate concentration reached 4.04 ± 0.1 g L−1 within 30 days. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller test and CO2 adsorption characteristic evaluation indicated that ZIF-8 had a high specific surface area and an excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. Scanning electron microscopy and microbial community analysis revealed that ZIF-8 modified electrodes were beneficial to biofilm formation and increased the enrichment of Acetobacterium and Arcobacter. Therefore, CO2-adsorbing materials modified electrodes are effective in improving the performance of MES.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis is a biocathode-driven device for chemicals production from carbon dioxide reduction and has been a promising carbon-consuming technology to alleviate the greenhouse effect and acquire the renewable energy. However, previous studies primarily focused on the effect of the operating parameters on the biocathode with an indirect electron transfer (IDET) pathway instead of a direct electron transfer (DET) pathway for CO2 reduction. In this work, we aim to study the effect of the operating parameters, including temperature, inorganic carbon source, and initial pH value, on the biocathode with a DET pathway for CO2 reduction to CH4. The CH4-producing biocathodes showed the respective optimum performance at the condition of 35 °C temperature, 4 g L−1 bicarbonate concentration, and pH 7.5 catholyte. This work provides an important guidance for the operation and development of microbial electrosynthesis for CO2 reduction to chemicals.

Enhancing Extracellular Electron Transfer of Geobacter sulfurreducens in Bioelectrochemical Systems Using N-Doped Fe3O4@Carbon Dots

Abstract:A nanomaterial-living cell biohybrid system is an efficient energy conversion method due to enhanced interactions between inorganic materials and bacteria. However, inefficient electron transfer at the interface of the biohybrid remains as a limiting factor. Herein, an inorganic-biologic hybrid was proposed by combining a typical electroactive bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens, and a highly conductive N-doped Fe3O4 with a carbon dot shell (Fe3O4@CD) to boost energy conversion in bioelectrochemical systems (including microbial electrolytic cells and electro-methanogenesis). One-potsynthesized Fe3O4@CDs enhanced extracellular electron transfer in the biohybrid system by forming an interaction network with conductive proteins inside and outside G. sulfurreducens. In the microbial electrolytic cell, the maximum current of Fe3O4@CDs-fed cells was 6.37 times higher than that of the control group without nanoparticle addition. This enhanced performance was accompanied with higher bioactivity, higher cellular adhesion, and lower biofilm resistance. The G. sulfurreducens-Fe3O4@CDs biohybrids supplemented during electro-methanogenesis remained stable on anodes, which promoted microbial syntrophy. The metabolic methanogenesis pathways are strongly related to the electron transfer ability of G. sulfurreducens, which demonstrates a new strategy to promote extracellular electron transfer through the constructed biohybrid system.
Alternating polarization steered CO2 bio-electroreduction selectivity with stepped extracellular electron transfer

Abstract:Convoluted selectivity trend under mismatched electron transfer speed and a missing link between product distribution and redox microenvironment on electrode surface could hinder the applicability of bio-electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction for renewable fuels products. Herein, asymmetrically alternating polarization was employed to establish stepped electron transfer pathways in CO2-fixation biohybrids to enhance the selectivity of CO2 to CH4 at high overpotentials. An optimized dynamic balance between oxidized and reduced humic acid improved microbes' coverage ratio and bioactivity for a maximum of 1.8-fold methane production rate (1131.0 ∼ 2954.8 mmol/m2/day). Promoting interspecies electron transfer for methane production was based on electron relay from humic acid in Clostriadiales and Bacterodiale to coenzyme F420 in Methanobacterium. Unblocking clogged electrons in humic acid with only reduced status boosted extracellular electron transfer for 1.31 ∼ 2.47-fold CH4 selectivity (57.11 ∼ 87.36 %). Alternating polarization optimized the redox microenvironment around the electrode and facilitated the electron transfer process to promote methanogenesis selectivity. Therefore, the appropriate polarization method provided a unique control strategy for establishing high-performance CO2-fixation systems.

Abstract:Microbial electrochemical reduction of CO2 gas to value‐added chemical products requires the development of an electrode architecture with a three‐phase interface for efficient mass transport. A hybrid bioinorganic system for CO2 reduction to CH4 is developed by coupling a new electrode architecture with enriched methanogenic community. The novel electrode design consists of porous nickel hollow fibers, which act as an inorganic electrocatalyst for hydrogen generation from proton reduction and as a gas‐transfer membrane for direct CO2 delivery to CO2‐fixing hydrogenotrophic methanogens (biological catalyst) on the cathode through the pores of the hollow fibers. These unique features of the electrode create a suitable environment for the enrichment of methanogens, which utilize the hydrogen as a source of reducing equivalents for the conversion of CO2 to CH4. The performance of the nickel electrode is tested in microbial electrosynthesis cells operated at cathode potential of −1 V versus Ag/AgCl, achieving high faradaic efficiency of 77% for CH4. The superior performance of the hybrid bioinorganic system is attributed to the electrode architecture, which provides a three‐phase boundary for gas–liquid reactions, with the reactions supported by the inorganic and biological catalysts. Nickel‐based conductive, catalytic, and porous hollow fiber for effective microbial electrochemical reduction of CO2 to methane; hence addressing two challenges facing society in the current century (i.e., energy crisis and global warming).

