Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) employing zinc as the anode have recently inspired widespread attention. However, crackly cathode and inefficient transfer kinetics upon the Zn2+ shuttle make the storage capacity and service life far from satisfactory to meet the practical demand. Herein, a 3D VN/MXene composite structure is elaborately designed as the electrode by uniformly encapsulating VN microspheres in MXene nanosheets, which prevents the microsphere over aggregation to ensure full exposure of reactive sites, and serves as a conductive buffer for inhibiting the structure damage to realize fast transfer kinetics. VN/MXene anode exhibits high reversible capacity (521 mAh g−1 vs. 324 mAh g−1) at 0.5 A g−1 and superior rate performance, remarkably higher than that of pure VN electrode. The capacity still maintains 146.3 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 coupled with high stability up to 2200 cycles. Moreover, the energy storage mechanism of highly reversible phase transition of VN upon Zn2+/H+ co-insertion/extraction is elucidated by in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The structural merits of 3D VN/MXene composite work with fast and reversible Zn2+ (de)intercalation toward superior zinc storage and charge transfer. Such design strategy lights up a brilliant insight into the development of cathode materials for ZIBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attracting considerable attention because of their low cost, high safety and abundant anode material resources. However, the major challenge faced by aqueous ZIBs is the lack of stable and high capacity cathode materials due to their complicated reaction mechanism and slow Zn-ion transport kinetics. This study reports a unique 3D ‘flower-like’ zinc cobaltite (ZnCo2O4- x ) with enriched oxygen vacancies as a new cathode material for aqueous ZIBs. Computational calculations reveal that the presence of oxygen vacancies significantly enhances the electronic conductivity and accelerates Zn2+ diffusion by providing enlarged channels. The as-fabricated batteries present an impressive specific capacity of 148.3 mAh g−1 at the current density of 0.05 A g−1, high energy (2.8 Wh kg−1) and power densities (27.2 W kg−1) based on the whole device, which outperform most of the reported aqueous ZIBs. Moreover, a flexible solid-state pouch cell was demonstrated, which delivers an extremely stable capacity under bending states. This work demonstrates that the performance of Zn-ion storage can be effectively enhanced by tailoring the atomic structure of cathode materials, guiding the development of low-cost and eco-friendly energy storage materials.

Abstract:Given their plentiful reserves, impressive safety features, and economical pricing, aqueous zinc - ion batteries (ZIBs) have positioned themselves as strong competitors to lithium - ion batteries. Yet, the scarcity of available cathode materials poses a challenge to their continued development. In this study, a V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure has been synthesized using a one - pot hydrothermal approach and employed as the cathode material for ZIBs. As evidenced by both experimental and theoretical findings, V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure delivers a rapid electrons and ions diffusion kinetics promoted by the stable interface and strong electronic coupling with significant charge transfer between V2O5 and V6O13, as well as a stable interface achieved by adjusting V - O bond length. Consequently, the optimized V2O5/V6O13 heterostructure cathode of ZIBs demonstrates exceptional capacity (338 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), remarkable cycling stability (92.96 % retained after 1400 cycles at 1 A g-1). Through comprehensive theoretical calculations and ex situ characterization, the kinetic analysis and storage mechanism of Zn2+ are thoroughly investigated, providing a solid theoretical foundation for the advancement of novel V - based cathode materials aimed at enhancing the performance of ZIBs.
Persistent zinc-ion storage in mass-produced V2O5 architectures

