Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted intensive attention due to their low cost, environmental friendliness and high safety. However, exploring suitable cathode materials and a deep understanding of their energy storage mechanisms remain a daunting challenge. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) nest-like V6O13 structure is grown on carbon cloth (CC) as a free-standing ZIB cathode. Such interconnected V6O13 nanoneedles forming a 3D nest structure provide a large accessible surface area to the electrolyte and rapid channels for Zn2+ diffusion, and V6O13 with a V5+-rich state allows for more possibilities of multielectron reaction upon Zn (de)intercalation. As a result, an aqueous ZIB based on the V6O13/CC cathode and low-cost ZnSO4 electrolyte shows an ultrahigh capacity of 520 mA h g(-1) (at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1)), desirable rate capability and cycle life (showing a stable capacity of 335 mA h g(-1) over 1000 cycles). Moreover, the Zn2+ storage mechanism is deeply investigated based on experimental data and density functional theory simulation, and flexible solid-state ZIBs are established based on such a V6O13/CC cathode to reveal its high functional flexibility and excellent electrochemical performance, showing great potential applications in high-performance and safe electronic devices.
Tailor-made Overstable 3D Carbon Superstructures Towards Efficient Zinc-Ion Storage

Abstract:Designing carbon materials with ideal stable hierarchical porous structures and flexible functional properties for efficient and sustainable Zn2+ ion storage still faces great challenges. Herein, the three-dimensional carbon superstructures with spherical nanoflower-like structures were tailor-made by the self-assembly strategy. Specifically, organic polymer units (i.e. organic motifs) form by tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone (TBQ) and 2,6-diamino anthraquinone (DAQ) via a noble-metal-free catalyzed coupling reaction. Subsequently, the organic motifs assemble into spherical nanoflower-like superstructures induced by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and aromatic π-π stacking interactions. Well-designed carbon superstructures can provide a stable backbone that effectively blocks structural stacking and collapse. Meanwhile, the hierarchical porous structures in 3D carbon superstructures provide continuous charge transport pathways to greatly shorten the ion diffusion distance, and as a result, the carbon superstructures-based zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) provide a capacity of 245 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g, a high energy density of 152 Wh/kg and an ultra-long life of 300,000 cycles at 20 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance is also attributed to the corresponding charge storage mechanism, i.e., the alternate binding of Zn2+/CF3SO3− ions. Besides, the high-level N/O motifs improve the surface properties of the carbon superstructures and reduce the ion migration barriers for more efficient charge storage. This paper provides insights into the design of advanced carbon-based cathodes and presents a fundamental understanding of their charge storage mechanisms.
Kinetics-driven design of 3D VN/MXene composite structure for superior zinc storage and charge transfer

