Abstract:This research aims to explain whether leader perfectionism toward employees fosters or hinders employee creativity. From a self-regulation perspective, we theorize that depending on employees' locus of control, leader perfectionism can influence two regulatory states of employees (i.e., engagement and emotional exhaustion) linearly or curvilinearly, which in turn affect their creativity in opposite directions. In a lab experiment and a multisource, multiwave field study, we found that for internals, leader perfectionism had a curvilinear effect on their engagement (but no effect on emotional exhaustion) and subsequent creativity such that the effect was positive but became weaker when leader perfectionism was extreme. By contrast, we found partial support across the two studies that for externals, leader perfectionism had a positive effect on their emotional exhaustion (but no effect on engagement), which undermined their creativity. We discuss the theoretical contributions of this research and its practical implications for organizations.

Creativity is Allowing for Failures: Leader Failure Tolerance and Employee Creativity

Abstract:The creative process is inherently risky and prone to failure. To promote creativity, scholars and practitioners have advocated the importance of having team leaders who are tolerant of employees’ failures in creative activities. However, creativity research thus far has not explicitly examined the role of leader failure tolerance. To address this knowledge void, from the systems view of creativity we examine a cognitive mechanism known as bisociation, through which leader failure tolerance may influence the production of novel and useful ideas. We also examine the joint effects of leader failure tolerance and individual differences in goal orientation on creativity through bisociation. To achieve our research goal, we first develop and validate a measure of leader failure tolerance using two independent samples. Then, we test the hypothesized relationships using a sample of 210 research and development (R&D) teams comprising 632 employees. Results show that leader failure tolerance positively relates to employee creativity through bisociation. Furthermore, when leader failure tolerance is high, performance-proving goal orientation has a positive indirect effect on creativity via bisociation, while performance-avoiding goal orientation has a negative indirect effect on creativity via bisociation. Taken together, these insights have important implications for managers charged with delivering creativity.

Abstract:In the quest to get the best from those for whom they are responsible, some parents and managers seek or demand perfection. But do such expectations benefit the targets, in terms of their capacity for creativity? The present research examines how perfectionistic parental and supervisor expectations influence employees’ fear of failure and creativity; in particular, the authors propose that perfectionistic parental expectations promote a fear of failure, which undermines employee creativity later in life. In line with social cognitive theory, when perfectionistic supervisor expectations repeat and reinforce these early life experiences, the negative mechanism may be strengthened. Tests of the hypotheses rely on two time-lagged field studies in different cultures (214 U.S. employees, 276 supervisor–employee–parent triads from a Chinese organization) and show that the indirect effect of parents’ perfectionistic expectations on creativity, through fear of failure, is stronger when perfectionistic supervisor expectations are high. This study thus offers unique insights into how familial and work experiences can jointly affect a person’s fear of failure and further creativity at work.
Facilitator or Barrier? the Double-Edged Effects of Leader Perfectionism on Employee Innovation Behavior

Abstract:Although there have been studies in the past that have highlighted the important role of leader traits in motivating employee innovation behavior, leader perfectionism has been scarcely investigated in this context. This study attempts to explore whether leader perfectionism directed toward employees can facilitate or hinder employee innovation behavior. Based on the transactional model of stress, we propose and test a moderated mediation model using data from a multi-wave, multi-source survey of 334 leader-employee questionnaires. The results show that, for employees with high self-efficacy, leader perfectionism has a positive effect on their challenge stress, which in turn promotes employee innovation behavior; Meanwhile, for employees with low self-efficacy, leader perfectionism has a positive effect on their hindrance stress, thereby discouraging employee innovation behavior. This study has significant theoretical and practical implications as it highlights the underlying relationship between leader perfectionism and employee innovation behavior.

