Abstract:A multiwalled carbon nanotube∕polyaniline composite with cablelike morphology has been synthesized by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization directed with cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. It is interestingly found that with increasing carbon nanotube loading from 0 to 24.8wt%, the conductivity increases by two orders of magnitude and the Mott’s characteristic temperature T0 which depends on the hopping barrier decreases by three orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the low-temperature magnetoresistance has also changed the sign from positive to negative. The results reveal a strong coupling between the carbon nanotube and the tightly coated polymer chains, which enhances the average localization length and the electronic properties of the composites.

Abstract:To functionalize the smart nanocomposites, the nanocomposites of CNTs/polyaniline with pending calix [8] arene were prepared. A series of characterizations were performed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, The UV-Vis (Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy), et al. The photoconductivity response to visible light and 808 nm laser with low-power were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate with casting method. The results showed that the nanocomposites of CNTs/polyaniline with pending calix [8] arene exhibited good photoresponse to visible light and weak 808 nm laser, but its recoverability was very slow, it needed several hours, and the film-forming property of nanocomposite was not very good. This may be attributed to the results of increased hydrophobicity of nanocomposite because of introducing the calix [8] arene ring. In order to increase the film-forming technology of nanocomposites, the grapheme oxide were obtained with unzipping method of carbon nanotube (CNTs) for enhancing the hydrophilcity of carbon nanomaterials. The nanocomposites of grapheme oxide/polyaniline with pending calix [8] arene were obtained with similar methods, which showed improved film-forming property. The photoresponses to weak visible light and 808 nm laser also showed the similar results. It may develop the nanocomposite with external stimuli response, and have good potential applications in sensors, organic photocatalyst, et al.

Abstract:<p>The measured capacitance, modulus and strength of carbon nanotube-polyaniline (CNT-PANI) composite electrodes render them promising candidates for structural energy storage devices. Here, CNT-PANI composite electrodes are manufactured with electrodeposition of PANI onto the bundle network of CNT mats produced via a floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition process. PANI comprises 0% to 30% by volume of the electrode. The composition, modulus, strength and capacitance of the electrodes is measured in the initial state, after the first charge, and after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. Electrode modulus and strength increase with increasing CNT volume fraction; in contrast, the capacitance increases with increasing PANI mass. Charging or cycling reduce the electrode modulus and strength due to a decrease in CNT bundle volume fraction caused by swelling; the electrode capacitance also decreases due to a reduction in PANI mass. A micromechanical model is able to predict the stress-strain response of pre-charged and cycled electrodes, based upon their measured composition after pre-charging and cycling. The electrodes possess up to 63% of their theoretical capacitance, and their tensile strengths are comparable to those of engineering alloys. Their capacitance and strength decrease by less than 15% after the application of 1000 charge/discharge cycles. These properties illustrate their potential as structural energy storage devices.</p>

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of tubular composite of doped polyaniline (PANI) with carboxylic groups contained multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNTs) by in situ polymerization. Based on the interaction between aniline monomers and c-MWNTs , aniline molecules were adsorbed and polymerized on the surface of c-MWNTs . The structural characterization showed that tubular composites are core (c-MWNTs )-shell (doped-PANI) structures with diameters of several tens of nanometers, and lengths of up to several hundreds of nanometers. The conductivities of these tubular composites are several times higher than that of PANI without MWNT, which will offer new application possibilities.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH)/PANI composites are fabricated via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The crystallinity, chemical structure and morphology of the composites are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Based on the different morphology, the formation mechanism of the composites is proposed and the influence of the morphology on the electrochemical performance is predicted. The electrochemical properties of the composites are evaluated by galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite electrode shows higher specific capacitance than that of the MWCNT/PANI composite, as can be ascribed to the interpenetrating network structure of the MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite and the co-doping of DBSA and MWCNT-COOH. The MWCNT-COOH/PANI composite with 15% MWCNT-COOH presents the best electrochemical performance owing to the synergistic and comprehensive effect of the components. Using functionalized MWCNT provides an efficient approach to prepare high-performance composite materials for electrical energy storage fields.

