Abstract:We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator model with the gain, loss, spontaneous emission, nearest-neighbor coupling and amplitude phase coupling (as described by the linewidth enhancement factor alpha) taken into account. It is demonstrated that active mode-locking can be achieved for moderate alpha parameter values. Simulations also indicate that large alpha parameters may destabilize the mode-locking behavior and result in irregular pulsations, which nevertheless can be effectively suppressed by incorporating detuning of individual cavity resonant frequencies in the device design.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally that random phase modulation of an erbium-doped fiber ring-laser by an intra-cavity electro-optic phase modulator did not inhibit ultrashort-pulse operation. Stable and self-starting ultrashort-pulse operation with a single pulse circulating in the cavity was achieved even when the phase modulator was driven with random sequences sufficiently fast and strong to render the laser cavity modeless, in the sense that heterodyning of the laser output did not show any spectral lines corresponding to a mode spectrum. No significant change in measured pulse characteristics was observed, compared to conventional mode-locking in the unmodulated cavity. The insensitivity to the random phase modulation is expected, given the lack of phase-sensitive elements in the cavity.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber bidirectional passively mode-locked soliton laser with what we believe is a novel cavity configuration. Using a four-port circulator, we incorporate two different semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) into the laser cavity, which enables bidirectional mode locking. The laser allows the generation of two independent countercirculating mode-locked pulse trains, each with an individual fundamental repetition rate that can be adjusted by varying the SESAM pigtail length. Two countercirculating pulse trains with repetition rates of 21.3 and 15.2 MHz are obtained simultaneously. By controlling the intracavity loss imposed on these two pulse trains, either one of the two pulse trains can be switched on or off. The bidirectional operation with other repetition rates is also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a long cavity passively mode-locked fibre laser. The proposed mode locker is a reflective long cavity non-linear optical loop mirror (NOLM) which consists of a 50:50 coupler and 2-km single-mode fibres. The laser achieves stable mode locking at a fundamental repetition rate of 100kHz. The rectangular pulses operating in dissipative soliton resonance region is generated in the laser. The relationship between the pulse duration and the pump power is investigated in detail. When the pump power is 200mW, the laser generates rectangular pulses at 1565.57nm (central wavelength) with pulse duration of 81.5ns. The single pulse energy as high as 33.34 nJ is obtained. The results show that the reflective NOLM is an efficient mode locker and useful for the generation of high energy pulse.

Abstract:Passive harmonic mode-locking of dissipative solitons is demonstrated in all-normal dispersion Yb-doped fibre lasers.A difference equation model of the mode-locked fibre lasers is adopted to simulate the intra-cavity nonlinear dynamics.Hysteresis phenomena around the mode-locking threshold,and the effect of introducing linear phase bias are discussed.The passive harmonic mode-locking as one kind of multipulsing operations is revealed.Moreover,the simulation shows the bistability between multipulsing and single-pulse or period multiplication.

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, we report on a stable passive 23rd harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber soliton laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this laser, 23 solitons are uniformly distributed in the cavity simultaneously, and all solitons have the same energy and duration. The increase of the coupler output enhances the dispersive radiation, and the longer cavity strengthens the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves. The two above factors play the key function to generate the 23rd harmonic mode-locked operation.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dual-wavelength passively mode-locked soliton fiber laser based on the single-wall carbon nanotube saturable absorber. By using a simple scheme of adjusting the intracavity loss, the gain profile of the erbium-doped fiber laser is effectively controlled. Besides operating at a single wavelength, the laser is able to simultaneously generate sub-picosecond pulses at both ~1532 and 1557 nm wavelength. The mode-locking wavelength can also be quickly switched from one wavelength to the other by changing the intracavity loss with a tunable attenuator.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:An analysis was made on a novel fiber-ring soliton laser of active-passive mode-locking by solving the path-averaged nonlinear Schrodinger's equation (NLSE), and the conditions under which the laser will run stably were then obtained. The split-step algorithm was used for numerical integrating the NLSE, and a transform-limited pulse-train was obtained whose pulse-width is of 985fs, repetition rate of 10GHz, and spectrum-width of 323GHz when the working wavelength is of 1.55 micron.