Abstract:Research on leadership has long hinted that followers benefit when they work under a creative leader. Drawing upon dominance complementarity theory, we developed and tested a model in which leader creativity undermines rather than facilitates follower creativity. Specifically, we propose leader creativity promotes follower dependency on the leader, which in turn reduces the likelihood of followers engaging in creative work. Moreover, this indirect inhibiting effect is particularly stronger for male than for female leaders because creativity of male leaders is more likely to stimulate follower dependency. Paired data from 98 leaders and 549 followers supported our hypotheses and implications were discussed.

Abstract:Drawing on social cognitive theory, the study focused on the influence of the leader's creativity on the employees' creativity in organizational settings, and further incorporated Leader Member Exchange Relationship (LMX) and authoritarian leadership as situational factors to track their interaction effect on employees' creativity. We conducted two studies using two different samples of leader-subordinate dyads in China to test our assumptions. The findings showed: (1) the presence of the leader's creativity had a positive association with the employees' creativity; (2) authoritarian leadership can positively moderate this relationship; (3) LMX interacted with the joint condition to affect employees' creativity - more specifically, the effect of the leader's creativity on the employees is stronger when LMX is high and authoritarian leadership is high than when LMX is high and authoritarian leadership is low; the effect of the leader's creativity on the employees is stronger when LMX is low and authoritarian leadership is low than when LMX is low and authoritarian leadership is high. In the end, the limitation and implication are discussed.

From an interpersonal relationship perspective, based on interpersonal complementarity theory, this study proposes a link between leader perfectionism and employee deviant behavior while assessing the mediating impact of supervisor-subordinate relationship conflict, and the moderating influence of employee narcissism. Methods: This study employed three-wave surveys, with 335 employees (female 55.8%, 26– 35 years old 67.4%, bachelor's degree 61.5%, worked 3– 10 years 67.4%, worked with their current leader 1– 5 years 66.3%) across 11 enterprises in Chinato reduce the risk of common method bias. On this basis, MPLUS 7.4 was used to test the confirmatory factor analysis of data, and SPSS 24.0 was used to test the hypotheses. Results: (1) Leader perfectionism has a positive effect on supervisor-subordinate relationship conflict. (2) Leader perfectionism has a significantly positive effect on employee deviant behavior via supervisor-subordinate relationship conflict. (3) Employee narcissism positively moderates the relationship between leader perfectionism and supervisor-subordinate relationship conflict, and further positively moderates the indirect effect of leader perfectionism on employee deviant behavior via supervisor-subordinate relationship conflict. Conclusion: This study reveals the mechanism of how employee through deviant behavior as a opposition to leader perfectionism from an interpersonal relationship perspective, which provides theoretical and practical implications for reducing the negative impact of leader perfectionism and employee deviant behavior. Abstract:Whereas past studies focused on a leader's management activity, the present study, by drawing on social cognitive theory, focuses on the influence that a leader's creativity can have on the creativity of their employees in organizational settings and the situational factors that may moderate this relation. We conducted a survey study using a leader-subordinate dyads (194 pairs within 50 groups) sample to test our assumptions. The findings showed: (1) the presence of the leader's creativity has a positive association with the employees' creativity; (2) authoritarian leadership and relative leader-member exchange relationship (RLMX) can respectively moderate this effect; (3) differentiated authoritarian leadership can moderate the link between the presence of the leader's creativity and authoritarian leadership; and leader-member exchange differentiation (DLMX) interacted with the joint condition of the presence of the leader's creativity with RLMX to affect employees' creativity. At the end of this paper, the deficiencies of this study and the potential future directions are discussed.

Abstract:What is the effect of trait narcissism on creative performance? Although both constructs share an emphasis on uniqueness and novelty, prior investigations of the narcissism–creative performance relationship have produced inconsistent findings and failed to provide conclusive answers to this question. One possible reason for the seemingly contradictory evidence is that extant research has examined the influences of leader and follower narcissism separately rather than simultaneously. In this study, we address this issue by investigating leader–follower narcissism (in)congruence to comprehensively understand when and why leader or follower narcissism is beneficial or detrimental to creative performance. Integrating the self-orientation model of narcissism and narcissistic-tolerance theory, we posit that leader and follower narcissism jointly influence creative performance via identification with the leader, and that different leader–follower narcissism (in)congruence combinations exhibit distinct effects. The analyses of two-wave, two-level, and multi-source data from 421 followers and 54 direct leaders, using cross-level polynomial regressions, support our hypotheses: (1) identification with the leader is maximized when leader narcissism and follower narcissism are congruent; (2) identification with the leader is minimized when leader narcissism is higher than follower narcissism; and (3) identification with the leader mediates the effects of leader–follower narcissism (in)congruence combinations on creative performance.

