Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract:The cardinality of the set of $D\leqslant x$ for which the fundamental solution of the Pell equation $t^{2}-Du^{2}=1$ is less than $D^{1/2+\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in [\frac{1}{2},1]$ is studied and certain lower bounds are obtained, improving previous results of Fouvry by introducing the $q$ -analogue of van der Corput method to algebraic exponential sums with smooth moduli.

Abstract:Using a recent breakthrough of Smith, we improve the results of Fouvry and Klüners on the solubility of the negative Pell equation. Let $\mathcal{D}$ denote the set of fundamental discriminants having no prime factors congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Stevenhagen conjectured that the density of $D$ in $\mathcal{D}$ such that the negative Pell equation $x^2-Dy^2=-1$ is solvable with $x,y\in\mathbb{Z}$ is $58.1\%$, to the nearest tenth of a percent. By studying the distribution of the $8$-rank of narrow class groups $\mathrm{CL}^+(D)$ of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, we prove that the infimum of this density is at least $53.8\%$.

Abstract:Pell-Abel equation is a functional equation of the form P^{2}-DQ^{2} = 1, with a given polynomial D free of squares and unknown polynomials P and Q. We show that the space of Pell-Abel equations with the fixed degrees of D and of a primitive solution P is a complex manifold. We describe its connected components by an efficiently computable invariant. Moreover, we give various applications of this result, including torsion pairs on hyperelliptic curves, Hurwitz spaces and the description of the connected components of the space of primitive k-differentials with a unique zero on genus 2 Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We prove that the simultaneous Pell equations{x2−24y2=1y2−pz2=1, where p is a prime, have positive integer solutions only in the cases of p=11 and p=2. Furthermore, the only solutions are (x,y,z,p)=(49,10,3,11) and (x,y,z,p)=(485,99,70,2).

Abstract:On the coordinate plane, the slopes $a,$ $b$ of two straight lines and the slope $c$ of one of their angle bisectors satisfy the equation $(a-c)^2(b^2+1) = (b-c)^2(a^2+1).$ Recently, an explicit formula for non-trivial integral solutions of this equation with solutions of negative Pell's equations was discovered by the author. In this article, for a given square-free integer $d > 1$ and a given integer $z > 1,$ we describe every integral solution $(x,y)$ of $|x^2-dy^2| = z$ such that $x,$ $dy$ are coprime by using the fundamental unit of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt d)$ and elements of $\mathbb Z[\sqrt d]$ whose absolute value of norms are the smallest prime powers. We also describe every non-trivial rational solution of the above equation as one of its applications.

Abstract:The so-called polynomial equations play an important role both in algebra and in the theory of functional equations. If the unknown functions in the equation are additive, relatively many results are known. However, even in this case, there are a lot of open questions. In some specific cases, according to classical results, the unknown additive functions are homomorphisms, derivations, or linear combinations of these. The question arises as to whether the solutions can be described even if the unknown functions are not assumed to be additive but to be generalized monomials. As a starting point, we will deal with quadratic functions in this paper. We aim to show that quadratic functions that are solutions to certain polynomial equations necessarily have a `special' form. Further, we also present a method to determine these special forms.

Abstract:Concerning quartics, two particular quantifier elimination (QE) problems of historical interests and practical values are studied. We solve the problems by the theory of complete discrimination systems and negative root discriminant sequences for polynomials that provide a method for real (positive/negative) and complex root classification for polynomials. The equivalent quantifier-free formulas are obtained mainly be hand and are simpler than those obtained automatically by previous methods or QE tools. Also, applications of the results to program verification and determination of positivity of symmetric polynomials are showed.

Abstract:Let $d\geq 2$ be a squarefree integer, let $\omega\in\{\sqrt{d},\frac{1+\sqrt{d}}{2}\}$ be such that $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ is the ring of algebraic integers of the real quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, let $\varepsilon>1$ be the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ and let $x$ and $y$ be the unique nonnegative integers with $\varepsilon=x+y\omega$. In this note, we extend and study the list of known squarefree integers $d\geq 2$, for which $y$ is divisible by $d$ (cf. OEIS A135735). As a byproduct, we present a counterexample to a conjecture of L. J. Mordell.