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) appear to be a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage system because of the abundance and inherent safety of the zinc negative electrode. Despite these benefits, huge polarization caused by the intercalation of multivalent charge carrier Zn2+ into the cathodic hosts remains a long-standing challenge impeding the development of high-performance ZIBs. Herein, we demonstrate the viability of the V2O5 nanorods constructed 3D porous architectures (3D-NRAs-V2O5) as cathode for ZIBs. Notably, the 3D-NRAs-V2O5 can be scaled up to kilo-gram production based on a simple sol-gel reaction followed by an annealing process. The synergic contributions from the 3D porous framework and layered structures of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5 lead a more facile Zn2+ ions (de)intercalation storage process. Consequently, it offers high reversible capacity of 336 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 50 mA g−1 and exhibits excellent long-term cyclic stability with a capacity retention of 85% over 5000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. Furthermore, the use of various ex-situ characterization techniques and first-principles calculations has successfully unravelled the Zn2+ ions storage mechanism of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5. Besides the excellent electrochemical performance of the 3D-NRAs-V2O5, it can also be easily scaled up based on the simple synthetic protocol, which shows great potential to be practically used for the next-generation large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attractive alternatives for large-scale sustainable energy storage devices owing to their high energy density, reliability, environmental friendliness, and safety. However, their practical application is largely impeded by the limited selection of suitable cathodes, which often leads to inadequate cyclic lifespan and unsatisfactory rate capability. Here, a three-dimensional (3D) porous interconnected aerogel comprised of an ultrathin VO2 sheet coated with amorphous carbon is demonstrated as a cathode material for ZIBs. Benefiting from the synergistic merits of favorable ultrathin features of the VO2 sheet and the large accessible surface area of the 3D porous structure, the carbon/VO2 (CVO) composite electrode displays a good electrochemical performance with a high capacity of 388 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1, good rate capability, and very long cycling life (80% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5.0 A g–1). The elemental and structural characterization identifies the highly reversible Zn2+-ion de/intercalation reaction mechanism that supports its excellent performance. The three-dimensional (3D) carbon-coated metallic oxide strategy brings opportunities for the development of high-performance aqueous rechargeable ZIBs and potentially other batteries for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of the large-scale storage equipment, more scholars are involved in the research of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to their cost-effectiveness, good safety and environment-friendly. Herein, we demonstrate a three-dimensional (3D) bird nest-like VO2/MXene heterojunction using a facile ultrasonication method combined with freeze-drying. The particular heterostructure of cathode material not only effectively suppresses the volume changes of electrodes, but also prominently improves the kinetics of active materials upon cycling, thus results in remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance. It delivers a specific capacity of 445 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and exhibits unexceptionable high-rate capacities of 244.5 and 225.0 mAh g−1 at 20.0 (over 2600 cycles) and 30.0 (over 4000 cycles) A g−1, respectively. Moreover, a high specific capacity of 247.2 mAh g−1 is achieved at 5.0 A g−1 at −20 °C, and almost no capacity loss is observed even after 2500 cycles. Moreover, the further research on ex-situ XPS and XRD measurements are carried out for VO2/MXene material in hope of better understanding its Zn2+ storage mechanism. The proposed interfacial engineering approach combining metal oxides and MXene in this work opens up a novel way for cathode in AZIBs.

Abstract:As candidates of the next generation batteries, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have drawn widespread attention owing to the advantages of environmental friendliness, low cost and ultrahigh theoretical capacity. In order to obtain superior zinc ions (Zn2+) storage ability, the cathode materials with eminent electrochemical property are placed great expectations. Herein, the hierarchical 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx microsphere is prepared by a simple spray drying process. In the heterostructure, the amorphous V2O5 not only endows abundant active sites for Zn2+ storage but also effectively alleviates Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets restacking. Meanwhile, the presence of conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene framework significantly enhances the conductivity and reaction kinetics of the electrode material. As a result, the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx exhibits an impressive Zn2+ storage ability, including the high reversible capacity (604 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), the superior rate performance and the splendid cycling stability. Furthermore, the relevant mechanism is illustrated via various characterizations. Moreover, the as-fabricated pouch ZIBs based on the 3D a-V2O5@Ti3C2Tx displays a potential practical application prospect as flexible energy storage devices. Hence, this work may provide an inspiration for the rational design of high performance ZIBs cathode materials.

Herein, we report a superlattice Zn3V2O7-C, which shows promising properties with high capacity and long-term stability as a conversion-type cathode material of AZIBs. The Zn||Zn3V2O7-C half-cells deliver a capacity of ∼210 mAh/g over 10, 000 charging/discharging cycles. A comprehensive investigation elucidates that the superlattice Zn3V2O7-C can provide more reactive sites, more stable structure, and more enhanced electrical conductivity for Zn2+ storage, thus benefiting the promotion of Zn2+ electrochemical and diffusion kinetics. The favorable characteristics of the designed cathode will pave an avenue for the development of promising electrodes for practical AZIBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have significant potential for large energy storage systems because of their high energy density, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the limited voltage window, poor reaction kinetics and structural instability of cathode materials are current bottlenecks which contain the further development of ZIBs. In this work, we rationally design a Ni-doped V2O5@3D Ni core/shell composite on a carbon cloth electrode (Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC) by growing Ni-V2O5 on free-standing 3D Ni metal nanonets for high-voltage and high-capacity ZIBs. Impressively, embedded Ni doping increases the interlayer spacing of V2O5, extending the working voltage and improving the zinc-ion (Zn302+) reaction kinetics of the cathode materials; at the same time, the 3D structure, with its high specific surface area and superior electronic conductivity, aids in fast Zn302+ transport. Consequently, the as-designed Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC cathodes can operate within a wide voltage window from 0.3 to 1.8 V vs. Zn30/Zn302+ and deliver a high capacity of 270 mAh g−1 (~1050 mAh cm−3) at a high current density of 0.8 A g−1. In addition, reversible Zn2+ (de)incorporation reaction mechanisms in the Ni-V2O5@3D Ni@CC cathodes are investigated through multiple characterization methods (SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, etc.). As a result, we achieved significant progress toward practical applications of ZIBs.

