Abstract:A straight forward approach to increase proton conductivity at relatively dry conditions is to increase the number of sulfonic acid groups in the polymer. Although various PFSAs of significantly lower EW can be prepared, the limitation of this approach is that the polymer and membrane properties are also affected, with membranes showing increased water uptake and dimensional swelling. Our approach has been to develop a series of approaches for the cross-linking of PFSAs in order to improve membrane mechanical properties and reduce membrane swelling in the presence of water. Novel side-chain component multifunctional monomers have been developed that are cross-linkable after membrane fabrication. The result of this approach is that a suite of polymers have been synthesized that, after membrane casting and cross linking show excellent proton conductivity, even under conditions of elevated temperature and <50% RH.

Abstract:Perflurosulfonated ionomers membranes with different ionic-exchange capacity were successfully fabricated via melt-extruding and casting of their -SO2F precursors. A systematical investigation of the thermal stability, crystallinity, and rheological properties of the precursors was performed to secure their optimized processing conditions. The tensile properties of acid-form membranes are found to increase with base-hydrolysis time, where a tensile strength of 38.2 MPa is readily obtained after 24 h's base-hydrolysis. The content of -SO2F or -SO3H containing side-chains plays an important role in the thermal stability, rheological, and mechanical properties of the precursor or the acid-form membranes. The strong ionic interactions, attributed to the -SO3H groups, lead to decreased crystallinity and tensile strength for different IEC membranes. The acid-form membranes exhibit good proton conductivity and low methanol crossover in comparison with reference Nafion membrane. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Abstract:A novel cross-linked fluorinated poly (aryl ether oxadiazole) s having diallyl methylimidazole groups (FPAEO-DA-x) membranes were prepared via copolymerization, bromination, solution casting and hydroxide exchanging using a thermal cross-linking method. The membrane materials synthesized via copolymerization of 2,5-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (FPOx) and diallyl bisphenol A (DABPA), bromination of the allyl and imidazolidation with N-methylimidazole (NMI). The anion exchange membranes (FPAEO-DA-x) were obtained by solution casting method, followed by hydroxide exchanging in sodium hydroxide solution and cross-linked by using the thermal cross-linking method. The chemical structures and properties of the cross-linked FPAEO-DA-x membranes (CFPAEO-DA-x) were studied. The highest ionic conductivity of the CFPAEO-DA-x membrane was achieved at 1.94 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 20 degrees C. Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:The influence of the type of crosslinking agent for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (glutaraldehyde or epichlorohydrin) on the structure, morphology, thermal stability, and electrochemical properties of composite membranes based on the domestic perfluorinated sulfonic acid copolymer LSC, an analog of Nafion®, has been studied. The introduction of hydrophilic PVA has led to an increase in the moisture content of the membranes, which, taking into account the structural features, affects the proton conductivity. The presence of up to 5 wt % of cross-linked PVA in the composite membrane has not significantly changed the initial structure of LSC. The degree of crystallinity of the composite membranes upon the introduction of PVA has been slightly increased as compared to the original LSC membrane. With an increase in the amount of PVA in the composite, a domain surface morphology has appeared, its roughness being clearly increased. The increase in the PVA content in the LSC-PVA-GA samples has led to a noticeable increase in the temperature of thermal decomposition of sulfonic acid groups, while it has remained almost unchanged for the LSC-PVA-ECH samples.

Morphology and Properties of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer/Perfluorocarboxylic Acid Polymer Blend Membranes

Abstract:A melt‐extruded method has been used to prepare blend membranes of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer (PFSA) and Perfluorocarboxylic Acid Polymer (PFCA) with different combination ratios. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) and X‐ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses have showed that the chemical structure and crystallization behaviour of both polymers remained unchanged in the blend membrane, and the crystallinity has been increased for the blend membrane with a higher weight fraction of PFCA. According to the results obtained from Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), PFSA and PFCA polymers are well compatible, forming mixed aggregates containing both sulphonyl and carboxyl ions. Surprisingly, a membrane containing a 50:50 ratio of PFSA/PFCA has showed microphase separation, and it possesses the smallest ionic cluster size among all the blend membranes prepared, as illustrated by the Small Angle X‐ Ray Scattering (SAXS) analysis. In addition, when the PFCA content was increased, the ion exchange capacity (IEC) for blend membranes remained the same, while their water uptake and proton conductivity have decreased rapidly. Compared with the PFSA/PFCA two‐layered membrane, this PFSA/blend/PFCA membrane not only maintained respectable electrolysis property, also exhibited significantly higher peel strength, especially after the hydrolization process; plus, it has showed excellent resistance to the peeling damage under the operational conditions of chlor‐alkali electrolytic cells. Insight into the Structural Construction of a Perfluorosulfonic Acid Membrane Derived from a Polymeric Dispersion