Abstract:Prior work suggests that follower and leader risk orientation is positively associated with follower creativity. We suggest that this view is oversimplified and propose that follower creativity can be stimulated when leader and follower have diverging risk orientations. We, therefore, apply a configurational approach to creativity, evaluating varying combinations of leader and follower risk orientation on follower creativity. Across two field studies, we demonstrate that (a) follower creativity increases as leaders' and followers' risk orientations become more discrepant (i.e., incongruent); (b) follower creativity is higher when leader-follower dyads are congruent at moderate levels of risk orientation compared to congruence at the extremes (i.e., low and high levels); (c) follower-experienced intellectual stimulation mediates the relationship between leader-follower risk orientation incongruence and congruence and follower creativity; and (d) that leader authority openness moderates the indirect effect of leader-follower risk orientation incongruence on creativity via follower-experienced intellectual stimulation. Theoretical and practical implications specific to creativity and leader-follower relationships are discussed.

Abstract:Drawing upon various theoretical perspectives, we examine employee harmonious passion as a mechanism linking leader creative behavior and employee creativity. We hypothesize that leader creative behavior promotes employee harmonious passion when the leader is humble. In contrast, when leaders are not humble, their creative behaviors can decrease employee harmonious passion. Moreover, we expect that employees who occupy brokerage positions in organizational advice networks are better able to convert their harmonious passion into creativity. Based on weekly repeated measures of 95 employees and their 31 supervisors for 6 consecutive weeks, our multilevel modeling results provide support to the hypotheses. These findings shed important light on the bright as well as the dark side of leader creative behavior and the critical role played by leader humility and social networks in promoting employee creativity.

Abstract:Introduction: Moral disengagement is an essential concept in organizational behavioral ethics, as it is strongly related to employee behaviors and attitudes. What is not clear, however, is which leader traits are directly associated with employees' moral disengagement and which are indirectly associated with unethical behavior. This study draws on a social cognitive perspective that links leaders' other-oriented perfectionism (LOOP) with unethical employee behavior. Specifically, we propose that LOOP provides employees with excuses and encouragement to engage in unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB). Methods: We analyzed data collected from 266 full-time employees at two-time points, and used mediated and moderated structural equation models to test the hypotheses, and the findings largely support our claims. Results: The results suggest that LOOP effectively promotes employees' involvement in UPB. Moderated mediation tests suggest that the positive indirect impact of LOOP on employees' unethical behavior via moral disengagement was attenuated by higher employees' moral identity. Discussion: In summary, the results indicate that when leaders emphasize only perfection and make unrealistic demands on their employees, the latter perceive that engaging in unethical behavior is demanded by the leader, that the responsibility is not theirs, and thus they are more willing to engage in unethical behavior. This study discusses the implications of these findings from both practical and theoretical perspectives.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a moderated mediation model to examine the roles that psychological capital (PsyCap) and growth need strength may play in the relationship between humble leader behaviors and follower creativity. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a three-wave survey study with a sample of 165 matched leader-follower questionnaires in China. Multiple regression analyses, moderated regression analysis and bootstrapping analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Findings The results show that humble leader behaviors positively influence follower creativity, PsyCap mediates this influence and growth need strength not only moderates the relationship between humble leader behaviors and PsyCap, but also amplifies the indirect relationship between humble leader behaviors and follower creativity via PsyCap. Research limitations/implications Common method bias may still exit, although the measures of research variables were gathered from different sources and with time separation. Additionally, this study is conducted in a single cultural context, which may raise the question about the generalizability of our findings to other cultural contexts. Originality/value The primary contribution is building and examining a conceptual model that focuses on the potential effect of humble leader behaviors on follower creativity. Additionally, by confirming the mediating role of PsyCap, the research further uncovers why followers under humble leader behaviors are more likely to engage in creativity, and the moderating role of growth need strength found in this study also offers additional insight into that followers may differ in the degree to which they are receptive to leader effect.
Ethical Leadership Backfires: Enhancing Subordinates Rule Conformity Yet Inhibiting Creativity.

