Abstract:The study of heavy vehicles rollover prediction, especially in algorithm-based heavy vehicles active safety control for improving road handling, is a challenging task for the heavy vehicle industry. Due to the high fatality rate caused by vehicle rollover, how to precisely and effectively predict the rollover of heavy vehicles became a hot topic in both academia and industry. Because of the strong non-linear characteristics of Human-Vehicle-Road interaction and the uncertainty of modeling, the traditional deterministic method cannot predict the rollover hazard of heavy vehicles accurately. To deal with the above issues, this paper applies a probability method of uncertainty to the design of a dynamic rollover prediction algorithm for heavy vehicles and proposes a novel algorithm for predicting the rollover hazard based on the combined empirical model of reliability index and failure probability. Moreover, the paper establishes a classification model of heavy vehicles based on the support vector machine (SVM) and uses the Monte Carlo method to calculate the failure probability of rollover limit state of heavy vehicles. The fishhook, double lane change, and slalom maneuver tests of heavy vehicles are used to predict and validate the proposed algorithm in real-time. The simulation results show that the rollover prediction method based on failure probability is accurate and real-time, and can effectively improve the rollover prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, the proposed approach reduces the external interference of strong non-linear characteristics of Human-Vehicle-Road interaction and the uncertainty of the modeling to the system, thus significantly improving the prediction accuracy of active safety performance of heavy vehicles.

Abstract:Considering the fault tolerance of EMB (Electro-Mechanical-Brake) braking failure and anti-rollover control at the same time is one of the urgent problems to be solved in the driving safety of X-by-wire vehicles. Accurate rollover index is a key part of anti-rollover control. Aiming at the problem that the traditional rollover index reflects that the unsprung mass of the vehicle is insufficiently affected by road excitation, a tripped vehicle rollover dynamic model is established based on single-wheel braking failure, and a rollover evaluation index NLTR (New Load-Transfer-Rate) suitable for braking failure is proposed. In order to improve the lateral safety of the vehicle when the line control fails, a hierarchical anti-rollover controller based on road adhesion coefficient identification, SM-ABS (Sliding-Mode-ABS) control and DBR (Differential-Braking-Redistribution) control is designed. Taking the rollover index threshold as the controller trigger condition, the controller effects under NLTR, traditional RI2 and standard LTR indicators are compared respectively. Simulation and HIL test show that the traditional index controller has failure risk under extreme conditions. The designed NLTR index controller can accurately evaluate the rollover risk of the vehicle, control the vehicle in time, and improve the vehicle stability by 68.18% under Fish-Hook condition.

Abstract:In the field of heavy vehicle stability research, traditional safety requirements are often based on static scenario settings. However, the complexity and variability of actual road environments require safety control strategies that can be adapted to different driving conditions and environmental changes in real-time. To address this challenge, the paper proposes a coordinated control strategy for yaw and roll stability that considers the dynamic safety requirements. First, a quantitative analysis method for vehicle stability is proposed based on the dissipated energy theory, taking into account the lateral-vertical dynamics coupling characteristics. Additionally, a dynamic safety requirements identification model is developed by integrating the vehicle's future driving risk prediction algorithm. To meet dynamic safety requirements, a dynamic weight model predictive control method based on randomized ensembled double Q-learning reinforcement learning is designed. This method adjusts the control weights of yaw and roll stability online to flexibly address various destabilization risks, aiming to achieve more precise and efficient stability control. Through simulation and experimental verification, the results demonstrate that the proposed coordinated control strategy can effectively enhance the stability and safety of heavy vehicles in complex and dynamic driving environments.

Abstract:Although the probability of a rollover accident is lower than that of other forms of collision, rollover is a serious accident that can break the symmetry of the vehicle and cause serious loss of life and property. There are many factors affecting rollovers, such as the environment, the vehicle, and the driving control. A coach comprises a complex dynamic system; as such, the accuracy and rationality of the used mathematical model are decisive in the study of coach rollover warning and control. By analogy with the modeling method of an automobile collision accident, the general process of a coach rollover accident is analyzed in this study in combination with the contact form and freedom of motion characteristic of the coach body and external environment. According to the principle of conservation of energy, the mathematical models of critical rollover impact force in a collision between vehicles and obstacles and in a collision between two vehicles are established, allowing for analysis of the relationships between the critical tripped rollover impact forces required for a 90° rollover and the continuous action time and collision point height. During the collision between the vehicle and the obstacle, the occurrence of a vehicle rollover is related not only to the impact force in the collision process but also to the collision duration time. Even if the impact force is relatively small, the collision lasts long enough that a second collision may occur until the vehicle rolls over. In the process of a two-vehicle collision, the critical rollover impact force is not only related to the vehicle mass but also to the vehicle wheelbase and the height of the collision point. Based on the law of conservation of momentum, the mathematic models of 90-degree rollover and 180-degree rollover are established, and the critical rollover velocities are calculated. The purpose of this study is to provide reference and guidance for the research methods of vehicle rollover stability and anti-rollover control in the intelligent vehicle era.