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) employing zinc as the anode have recently inspired widespread attention. However, crackly cathode and inefficient transfer kinetics upon the Zn2+ shuttle make the storage capacity and service life far from satisfactory to meet the practical demand. Herein, a 3D VN/MXene composite structure is elaborately designed as the electrode by uniformly encapsulating VN microspheres in MXene nanosheets, which prevents the microsphere over aggregation to ensure full exposure of reactive sites, and serves as a conductive buffer for inhibiting the structure damage to realize fast transfer kinetics. VN/MXene anode exhibits high reversible capacity (521 mAh g−1 vs. 324 mAh g−1) at 0.5 A g−1 and superior rate performance, remarkably higher than that of pure VN electrode. The capacity still maintains 146.3 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 coupled with high stability up to 2200 cycles. Moreover, the energy storage mechanism of highly reversible phase transition of VN upon Zn2+/H+ co-insertion/extraction is elucidated by in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The structural merits of 3D VN/MXene composite work with fast and reversible Zn2+ (de)intercalation toward superior zinc storage and charge transfer. Such design strategy lights up a brilliant insight into the development of cathode materials for ZIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) appear to be a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage system because of the abundance and inherent safety of the zinc negative electrode. Despite these benefits, huge polarization caused by the intercalation of multivalent charge carrier Zn2+ into the cathodic hosts remains a long-standing challenge impeding the development of high-performance ZIBs. Herein, we demonstrate the viability of the V2O5 nanorods constructed 3D porous architectures (3D-NRAs-V2O5) as cathode for ZIBs. Notably, the 3D-NRAs-V2O5 can be scaled up to kilo-gram production based on a simple sol-gel reaction followed by an annealing process. The synergic contributions from the 3D porous framework and layered structures of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5 lead a more facile Zn2+ ions (de)intercalation storage process. Consequently, it offers high reversible capacity of 336 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 50 mA g−1 and exhibits excellent long-term cyclic stability with a capacity retention of 85% over 5000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. Furthermore, the use of various ex-situ characterization techniques and first-principles calculations has successfully unravelled the Zn2+ ions storage mechanism of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5. Besides the excellent electrochemical performance of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5, it can also be easily scaled up based on the simple synthetic protocol, which shows great potential to be practically used for the next-generation large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of the large-scale storage equipment, more scholars are involved in the research of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to their cost-effectiveness, good safety and environment-friendly. Herein, we demonstrate a three-dimensional (3D) bird nest-like VO2/MXene heterojunction using a facile ultrasonication method combined with freeze-drying. The particular heterostructure of cathode material not only effectively suppresses the volume changes of electrodes, but also prominently improves the kinetics of active materials upon cycling, thus results in remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance. It delivers a specific capacity of 445 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and exhibits unexceptionable high-rate capacities of 244.5 and 225.0 mAh g−1 at 20.0 (over 2600 cycles) and 30.0 (over 4000 cycles) A g−1, respectively. Moreover, a high specific capacity of 247.2 mAh g−1 is achieved at 5.0 A g−1 at −20 °C, and almost no capacity loss is observed even after 2500 cycles. Moreover, the further research on ex-situ XPS and XRD measurements are carried out for VO2/MXene material in hope of better understanding its Zn2+ storage mechanism. The proposed interfacial engineering approach combining metal oxides and MXene in this work opens up a novel way for cathode in AZIBs.

Abstract:Herein, the promising properties of open‐structured NaV3O8 as a cathode material for Zn‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are investigated. First‐principles calculations predict the insertion of Zn2+ (0.74 Å) in NaV3O8 with an interlayer distance of ≈7 Å, enabling delivery of a high discharge capacity of 353 mAh g−1 at 70 mA g−1 (0.2 C) for 300 cycles in the operating window of 0.3−1.5 V in 1 m Zn(CF3SO3)2 aqueous solution. Operando synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, and first‐principles calculations validate the insertion of Zn2+ into the NaV3O8 structure within the operation range. Moreover, operando synchrotron X‐ray diffraction and operando Raman spectroscopy reveal the formation of layered zinc hydroxytriflate (Zn5(OH)8(CF3SO3)2∙xH2O) as a side reaction below 0.8 V on discharge (reduction) and its dissolution into the electrolyte above 0.8 V on charge (oxidation). The formation of the Zn hydroxytriflate interfacial layer increases the charge‐transfer activation energy from 15.5 to 48 kJ mol−1, leading to kinetics fade below 0.8 V. The findings reveal the charge‐storage mechanism for NaV3O8, which may also be applicable to other vanadate cathodes, providing new insights for the investigation and design of ZIBs.

