Abstract:Let $\ k$ be a natural number and $d=k^{2}\pm 4$ or $k^{2}\pm 1$. In this paper, by using continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{d},$ we find fundamental solution of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ and we get all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Moreover, we find all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 4$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Although some of the results are well known, we think our method is elementary and different from the others.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to find all positive integer solutions of the Pell equation \(x^{2}-dy^{2} = N\) in a specific form, where \(d\in\{k^{2}\pm4,k^{2}\pm1\}\) and \(N\in\{\pm1,\pm4\}\). Specifically: - **Research Background**: The Pell equation \(x^{2}-dy^{2}=N\) is an important class of Diophantine equations. When \(N = \pm1\), it is called the classical Pell equation. This type of equation has a wide range of applications in number theory. - **Core of the Problem**: - When \(d = k^{2}\pm4\) or \(d=k^{2}\pm1\), find all positive integer solutions of the equations \(x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm1\) and \(x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm4\). - Use the method of continued fraction expansion to solve these equations and express the solutions in the form of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. - **Main Contributions**: - Propose a new method based on continued fraction expansion to solve these equations, which is different from previous descent methods (such as Fermat's descent method). - Give the specific expressions of all positive integer solutions, especially the representation forms in the generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Through these studies, the author hopes to provide a simpler and different method to solve this class of Pell equations and provide new ideas and tools for subsequent research.
