Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have become a worldwide hot topic due to their fascinating properties, including high carrier mobility, tunable bandgap, ultra-broadband optical absorption and response. The versatility of 2D materials enable it hold great potential to achieve high performance Terahertz (THz) optoelectronic devices. However, the THz radiation, range from infrared to microwave, known as the THz gap, much less investigated than that of other electromagnetic wave. Motivated by this lack of knowledge, we reviewed the recent advances of research into 2D materials based THz optoelectronic devices. Firstly, we introduced the background and motivation of this review. Then, the suitable 2D material candidates are exhibited, followed by a comprehensive review of their applications in THz generation devices, modulator, THz shielding, and photodetectors. Finally, the challenges and further development directions are concluded. We believe that some milestone investigations of 2D materials based THz optoelectronic devices will emerge soon, which will bring about great industrial revelations in 2D materials-based nanodevice commercialization.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy (TES) has emerged as a highly effective and versatile technique for investigating the photoelectric properties of diverse materials and nonlinear physical processes in the past few decades. Concurrently, research on two-dimensional (2D) materials has experienced substantial growth due to their atomically thin structures, exceptional mechanical and optoelectronic properties, and the potential for applications in flexible electronics, sensing, and nanoelectronics. Specifically, these materials offer advantages such as tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, wideband optical absorption, and relatively short carrier lifetime. By applying TES to investigate the 2D materials, their interfaces and heterostructures, rich information about the interplay among photons, charges, phonons and spins can be unfolded, which provides fundamental understanding for future applications. Thus it is timely to review the nonlinear processes underlying THz emission in 2D materials including optical rectification, photon-drag, high-order harmonic generation and spin-to-charge conversion, showcasing the rich diversity of the TES employed to unravel the complex nature of these materials. Typical applications based on THz emissions, such as THz lasers, ultrafast imaging and biosensors, are also discussed. Step further, we analyzed the unique advantages of spintronic terahertz emitters and the future technological advancements in the development of new THz generation mechanisms leading to advanced THz sources characterized by wide bandwidth, high power and integration, suitable for industrial and commercial applications. The continuous advancement and integration of TES with the study of 2D materials and heterostructures promise to revolutionize research in different areas, including basic materials physics, novel optoelectronic devices, and chips for post-Moore's era.

Abstract:Multidimensional spectroscopy in the visible and infrared spectral ranges has become a powerful technique to retrieve dynamic correlations and couplings in wide-ranging systems by utilizing multiple correlated light-matter interactions. Its extension to the terahertz (THz) regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, where rich material degrees of freedom reside, however, has been progressing slowly. This chapter reviews some of the THz-frequency two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy techniques and experimental results realized in recent years. Examples include gas molecule rotations, spin precessions in magnetic systems, and liquid molecular dynamics studied by 2D THz or hybrid 2D THz-Raman spectroscopy techniques. The methodology shows promising applications to different THz-frequency degrees of freedom in various chemical systems and processes.

Abstract:Inspired by the innovations in photonics and nanotechnology, the remarkable properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have renewed interest for the development of terahertz (THz) photodetectors. The versatility of these materials enables ultrafast and ultrasensitive photodetection of THz radiation at room temperature. The atomically thin characteristic together with van der Waals interactions among the layers make it easy to scaling down and integrate with other 2D materials based devices, as well as silicon chips. Efforts have increased fast in the past decade in developing proof-of-concept and the further prospective THz photodetectors based on 2D materials. Here, the recent progress on the exploring of THz photodetectors based on 2D materials is reviewed. We summarized the THz photodetectors under different physical mechanism and introduced the state-of-the-art THz photodetectors based on various promising 2D materials, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), black phosphorus (BP) and topological insulators (TIs). A brief discussion on the remaining challenges and a perspective of the 2D materials based THz photodetectors are also given.
Multidimensional Terahertz Probes of Quantum Materials

Abstract:Multidimensional spectroscopy has a long history originating from nuclear magnetic resonance, and has now found widespread application at infrared and optical frequencies as well. However, the energy scales of traditional multidimensional probes have been ill-suited for studying quantum materials. Recent technological advancements have now enabled extension of these multidimensional techniques to the terahertz frequency range, in which collective excitations of quantum materials are typically found. This Perspective introduces the technique of two-dimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS) and the unique physics of quantum materials revealed by 2DTS spectra, accompanied by a selection of the rapidly expanding experimental and theoretical literature. While 2DTS has so far been primarily applied to quantum materials at equilibrium, we provide an outlook for its application towards understanding their dynamical non-equilibrium states and beyond.

Abstract:<p>Terahertz waves spanning over the 0.1 to 10 THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum have attracted significant attention owing to a variety of potential applications such as short‐range high‐speed data transmission, noninvasive screening and detection, materials characterization, spectroscopy, etc. This has resulted in massive strides in the development of essential system components such as broadband terahertz sources, detector arrays with high responsivity, as well as modulators. In parallel to this, spurred by the isolation of graphene in 2004, a tremendous interest in 2D systems has led to the rapid exploration and development of a library of atomically thin materials. These can exhibit a myriad of electrical and optical functionalities stemming from semiconducting, insulating, semi‐metallic, or superconducting behavior. In this context, since the early 2010s, 2D materials have been actively explored for active control of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. This paper aims to provide a concise overview of the pioneering efforts as well as the latest progress in these two overlapping research areas. In particular, the discussion is focused on the application of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides in optically and electrically actuated terahertz amplitude and phase modulators. Furthermore, it provides an outlook on the technological prospects and challenges in these devices.</p>