Rollover prevention control for a four in-wheel motors drive electric vehicle on an uneven road

Abstract:When a four in-wheel motors drive electric vehicle with a specific wheels mass is running on an uneven road and transient steering occurs in the meantime, the joint action of the large unsprung dynamic load and the centrifugal force may cause the vehicle to rollover. To avoid the above accident, a rollover prevention control method based on active distribution of the in-wheel motors driving torques is investigated. First, the rollover evolution process of the four in-wheel motors drive electric vehicle under the described operating condition is analyzed. Next, a multiple degrees of freedom vehicle dynamics model including an uneven road tyre model is established, and the rollover warning threshold is determined according to the load transfer ratio. Then, the hypothesis of the effects of unsprung mass on the vehicle roll stability on a plat road and on an uneven road is verified respectively. Finally, a rollover prevention controller is designed based on the distribution of the four wheels driving torques with sliding mode control, and the control effect is verified by simulations. The conclusion shows that, once the wheels mass does not match road conditions, the large unsprung mass may play a detrimental role on the vehicle roll stability on an uneven road, which is different from the beneficial role of large unsprung mass on the vehicle roll stability on a plat road. With the aforementioned rollover prevention controller, the vehicle rollover, which is caused by the coupling effect between large unsprung dynamic load and suspension potential energy on an uneven road, can be avoided effectively.

The integrated anti-rollover control is performed on the Active suspension system and the multi-axle steering system. Firstly, establish an eleven-degree-of-freedom coupled dynamic model for the vehicle; Secondly, the H∞/generalized H2 output feedback controller for Active suspension is designed, and the multi-axle steering LQR controller is designed; The upper level coordinated fuzzy controller is designed again, and the integrated control strategy of anti-rollover is used to integrate the Active suspension system and the multi-axle steering system. The test results show that, compared with the uncontrolled vehicle, the root mean square value of the lateral load transfer rate of the vehicle under integrated control decreased by 14.3%, 12%, and 10.9%; the root mean square values of lateral acceleration decreased by 26.8%, 22.8%, and 27.4%, respectively; the root mean square values of roll angle decreased by 27.7%, 25.2%, and 29.1%, respectively; respectively in the three-vehicle tests, and the proposed integrated control strategy for rollover prevention effectively improved the rollover prevention ability of emergency rescue vehicles.

Abstract:Although the incidence of mini-bus rollover accidents is not very high, the fatality rate in such accidents is very high. A multi-body dynamics model was developed to analyze mini-bus dynamics and sharp turn stability. The relationships between the steering wheel angle, lateral acceleration, and tire vertical force were obtained using the J-turn and fish-hook virtual tests. Analysis of the mini-bus rollover shows that the maximum lateral acceleration for which rollover will not occur is 1.0 g for these two simulation conditions. The influences of mini-bus structure, traffic conditions, and external conditions on the rollover tendency were also analyzed in single-factor experiments. The results show that the road adhesion coefficient is the most important parameter with the vehicle's center of gravity and other parameters also having some influence on the rollover tendency. These results can be used to improve mini-bus redesigns, improve risk prediction, and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

