Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Mixed-lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials have important application values in ratiometric temperature sensing. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer a self-supporting network to conveniently tune multiple Ln3+ ions, but challenges still exist in material design. In this work, we selected two simple organic molecules as hydrogen-bonded building blocks, which are melamine (MA) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) owning the suitable energy to sensitize Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. MA assists PDC molecules to support the network in a new HOF (MA-PDC), where the abundant carboxylic groups enable Ln3+ ions to combine with the HOF. Based on the effective energy transfer process, the emission of Tb3+ and Eu3+ from TbxEu1–x@MA-PDC (x = 0.75, 0.85, 0.90) shows the obvious temperature dependence, which benefits ratiometric temperature detection. Taking Tb0.85Eu0.15@MA-PDC as an example, when temperature varies from 303 to 443 K, the intensity ratio exhibits distinct S-type response based on Mott-Seitz model. It also behaves good relative sensitivity (1.03%/K at 383 K), low temperature resolution (0.059 K) and large reproducibility (>96%). This work demonstrates that functionalization of a simple-component HOF with mixed Ln3+ ions is a fantastic strategy to develop novel ratiometric thermometers of both low cost and good performance.
A ratiometric optical thermometer with dual-color emission based on Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 microcrystals

Abstract:With the increasing demand for non-contact fluorescence intensity ratio-based optical thermometry, novel phosphor materials with high-efficiency, dual-emitting centers, and differentiable temperature sensitivity are highly desired. In this work, rare earth Eu2+ ions were incorporated into CsCu2I3 microcrystals by solid–state reaction. Under a single UV excitation, the as-synthesized samples exhibit two emissions: 452 nm blue emission from the 5d→4f transition of Eu2+ and 582 nm yellow emission from self-trapped exciton emission of CsCu2I3. The photoluminescence quantum yield reaches to 50%. The dual-band emission of Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 shows different temperature responses in the range of 260–360 K. Based on fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the maximum absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity are 0.091 K–1 (at 360 K) and 2.60%/K (at 260 K), respectively. These results suggest that Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 could be a good candidate for highly sensitive optical thermometer.

Abstract:The first example of a ratiometric Eu/Tb thermometer based on a lanthanide phosphonate is reported, which presents a temperature dependent emission under 393 nm excitation that enables its use as a molecular thermometer with a maximum relative sensitivity of 3.9% K-1 and a minimum temperature uncertainty of 0.15 K, both at 38 K. Additionally, the compound is a competitive luminescent colorimetric probe showing temperature dependent (x, y) CIE color coordinates changing from yellow, (0.48, 0.48) at 18 K, to red, (0.64, 0.37) at 300 K.
Eu3+ Single-Doped Phosphor with Antithermal Quenching Behavior and Multicolor-Tunable Properties for Luminescence Thermometry

Abstract:To date, non-contact luminescence thermometry methods based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technology have been studied extensively. However, designing phosphors with high relative sensitivity (Sr) has become a research hotspot. In this work, Eu3+ single-doped Ca2Sb2O7:Eu3+ phosphors with a high Sr value for dual-emitting-center luminescence thermometry are developed and proposed. The anti-thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ originating from the energy transfer (ET) of host → Eu3+ is found and proved in the designed phosphors. Interestingly, adjustable color emission from blue to orange can be achieved. Surprisingly, the degree of the anti-thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ gradually reduces from 240 to 127% as the Eu3+ doping content increases from 0.005 to 0.05 mol, attributed to most Eu3+ being located in the low symmetrical [Ca1O8] dodecahedral site. According to the differentiable responses of the host and Eu3+ to temperature, the maximal Sr value reaches 3.369% K-1 (383 K). Moreover, the ambient temperature can be intuitively predicted by observing the emitting color. Owing to the excellent performance in optical thermometry, color-tunable properties, and outstanding acid and alkali resistance for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, the developed Eu3+ single-doped Ca2Sb2O7:Eu3+ phosphors are expected to be prospective candidates in luminescence thermometers and LED devices in various conditions.