Abstract:Locking of longitudinal modes in laser cavities is the common path to generate ultrashort pulses. In traditional multi-wavelength mode-locked lasers, the group velocities rely on lasing wavelengths due to the chromatic dispersion, yielding multiple trains of independently evolved pulses. Here, we show that mode-locked solitons at different wavelengths can be synchronized inside the cavity by engineering the intracavity group delay with a programmable pulse shaper. Frequency-resolved measurements fully retrieve the fine temporal structure of pulses, validating the direct generation of synchronized ultrafast lasers from two to five wavelengths with sub-pulse repetition-rate up to ~1.26 THz. Simulation results well reproduce and interpret the key experimental phenomena, and indicate that the saturable absorption effect automatically synchronize multi-wavelength solitons in despite of the small residual group delay difference. These results demonstrate an effective approach to create synchronized complex-structure solitons, and offer an effective platform to study the evolution dynamics of nonlinear wavepackets.

Abstract:Operation states of multiple solitons (MS), noise-like pulses (NLP), and a special pattern of MS coexist with NLP have been observed in a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. By increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization state of the cavity, the operation state from MS to NLP will go through three states: pure MS, MS & NLP, and pure NLP. The experiment results show that the state transition from pure MS to MS & NLP is mutational, while the state transition from MS & NLP to pure NLP is gradual. To our knowledge, this is the first time detailed exploration of the conversion process from MS to NLP operation in mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:In this paper, a mode-locked Ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is proposed. The laser generates a wide-spectrum dissipative soliton resonance mode-locked pulse with strong stimulated Raman scattering. The fiber laser is pumped forward, and the fiber ring cavity contains double-cladding Yb-doped fiber, output coupler, polarization controller, polarization independent isolator and other elements. NOLM is connected with the ring cavity by through a 3dB beam splitter and 25m single-mode fiber. The total length of the eight-shape cavity laser is about 60meters. By adjusting the intra-cavity polarization controller, a stable dissipative soliton resonance mode-locked spike pulse can be achieved. The repetition frequency of the pulse train is 3.44MHz, which is consistent with the cavity length. The 3dB bandwidth of the spectrum reaches 70.6nm, and the 10dB bandwidth is close to 147.11nm. In this experiment, dissipative soliton resonance mode-locked pulses with wide spectrum and high pulse energy are realized by a traditional mode-locking method, which has wide application in many fields such as laser spectral detection and terahertz wave generation.

Abstract:Harnessing complexity in laser light The development of lasers and the quality of the output light has been crucially dependent on understanding and being able to control the process occurring within the laser-generating cavity. In a real laser cavity, there are both longitudinal and transverse modes; for the highest-quality lasers, reducing the effects of the latter has been standard practice. However, using a graded index fiber cavity, Wright et al. demonstrate that the longitudinal and transverse modes can be locked to provide an output of complex coherent light. Harnessing, rather than filtering out, the transverse modes could produce a valuable and flexible light source applicable across a broad range of disciplines. Science , this issue p. 94

Abstract:We summarize two kinds of mode-locked fiber lasers (MLFLs) that generate intra-cavity optical vortex beams (OVBs) based on long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) and implement extra-cavity hybrid mode control with another kind of all-fiber mode converter called acoustically-induced fiber grating (AIFG). Firstly, the LPFG we used works at the turn-around point (TAP). Since mode conversion through TAP-LPFG can produce the complete set of eigenmodes of LP11 mode, OVBs are then generated by inducing a phase difference of $pi/2$ to the eigenmodes. Secondly, the 1.94 W average-power mode-locked pulses come from a MLFL in the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) regime. The linear cavity is formed by two fiber loop mirrors (FLMs) whose splitting ratios are 50/50 and 5/95. The 5/95 FLM operates as a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) which aims at initiating stable DSR. The output fundamental mode is then fully or partially converted to high-order mode (HOM) through AIFG. Mode patterns are captured through an optical imaging system. Taking the advantage of all-fiber mode converters, our approach may expand the diversity of mode control under high-power condition and other researches in high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:Passive harmonic mode locking of an erbium-doped fiber laser based on few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) saturable absorber (SA) is demonstrated. The few-layer MoS2 is prepared by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then transferred onto the end face of a fiber connector to form a fiber-compatible MoS2 SA. The 20th harmonic mode-locked pulses at 216-MHz repetition rate are stably generated with a pulse duration of 1.42 ps and side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 36.1 dB. The results confirm that few-layer MoS2 can serve as an effective SA for mode-locked fiber lasers.