Abstract:A new "dual‐ion‐in‐sequence" intercalation strategy, successfully materialized by thermal quenching, is demonstrated for the reconstruction structure of vanadium oxides. Interestingly, the steady transformation in Zn2+ storage mechanism, from the common solid‐state ion diffusion kinetics to an intercalation pseudocapacitance, and the formation defects lead to the much‐raised diffusion kinetics and enhanced electric conductivity. Vanadium oxides with fast and stable Zn2+ storage are of great significance to the development of high‐performance aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs), and yet they commonly suffer from structural instability and sluggish diffusion kinetics. Herein, a new "dual‐ion‐in‐sequence" intercalation strategy based on quenching is proposed to address these issues. Interestingly, it is found that the Zn2+ storage mechanism evolves from the common solid‐state ion diffusion kinetic into an intercalation pseudocapacitance as a result of the enlarged interlayer spacing of V2O5. Together with the expanded interlayer spacing arising from the "dual‐ion‐in‐sequence" intercalation, oxygen defects are simultaneously generated at the sub‐surface of the reconstructed Li@MnVO materials. Benefitting from the improved ionic diffusivity, intercalation pseudocapacitance, and fast charge transferability, full cell based on Li@MnVO cathode shows impressive rate capability and excellent cycling stability of 5000 cycles with a high energy density of 253 Wh kg‐1 at 10 A g‐1. More importantly, the capacity can maintain at 125 mAh g‐1 at 4 A g‐1 even under a raised mass loading of 10 mg cm‐2. The proposed "dual‐ion‐in‐sequence" intercalation strategy of manipulating V2O5 structure at atomic scales is a viable pathway for the high‐performance layered metal oxides, not only for ZIBs but also for other energy storage systems.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) with high safety and low-cost are highly desirable for grid-scale energy storage, yet the energy storage mechanisms in the current cathode materials are still complicated and unclear. Hence, several sodium vanadates with NaV3O8-type layered structure (e.g., Na5V12O32 and HNaV6O16 center dot 4H(2)O) and beta-Na0.33V2O5-type tunneled structure (e.g., Na0.76V6O15) are constructed and the storage/release behaviors of Zn2+ ions are deeply investigated in these two typical structures. It should be mentioned that the 2D layered Na5V12O32 and HNaV6O16 center dot 4H(2)O with more effective path for Zn2+ diffusion exhibit higher ion diffusion coefficients than that of tunneled Na0.76V6O15. As a result, Na5V12O32 delivers higher capacity than that of Na0.76V6O15, and a long-term cyclic performance up to 2000 cycles at 4.0 A g(-1) in spite of its capacity fading. This work provides a new perspective of Zn2+ storage mechanism in aqueous ZIB systems.

Abstract:As candidates of the next generation batteries, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have drawn widespread attention owing to the advantages of environmental friendliness, low cost and ultrahigh theoretical capacity. In order to obtain superior zinc ions (Zn2+) storage ability, the cathode materials with eminent electrochemical property are placed great expectations. Herein, the hierarchical 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx microsphere is prepared by a simple spray drying process. In the heterostructure, the amorphous V2O5 not only endows abundant active sites for Zn2+ storage but also effectively alleviates Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets restacking. Meanwhile, the presence of conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene framework significantly enhances the conductivity and reaction kinetics of the electrode material. As a result, the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx exhibits an impressive Zn2+ storage ability, including the high reversible capacity (604 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), the superior rate performance and the splendid cycling stability. Furthermore, the relevant mechanism is illustrated via various characterizations. Moreover, the as-fabricated pouch ZIBs based on the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx displays a potential practical application prospect as flexible energy storage devices. Hence, this work may provide an inspiration for the rational design of high performance ZIBs cathode materials.

Anodic Oxidation Strategy toward Structure-Optimized V2O3 Cathode via Electrolyte Regulation for Zn-Ion Storage.

Abstract:The lack of suitable cathodes is one of the key reasons that impede the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Because of the inherently unsuitable structure and inferior physicochemical properties, the low valent V2O3 as Zn2+ host could not be effectively discharged. Herein, we demonstrate that V2O3 (theoretical capacity up to 715 mAh g-1) can be utilized as a high-performance cathode material by in situ anodic oxidation strategy. Through simultaneously regulating the concentration of the electrolyte and the morphology of the V2O3 sample, the ultra-efficient anodic oxidation process of V2O3 cathode was achieved within the first charging and the mechanism was also schematically investigated. As expected, the V2O3 cathode with a hierarchical microcuboid structure achieved nearly 2 electrons transfer process enabling high discharging capacity of 625 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 (corresponding to a high energy density of 406 Wh kg-1), and cycling stability (100% capacity retention after 10000 cycles). This work not only sheds light on the phase transition process of low valent V2O3 but also exploits a method toward design of advanced cathode materials.
Quicker and More Zn 2+ Storage Predominantly from the Interface

