Abstract:ABSTRACT Catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ODS) using titanium silicate catalysts has emerged as an efficient technique for the complete removal of organosulfur compounds from automotive fuels. However, the precise control of highly accessible and stable-framework Ti active sites remains highly challenging. Here we reveal for the first time by using density functional theory calculations that framework hexa-coordinated Ti (TiO6) species of mesoporous titanium silicates are the most active sites for ODS and lead to a lower-energy pathway of ODS. A novel method to achieve highly accessible and homogeneously distributed framework TiO6 active single sites at the mesoporous surface has been developed. Such surface framework TiO6 species exhibit an exceptional ODS performance. A removal of 920 ppm of benzothiophene is achieved at 60°C in 60 min, which is 1.67 times that of the best catalyst reported so far. For bulky molecules such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT), it takes only 3 min to remove 500 ppm of DMDBT at 60°C with our catalyst, which is five times faster than that with the current best catalyst. Such a catalyst can be easily upscaled and could be used for concrete industrial application in the ODS of bulky organosulfur compounds with minimized energy consumption and high reaction efficiency.

Abstract:A functionalized modified metal-organic framework material of T-MOF-808 was synthesized through hydrophobic modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and chlorotrimethylsilane (TMCS). Then a supported oxidative desulfurization catalyst [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808(s) was prepared by using heteropoly acid ionic liquid as the active component. The prepared samples was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, etc. [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808(s) was used in the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT). At the same time, the effects of different loadings of active component, oxygen sulfur ratios, reaction temperatures, and reaction time were also investigated. [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808-15%(s) could oxidize 100% of DBT in 40 min at 60 oC. Significantly, the catalyst exhibited no discernible decline in catalytic activity after 14 runs. In addition, the efficiency of sulfur removal was 85.76% in actual diesel oil. It was found that the cooperative impact of hydrophobic modification and electron transfer makes an important contribution to the high activity. The hydrophobic modification provides a novel approach for using MOF materials in the oxidative desulfurization process.

Abstract:The strongly coupled core‐shell heterostructure catalyst composed of the crystalline molybdenum phosphide core and the amorphous tungsten oxide shell is developed for efficient and selective oxidation of thiophenic sulfides in fuels. The superior catalytic performance results from the interfacial permeation effect of tungsten atoms and the surface oxidation pathway based on direct electron transfer. Heterogeneous interfaces designed rationally in catalysts can induce geometrical, compositional, and electronic effects that can be applied to modulate catalytically active sites and consequently accelerate reaction kinetics. Here, a core‐shell heterostructure catalyst consisting of crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP) cores and amorphous tungsten oxide (WOx) shells on porous carbon nanosheets (PCN) is developed for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuels. The strongly coupled core‐shell heterogeneous interface triggers a distinctive atomic permeation effect that induces substantial electron transfer from MoP to WOx and subsequent generation of electron‐rich W sites, consequently optimizing the adsorption of intermediates and substrates. The resulting catalyst (WOx@MoP/PCN) demonstrates a turnover frequency as high as 768.1 h−1 for ODS at 60 °C, exceeding that of almost all the state‐of‐the‐art ODS catalysts by 1–2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, a novel surface oxidation pathway based on direct electron transfer is identified in the WOx@MoP/PCN‐H2O2 system, which bypasses the formation of reactive oxygen species, consequently endowing the system with a moderate redox potential. Thus, WOx@MoP/PCN exhibits unprecedented selectivity, achieving 100% removal of thiophenic sulfides from real diesel with minimal consumption of oxidant.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts are usually constructed by immobilizing active species on appropriate supports. However, the dispersibility is difficult to precisely control. In this work, three representative Mo-based MOFs (Mo-MOFs) were constructed by assembling various organic linkers and MoO 3 , where the Mo atoms are homogeneously dispersed due to the coordination. The results illustrated that the obtained Mo-MOF-PI synthesized with 2-propyl imidazole as the ligands exhibited an extremely fast reaction rate, achieving 99.4% sulfur removal of DBT within only 12 min. Compared to other similar catalysts, Mo-MOF-PI showed much higher catalytic activity with a turnover frequency value of 19.2 h −1 . Moreover, it can be reused at least 20 times without a dramatic reduction in catalytic performance. Thus, the as-prepared Mo-MOF catalysts show great potential in large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:A dynamic model of insider trading with sequential auctions, structured to resemble a sequential equilibrium, is used to examine the informational content of prices, the liquidity characteristics of a speculative market, and the value of private information to an insider. The model has three kinds of traders: a single risk neutral insider, random noise traders, and competitive risk neutral market makers. The insider makes positive profits by exploiting his monopoly power optimally in a dynamic context, where noise trading provides camouflage which conceals his trading from market makers. As the time interval between auctions goes to zero, a limiting model of continuous trading is obtained. In this equilibrium, prices follow Brownian motion, the depth of the market is constant over time, and all private information is incorporated into prices by the end of trading.