Abstract:A novel Eu2+-Eu3+ co-activated ratiometric thermo-sensitive phosphor was developed and synthesized by solid-state reaction. The valence state of Eu, photoluminescence and thermo-sensitive performance of the phosphor prepared either in ambient air or carbothermally were investigated and discussed. The phosphor shows high sensitivity (S a = 0.0173 K–1, S r = 0.461%/K) and superior signal discriminability (Δν = ∼10380 cm−1). The thermo-sensitive performance is subject to the dual effects of different thermo-responses by Eu2+ versus Eu3+ combined with energy transfer from Eu2+ to Eu3+, so that the sensitivity of the phosphor in the temperature range presents a non-monotonic trend. The development of the BaAl2B2O7:Eu2+,Eu3+ phosphor is not only expected to be relevant for application in the field of temperature sensing, but also of reference significance for improving the sensitivity by means of energy transfer between co-activator ions over a wider temperature range of Eu2+-Eu3+ co-activated ratiometric thermo-sensitive phosphors. 1.

Abstract:High-performing lanthanide (Ln3+)-based luminescence thermometry is gaining widespread attention for its remote temperature reading, broad temperature range, high sensitivity, resolution, and stability in various applications. However, facile strategies for constructing multi-mode luminescence thermometry based on a simple material system are still challenging. Herein, we propose a dual-mode single-band ratiometric (SBR) luminescence thermometry based on the tunable Eu3+ luminescence in La2(WO4)3 (LaWO). Eu3+-doped La2(WO4)3 (LaWO:Eu) phosphor was synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method. The rigid lattice of LaWO allows high content of Eu3+ doping without concentration quenching of luminescence, which endows high fluorescence intensity. In addition, in-situ and dynamic regulations of thermal-responsive luminescent properties of Eu3+ are systematically investigated, which enables the construction of SBR luminescence thermometry. At temperatures from 300 to 500 K, the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities reach 0.032 K-1 and 0.85% K−1, respectively. The high sensitivity and stability indicate that our results provide a facile and effective strategy for developing multi-mode luminescence thermometry and hold potential applications in various fields.

Mechanistic Investigation of Sensitized Europium Luminescence: Excited State Dynamics and Luminescence Lifetime Thermometry

Abstract:Fluorescent nanothermometers based on thermal-dependent lifetime have a significant advantage in biological imaging owing to their immunity toward scattering, absorption, and autofluorescence. In this study, we present the first example of a water-soluble europium complex ([L1Eu]-) that exhibits high sensitivity (1.2% K-1 at 298 K) based on a temperature-dependent lifetime in the millisecond time range. This complex and its analogues show considerable potential for organelle imaging. The mechanism behind this thermal-sensitive behavior has been extensively investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy and variable temperature time-resolved luminescence methods. A highly efficient ligand sensitization process and a thermally activated back energy transfer process have been demonstrated. This study bridges the gap in small molecule thermometers with lifetimes longer than 1 ms and provides guidance in ligand design for metal coordination complex thermometers.
Rational construction of luminescent Eu-doped Y-MOF for ratiometric temperature sensing

Abstract:Introducing lanthanide(iii) ions into a MOF structure is one of the most effective strategies to construct luminescent MOFs with multiple emission centers for fluorescent applications. In this work, a functionalized Eu3+-doped Y-MOF (Eu@SNNU-325) was constructed by using a cation exchange strategy. The photoluminescence result shows that Eu@SNNU-325 exhibits a unique emission spectrum, namely, the absence of the organic ligand peak and the very strong Y3+/Eu3+ characteristic peaks. Interestingly, the smart luminescent Eu@SNNU-325 as a ratiometric thermometer for temperature sensing has good self-calibrated ability and a high maximum relative sensitivity (S m) value (1.2% K-1 at 260 K). This work presents the construction of a smart Eu3+-functionalized Y-MOF thermometer through a cation exchange strategy, providing a good idea for the future development and design of Y-MOF thermometers.
Thermally enhanced photoluminescence and temperature sensing properties of Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors

Abstract:Currently,lanthanide ions doped luminescence materials applying as optical thermometers have arose much concern. Basing on the different responses of two emissions to temperature, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique can be executed and further estimate the sensitivities to assess the optical thermometry performances. In this study, we introduce different doping concentrations of Eu$^{3+}$ ions into negative expansion material Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$, accessing to the thermal enhanced luminescence from 373 to 548 K, and investigate the temperature sensing properties in detail. All samples exhibit good thermally enhanced luminescence behavior. The emission intensity of Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors reaches at 147.81% of initial intensity at 473 K. As the Eu doping concentration increases, the resistance of the samples to thermal quenching decreases. The FIR technique based on the transitions 5D0-7F1 (592 nm) and 5D0-7F2 (613 nm) of Eu$^{3+}$ ions demonstrate a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 3.063% K-1 at 298 K for Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors. The sensitivity of sample decreases with the increase of Eu$^{3+}$ concentration. Benefiting from the thermal enhanced luminescence performance and good temperature sensing properties, the Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors can be applies as optical thermometers.

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry using sharp line emission of lanthanide ions has become an active area of research as it offers the advantages of remote temperature sensing with high sensitivity and superior spatial resolution. The most widely applied method relies on the temperature dependence of the luminescence intensity ratio of emission lines from two thermally coupled levels. However, the usable temperature range for this type of Boltzmann thermometer is limited. In addition, the weak and narrow line absorption of the parity forbidden 4f-4f transitions of lanthanides forms a serious drawback. To solve both problems, we here report a new dual functionality luminescence thermometer: Gd2O2S co-doped with Eu3+ and Nd3+. This material combines Boltzmann and energy transfer thermometry to extend the temperature range and uses the strong and broad charge transfer absorption band of Eu3+ for sensitization. In the T-range of 300-500 K efficient energy transfer from Eu3+ to Nd3+ allows for charge transfer-sensitized luminescence thermometry using near infrared emission from the thermally coupled 4F3/2 and 4F5/2 levels of Nd3+. Above 500 K a high temperature sensitivity is obtained using the strong temperature dependence of the luminescence intensity ratio of red Eu3+ to near infrared Nd3+ emission. The dual-functionality provides a single thermometer combining strong absorption and high relative sensitivity (0.6 - 1.4%) over a wide temperature range (300 to 650 K). Finally, it is proposed that this dual-function luminescent thermometer has promising potential for multifunctional applications in biosensors and in situ temperature measurements of chemical reaction process.

Abstract:Temperature measurements and thermal mapping using luminescent MOF operating in the high-temperature range are of great interest in the micro-electronic diagnosis. In this paper, we report a thermostable Eu/Tb-mixed MOF Eu0.37Tb0.63-BTC-a exhibiting strong luminescence at elevated temperature, which can serve as a ratiometric luminescent thermometer for high-temperature range. The high-temperature operating range (313–473K), high relative sensitivity and accurate temperature resolution, make such a Eu/Tb-mixed MOF useful for micro-electronic diagnosis.
Eu3+-doped manganese tungstate for multiparametric and colorimetric luminescence thermometry

Abstract:Improvement of luminescent thermometers requires not only the search for high-sensitivity thermometric outputs, but also availability of multiple thermometric parameters affording a combined and reliable response. We hereby detail for the first time the luminescence of Eu3+ in manganese tungstate (Eu3+:MnWO4) solids obtained by coprecipitation under ultraviolet excitation and how this material provided an optical thermometric response from 77 K to 373 K via excitation and emission spectra. Processing of up to five thermometric parameters, namely bandwidths, band positions, band shifts and luminescence intensity ratios, resulted in relative thermal sensitivities as high as 1.56% K−1 and temperature uncertainties between 0.01 and 2 K depending on the choice of the spectral parameter. In addition, we demonstrate that Eu3+:MnWO4 also act as a qualitative colorimetric thermosensor because of progressive change of emission color to greenish-yellow to bluish-green upon heating under UV excitation. Therefore, our results show that the combination of broadband tungstate emissions with the 4f-4f narrow emissions of Eu3+ is an effective approach to achieve a multiparametric luminescent thermal response via emission, excitation and visual observation, which makes Eu3+:MnWO4 a promising candidate for advanced thermometry applications.
Designing a dual-wavelength excitation Eu3+/Mn4+ co-doped phosphors for high-sensitivity luminescence thermometry