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries are highly desirable for large‐scale energy storage because of their low cost and high‐level safety. However, achieving high energy and high power densities simultaneously is challenging. Herein, a VOx sub‐nanometer cluster/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) cathode material composed of interfacial VOC bonds is artificially constructed. Therein, a new mechanism is revealed, where Zn2+ ions are predominantly stored at the interface between VOx and rGO, which causes anomalous valence changes compared to conventional mechanisms and exploits the storage ability of non‐energy‐storing active yet highly conductive rGO. Further, this interface‐dominated storage triggers decoupled transport of electrons/Zn2+ ions, and the reversible destruction/reconstruction allows the interface to store more ions than the bulk. Finally, an ultrahigh rate capability (174.4 mAh g−1 at 100 A g−1, i.e., capacity retention of 39.4% for a 1000‐fold increase in current density) and a high capacity (443 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, exceeding the theoretical capacities of each interfacial component) are achieved. Such interface‐dominated storage is an exciting way to build high‐energy‐ and high‐power‐density devices.

Abstract:The optimized stress distribution in a hierarchical hollow structure is verified by COMSOL finite element simulation firstly. Guided by this model, uniform hierarchical hollow nanospheres with a size of ≈1 μm are prepared and an amorphous structure is introduced via in situ electrochemical oxidation, enabling high‐rate and stable Zn2+ storage. Compared with lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), aqueous zinc batteries (AZIBs) have received extensive attention due to their safety and cost advantages in recent years. The cathode determines the electrochemical performance of AZIBs to a large extent. Vanadium‐based materials exhibit excellent capacity when used as AZIB cathodes. However, unexpected structural stress is inevitably induced during cycling and high current densities, which can gradually lead to structural deterioration and capacity decay. In fact, the stress/strain distribution in nanomaterials is crucial for electrochemical performance. In this work, the optimized stress distribution of the hierarchical hollow structure is verified by the finite element simulation of COMSOL software firstly. Guided by this model, a simple solvothermal method to synthesize hierarchical hollow vanadium oxide nanospheres (VO‐NSs), consisting of ≈10 nm ultrathin nanosheets and ≈500 nm hollow inner cavities, is employed. And a highly disordered structure is introduced to the VO‐NSs by in situ electrochemical oxidation, which can also weaken the structural stress during Zn2+ insertion and extraction. Benefiting from this unique structure, VO‐NSs exhibit high‐rate and stable Zn2+ storage capability. The strategy of engineering‐driven material design provides new insights into the development of AZIB cathodes.

Previous studies have widely investigated their preparation and storage mechanism, but the intrinsic relationship between the structural design of layered cathode materials and electrochemical performance has not been well established. In this work, based on the first principles calculations and experiments, a crucial strategy of pre-intercalated metal-ions in vanadium oxide interlayer with administrable p-band center (ɛ p) of O is explored to enhance Zn2+ storage. This regulation of the degree of covalent bond and the average charge of O atoms varies the binding energy between Zn2+ and O, thus affecting the intercalation/de-intercalation of Zn2+. The present study demonstrates that ɛ p of O can be used as an important indicator to boost Zn2+ storage, which provides a new concept toward the controlled design and application of layered materials.
Insight into the Critical Role of Oxygen Vacancies and V=O Bonds Length in V2O5 for Advanced Zinc Ion Storage

Abstract:Due to the larger sizes and stronger positive polarity of Zn2+ than dominant univalent ions, Zn2+ sluggish diffusion within V2O5 host electrodes is an essential issue in developing aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) of higher energy densities. Herein, a high-performance V2O5 cathode was developed through subtly synthesizing and tuning V2O5 with oxygen vacancies-enriched and elongated apical V=O1 bond by altering the gradient concentration of hydrazine hydrate in the gas-solid reaction system. This strategy can enhance both intrinsic and extrinsic conductivity to a large extent. The electrochemical testing demonstrated the oxygen vacancies-enriched and elongated apical V=O1 bond can not only increase the intrinsic electronic conductivity of V2O5, but also induce additional pseudocapacitance to enhance the Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. We used infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the change in the bond length structure of V2O5. Simultaneously, the long-term cyclability (capacity retention of 76.9 % after 1200 cycles at 4.0 A g-1) and rate capabilities (218 mAh g-1 at 4.0 A g-1) are promoted as well. We believe that our work might shed light on the bond length engineering of V2O5 and provide insights for the reasonable designing of novel cathodes for practical rechargeable ZIBs.
Water molecules and oxygen-vacancy modulation of vanadium pentoxide with fast kinetics toward ultrahigh power density and durable flexible all-solid-state zinc ion battery