Abstract:The combustion of sulfur-containing fossil fuels has led to excessive emissions of SOx, and the oxidative deep desulfurization of fuels has rapidly attracted the interest of researchers. The TS-1@TiO 2 -x support was fabricated via a simple titanium alkylation method, and the HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 catalyst was successfully obtained by impregnation of phosphotungstic acid (HPW) on the support. The characterization of the synthesized materials was conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance (UV-vis DRS), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N 2 adsorption–desorption. Characterization results showed that the catalyst remained the Keggin structure of HPW and the MFI structure of support, while also impressed the interaction between HPW and support. The catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts was investigated for the oxidative desulfurization of model oil, including thiophene (TH), benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT), with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. During the ODS process, loading amounts of TiO 2 , reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage, molar ratio of O and S were optimal to be 5%, 60 °C, 90 min, 0.06 g and 12:1, respectively. The conversion rates of three organic sulfides with different size (TH, BT and DBT) over HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 were 99.9%, 78.8% and 99.9%, respectively. Furthermore, a possible ODS reaction pathway over HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 is proposed.

Abstract:Catalysts play an important role in oxidative desulfurization, a promising process for producing cleaner fossil fuels for transport. A highly efficient catalyst, Q4-H2SeIV3W6, for the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) was reported in 2011. To comprehensively evaluate this catalyst and better understand its recovery, two types of the catalyst were prepared by impregnating Q4-H2SeIV3W6 on MCM-41 and functionalized MCM-41 materials. In the oxidative desulfurization process catalyzed by these supported catalysts, the conversion of DBT reached 98.7%. The catalytic activities were excellent when Q4-H2SeIV3W6 was impregnated on functionalized MCM-41. The results showed that the supported catalysts had excellent reusability. In addition, a mechanism for the catalytic oxidative desulfurization was proposed.

Abstract:The removal of thiophene-type sulfides in fuel oil still remains a significant challenge to achieve the production of sulfur-free diesel fuel. Herein, an ionic liquid-derived 3D meso/macroporous Mo/ZrO2 (m/M Mo/ZrO2) composite has been prepared by two steps self-assembling process using 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C16mim]Cl) and close-packed poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloidal crystal as dual-templates. The characterization results demonstrate the existence of interconnected 3D channels, with MoO3 active sites highly dispersed on the tetragonal ZrO2 framework. Moreover, the effects of pore structure, especially mesopores, on the reactivity of as-synthesized m/M Mo/ZrO2 catalyst have been investigated by the addition of different amount of [C16mim]Cl. As-fabricated 3D m/M Mo/ZrO2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity on dibenzothiophene (DBT) under mild reaction conditions. In addition, the 3D m/M Mo/ZrO2 catalyst demonstrates good cycle stability in the extractive-oxidative desulfurization process with no obvious decrease in activity after 7 cycles, which makes it a promising candidate for deep oxidative desulfurization.

Abstract:A novel polyoxometalate-based ionic liquid salt 3-(1-methylimidazolium-3-yl) propane-1-sulfonate phosphomolybdenum tungsten ([MIMPs]3PMo6W6O40) was designed, prepared, and used as a catalyst in oxidative desulfurization (ODS). The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, 1HNMR, XRD, XPS, TG-DTA, and Contact angle testing etc. The [MIMPs]3PMo6W6O40 shows high activity in dibenzothiophene (DBT) oxidative desulfurization, which can remove all the DBT in model oil with a low O/S molar ratio. The O/S molar ratio, reaction temperature, and different sulfur compounds were evaluated in detail. In addition, the catalyst still possesses high desulfurization efficiency in the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons. It is noteworthy that when the reaction temperature is 60 °C, the O/S molar ratio is 2.5, and the reaction time is 120 min, the catalyst exhibited excellent recycle lifetime of 33 times without significant decline of the activity. Furthermore, the content of sulfur compounds could also be reduced to 9 μg/g in real diesel.

Abstract:A series of hybrid catalyst @ZSM-5-MCM-41 was prepared in which H3PMo6W6O40 were supported in the pore of micro/mesoporous materials ZSM-5-MCM-41 and HKUST-1 by one-pot method. Five types of ZSM-5-MCM-41 were prepared and corresponding ODS catalysts @ZSM-5-MCM-41 were synthesized. The prepared catalysts were characterized and the most efficient catalyst was selected by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM. The removal of DBT reached 98.13 % by using @ZSM-5-MCM-41−2 under 60 °C with molecular oxygen as oxidant after 150 min. After desulfurization, the catalyst can be simply recovered and reused 7 times with an unnoticeable decrease in catalytic activity, indicating the successful combination of heteropolyacids and micro/mesoporous materials for desulfurization.

