Abstract:Electroluminescence in light-emitting devices relies on the encounter and radiative recombination of electrons and holes in the emissive layer. In organometal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes, poor film formation creates electrical shunting paths, where injected charge carriers bypass the perovskite emitter, leading to a loss in electroluminescence yield. Here, we report a solution-processing method to block electrical shunts and thereby enhance electroluminescence quantum efficiency in perovskite devices. In this method, a blend of perovskite and a polyimide precursor dielectric (PIP) is solution-deposited to form perovskite nanocrystals in a thin-film matrix of PIP. The PIP forms a pinhole-free charge-blocking layer, while still allowing the embedded perovskite crystals to form electrical contact with the electron and hole-injection layers. This modified structure reduces nonradiative current losses and improves quantum efficiency by 2 orders of magnitude, giving an external quantum efficiency of 1.2%. This simple technique provides an alternative route to circumvent film formation problems in perovskite optoelectronics and offers the possibility of flexible and high-performance light-emitting displays.

Abstract:Drift-diffusion model is an indispensable modeling tool to understand the carrier dynamics (transport, recombination, and collection) and simulate practical-efficiency of solar cells (SCs) through taking into account various carrier recombination losses existing in multilayered device structures. Exploring the way to predict and approach the SC efficiency limit by using the drift-diffusion model will enable us to gain more physical insights and design guidelines for emerging photovoltaics, particularly perovskite solar cells. Our work finds out that two procedures are the prerequisites for predicting and approaching the SC efficiency limit. First, the intrinsic radiative recombination needs to be corrected after adopting optical designs which will significantly affect the open-circuit voltage at its Shockley–Queisser limit. Abstract:Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices are gaining much attention owing to their remarkable performance and low processing cost, particularly for solar cells. However, for perovskite light-emitting diodes, non-radiative charge recombination has limited the electroluminescence efficiency. Here we demonstrate perovskite–polymer bulk heterostructure light-emitting diodes exhibiting external quantum efficiencies of up to 20.1% (at current densities of 0.1–1 mA cm−2). The light-emitting diode emissive layer comprises quasi-two-dimensional and three-dimensional (2D/3D) perovskites and an insulating polymer. Photogenerated excitations migrate from quasi-2D to lower-energy sites within 1 ps, followed by radiative bimolecular recombination in the 3D regions. From near-unity external photoluminescence quantum efficiencies and transient kinetics of the emissive layer with and without charge-transport contacts, we find non-radiative recombination pathways to be effectively eliminated, consistent with optical models giving near 100% internal quantum efficiencies. Although the device brightness and stability (T50 = 46 h in air at peak external quantum efficiency) require further improvement, our results indicate the significant potential of perovskite-based photon sources.