Abstract:Due to the high centre of mass, commercial vehicles are prone to ultimate rollover under extreme steering conditions. The rollover of commercial vehicles leads to serious traffic accidents and poses a threat to road traffic. In this paper, the mechanism of vehicle rollover is revealed by static equilibrium and phase plane analysis. Meanwhile, a robust roll angle observer is designed by combining Kalman filter and sliding mode observation. Considering the influence of wheel lifting on roll dynamics, a novel layered control strategy is proposed by employing engine torque limit, differential braking and active front-wheel steering. Moreover, the layered control of roll stability is realised by adaptive model predictive control with time-varying weights and constraints. To verify the validity and reliability of the proposed algorithm, the hardware-in-loop tests under typical driving conditions have been carried out. The results show that the proposed method can effectively restrain the divergence of roll state and prevent vehicle rollover.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of driving stability under high speed condition for electric vehicle,the electric vehicle which can be steered and drived / braked independently for each tire were researched. A tire force optimal allocation control strategy was proposed to improve vehicle stability under ultimate driving condition. Firstly,the desire value of yaw rate and slip angle of the vehicle were calculated according to driver' s steering,driving / braking based on two degrees freedom vehicle model. Then the errors between actual value and desire value of yaw rate and slip angle were figured out by compare them. The total longitude force,total lateral force and yaw moment of the vehicle were calculated via sliding mode control based on the errors. At the last,the longitude force and lateral force were figured out by optimal allocation method based on an eight-degree freedom vehicle model. The control strategy was validated by co-simulation of vehicle dynamic software Car Sim and Simulink. The results indicate that under the condition of high speed and large steering angle,the stability control strategy could keep yaw rate and slip angle of vehicle close to the desire value,which improves vehicle stability under extreme condition obviously.
Improved Design Of Generalized Dynamic Rollover Threshold Of Multi-Axial Vehicle

Abstract:This paper aims at proposing an improved generalized dynamic rollover threshold of multi-axial vehicles based on lateral load transfer ratio (LTR) and providing the foundation for rollover prediction. The study is carried out by utilizing vehicle handling dynamics to build a vehicle rollover model, which takes into account the characteristics of suspension and limit equilibrium of tires' lifting-off. We developed a real-time rollover warning platform to dynamically indicate the vehicle rollover trend and compare our generalized threshold with two other common used thresholds, not only on TruckSim platform with simulation vehicle, but also on the rollover warning platform with test vehicle. Results show that on TruckSim platform, the proposed LTR is much closer to the defined LTR, especially when facing rollover, it's much more sensitive and accurate in indicating impending danger of rollover; on the rollover warning platform, three LTRs have similar trends, while the proposed LTR performs better in predicting rollover.

Abstract:Due to its intricate operational environment, substantial mass, and elevated center of mass, the three-axle emergency rescue vehicle is more prone to rollover. This study aims to enhance the operational stability and mitigate rollover risks by establishing a rollover dynamic model with 11 degrees of freedom. Using the coupling characteristics of vehicle dynamics and tire force, an anti-rollover control strategy of the three-axle vehicle based on the cooperative work of differential braking and active suspension is proposed. According to the vehicle motion characteristics, the active suspension controller is built by using a fuzzy PID algorithm, and the differential braking controller is built by using the improved adaptive model predictive control algorithm. The step and fishhook tests of differential braking, active suspension control and joint control are carried out respectively. The simulation results show that the joint control strategy can effectively reduce the rollover tendency of the vehicle, and further improve the anti-rollover ability of the vehicle compared with the single system control.

Abstract:The rollover evaluation index provides an important threshold basis for the anti-rollover control system of vehicle. Regarding the rollover risk of independently driven heavy-duty vehicles, a new rollover evaluation index is proposed, and the feasibility of the improved index was verified through hierarchical control and HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) experiments. Based on an 18-DOF spatial dynamics model of a heavy-duty vehicle, the improved LTR (load transfer rate) index was obtained to describe the dynamic change in the tire's vertical load. It replaces the suspension force and the vertical inertia force of the unsprung load mass. It avoids the problem of directly measuring or estimating the vertical load in the LTR index. Under the conditions of fishhooking and angle stepping, three types of rollover indicators were compared, and the proposed index can more sensitively identify the likelihood of rollover. In order to apply the improved rollover index to a rollover control well, a hierarchical controller based on the identification of the slip rate of the road surface, ABS control with sliding mode, variable structure and differential braking was designed. Simulations and HIL tests proved that the designed controller can accurately predict the rollover risk and avoid the rollover in time. Under the condition of J-turning, the yaw rate, slip angle and maximum lateral acceleration are reduced by 9%, 16% and 3%, respectively; under the condition of fishhooking, the maximum yaw rate, slip angle and lateral acceleration are reduced by 12%, 18% and 3%, respectively.