Abstract:Photocatalytic aerobic oxidation desulfurization (PAODS) is a promising and sustainable alternative to conventional, energy-intensive desulfurization techniques for petroleum products. However, its development is greatly plagued by the low capability in generating highly reactive oxygen species and sluggish kinetics of sulfide oxidation of reported photocatalysts. Here we report a class of MoOx nanocluster decorated on ultrathin Mo-doped TiO2 nanosheet (MoOx/MoTiO) catalyst for efficiently facilitating the photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of sulfides. We demonstrate that MoOx/MoTiO can not only promote the generation of highly reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) but also enhance the aerobic conversion of sulfides, which leads to a record dibenzothiophene oxidation activity of 3.90 mmol g−1 h−1. The multiple experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations collectively reveal that the doped-Mo sites can interact with the photogenerated excitons, enabling directly energy transfer generation of 1O2 through a new exciton modulation mechanism, and the coordination unsaturated MoOx clusters play the role of co-catalyst to enhance the separation of charge carriers, and effectively catalyze the reaction between sulfides and 1O2 to form sulfones.
Catalysts Based on Acidic SBA-15 for Deep Oxidative Desulfurization of Model Fuels

Abstract:Acidic SBA-15 modified by molybdenum oxide has been synthesized. These materials were characterized by low nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, NMR, and XRD techniques. In this work, the activity of acidic Al-SBA-15 modified with molybdenum oxide in the oxidation of sulfur-containing compounds was investigated for the first time. It was shown that the SBA-15 support containing aluminum allows to significantly increase the catalytic activity of molybdenum oxide. The main factors affecting the process consisting of catalyst dosage, temperature, reaction time, oxidant dosage were investigated in detail. In the presence of synthesized catalysts, dibenzothiophene can be completely oxidized in 30 min. These catalysts retain their activity in DBT oxidation for 10 cycles.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Ti-containing porous materials are extensively studied in liquid-phase oxidative desulfurization (ODS) to obtain low-sulphur fuel, these materials displayed excellent ODS performance co-operating with organic oxidants but relatively poor ability with H2O2, which is a green and cheap oxidant widely used in industrial process. To overcome this challenge, we reported a H2O2 compatible ODS catalyst Ti-MIL-101 by treating MIL-101 with TiCl4 in dehydrated CH2Cl2. The results of N2-absorption, UV–vis, IR and XPS indicated that Ti species were mainly confined in mesopore cages of MIL-101 in the form of isolated and oligomeric octahedral Ti which were grafted to Cr centres of MIL-101 by Cl bridge. Moreover, wettability studies further suggested this catalyst possessed good affinity with water-based substance. As a result, Ti-MIL-101 exhibited efficient ODS ability in the oxidative reaction of DBT with H2O2 compared with that with organic oxidant. In model fuel, sulphur content was reduced to less than 10 ppmw from 1000 ppmw within 30 min at 333 K and the corresponding TOF value over Ti-MIL-101 reached 16.8 h−1. This outstanding catalytic ability might be the result of the synergy between the distinct active Ti species and the good surface affinity of Ti-MIL-101.Graphical abstractTi-containing metal–organic frameworks were prepared for oxidative desulfurization of obstinate sulphur compounds with H2O2. Abstract:Aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) has attracted significant attention due to the utilization of environmentally friendly and safe O 2 as an oxidizing agent. However, it is still a great challenge to design metal-free catalysts that activate O 2 effectively at low temperature. In this study, a triazine-based covalent organic polymer (MC-TCOP) was prepared through thermal condensation reaction, and the basic characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed by different characterization methods. The MC-TCOP was applied into the AODS reaction, and the catalytic performance reached to 99.6% under mild reaction conditions (T = 50 °C, t = 150 min, gas flow = 90 mL/min, catalyst dosage = 0.04 g). Theoretical calculation showed O 2 and dibenzothiophene (DBT) were co-adsorbed on the active sites of the catalyst, and the reaction mechanism indicated the O 2 was activated into •O 2 − (by the charge difference between the nitrogen and carbon atoms), then the DBT was oxidized to corresponding sulphone. Moreover, reusability experiment confirmed the catalyst performance was still higher than 95% after 9 times of reusing. The MC-TCOP can be used as a metal-free and eco-friendly catalyst in AODS reaction.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) are good catalyst candidates for oxidation desulfurization (ODS) reaction, and its excellent dispersion in carriers could exert great influence on its catalytic performance. However, improving its catalytic activity still remains challenging. Herein, the amorphous molybdenum oxide (MoO x ) was synthesized as the active sites for ODS reaction. Via a facile adsorption-pyrolysis approach, the amorphous MoO x was dispersedly immobilized onto N-doped carbon layer (NC)-encapsulated SiO 2 using zinc pyridine porphyrin (ZnTPyP) and phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 )-modified SiO 2 nanocomposites as precursor, obtaining the MoO x @NC@SiO 2 catalyst. Owing to the wonderful pre-dispersion of Mo sources on the precursor leaded by the electrostatic interaction and spacial effect, the confinement effect of the derived carbon matrix, and the strong Mo-N bonds, the growth of MoO x crystal could be inhibited in pyrolysis procedure, ensuring the amorphous structure and good dispersion of MoO x species on SiO 2 . The as-prepared MoO x @NC@SiO 2 exhibits excellent oxidation desulfurization (ODS) performances, and could promote the complete oxidation of DBT in model fuel into DBTO 2 at the theoretical O/S molar ratio of 2, due to the perfect activation of all oxygen atoms of H 2 O 2 by the amorphous MoO x . In addition, a plausible ODS mechanism over MoO x @NC@SiO 2 is depicted to be the •OH radicals. Moreover, MoO x @NC@SiO 2 still displays an outstanding reusability over at least 10 cycles owing to the encapsulation of NC layers and the strong Mo-N bonds. Therefore, this work provides a promising catalyst for industrial ODS application, and opens up a new avenue for developing the amorphous TMOs catalysts.

Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization by Nanoporous Tungsten Oxide with Oxygen Defects

Abstract:Alkyl-substituted dibenzothiophenes such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene are a kind of typical refractory sulfur compound in fuel oil. Herein, three-dimensional ordered macro–mesoporous (3DOM) tungsten oxide catalysts were successfully prepared for aerobic oxidative desulfurization of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene. The experimental results indicated that the as-prepared material 3DOM WOx-400 not only contained a hexagonal packed nanoporous structure but also abundant oxygen defects on its skeleton, exhibiting aerobic oxidative desulfurization of over 99% in 4 h. Moreover, sulfur removal could still reach 99% after recycling five times. Through free radical capture experiments, the superoxide radical is reasonably proposed in the mechanism. Abstract:Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a promising technique for obtaining clean fuel. Designing and researching zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) with bimetallic catalytic sites are encouraging for its further development. In this study, Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was successfully synthesized through anchoring Cu+ in MOF-808. Pyridine infrared spectrum (Py-IR) and NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) confirmed that Lewis (L) acid sites existed in the synthesized material. Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was applied into the ODS reaction, during the reaction process, L acid sites adsorbed sulfide, Cu+ sustainably provided electron to H2O2 to formed into •OH, with the synergistic effect of L acid sites and Cu+, 99.9 % of the dibenzothiophene was oxidated to dibenzothiophene sulfone in 120 min. In addition, the cyclic experiment indicated that the ODS performance of Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was maintained at 99.2 % after 12 times recycling. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) spectra indicated the framework structure of the reused catalyst was stable, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) result displayed no metal ions (Zr, Cu) leaching after the ODS reaction, which also proved the catalytic stability of the Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808.

Abstract:Oxidative desulfurization (ODS), as a novel desulfurization technique of fuel oil, possesses high desulfurization efficiency for aromatic sulfide and low cost, making it a promising approach. The key to the technology lies in the rational design of catalysts with high activity and stability. Polyoxometalates, which are environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and abundantly available, face constraints in the development of ODS applications due to their low specific surface area and difficulty in regeneration. Introducing metal oxides into carriers with large specific surface areas to obtain heterogeneous catalysts is an effective solution to this problem. Beta zeolites, with regular three-dimensional channel systems, large specific surface area, and superior thermal/hydrothermal stability, are usually used as carriers. In this work, we developed a strategy to enhance zeolite carrier utilization efficiency by introducing Ta5+ species into the rigid framework of zeolites containing confined MoO3. The Ta species in the zeolite framework and the confined MoO3 produce a synergistic effect, exhibiting extremely high catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidative desulfurization of various organic aromatic sulfur compounds under mild conditions (90 °C and atmospheric pressure) in a deep eutectic solvent, surpassing common heterogeneous catalysts for oxidative desulfurization. Moreover, it can resist the adverse effects of interferents, such as naphthalene and indole. Additionally, the confined nature of Beta zeolite endows it with exceptional stability, demonstrating distinctive recyclability.