Abstract:The effects of the nature of the solvent on the morphology of perfluorosulfonate ionomers in dispersions and the microstructures of the corresponding formed membranes are investigated. The subsequent electrochemical performances of the formed proton exchange membranes are also studied in detail. It is found that the diameters of the Nafion molecular aggregates in variable solutions decrease with an increase in the solvent dielectric constant (epsilon) and a decrease in the gap of the solubility parameters (delta) between the resin and the solvent. The micromorphology of Nafion is further examined by means of transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and X-ray diffraction. It is found that the membrane cast from a Nafion-2-propanol/water dispersion with E value of 4238 and a delta gap of 0.01 (cal cm(-3))(1/2) has a better ion cluster arrangement, smaller ion cluster size (approximately 13 angstrom), and higher crystallinity (16.7%) than the other samples. The electrochemical properties of the formed membranes are further investigated as a function of temperature, relative humidity, and the solubility parameter of the applied solvents. The results demonstrate that the electrochemical performance is strongly influenced by the solvent-induced microstructure of the backbone and the ionic clusters in the perfluorosulfonic acid membrane. Covalently Cross-Linked Perfluorosulfonated Membranes with Polysiloxane Framework

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with low methanol permeability are constructed by incorporating Nafion into a covalently cross-linked network composed of 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) by ionical cross-linking. The robust framework is full of covalently bonded polysiloxane. The association of Nafion with the cross-linked polysiloxane network results from the ionic interaction between the sulfonic acid groups on Nafion and the amine groups next to polysiloxane. Evidence of the interaction is the shift of the XPS spectra in the S 2p region and the -SO3 stretching band at 1057.8 cm(-1) in ATR/FTIR which induced a change of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation. The polysiloxane network contributed to the increase in bound water degree, higher proton conductivity at temperatures higher than 70 degrees C, and greatly decreased methanol permeability. The increasing polysiloxane concentration reduces the methanol permeability to 10(-8) cm(2)/s. With a polysiloxane concentration of 15% MG(4), at 30 degrees C, the composite membrane showed both good proton conductivity (i.e., sigma = 3.4 x 10(-2) S/cm) and ultralow methanol permeability (i.e., P = 1.1 x 10(-8) cm(2)/s). The composite performed better than Nafion-117 (sigma = 4.5 x 10(-2) S/cm and P = 2.2 x 10(-6) cm(2)/s) under the same conditions.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have desirable properties such as high porosity, low mass density, excellent heat resistance and regulatable structure, making them an ideal candidate for membrane material. Traditional methods for preparing covalent organic framework composite membranes, such as interfacial polymerization, vacuum filtration, and covalent organic framework abrasive coating. Stand-alone COF membranes produced by the above methods usually suffer from problems such as poor mechanical properties. Here, we fabricated high performance COF composite membranes by modified casting-precipitation-evaporation method. The designed composite membranes consisted of the ionic COF (iCOF) selective layer and the support layer are applied in dye/ salt separation. The high permeability (- 68 L h-1 m- 2 bar- 1), high dyes rejection (97% for Rose Bengal), and low salts rejection (- 2.86% for NaCl) are achieved by the iCOF functional layer. The as-prepared composite membranes have a hydrophilic and highly smooth surface, making them have good anti-fouling performance. In addition, the rigid pore structure of iCOF selective layer endows the composite membranes with excellent stability, the composite membranes maintain original structure under high pressure (6 bar) and ultrasonic treatment (16 kHz for 60 min). This work may open up a novel path to fabricate iCOF composite membranes, which exhibit great potential in dye/salt separation.

Abstract:The composite FO membrane was prepared through interfacial polymerization withm-xylylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride supported by PSf membrane.In this paper,the studies were focused on preparation and characterization of the FO composite membrane.The optimized parameters forcomposite FO membrane were 16%PSf,6%PVP,60 s evaporation time,40 ℃ water bath and 0.5%m-XDA,0.05% TMC,120 s reaction time.When deionized water is served as feed solution and 1 mol/L NaCl as draw solution,thewater flux of the FO composite membrane can reach to 17.5 L/(m2 . h ) and the solute reverses diffusion flux is 1.7 mol/(m2 .h),the membrane rejection of NaCl is about 90%.In the HA simulated solution,the water flux of composite FO membranewas decreased.After a further contrast of pH=5.5 and pH=8.0,a fact was con-firmed that lower pH value accompanies with more severe pollution.Studieson chlorine resistance of the com-posite FO membrane was shown that the chlorine resistance capacity of the composite FO membrane was up to 2 000 ppmh.