Abstract:Hot carrier solar cells could offer a solution to achieve high efficiency solar cells. Due to the hot-phonon bottleneck in perovskites, the hot carrier lifetime could reach hundreds of ps. Such that exploring perovskites could be a good way to promote hot carrier technology. With the incorporation of large organic cations, the hot carrier lifetime can be improved. By using ultrafast transient spectroscopy, the hot carrier relaxation and extraction kinetics are measured. From the transient kinetics, 2-phenyl-acetamidine cation based perovskites exhibit the highest initial carrier temperature, longest carrier relaxation, and slowest hot carrier relaxation. Such superior behavior could be attributed to reduced electron-phonon coupling induced by lattice strain, which is a result of the large organic cation and also a possible surface electronic state change. Our discovery exhibits the potential to use large organic cations for the use of hot carrier perovskite solar cells.
Modulation of Perovskite Surface Energetics for State‐of‐the‐Art Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite surface energetics, which determines the energy‐level alignment at the interface and thus controls the charge carrier dynamics, is essential to harness the potential of perovskite‐based optoelectronics (e.g., light‐emitting diodes and solar cells). Herein, the recent progress on the modulation of perovskite surface energetics for state‐of‐the‐art solar cells is reviewed. First, the architecture evolution of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and how the underlying substrates regulate the perovskite surface energetics are discussed, followed by their significant roles on device efficiency and stability. Then, the strategies to tune perovskite surface energetics including intrinsic or extrinsic defect doping, charge transfer doping, surface dipole formation, and surface reconstruction are focused on, which help to boost charge carrier transport. Notably, the state‐of‐the‐art efficiencies have been achieved via effective modulation on perovskite surface energetics. Finally, the insights on the design rules of engineering perovskite surface energetics are provided for the further development of highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Abstract:In the perovskite/polymer based parallel-like tandem solar cell, the distinctive absorption spectra between the organic–inorganic halide perovskite absorber (CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI)) and poly-(diketopyrrolopyrrole-terthiophene) (PDPP3T) polymer absorber make it possible to investigate the electronic properties of charge carriers generated in either the perovskite or PDPP3T layer separately. The current density–voltage (J–V) curves of the device are measured under the monochromatic LED irradiation at significantly different wavelengths to confirm the charge carrier generated in MAPI offer higher Voc. The voltage biased external quantum efficiency (EQE) measurement is employed to understand the charge transport mechanism in the system. The J–V curves and EQE data confirm that charge carriers generated by the photons absorbed in the perovskite layer or in PDPP3T behave independently. Compared with the bulk heterojunction structure, this parallel-like tandem structure increases Voc while reducing thermalization loss, providing a possibility to break the traditional Shockley–Queisser (S–Q) limit set for single junction devices.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of thin film solar cells using organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite as an absorber has achieved over 25%. An augment of the output voltage can further increase the efficiency approaching the Shockley–Queisser efficiency limitation, which is highly correlated with charge carrier management at interfaces in perovskite devices. This perspective presents some considerations to improve carrier transfer and reduce recombination loss for highly efficient perovskite solar cells, including primary requests on charge carrier transfer dynamics, reasonable design methodologies of interfacial materials, and tuning interface interaction between perovskite and charge transport layers.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites exhibit large bulk crystal domain sizes, rare traps, excellent mobilities and carriers that are free at room temperature—properties that support their excellent performance in charge-separating devices. In devices that rely on the forward injection of electrons and holes, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), excellent mobilities contribute to the efficient capture of non-equilibrium charge carriers by rare non-radiative centres. Moreover, the lack of bound excitons weakens the competition of desired radiative (over undesired non-radiative) recombination. Here we report a perovskite mixed material comprising a series of differently quantum-size-tuned grains that funnels photoexcitations to the lowest-bandgap light-emitter in the mixture. The materials function as charge carrier concentrators, ensuring that radiative recombination successfully outcompetes trapping and hence non-radiative recombination. We use the new material to build devices that exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.8% and a radiance of 80 W sr −1 m −2 . These represent the brightest and most efficient solution-processed near-infrared LEDs to date.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have made unprecedented efficiency improvements for bandgaps wider than 1.5 eV, but narrow-bandgap perovskites still have low efficiency in single-junction and tandem cells. A significant challenge is the front-surface reflectance inherited from the superstrate device fabrication. In this work, we applied a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) light scattering layer to a 1.22-eV-bandgap perovskite cell and demonstrated 2.6 mA/cm(2) increase in short-circuit current density. We further performed optical simulations that confirm the effectiveness of reducing reflection with the PDMS layer, and we show that the parasitic absorption in the front transparent conductive oxide and contact layers are responsible for the other optical losses.

Abstract:Perovskite semiconductors have demonstrated outstanding external luminescence quantum yields, enabling high power conversion efficiencies (PCE). However, the precise conditions to advance to an efficiency regime above monocrystalline silicon cells are not well understood. Here, we establish a simulation model that well describes efficient p-i-n type perovskite solar cells and a range of different experiments. We then study important device and material parameters and we find that an efficiency regime of 30% can be unlocked by optimizing the built-in potential across the perovskite layer by using either highly doped (10^19 cm-3), thick transport layers (TLs) or ultrathin undoped TLs, e.g. self-assembled monolayers. Importantly, we only consider parameters that have been already demonstrated in recent literature, that is a bulk lifetime of 10 us, interfacial recombination velocities of 10 cm/s, a perovskite bandgap of 1.5 eV and an EQE of 95%. A maximum efficiency of 31% is predicted for a bandgap of 1.4 eV. Finally, we demonstrate that the relatively high mobile ion density does not represent a significant barrier to reach this efficiency regime. Thus, the results of this paper promise continuous PCE improvements until perovskites may become the most efficient single-junction solar cell technology in the near future.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite have been intensively studied in the past decades due to their outstanding performance in solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Recently, the emergence of two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunctions have enabled many solar cell devices with >25% power conversion efficiency, which was driven by the advances in our understanding of the structural and photophysical properties of the heterojunctions and our ability in controlling these properties through organic cation configuration in 2D perovskites. In this feature article, we discuss the fundamental understanding of structure characteristics and the carrier dynamics in 2D/3D heterojunctions and their impacting factors. We further elaborate the design strategies of molecular configuration of the organic cations to achieve thorough management of these properties. Finally, the recent advances of 2D/3D heterostructures in solar cells, light emitting devices and photodetectors are highlighted, which translate the fundamental understandings to the device applications, and also reveal the remaining challenges in ligand design for next generation of stable devices. Future development prospects and related challenges are also provided with wide perspective and insightful thoughts.