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) technology has attracted great attention in the past few decades for its unique applications in various fields, including spectroscopy, noninvasive detection, wireless communications, and imaging. In parallel to this, the practical, fast, and broadband modulation of THz waves is becoming indispensable. Two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit unusual optical and electrical properties, which has prompted tremendous interest and significant advances in THz modulation. This review provides the recent progress in 2D materials-based THz modulators, outlining the operating principles, including all-optical, electro-optic, magneto-optic, and other exotic mechanisms. We focus on the recent advances in THz modulation by the designed photonic structures, such as heterostructure, metamaterial, capacitor, optical cavity, and waveguide integration. Lastly, we discussed the challenges and opportunities for 2D materials-based THz modulators and presented our prospects for the future development.

Abstract:Accurately illustrating the photocarrier dynamics and photoelectrical properties of two dimensional (2D) materials is crucial in the development of 2D material-based optoelectronic devices. Considering this requirement, terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has emerged as a befitting characterization tool to provide deep insights into the carrier dynamics and measurements of the electrical/photoelectrical conductivity of 2D materials. THz spectroscopic measurements would provide information of transient behaviors of carriers with high accuracy in a nondestructive and noncontact manner. In this article, we present a comprehensive review on recent research efforts on investigations of 2D materials of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) using THz spectroscopy. A brief introduction of THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy (OPTP) is provided. The characterization of the electron transport of graphene at equilibrium state and transient behavior at non-equilibrium state is reviewed. We also review the characterizations of TMDs including MoS2 and WSe2. Finally, we conclude the recent reports and give a prospect on how THz characterizations would guide the design and optimization of 2D material-based optoelectronic devices.
Prospects for the application of two-dimensional materials to terahertz-band communications

Abstract:In this paper, we review some of the key properties of emergent two-dimensional (2D) materials that make them potentially attractive for application in the hardware components needed to enable future communications in the terahertz (THz) band. Graphene is a material that has attracted enormous interest in recent years, due to its high electrical and thermal conductivities, and its capacity to exhibit pronounced and controlled plasmonic effects. Here we describe several schemes that seek to exploit these characteristics for the sourcing, manipulating, and detection of THz signals. Another class of 2D materials that are also promising for use in this area are the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). These include materials such as MoS2 and WS2, which, like graphene, exhibit a multi-valley conduction band structure. In contrast to graphene, however, the valleys of TMDs are highly asymmetric, a characteristic that may allow the realization of novel high-frequency sources capable of THz operation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) materials have attracted enormous interests owing to their unique band structures as well as extraordinary electronic and optical properties. Atomic thickness combined with the weak van der Waals interaction between layers provides exceptional advantages in wafer-scale production and integration. The versatility of 2D materials makes it possible to achieve ultra-fast and ultra-sensitive terahertz (THz) detection at room temperature. Therefore, since graphene was discovered in 2004, 2D material-based THz detectors have rapidly become a hot research topic. Here, a review of the latest progress in THz detection based on the emerging 2D materials is presented. Firstly, the excellent optoelectronic properties of 2D materials, including graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and black phosphorus (BP), are introduced. Then, an insight into different photodetection mechanisms as well as the key factors for the comparison between different detectors are introduced. State-of-art photodetectors classified by different detection mechanisms are summarized systematically. Finally, the remaining challenge and perspective of 2D material-based THz detectors are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Terahertz spectroscopy has become a powerful tool in physical, chemical and biological researches. Traditional terahertz spectroscopic techniques can be divided into six categories, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, time-domain spectroscopy, directly tuning frequency, heterodyne mixing/photomixing, dispersive optics and narrowband filter array. In this work, we will first give an overview on the principle, performance characteristics and applications of these techniques. It will be concluded that they have certain limitations in terms of applicability, measurement speed, etc., especially for the investigation of terahertz radiation sources, where there is a lack of convenient, compact and low-cost direct measurement and characterization method of the emission spectrum. Then we will envisage and discuss a concept of computational terahertz spectrometer.
Terahertz Spectroscopy of Two-Dimensional Subwavelength Plasmonic Structures

Abstract:The fascinating properties of plasmonic structures have had significant impact on the development of next generation ultracompact photonic and optoelectronic components. We study two-dimensional plasmonic structures functioning at terahertz frequencies. Resonant terahertz response due to surface plasmons and dipole localized surface plasmons were investigated by the state-of-the-art terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) using both transmission and reflection configurations. Extraordinary terahertz transmission was demonstrated through the subwavelength metallic hole arrays made from good conducting metals as well as poor metals. Metallic arrays made from Pb, generally a poor metal, and having optically thin thicknesses less than one-third of a skin depth also contributed in enhanced THz transmission. A direct transition of a surface plasmon resonance from a photonic crystal minimum was observed in a photo-doped semiconductor array. Electrical controls of the surface plasmon resonances by hybridization of the Schottky diode between the metallic grating and the semiconductor substrate are investigated as a function of the applied reverse bias. In addition, we have demonstrated photo-induced creation and annihilation of surface plasmons with appropriate semiconductors at room temperature. According to the Fano model, the transmission properties are characterized by two essential contributions: resonant excitation of surface plasmons and nonresonant direct transmission. Such plasmonic structures may find fascinating applications in terahertz imaging, biomedical sensing, subwavelength terahertz spectroscopy, tunable filters, and integrated terahertz devices.