Coprime-Universal Quadratic Forms

Abstract:Given a prime $p>3$, we characterize positive-definite integral quadratic forms that are coprime-universal for $p$, i.e. representing all positive integers coprime to $p$. This generalizes the $290$-Theorem by Bhargava and Hanke and extends later works by Rouse ($p=2$) and De Benedetto and Rouse ($p=3$). When $p=5,23,29,31$, our results are conditional on the coprime-universality of specific ternary forms. We prove this assumption under GRH (for Dirichlet and modular $L$-functions), following a strategy introduced by Ono and Soundararajan, together with some more elementary techniques borrowed from Kaplansky and Bhargava. Finally, we discuss briefly the problem of representing all integers in an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:We give a criterion to determine the existence of the nontrivial integral solutions of the Fermat equation $x^3+y^3=kz^3$ over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ by constructing a relationship with the points on the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3-432d^3k^2$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:The aim of this expository article is twofold. The first is to introduce several polynomials of one variable as well as two variables defined on the positive integers with values as congruent numbers. The second is to present connections between Pythagorean triples and the Pell equation $x^2-dy^2=1$ plus its analogous counterpart $x^2-dy^2=-1$ which give rise to congruent numbers n with arbitrarily many prime factors.

Abstract:Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does there exist a quadratic form excepting only the elements of $S$?" Extending the techniques of Bhargava and Hanke, we answer this question for quaternary forms. In the process, we prove what Halmos could not; namely, that $x^2+2y^2+7z^2+13w^2$ represents all positive integers except $5$. We develop new strategies to handle forms of higher dimensions, yielding an enumeration of and proofs for the $73$ possible pairs that a classically integral positive definite quadratic form may except.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.

Abstract:Let ( P m ) m ≥0 be the sequence of Pell numbers given by P 0 = 0, P 1 = 1, and P m +2 = 2 P m +1 + P m for all m ≥ 0. In this paper, for an integer d ≥ 2 which is square free, we show that there is at most one value of the positive integer x participating in the Pell equation x 2 − dy 2 = ± 1, which is a product of two Pell numbers.

Abstract:By using algebraic number theory method and p-adic analysis method, we find all integral points on certain elliptic curvesy(2) = (x + a)(x(2) + bx + c), a,b,c is an element of Z, b(2) < 4c.Furthermore, we can find all integer solutions of certain hyperelliptic equationsDy-2 = Ax(4) + Bx(2) + C, B-2 < 4AC.As a particular example, we give a complete solution of the equation which was proposed by Zagiery(2) = x(3) - 9x + 28by this method. In Appendix I and Appendix II, we give the computational method of finding the fundamental unit and factorizing quadratic algebraic number in the subring of a totally complex quartic field, respectively.

Abstract:The real roots of the cubic and quartic polynomials are studied geometrically with the help of their respective Siebeck--Marden--Northshield equilateral triangle and regular tetrahedron. The Viète trigonometric formulae for the roots of the cubic are established through the rotation of the triangle by variation of the free term of the cubic. A very detailed complete root classification for the quartic $x^4 + ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d$ is proposed for which the conditions are imposed on the individual coefficients $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$. The maximum and minimum lengths of the interval containing the four real roots of the quartic are determined in terms of $a$ and $b$. The upper and lower root bounds for a quartic with four real roots are also found: no root can lie farther than $(\sqrt{3}/4)\sqrt{3a^2 - 8b}\, $ from $-a/4$. The real roots of the quartic are localized by finding intervals containing at most two roots. The end-points of these intervals depend on $a$ and $b$ and are roots of quadratic equations -- which makes this localization helpful for quartic equations with complicated parametric coefficients.

Abstract:We provide an estimate for the number of nontrivial integer points on the Pellian surface $t^2 - du^2 = 1$ in a bounded region. We give a lower bound on the size of fundamental solutions for almost all $d$ in a certain class, based on a recent conjecture of Browning and Wilsch about integer points on log K3 surfaces. We also obtain an upper bound on the average of class number in this class, assuming the same conjecture.