Abstract:The synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) containing different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by in situ polymerization is reported in this study. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy were used to determine the change in structure of the polymer/CNT composites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the composites had better thermal stability than the pure PANI. Photoluminescence spectra showed a blueshift in the PANI–single-walled nanotube (SWNT) composite. Low-temperature (77–300 K) electrical transport properties were measured in the absence and presence of a magnetic field up to 1 T. Direct-current conductivity exhibited a nonohmic, three-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism. The room-temperature magnetoconductivity of all of the investigated samples except the PANI–SWNT composite were negative; however, it was positive for the PANI–SWNT composite, and its magnitude decreased with increasing temperature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Three-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) networks with high porosity and electrical conductivity have many potential applications in energy and environmental areas, but the network structure is not very stable due to weak inter-CNT interactions. Here, we coat a thin polyaniline (PANI) layer on as-synthesized CNT sponge to obtain a mechanically and electrically stable network, and enable multifunctional applications. The resulting CNT/PANI network serves as stable strain sensors, highly compressible supercapacitor electrode with enhanced volume-normalized capacitance (632 F/cm3), and reinforced nanocomposites with the PANI as intermediate layer between the CNT fillers and polymeric matrix. Our results provide a simple and controllable method for achieving high-stability porous networks composed of CNTs, graphene, or other nanostructures.

Abstract:Novel composite hollow microspheres with the unique "sandwich" structure were prepared by alternate coverage of polyaniline (PANI) and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWNTs) on the surface of spherical templates, formed by in situ polymerization. It was proved that the incorporation of f-MWNTs into the PANI layers could strengthen the stability of hollow microspheres, which had been demonstrated by other researchers in the preparation of carbon nanotubes-based hollow microcapsules. Specially, Raman spectra revealed that the driving force for adsorbing f-MWNTs was not electrostatic interaction, but hydrogen bond and additional pi-pi conjugated interaction. With the measurements of conductivity and electrochemical performance, it was also proved that the facile strategy to introduce f-MWNTs into the shells could effectively improve conductivity and electrochemical performance of PANI hollow microspheres. Abstract:The combination of a vertically aligned carbon nanotube array (CNTA) framework and electrodeposition technique leads to a tube-covering-tube nanostructured polyaniline (PANI)/CNTA composite electrode with hierarchical porous structure, large surface area, and superior conductivity. PANI/CNTA composite electrode has high specific capacitance (1030Fg−1), superior rate capability (95% capacity retention at 118Ag−1), and high stability (5.5% capacity loss after 5000 cycles). Energy storage characteristics of the PANI/CNTA composite are presented in this paper.

Abstract:A composite of polyaniline (PANI) encapsulating mutilwall carbon nanaotube(MWNT) composite nanotube with nanometer size has been synthesized by insitu emulsion polymerization. Nanotube dimensions have been measured and the nature of the association between the components have been observed using SEM and TEM techniques, the diammer of nanocomposite tube is about 6070 nm.The improvement of thermal stability and crystallinity of nanocomposites have been evaluated by using TGA and XRD. The photoconductivity of PANIMWNT composite nanotube has been enhanced markedly and discussed by taking the photoinduced charge transfer between PANI and MWNT into consideration.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) and two types of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different aspect ratios were prepared. The morphology, thermal behavior, and electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and the DC conductivity measurement. It was found that the developed nanocomposite preparation method resulted in good nanotubes dispersion in the polymer matrix for both types of MWCNTs. No appreciable differences in glass transition temperatures were observed between the pure COC and nanocomposites. On the other hand, CNTs significantly improved the thermo-oxidative stability of the COC. The nanocomposites showed significant delay in onset of degradation and the degradation temperature was similar to 40 degrees C higher than that of the pure COC. The nanocomposites also showed substantially higher DC conductivity, which increased with the nanotube concentration and aspect ratio. An increase of DC electrical conductivity over 109 times can be achieved by the addition of 2 wt % CNTs. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012

Abstract:An effective supramolecule-assisted polymerization of polyaniline (Pani) on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be achieved by designing a beta-cyclodextrin polymer (CDP)-CNT system with well-dispersed stability in water and high aniline monomer guest-recognition capability. We demonstrated that CDP-CNTs can be decorated with a controllable layer of Pani due to host-guest interactions between aniline and CDP conjugate on the surface of the CNTs. The composites conferred a high degree of stability to the Pani growth on the CNT, which integrated both the excellent electrical conductivity of the CNTs and the good capacitance of the Pani. During the electrochemical measurements, this CDP-Pani/CNT composite showed a remarkable specific capacitance (720 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) and high rate capability in a three-electrode system, retaining 86% of its original capacitance after the current density was increased 20-fold to 20 A g(-1). The CDP-Pani/CNT electrodes were used to assemble a symmetric supercapacitor device, showed a specific capacitance of 107.4 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), and retained over 97% of their initial capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles at 5 A g(-1). Thus, the strategy established in this work has great potential for establishing controlled growth of polymers and energy storage materials. (c) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Characterization and Electrical Transport Properties of Polyaniline and Multiwall Carbon Nanotube Composites