Abstract:Sharp steering-braking at a high speed exposes sport utility vehicles with high gravity centers and narrow wheel tracks to the risks of tire locking, sideslip and rollover. To avoid these risks and ensure braking safety, yaw stability and roll stability upon steering-braking, a braking-yaw-roll stability integrated control strategy was proposed, which consists of a supervisor, an upper and a lower controller for the front and rear axle independent drive electric vehicle. In the supervisor, a nonlinear vehicle predictive model was constructed and four control modes were proposed according to the vehicle status and rollover indexes. The weight coefficients between braking force, yaw stability and roll stability are determined dynamically by the control mode and output to the upper controller. The upper controller used a nonlinear model predictive control to determine the longitudinal braking force distribution of the four wheels. And in the lower controller, the regenerative braking torque and friction braking torque of each wheel were distributed. Finally, simulation verifications were carried out on the high and low adhesion roads. The results show that the control strategy proposed in this study can effectively prevent the vehicle from rollover while ensuring braking safety and yaw stability.

Abstract:It is very necessary for an intelligent heavy truck to have the ability to prevent rollover independently. However, it was rarely considered in intelligent vehicle motion planning. To improve rollover stability, a motion planning strategy with autonomous anti rollover ability for an intelligent heavy truck is put forward in this paper. Considering the influence of unsprung mass in the front axle and the rear axle and the body roll stiffness on vehicle rollover stability, a rollover dynamics model is built for the intelligent heavy truck. From the model, a novel rollover index is derived to evaluate vehicle rollover risk accurately, and a model predictive control algorithm is applicated to design the motion planning strategy for the intelligent heavy truck, which integrates the vehicle rollover stability, the artificial potential field for the obstacle avoidance, the path tracking and vehicle dynamics constrains. Then, the optimal path is obtained to meet the requirements that the intelligent heavy truck can avoid obstacles and drive stably without rollover. In addition, three typical scenarios are designed to numerically simulate the dynamic performance of the intelligent heavy truck. The results show that the proposed motion planning strategy can avoid collisions and improve vehicle rollover stability effectively even under the worst driving scenarios.

Abstract:The automotive industries currently face challenges such as emission limits, traffic congestion, and limited parking, which have prompted shifts in consumer preferences and modern passenger vehicle requirements towards compact vehicles. However, given the inherent limited width of compact vehicles, the potential risk of vehicle rollover is greater than that of regular vehicles. This paper addresses the safety concerns associated with vehicle rollover, focusing on narrow tilting vehicles (NTVs). Quantifying stability involves numerical indicators such as the lateral load transfer ratio (LTR). Additionally, a unique approach is taken by applying ZMP (zero moment point), commonly used in the robotics field, as an indicator of vehicle stability. Effective roll control requires a detailed analysis of the vehicle's characteristic model and the derivation of lateral and roll dynamics. The paper presents the detailed roll dynamics of an NTV with a MacPherson strut-type suspension. A stability-enhancing method is proposed using a cascade structure based on the internal robust position controller and outer roll stability controller, addressing challenges posed by disturbances. Experimental verification using Simscape Multibody and CarSim validates the dynamic model and controller's effectiveness, ensuring the reliability of the proposed tilting control for NTVs in practical scenarios.

Abstract:Aiming at the instability problem of a four-wheel independent drive electric bus under high-speed conditions, this paper first designs a vehicle yaw stability controller based on a linear two-degree-of-freedom model and a linear quadratic programming (LQR) algorithm. A vehicle roll stability controller is then designed based on a linear three-degree-of-freedom model and a model predictive control algorithm (MPC). Moreover, a coordinated control rule based on the lateral load transfer rate (LTR) is designed for the coupled problem of yaw and roll dynamics. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is verified by simulation. The obtained results show that when the vehicle is running at a high speed of 90 km/h, the stability control algorithm can control the yaw rate tracking error within 0.05 rad/s. In addition, the control algorithm can reduce the maximum amplitude of the side slip angle, the maximum value of the roll angle, the maximum value of the roll angular velocity, and the amplitude of the lateral acceleration by more than 96%, 81.1%, 65.0%, and 11.1%, respectively.

Abstract:Vehicle rollover represents one of the most dangerous traffic accidents in the world. To improve the antirollover capability of a vehicle, we established an improved rollover model with a particular focus on the effects of independent suspensions and the lateral deformation of the tire. Based on this model, we further developed a new method to mitigate the rollover occurrence by adjusting the stiffness of the spring and the damping coefficient of the damper. Through simulation tests with a brand of SUV, we demonstrated that these adjustments improved the mitigation control as evidenced by better confined steady value and decreased overshoot of the roll angle.