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion battery (ZIB) with many virtues such as high safety, cost-effective, and good environmental compatibility is a large-scale energy storage technology with great application potential. Nevertheless, its application is severely hindered by the slow diffusion of zinc ions in desirable cathode materials. Herein, a technique of water-incorporation coupled with oxygen-vacancy modulation is exploited to improve the zinc ions diffusion kinetics in vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) cathode for ZIB. The incorporated water molecules replace lattice oxygen in V 2 O 5 , and function as pillars to expand interlayer distance. So the structural stability can be enhanced, and the zinc ions diffusion kinetics might also be promoted during the repeated intercalation/deintercalation. Meanwhile, the lattice water molecules can effectively enhance conductivity due to the electronic density modulation effect. Consequently, the modulated V 2 O 5 (H-V 2 O 5 ) cathode behaves with superior rate capacity and stable durability, achieving 234 mA h g −1 over 9000 cycles even at 20 A g −1 . Furthermore, a flexible all-solid-state (ASS) ZIB has been constructed, exhibiting an admirable energy density of 196.6 W h kg −1 and impressive power density of 20.4 kW kg −1 as well as excellent long-term lifespan. Importantly, the assembled flexible ASS ZIB would be able to work in a large temperature span (from −20 to 70 °C). Additionally, we also uncover the energy storage mechanism of the H-V 2 O 5 electrode, offering a novel approach for creating high-kinetics cathodes for multivalent ion storage.

Abstract:Given their plentiful reserves, impressive safety features, and economical pricing, aqueous zinc - ion batteries (ZIBs) have positioned themselves as strong competitors to lithium - ion batteries. Yet, the scarcity of available cathode materials poses a challenge to their continued development. In this study, a V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure has been synthesized using a one - pot hydrothermal approach and employed as the cathode material for ZIBs. As evidenced by both experimental and theoretical findings, V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure delivers a rapid electrons and ions diffusion kinetics promoted by the stable interface and strong electronic coupling with significant charge transfer between V2O5 and V6O13, as well as a stable interface achieved by adjusting V - O bond length. Consequently, the optimized V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure cathode of ZIBs demonstrates exceptional capacity (338 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), remarkable cycling stability (92.96 % retained after 1400 cycles at 1 A g-1). Through comprehensive theoretical calculations and ex situ characterization, the kinetic analysis and storage mechanism of Zn2+ are thoroughly investigated, providing a solid theoretical foundation for the advancement of novel V - based cathode materials aimed at enhancing the performance of ZIBs.
A High-Capacity Ammonium Vanadate Cathode for Zinc-Ion Battery

Abstract:Given the advantages of being abundant in resources, environmental benign and highly safe, rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) enter the global spotlight for their potential utilization in large-scale energy storage. Despite their preliminary success, zinc-ion storage that is able to deliver capacity > 400 mAh g-1 remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate the viability of NH4V4O10 (NVO) as high-capacity cathode that breaks through the bottleneck of ZIBs in limited capacity. The first-principles calculations reveal that layered NVO is a good host to provide fast Zn2+ ions diffusion channel along its [010] direction in the interlayer space. On the other hand, to further enhance Zn2+ ion intercalation kinetics and long-term cycling stability, a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like architecture that is self-assembled by NVO nanobelts (3D-NVO) is rationally designed and fabricated through a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. As a result, such 3D-NVO cathode possesses high capacity (485 mAh g-1) and superior long-term cycling performance (3000 times) at 10 A g-1 (~ 50 s to full discharge/charge). Additionally, based on the excellent 3D-NVO cathode, a quasi-solid-state ZIB with capacity of 378 mAh g-1 is developed.