High-Capacity Layered Magnesium Vanadate with Concentrated Gel Electrolyte toward High-Performance and Wide-Temperature Zinc-Ion Battery

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as the most promising alternative energy storage system, but the development of a suitable cathode and the issues of Zn anodes have remained challenging. Herein, an effective strategy of high-capacity layered Mg0.1V2O5·H2O (MgVO) nanobelts together with a concentrated 3 M Zn(CF3SO3)2 polyacrylamide gel electrolyte was proposed to achieve a durable and practical ZIB system. By adopting the designed concentrated gel electrolyte which not only inherits the high-voltage window and wide operating temperature of the concentrated electrolyte but also addresses the Zn dendrite formation problem, the prepared cathode exhibits an ultrahigh capacity of 470 mAh g–1 and a high rate capability of 345 mAh g–1 at 5.0 A g–1, and the assembled quasi-solid-state ZIBs achieve 95% capacity retention over 3000 cycles as well as a wide operating temperature from −30 to 80 °C, demonstrating a promising prospect for large-scale energy storage. In situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) investigations also demonstrate a complex reaction mechanism for this cathode involving the (de)insertion of Zn2+, H+, and water molecules during cycling. Abstract:Aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (ZIBs) have acquired the researchers' curiosity owing to its harmlessness, cost effectiveness and high theoretical capacity of Zn anode. However, desirable cathode materials with high‐capacity and high‐rate are still scarce. In this work, we demonstrate the formation of carbon quantum dots induced vanadium pentoxide nanobelts via a facile one‐step hydrothermal method for ZIBs. It exhibits an excellent Zn ion storage capacity of 460 mA h g ‐1 at 0.1 A g −1 , superior rate capability and stable cycling performance (above 85% capacity retention over 1500 cycles at 4 A g ‐1 ). The electrochemical kinetics and zinc ion storage mechanism are also considered. An efficient architecture coupled valence engineering in the hybrid cathode is proposed to improve the electric conductivity, Zn ion diffusion rate, and cycling stability for ZIBs. This work may be a great motivation for further research on V 2 O 5 or other Vanadium‐based materials for high‐performance ZIBs.

A High-Capacity Ammonium Vanadate Cathode for Zinc-Ion Battery

Abstract:Given the advantages of being abundant in resources, environmental benign and highly safe, rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) enter the global spotlight for their potential utilization in large-scale energy storage. Despite their preliminary success, zinc-ion storage that is able to deliver capacity > 400 mAh g-1 remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate the viability of NH4V4O10 (NVO) as high-capacity cathode that breaks through the bottleneck of ZIBs in limited capacity. The first-principles calculations reveal that layered NVO is a good host to provide fast Zn2+ ions diffusion channel along its [010] direction in the interlayer space. On the other hand, to further enhance Zn2+ ion intercalation kinetics and long-term cycling stability, a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like architecture that is self-assembled by NVO nanobelts (3D-NVO) is rationally designed and fabricated through a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. As a result, such 3D-NVO cathode possesses high capacity (485 mAh g-1) and superior long-term cycling performance (3000 times) at 10 A g-1 (~ 50 s to full discharge/charge). Additionally, based on the excellent 3D-NVO cathode, a quasi-solid-state ZIB with capacity of 378 mAh g-1 is developed.

Abstract:The discontinuity of new types of clean energy, such as wind power and solar cells, has promoted the development of large-scale energy storage systems (EES). Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received extensive attention due to their inherent safety and low cost. At this stage, the performance of ZIBs is still limited by cathode materials. In this work, we have constructed a ZIBs cathode material-V2O3@N–C, through surface coating and N atom doping. The N-doped carbon coating endows V2O3@N–C with excellent structural stability and enhances its electrical conductivity. As a result, V2O3@N–C cathode delivers exceptional reversible of Zn2+ intercalation/deintercalation. The fabricated Zn/V2O3@N–C batteries exhibit high capacity of 274.6 mAh·g−1 at 5 A·g−1 and excellent capacity retention of 94% after 2000 cycles. Abstract:Rechargeable zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) featuring high abundance, environmental benignity, cost effectiveness, and intrinsic safety are regarded as high-potential grid energy storage systems, but the developments of high-performance cathodes with large capacity, high energy density, and long-term cyclability remain a huge challenge, owing to sluggish Zn2+ intercalation kinetics with bivalent charges in the cathodes. Herein, we report novel NH4V3O8 center dot 1.9H(2)O nanobelts as advanced cathode materials in aqueous and quasi-solid-state (QSS) ZIBs. When examined in aqueous ZIBs, these cathode materials enable ultrafast Zn2+ diffusion and highly reversible processes, exhibiting superior electrochemical performances with a high discharge capacity of 463 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), excellent rate capability (183 mA h g(-1) even at 10 A g(-1)), and impressive cycling stability with a capacity retention of 81% after 2000 cycles, retaining a decent discharge capacity of 166 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1). Moreover, the NH4V3O8 center dot 1.9H(2)O electrode can deliver a high energy density of 332 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 72 W kg(-1) and retain an energy density of 101 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 5519 W kg(-1). In addition, the QSS flexible Zn/NH4V3O8 center dot 1.9H(2)O battery is investigated, showing durable cycling performance and stable electrochemical properties under various bending states. This study shows that the NH4V3O8 center dot 1.9H(2)O nanobelt cathode with high energy density and long cycle life is a potential candidate for grid energy storage systems, and it sheds light on the rational design of novel cathodes for practical rechargeable ZIBs.