Abstract:In order to improve microbial electromethane generation (mEMG) with CO2 conversion using excess renewable power, an electrical stimulation period was optimized to enrich active microorganisms on a biocathode and directionally strengthened electron transfer with a start-up mode of stepwise promoted intermittent voltage. A highly adaptive microbial community was enriched on the biocathode for an electrical stimulation period of 1 h with the highest population abundance and diversity of archaea and bacteria. The living cell density and average coverage area ratio on the biocathode were 81.37 and 22.07%, respectively. The tryptophan, fulvic acid, and humic acid substances with peak fluorescence intensities in extracelluar polymers effectively improved electron transport in the mEMG system. The highest area capacitance of the biocathode was 13.96 mF/cm2. The biofilm and solution resistances first decreased to valleys (102.3 and 1.541 omega) and then increased. The highest faradaic efficiency (95.37%) of CH4 was obtained with 2.35 mu mol/L coenzyme F420, leading to an increased CH4 production rate by 39.68%.
Self-replicating Biophotoelectrochemistry System for Sustainable CO Methanation

Abstract:Efficient conversion of CO-rich gas to methane (CH4) provides an effective energy solution by taking advantage of existing natural gas infrastructures. However, traditional chemical and biological conversions face different challenges. Herein, an innovative biophotoelectrochemistry (BPEC) system using Methanosarcina barkeri-CdS as a biohybrid catalyst was successfully employed for CO methanation. Compared with CO2-fed BPEC, BPEC-CO significantly extended the CH4 producing time by 1.7-fold and exhibited a higher CH4 yield by 9.5-fold under light irradiation. This superior conversion of CO resulted from the fact that CO could serve as an effective quencher of reactive species along with the photoelectron production. In addition, CO was used as a carbon source either directly or indirectly via the produced CO2 for M. barkeri. Such a process improved the redox activities of membrane-bound proteins for BPEC methanogenesis. These results were consistent with the transcriptomic analyses, in which the genes for the putative CO oxidation and CO2 reduction pathways in M. barkeri were highly expressed, while the gene expression for reactive oxygen species detoxification remained relatively stable under light irradiation. Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) toward formate production can be operated under mild conditions with high energy conversion efficiency while migrating the greenhouse effect. Herein, an integrated 3D open network of interconnected bismuthene arrays (3D Bi-ene-A/CM) is fabricated via in situ electrochemically topotactic transformation from BiOCOOH nanosheet arrays supported on the copper mesh. The resulted 3D Bi-ene-A/CM consists of 2D atomically thin metallic bismuthene (Bi-ene) in the form of an integrated array superstructure with a 3D interconnected and open network, which harvests the multiple structural advantages of both metallenes and self-supported electrodes for electrocatalysis. Such distinctive superstructure affords the maximized quantity and availability of the active sites with high intrinsic activity and superior charge and mass transfer capability, endowing the catalyst with good CO2 RR performance for stable formate production with high Faradaic efficiency (≈90%) and current density (>300 mA cm-2 ). Theoretical calculation verifies the superior intermediate stabilization of the dominant Bi plane during CO2 RR. Moreover, by further coupling anodic methanol oxidation reaction, an exotic electrolytic system enables highly energy-efficient and value-added pair-electrosynthesis for concurrent formate production at both electrodes, achieving substantially improved electrochemical and economic efficiency and revealing the feasibility for practical implementation.

Abstract:The hydrogen energy and CO2 reduction in-situ recombination has drawn increasing attention. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) integrated with photocatalytic materials is a novel technology for CO2 utilization. Here, MES with the photocathode CoP-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 was constructed using Ralstonia eutropha as biocatalyst to generate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). The integration of CoP and Fe2O3/g-C3N4 facilitated electron–hole pair separation and electron transfer, which enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction and provided additional reducing power for CO2 conversion. Simultaneously, the concentration of reactive oxygen species was also considerably reduced, increasing the production of PHB. In particular, 87.54 mg/L of PHB was obtained in CoP-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 at − 1.05 V, which is about three times higher than that in carbon felt. At − 0.9 V, PHB concentration further increased to 142.20 mg/L. This study provides a new approach for converting CO2 into multicarbon compounds in situ electrolysis of water under visible light.

Abstract:Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a novel CO2 utilization technology. Biocatalysts in this process may use electrons obtained from a photovoltaic system to reduce CO2 to chemicals and realize energy conversion from solar energy to chemical energy. The photoelectric material CuO/g-C3N4 was directly introduced into the MES system using mixed culture as biocatalyst in this study. CuO/g-C3N4 can effectively absorb light and presents satisfactory electron and hole separation ability. Photogenerated electrons from CuO/g-C3N4 enhanced the electron transfer rate and reduced cathodic charge transfer resistance. CuO/g-C3N4 mainly improved the electron supply of electroautotrophic microorganisms through direct electron transfer rather than indirect electron transfer via hydrogen. Photogenerated holes can combine electrons from anode and provide extra driving force to improve the MES performance. Furthermore, the CuO/g-C3N4 photocathode also improved the biocatalytic activity by increasing the total amount of biocatalyst and regulating cathodic microbial community composition. Acetate production rate in MES with the CuO/g-C3N4 photocathode was 2.6 times higher than that of the control group. This study provides a new strategy for semiconductor photocathodes to improve the MES performance with mixed culture.