Abstract:An organic bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device based on a blend of two conjugated polymers, a polyphenylenevinylene as the electron donor and a red emitting polyfluorene as the acceptor, is presented with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 52% at 530nm and a power conversion efficiency, measured under AM1.5G, 100mW∕cm2 conditions, of 1.5% on an active area of 0.36cm2.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic halide perovskite has received extensive attention as a light harvester for next‐generation low‐cost and high‐performance photovoltaics. Its superior optoelectronic properties are attractive among most thin film absorber materials, such as an extremely high absorption coefficient, optimal band gap, ambipolar carrier transport property, and high defects tolerance. However, it requires suitable electrodes and carrier transport materials to fulfill efficient photovoltaic process within an entire device. Thus, the interfaces along the device play a crucial role in determining device photovoltaic performance. Here, the progress of understanding interfaces in perovskite photovoltaics is reviewed from the perspective of processing chemistry and photophysics of carriers, which are the key parameters for the corresponding device photovoltaic behavior. This study is mainly focused on the relevant working mechanism, interface design fundamentals, and the resulting carrier dynamic control over the entire architecture. The study of the interfaces with appropriate materials design provides a fundamental understanding of the photocarrier behavior, including separation, transportation, and collection. The accumulative efforts will contribute to the construction of high‐efficiency perovskite‐based single junction and multijunction photovoltaic devices. It also affects other properties of perovskite solar cells, including J–V hysteresis phenomenon, and long‐term stability. Suggestions with respect to required improvements and future research directions are provided based on the current field of available literature.
Unveiling Structurally Engineered Carrier Dynamics in Hybrid Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskite Thin Films Toward Controllable Emission.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites driving carrier self-separation have rapidly advanced the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, insightful understanding of carrier dynamics in the perovskites is still inadequate. The distribution of multiple perovskite phases, crucial for carrier separation, is controversial. Here we report a systematic study on carrier dynamics of spin-coated (C6H5CH2CH2NH3)2(CH3NH3)n-1PbnI3n+1 (n = 3 and 5) perovskite thin films. Efficient electrons transfer from small-n to large-n perovskite phases, and holes transfer reversely with time scales from ∼0.3 to 30.0 ps. The multiple perovskite phases are arranged perpendicularly to substrate from small to large n and also coexist randomly in the same horizontal planes. Further, the carrier separation dynamics is tailored by engineering the crystalline structure of the perovskite film, which leads to controllable emission properties. These results have important significance for the design of optoelectronic devices from solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and so forth.

Abstract:Organo-metal halide perovskite solar cells have shown remarkable progress in power conversion efficiencies in the past five years due to some amazing intrinsic properties such as long-range ambipolar transport characteristics, high dielectric constants, low exciton binding energies, and intrinsic ferroelectric polarizations. This review article discusses recent results with the focus on fundamental physics involved in internal photovoltaic processes in perovskite solar cells. The discussion includes charge transport, photoexcited carriers versus excitons, exciton binding energies, ferroelectric properties, and magnetic field effects. The objective of this review article is to provide the critical understanding for materials synthesis and device engineering to further advance photovoltaic actions in the state-of-the-art organo-metal halide perovskite solar cells.
Interface Engineering and Morphology Study of Thin Film Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Optoelectronic Devices

Abstract:Solar energy harvesting through photovoltaic conversion has gained great attention as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to meet the rapidly increasing global energy demand. Currently, the high cost of solar-cell technology limits its widespread use. This situation has generated considerable interest in developing alternative solar-cell technologies that reduce cost through the use of less expensive materials and processes. Perovskite solar cells provide a promising low-cost technology for harnessing this energy source. In Chapter two, a moisture-assist method is introduced and studied to facilitate grain growth of solution processed perovskite films. As an approach to achieve high-quality perovskite films, I anneal the precursor film in a humid environment (ambient air) to dramatically increase grain size, carrier mobility, and charge carrier lifetime, thus improving electrical and optical properties and enhancing photovoltaic performance. It is revealed that mild moisture has a positive effect on perovskite film formation, demonstrating perovskite solar cells with 17.1% power conversion efficiency. Later on, in Chapter four, an ultrathin flexible device delivering a PCE of 14.0% is introduced. The device is based on silver-mesh substrates exhibiting superior durability against mechanical bending.Due to their low energy of formation, organic lead iodide perovskites are also susceptible to degradation in moisture and air. The charge transport layer therefore plays a key role in protecting the perovskite photoactive layer from exposure to such environments, thus achieving highly stable perovskite-based photovoltaic cells. Although incorporating organic charge transport layers can provide high efficiencies and reduced hysteresis, concerns remain regarding device stability and the cost of fabrication. In this work, perovskite solar cells that have all solution-processed metal oxide charge transport layers were demonstrated. Stability has been significantly improved compared with cells made with organic layers. Degradation mechanisms were investigated and important guidelines were derived for future device design with a view to achieving both highly efficient and stable solar devices. Organometal halide based perovskite material has great optoelectronic proprieties, for example, shallow traps, benign grain boundaries and high diffusion length. The perovskite LEDs show pure electroluminescence (EL) with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM), which is an advantage for display, lighting or lasing applications. In chapter five, perovskite LEDs are demonstrated employing solution processed charge injection layers with a quantum efficiency of 1.16% with a very low driving voltage.