Abstract:Perfluorinated sulfonic acid ionomer/poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PFSA/PVP) fibrous membranes with varying compositions were prepared by electrospinning. The morphology, physicochemical structure and water stability of these membranes were investigated by SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The crosslinking agent 4,4′-diazostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid disodium salt (DAS) was added to the spinning solutions, and its effect on electrospinning behavior and PFSA/PVP membrane morphology was investigated. Thermal annealing of the DAS-containing PFSA/PVP fibrous membranes resulted in improved water stability due to PVP crosslinking. The adsorption properties of the nanofiber membranes were measured by the ability to remove Cu2+ and Ca2+ ions from water. Nanofiber membranes with higher surface area provide more exposed functional groups and thus better ion removal capability. These functional PFSA/PVP nanofiber membranes show applicability in water treatment and may find potential applications in sensors and drug delivery or as components of the catalytic layer of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

Herein, COF-LZU1 composite membranes were prepared by a stoichiometric spraying layer-by-layer self-assembly method for the first time. Abstract:Perfluorinated sulfonyl fluoride (PFSF) resin, the precursor of perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer is successfully dissolved in perfluorinated solvents, and its hydrophobic nature is utilized to resolve the difficulty of impregnating hydrophilic PFSA solution into hydrophobic porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). The composite membrane fabricated through such simple but effective method is well impregnated, leading to better ionic conductivity and lower gas permeability. The fuel cell constructed with PFSF solution based membranes shows superior performance as compared to that of its aqueous PFSA solution based counterpart, which is comparable to that of commercial Nafion® 211.

Abstract:Copolymeric perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers consisting of both short and long side chain segments (SLSC PFSA) were designed and successfully synthesized. To further enhance the performance of such new ionomers based membranes, SLSC PFSA/PTFE composite membranes were fabricated. On one hand, the membranes kept such advantages of short side chain (SSC) PFSA membranes as high IEC, high crystallinity, and moreover excellent thermal and chemical stability. On the other hand, the long-side chain will affect the membrane microstructures, such as ion cluster size, density, and distribution, thus endowing the new membranes unique and excellent performances.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer membranes have enabled a variety of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as fuel cells and flow batteries and material conversion devices such as electrolyzers to produce hydrogen and chlorine. For decades, a small group of simple copolymers were relied on in these applications. The practical limits for conductivity through lower equivalent weight are being approached for these polymers. Recently, the community has recognized the need for new PFSA ionomers with properties tailored to the specific needs of each application. An emerging area of importance is the manipulation of the diffusion properties of these polymers. For example, fuel cell membranes need to maintain good barrier properties as thicknesses are reduced, while ionomers with increased oxygen diffusion rates are sought for fuel cell electrodes. In recent years, the class of PFSA ionomers has expanded to include new side chain structures, new comonomers, and even hydrocarbon hybrid structures.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing polyimide (FPI) with hydroxyl groups is synthesized from 4,4′-(hexafluoro isopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 2,2-bis (3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (6FAP), and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) via high temperature polycondensation. Thereafter, alkynyl groups are introduced into FPI. During the preparation of the composite membrane, alkynyl groups on FPI react with azido methyl of 4,4′-bis(azido methyl) biphenyl via click chemistry and form semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) structure within the composite membranes. The mechanical properties, thermal behavior, water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, oxidative stability, as well as the performance in single cell operation are investigated. Compared to pure perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer membrane, the composite membranes based on semi-IPN of FPI and PFSA exhibit improved mechanical properties, excellent thermal and dimensional stabilities, and suitable proton conductivity. The tensile strength of the composite membranes ranges from 28.0 to 67.0MPa. With increasing FPI content in the membranes, the dimensional stability of the composite membranes increases. The composite membranes have the proton conductivity from 4.3×10−2 S·cm−1 to 1.0×10−1 S·cm−1 at 100°C and also have good performances as proton exchange membrane (PEM) in single cell at 80°C.

Abstract:Perfluorinated ionomers (S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH) and their anion exchange membranes (AEMs) were successfully synthesized from short side-chain perfluorosulfonamide polymer for the first time. S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH ionomers well dissolved in many solvents, especially in low-boiling point solvents and formed a transparent solution. The wet membrane of S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH displayed a well defined nano-phase separated structure with the ionic cluster dimension of 4–5nm. S-PFSO2NH-GCI-OH membrane exhibited good hydroxide conductivity of 102mScm−1 at 80°C and excellent dimensional stability in water. Moreover, the membrane maintained 86.1% hydroxide conductivity and 87.5% IEC value after immersion in 8M KOH at 80°C over fifteen days. Alkaline membrane fuel cell using the perfluorinated ionomer as catalyst binder on the perfluorinated membrane exhibits power density of 138mWcm−2. This new synthetic strategy may be useful in designing more perfluorinated AEMs electrochemical devices with high comprehensive performance.

Abstract:The commercial fluorocarbon surfactant (FCS) DuPont (TM) Zonyl 321 fluorinated cationic surfactants, was employed to modify both flat-sheet and hollow-fiber poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) porous membranes. The variation of morphology, wettability, and hydrophilicity durability to acid and alkali as well as the filtration performance of both membranes were investigated. Such superhydrophilic membranes showed better wetting stability and higher resistance to acid and alkali solutions. Moreover, both membranes exhibited good filtration performance.