Abstract:Polyaniline/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PANI/MWNT) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization. Scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, Uv-Visible spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectrophotometry were done to characterize the PANI/MWNT composites. Thermal stability was measured by thermogravimetry analysis. The thermal stability of PANI/MWNT composites becomes higher than PANI. Electrical transport properties of different PANI/MWNT composites were investigated in the temperature range 77 <= T <= 300 K with and without magnetic field up to 1 T. The dc resistivity of PANI/MWNT composites shows different behavior compared to the sample without MWNT. The room temperature dc magnetoconductivity of the samples is negative; however, its sign changes to positive by lowering the temperature, which has been explained by hopping type charge transport. Abstract:In this work, a new nanocomposite in which polyaniline (PANI) is encapsulated in ordered mesoporous carbon (CMK-3 type) has been synthesized. The aniline monomer was introduced into hosts from the vapor phase to avoid the formation of PANI layers on the outer surface. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption/desorption, FT-IR and Raman spectra, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results show that PANI is almost formed in the channels of CMK-3 and the nanocomposite retains the ordered mesostructure. Encapsulated PANI exhibits better thermal stability than pure PANI because of confinement effect in the channel system. The conductivity of PANI/CMK-3 nanocomposite containing 8.4 wt% PANI is 0.78 S/cm at room temperature.

Abstract:Multishell nanotubes of polyaniline and carbon were synthesized via a template approach. A thin layer of MnO2 coated on carbon nanotubes acts as a reactive template for the consequent formation of the polyaniline coating. The polyaniline-carbon nanotubes show enhanced dispersibility in water and can be possibly used as a functional material of electrochemical capacitors with improved performance. The general method operates by coating carbon nanotubes on functional materials such as poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polypyrrole, silica, and carbon.

Abstract:Thorn-like, organometallic-functionalized carbon nanotubes were successfully developed via a novel microwave hydrothermal route. The organometallic complex with methyl orange and iron (III) chloride served as reactive seed template, resulting in the oriented polymerization of pyrrole on the modified carbon nanotubes without the assistance of other oxidants. Morphological and structural characterizations of the carbon nanotube/methyl orange-iron (III) chloride and polypyrrole/carbon nanotube composites were examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical property of the polypyrrole/carbon nanotube composite was elucidated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge. Abstract:Electrical conductive nanocomposite fibers were prepared with polyaniline (PANI), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via electrospinning. The morphology and electrical conductivity of the PANI/PAN/MWCNTs nanocomposite fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Van De Pauw method. Electrical conductivity of nanocomposite fibers increased from 1.79 S·m−1 to 7.97 S·m−1 with increasing the MWCNTs content from 3.0 wt% to 7.0 wt%. Compared with PANI/PAN membranes, the mechanical property of PANI/PAN/MWCNTs nanocomposites fiber membranes decreased. The microwave absorption performance of composite films was analyzed using waveguide tube, which indicated that with the thickness increasing the value of RL reduced from −4.6 to −5.9 dB.

Abstract:In this study, Carbon microcoils (CMCs) have been coated by MnO2 using an electrophoresis deposition (EPD) method. The morphology and structure of the composites are characterized by SEM, Raman and XPS, respectively, and their electrochemical properties are also investigated. The experimental results show a specific capacitance of 115 F.g(-1) at a scan rate of 5 mV.s(-1). Moreover, it retains 96.7 F.g(-1) (89.5%) at current density of 0.2 A.g(-1) after 200 cycles, which illustrates its good cycling stability.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent advances in the electrical property of polymer/carbon nanotube(CNT) composites.CNTs could enhance polymer matrix's electrical property because of its high electrical conductivity.However,CNTs were extremely difficult to disperse in a polymer matrix and usually intend to agglomerate to form stabilized bundles.The main challenge in the preparation of CNT-reinforced composites was to find a way to make CNTs homogeneously dispersed in polymer matrix.So far,there were several methods for the dispersion of carbon nanobubes,such as solution mixing,in-situ polymerization,melt mixing and chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotubes,etc.Numerous studies showed that the percolation threshold and conductivity depend strongly on the polymer type and fabrication method,aspect ratio of CNTs,uniform spatial distribution of individual CNTs and degree of alignment.These influencing factors and preparation of high performance polymer/CNTs composites were described in this review.Moreover,both the current challenge and the future development towards the field of polymer/CNTs electrical conductive composites were also discussed in this article.