Abstract:Solution processable semiconductors like organics and emerging lead halide perovskites (LHPs) are ideal candidates for photovoltaics combining high performance and flexibility with reduced manufacturing cost. Moreover, the study of hybrid semiconductors would lead to advanced structures and deep understanding that will propel this field even further. Herein, we investigate a novel device architecture involving block copolymer/perovskite hybrid bulk heterointerfaces, such a modification could enhance light absorption, create an energy level cascade and provides a thin hydrophobic layer, thus enabling enhanced carrier generation, promoting energy transfer and preventing moisture invasion, respectively. The resulting hybrid block copolymer/perovskite solar cell exhibits a champion efficiency of 24.07% for 0.0725 cm2‐sized devices and 21.44% for 1 cm2‐sized devices, respectively, together with enhanced stability, which is among the highest reports of organic/perovskite hybrid devices. More importantly, this approach has been effectively extended to other LHPs with different chemical compositions like MAPbI3 and CsPbI3, which may shed light on the design of highly efficient block copolymer/perovskite hybrid materials and architectures that would overcome current limitations for realistic application exploration. Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have reached external quantum efficiencies of over 20% for various colours, showing great potential for display and lighting applications. Despite the internal quantum efficiencies of the best-performing devices already approaching unity, around 80% of the internally generated photons are trapped in the devices and lose energy through a variety of lossy channels. Significant opportunities for improving efficiency and maximizing photon extraction lie in the effective management of light. In this Review we analyse light management strategies based on the intrinsic optical properties of the perovskite materials and the extrinsic properties related to device structures. These approaches should allow the external quantum efficiencies of perovskite LEDs to substantially exceed the conventional limits of planar organic LED devices. By revisiting lessons learned from organic LEDs and perovskite solar cells, we highlight possible directions of future research towards perovskite LEDs with ultrahigh efficiencies.

Abstract:Optimizing the photovoltaic processes directly by electric technique attracts the exploration of molecular doping in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). However, the inappropriate and inhomogeneous dopant distribution in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film inhibits the performance improvement and mechanism understanding in doped OPVs. A strategy to solve these critical problems is reported here. By employing a planar heterojunction (PHJ) device structure, the role of dopant location and photovoltaic performance is clarified. Dopants tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) distributing at the heterojunction rather than in the single component (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo [1,2-b:4,5,b'] dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1 ',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7'- bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo [1',2' -c:4',5'-c] dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T) or 3,9-bis (2-methylene (3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)- indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)dithieno [2,3-d:2',3'-d]-s-indaceno [1,2-b:5,6-b'] dithiophene (ITIC)) produces the best performance with quantum efficiency (QE) enhancement. Mechanism studies reveal the facilitated exciton splitting and suppressed bimolecular recombination as the causes for device improvement. The sequential coating procedure is further developed for the doped BHJ cells, and the devices based on this method exhibit a short-circuit current (J(sc)) increase of 1.3 mA/cm(2), which is an impressive value compared with the previous reports.

Abstract:Perovskite single crystals have received enormous attention in recent years. This is, perhaps, due to their simplistic synthesis and excellent optoelectronic properties including the long carrier diffusion length, high carrier mobility, low trap density, and tuneable absorption edge ranging from ultra-violet to near-infrared. These distinguishing features offer numerous potential applications in energy-related fields like solar cells, photodetectors, lasers, etc. Efficiency enhancement and stability, in general, are the main challenges to obtaining better solar cells. One of the main reasons for the early degradation of solar cells is heat generation due to high energy electrons and holes in the conduction and valance bands. In this study, the authors try to introduce the concept of selective energy contacts in perovskite solar cells. Also, they investigate how this concept affects the power conversion efficiency (enhancement) and heat generation due to hot electrons and holes (reduction) scattering in the conduction and valance bands. Both efficiency enhancement and reduction in heat generation have been calculated in this study. Thus, for mathematical modeling of the anticipated idea, the Methylammonium lead halide (CH3NH3PbI3) material is used in a PIN structure for a single-junction solar cell. Also, for the proposed structure, analytical modeling was introduced and it is shown that the efficiency of a single contact cell is around 25%, and after applying the second contact, the efficiency was increased to 35%. Finally, due to the reduction of heat loss in the structure, the stability of perovskite material is significantly increased.