Abstract:Zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted extensive attention in recent years, benefiting from their high safety, eco-friendliness, low cost, and high energy density. Although many cathode materials for ZIBs have been developed, the poor stability of zinc anodes caused by uneven deposition/stripping of zinc has inevitably limited the practical application of ZIBs. Herein, we report a highly stable 3D Zn anode prepared by electrodepositing Zn on a chemically etched porous copper skeleton. The inherent excellent electrical conductivity and open structure of the 3D porous copper skeleton ensure the uniform deposition/stripping of Zn. The 3D Zn anode exhibits reduced polarization, stable cycling performance, and almost 100% Coulombic efficiency as well as fast electrochemical kinetics during repeated Zn deposition/stripping processes for 350 h. Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have become a research hotspot in recent years, due to their huge potential for high-energy, fast-rate, safe and low-cost energy storage. To realize good electrochemical properties of ZIBs, cathode materials with prominent Zn2+ storage capability are highly needed. Herein, we report a promising ZIB cathode material based on electrochemically induced transformation of vanadium oxides. Specifically, K2V6O16·1.5H2O nanofibers were synthesized through a simple stirring method at near room temperature and then used as cathode materials for ZIBs in different electrolytes. The cathode presented superior Zn2+ storage capability in Zn(OTf)2 aqueous electrolyte, including high capacity of 321 mAh/g, fast charge/discharge ability (96 mAh/g delivered in 35 s), high energy density of 235 Wh/kg and good cycling performance. Mechanism analysis evidenced that in Zn(OTf)2 electrolyte, Zn2+ intercalation in the first discharge process promoted K2V6O16·1.5H2O nanofibers to transform into Zn3+xV2O7(OH)2·2H2O nanoflakes, and the latter served as the Zn2+-storage host in subsequent charge/discharge processes. Benefiting from open-framework crystal structure and sufficiently exposed surface, the Zn3+xV2O7(OH)2·2H2O nanoflakes exhibited high Zn2+ diffusion coefficient, smaller charge-transfer resistance and good reversibility of Zn2+ intercalation/de-intercalation, thus leading to superior electrochemical performance. While in ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte, the cathode material cannot sufficiently transform into Zn3+xV2O7(OH)2·2H2O, thereby corresponding to inferior electrochemical behaviors. Underlying mechanism and influencing factors of such a transformation phenomenon was also explored. This work not only reports a high-performance ZIB cathode material based on electrochemically induced transformation of vanadium oxides, but also provides new insights into Zn2+-storage electrochemistry.

Abstract:The development of a high specific capacity and stable manganese (Mn)-based cathode material is very attractive for aqueous zinc-ion (Zn 2+ ) batteries (ZIBs). However, the inherent low electrical conductivity and volume expansion challenges limit its stability improvement. Here, a mesoporous ZnMn 2 O 4 (ZMO) nanocage (N-ZMO) coupled with nitrogen doping and oxygen vacancies is prepared by defect engineering and rational structural design as a high-performance cathode material for rechargeable ZIBs. The oxygen vacancies enhance the electrical conductivity of the material and the nitrogen doping releases the strong electrostatic force of the material to maintain a higher structural stability. Interestingly, N-ZMO exhibits excellent ability of Zn 2+ storage (225.4 mAh·g −1 at 0.3 A·g −1 ), good rate, and stable cycling performance (88.4 mAh·g −1 after 1,000 cycles at 3 A·g −1 ). Furthermore, a flexible quasi-solid-state device with high energy density (261.6 Wh·kg − ) is assembled, demonstrating long-lasting durability. We believe that the strategy in this study can provide a new approach for developing aqueous ZIBs.
