Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:For any positive integer n, the famous pseudo Smarandache function Z(n) is defined as the smallest positive integer m such that n | m(m+1)/2. The number theory function D(n) is defined as the smallest positive integer m such that n divides d(1)d(2)…d(m), where d(n) is the Dirichlet divisor function. The main purpose of this paper is using the elementary method and the properties of the pseudo Smarandache function Z(n) and number theory function D(n) to study the solvability of the equation 2Z(n) = D(n), and obtain its all positive integer solutions.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Let A(n) be a $k\times s$ matrix and $m(n)$ be a $k$ dimensional vector, where all entries of A(n) and $m(n)$ are integer-valued polynomials in $n$. Suppose that $$t(m(n)|A(n))=#\{x\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{s}\mid A(n)x=m(n)\}$$ is finite for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, where $Z_+$ is the set of nonnegative integers. This paper conjectures that $t(m(n)|A(n))$ is an integer-valued quasi-polynomial in $n$ for $n$ sufficiently large and verifies the conjecture in several cases.

Abstract:Let ( P m ) m ≥0 be the sequence of Pell numbers given by P 0 = 0, P 1 = 1, and P m +2 = 2 P m +1 + P m for all m ≥ 0. In this paper, for an integer d ≥ 2 which is square free, we show that there is at most one value of the positive integer x participating in the Pell equation x 2 − dy 2 = ± 1, which is a product of two Pell numbers.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:Let $\ k$ be a natural number and $d=k^{2}\pm 4$ or $k^{2}\pm 1$. In this paper, by using continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{d},$ we find fundamental solution of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ and we get all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Moreover, we find all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 4$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Although some of the results are well known, we think our method is elementary and different from the others.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some new problems in additive combinatorics.Our problems mainly involve permutations (or circular permutations) n distinct numbers (or elements of an additive abelian group) a1,…,an with adjacent sums ai + ai+1 (or differences ai-ai+1) pairwise distinct.For an odd prime power q =2n + 1 ＞ 13 with q ≠ 25,we show that there is a circular permutation (a1,…,an) of the elements of S={a2 : a∈(F)q\{0}} such that {a1+a2,…,an-1+an,an+a1} =S,where (F)q denotes the field of order q.For any finite subset A of an additive torsion-free abelian group G with |A| =n ＞ 3,we prove that there is a numbering a1,…,an of the elements of A such that a1 + 2a2,a2 + 2a3,…,an-1 + 2an,an + 2a1 are pairwise distinct.We also pose 30 open conjectures for further research.

Abstract:We study new identities related to the sums of adjacent terms in the Pell sequence, defined by $P_{n} := 2P_{n-1}+P_{n-2}$ for $ n\geq 2$ and $P_{0}=0, P_{1}=1$, and generalize these identities for many similar sequences. We prove that the sum of $N>1$ consecutive Pell numbers is a fixed integer multiple of another Pell number if and only if $4\mid N$. We consider the generalized Pell $(k,i)$-numbers defined by $p(n) :=\ 2p(n-1)+p(n-k-1) $ for $n\geq k+1$, with $p(0)=p(1)=\cdots =p(i)=0$ and $p(i+1)=\cdots = p(k)=1$ for $0\leq i\leq k-1$, and prove that the sum of $N=2k+2$ consecutive terms is a fixed integer multiple of another term in the sequence. We also prove that for the generalized Pell $(k,k-1)$-numbers such a relation does not exist when $N$ and $k$ are odd. We give analogous results for the Fibonacci and other related second-order recursive sequences.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham proposed to determine the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s = 1$ and asked, among other things, whether that number could be as large as $2^{n - o(n)}$. We show that the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s \leq 1$ is smaller than $2^{0.93n}$.

Abstract:DefineDn(x)=∑k=0n(nk)2xk(x+1)n−kforn=0,1,2,… andsn(x)=∑k=1n1n(nk)(nk−1)xk−1(x+1)n−kforn=1,2,3,…. Then Dn(1) is the n-th central Delannoy number Dn, and sn(1) is the n-th little Schröder number sn. In this paper we obtain some surprising arithmetic properties of Dn(x) and sn(x). We show that1n∑k=0n−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)∈Z[x(x+1)]for alln=1,2,3,…. Moreover, for any odd prime p and p-adic integer x≢0,−1(modp), we establish the supercongruence∑k=0p−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)≡0(modp2). As an application we confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [S14a], in particular we prove that1n∑k=0n−1TkMk(−3)n−1−k∈Zfor alln=1,2,3,…, where Tk is the k-th central trinomial coefficient and Mk is the k-th Motzkin number.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a cycle permutation that can be expressed as one-line $\pi = \pi_1\pi_2 \cdot\cdot\cdot \pi_n$ and a cycle form $\pi = (c_1,c_2, ..., c_n)$. Archer et al. introduced the notion of pattern avoidance of one-line and all cycle forms for a cycle permutation $\pi$, defined as $\pi_1\pi_2 \cdot\cdot\cdot \pi_n$ and its arbitrary cycle form $c_ic_{i+1}\cdot\cdot\cdot c_nc_1c_2\cdot\cdot\cdot c_{i-1}$ avoid a given pattern. Let $\mathcal{A}^\circ_n(\sigma; \tau)$ denote the set of cyclic permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$ that avoid $\sigma$ in their one-line form and avoid $\tau$ in their all cycle forms. In this note, we prove that $|\mathcal{A}^\circ_n(2431; 1324)|$ is the $(n-1)^{\rm{st}}$ Pell number for any positive integer $n$. Thereby, we give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer et al.