Abstract:Existing research found ethical leadership could bring a series of positive outcomes, including subordinate's creativity. Drawing on social learning theory, we proposed that ethical leadership was not all good for creativity as it promoted rule conformity rather than rule breaking, which is critical to creativity. In a study of 66 team leaders and their 265 subordinates, we found that ethical leadership was positively associated with subordinate's rule conformity which was negatively associated with their creativity. Moreover, this undesirable effect of ethical leadership on creativity was particularly likely to occur to employees who were highly risk-aversive. We discussed the theoretical contributions to the literatures on ethical leadership and creativity as well as the practical implications for managers.
Implicit followership theory to employee creativity: The roles of leader–member exchange, self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation

Abstract:Abstract Leaders’ implicit followership theory describes leaders’ personal assumptions about the traits and behaviors that characterize followers. Unlike traditional organizational behavior research, studies on leaders’ implicit followership theory can deepen our understandings of ‘how leaders and followers perceive, decide and take action’ from follower-centric perspective. Adopting 267 follower–leader dyads from 16 Chinese enterprises as our final sample, we found that: (1) positive leaders’ implicit followership theory had significant positive effect on followers’ creativity; (2) followers’ leader–member exchange with leader, intrinsic motivation and creative self-efficacy mediated the positive relationship between positive leaders’ implicit followership theory and followers’ creativity; (3) no significance difference was found between the mediating effects of leader–member exchange, intrinsic motivation and creative self-efficacy. The current study not only extended the application of social cognitive theory in leadership research, but also made contributions to the enrichment of social exchange theory and componential theory of creativity.

Abstract:Contributing to abusive supervision, creative leadership, and negative creativity research, we examine how and when leaders’ creative mindset relates to interpersonal aggression toward followers in the form of abusive supervision. Drawing upon moral disengagement theory, we theorize that leaders’ daily creative mindset positively relates to daily episodes of abusive supervision via state-based moral disengagement. Furthermore, we propose that trait-based moral disengagement moderates this indirect process such that low trait-based moral disengagement diminishes this effect. We found support for our hypotheses using a longitudinal study with a daily data collection over a 2-week period (Study 1) and an experimental study (Study 2). Our findings reveal the potential perils of leader creativity in leader-follower contexts and the importance of considering the moral disengagement process.

Based on self-determination theory, we propose that paradoxical leader behavior enhances employee creativity by increasing employees’ thriving at work. We also propose that psychological safety moderates the positive effect of thriving at work on employee creativity. Survey data from 139 supervisor-employee dyads in four Chinese enterprises indicates that paradoxical leader behavior has positive effects on employee creativity via the mediating effect of thriving at work. The results also show that psychological safety strengthens the positive relationship between thriving at work and employee creativity. This positive relationship will be stronger when there are higher levels of psychological safety. Our study supports the self-determination perspective in understanding paradoxical leader behavior, and also strengthens the application of this perspective in understanding paradoxical leader behavior and employee creativity.

Abstract:The present study investigated the separate and joint effects of authoritarian leadership and the individual subordinate's autonomy orientation on his or her creativity. Based on self-determination theory and previous researches, we propose that the individual subordinate's autonomy orientation is positively related to his or her creativity, while authoritarian leadership negatively related to the subordinate's creativity. Then we discussed the moderating effect of authoritarian leadership on the relationship between one's autonomy orientation and his or her creativity, such that the positive effect of autonomy orientation on creativity is weakened when authoritarian leadership is high.