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry has been widely concerned by researchers due to its quick response, high spatial resolution, and remote measurement. However, low sensitivity is still an existing problem and affects its development. Herein, the luminescence thermometer with high sensitivity taking advantage of the distinguished thermal response between Eu3+ and Mn4+ is designed. Excitedly, Eu3+ exhibits an anti-thermal quenching behavior under 310 nm excitation and a slight thermal quenching behavior under 393 nm excitation due to the energy transfer of host→Eu3+, while Mn4+ presents a strong thermal quenching behavior. Moreover, the energy transfer of Eu3+→Mn4+ (λex = 310 nm and λex = 393 nm) can also be observed for the Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors during the heating process. On the basis of the diverse thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ and Mn4+, the thermometric performances are investigated by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of Eu3+(5D0→7F2)/Mn4+(2Eg→4A2g) under a dual-wavelength excitation. The maximum relative sensitivities of the designed phosphors are determined to be 4.072% K−1 at 305 K under 310 nm and 3.072% K−1 at 351 K under 393 nm excitation. It's worth noting that the thermometric characteristic can be modified by various excitation wavelengths. Hence, the developed Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors have great potential in the field of luminescence thermometry and provide an effective strategy for designing high-sensitivity dual-wavelength excitation optical thermometers.

Efficient Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer for colorimetric luminescence sensing

Abstract:State-of-the-art Tb-to-Eu energy transfer (TEET) efficiency (>90%) under ultralow Eu3+ proportion (<6%) has been achieved in Eu/Tb bimetallic lanthanide coordination polymers (LnCPs). The yellow-light-emitting sample as sensor exhibits micromolar l-phenylalanine (l-Phe) in water and serum via obvious yellow-to-green luminometric behavior, meanwhile nanomolar-level detection limits are determined in terms of an updated Stern-Volmer equation with high selectivity and competitiveness. Excited-state inter-ligand photon transfer (ESILPT) greatly contributes to superior TEET property and outstanding luminometric behavior. Ratiometric optical thermometer with high-sensitive temperature sensing based on synergetic luminescence of Ce3+-Eu2+ in LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors

Abstract:Single-phase Ce3+, Eu2+ co-doped LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors are successfully prepared via solid reaction process. The crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal quenching performance of LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ samples are systematically studied. The presence of two crystallographic positions of Sr2+ ions in LiSr4(BO3)3 host makes the emission bands of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion exhibit asymmetry. Based on the configuration coordinate model, the thermal quenching of luminescence from Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion is investigated in detail. The temperature-sensitive performance is further studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of LiSr4(BO3)3:0.06Ce3+, 0.04Eu2+ phosphor. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.057 K-1 and 4.017% K−1, respectively, which are better than many previously reported inorganic optical thermometry materials. Besides, the emissions of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion are clearly separated, providing good signal discrimination ability. The results demonstrate that LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ phosphors have outstanding temperature-sensitive properties and can be the excellent optical thermometric materials.

Abstract:Eu/Tb metal–organic frameworks (Eu/Tb-MOFs), exhibiting Eu3+ and Tb3+ emissions, stand out as some of the most fascinating luminescent thermometers. As the relative thermal sensitivity model is limited to its lack of precision for fitting ratio of Eu3+ and Tb3+ emissions, accurately predicting the sensing performance of Eu/Tb-MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a series of luminescent Eu/Tb-MOF thermometers, EuxTb1−xL, with excellent thermal sensitivity around physiological levels, achieved through the tuning energy transfer from ligands to Eu3+ and Tb3+ and between the Ln ions. It was found that the singlet lowest-energy excited state (S1) of the ligand and the higher triplet energy level (Tn) are crucial in the energy transfer processes of ligand→Tb3+ and ligand→Eu3+. This enables EuxTb1−xL to serve as an effective platform for exploring the impact of these energy transfer processes on the temperature-sensing properties of luminescent Eu/Tb-MOF thermometers. The relative thermal sensitivity is comparable to that of dual-center MOF-based luminescent thermometers operating at physiological levels. This study provides valuable insights into the design of new Eu/Tb thermometers and the accurate prediction of their sensing performance.
