Abstract:We examined how construal level and job insecurity affect employees' responses to perceived external employability (PEE). Participants were 494 employees from enterprises in China. Multigroup analysis results showed that construal level moderated the effect of PEE on quantitative job insecurity and work engagement. Specifically, participants with concrete (low-level) construals experienced less quantitative job insecurity and displayed higher work engagement when they had higher PEE. In contrast, participants with abstract (high-level) construals reported the same amount of quantitative job insecurity and work engagement regardless of their PEE level. In addition, qualitative job insecurity mediated the relationship between PEE and work engagement. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Job insecurity is one of the most common stressors in contemporary working life. Although research indicates that the job insecurity construct has cognitive (i.e., the perceived negative change to one’s job) and affective (i.e., the emotional reactions to the potential change to one’s job) components, scholars rarely apply this distinction between cognitive and affective job insecurity in their conceptualization and theory development. On the basis of 535 independent samples, a meta-analysis in Study 1 found that (1) job insecurity was significantly related to 51 out of 56 outcomes and correlates; (2) affective job insecurity had stronger relations with the majority of outcomes and correlates than did cognitive job insecurity as well as explained valid, unique variance in outcomes and correlates above and beyond cognitive job insecurity; and (3) in most cases, affective job insecurity mediated the relationships between cognitive job insecurity and its outcomes. Furthermore, Study 2 examines a moderator that may explain why individuals with the same level of cognitive job insecurity may display different levels of affective job insecurity. Specifically, we found a stronger relationship between cognitive job insecurity and affective job insecurity among individuals with high work centrality with two samples. Overall, results demonstrate that it is empirically meaningful to treat cognitive job insecurity and affective job insecurity as two separate constructs and that affective job insecurity is more closely related to employee outcomes than is cognitive job insecurity. Future research could further assess affective job insecurity and continue to explore moderators and mediators in the cognitive job insecurity–affective job insecurity relationship.

Abstract:Job insecurity is a major source of stress in the process of organizational change,which not only triggers employees' concerns on work continuity and stability,but also leads to their mental distress.To explore the impact of job insecurity on employees' job attitudes and behaviors,this study builds a mediating model to examine the mediating effects of emotional labor between job insecurity and emotional exhaustion based on the conservation of resources theory and the stressors-strain framework.By using resource perspectives,this study illustrates how the cognitive and affective job insecurity affects the emotional exhaustion through the emotional labor and statistically tests the data from 197 employees in 10 enterprises with hierarchical regression,correlation analysis and other statistical methods.The results show that cognitive and affective job insecurity has a positive impact on the emotional exhaustion.The surface and deep act mediates the relationship between the job insecurity and the emotional exhaustion by depleting psychological effort.Thus,organizations can employ personnel managerial approaches including transferring job positions to enhance individual-organization fit as well as taking educational approaches including teaching people how to build positive job attitudes and applying positive coping strategies to decrease the negative impact of job insecurity on emotional exhaustion.

Abstract:The rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of work, making a discussion on job insecurity both timely and imperative. In this commentary, I critically examine several assumptions presented in Klug et al.'s lead article and propose alternative avenues to advance the field. First, I argue for a nuanced understanding of job insecurity by distinguishing between cognitive and affective dimensions, as well as between quantitative and qualitative aspects. By avoiding oversimplification, we can better capture the complex experiences of job insecurity. Second, I challenge the prevailing notion of job insecurity as solely a hindrance stressor with uniformly negative consequences. Instead, I emphasize its potentially motivating effects under certain conditions and advocate for exploring its curvilinear effects on outcomes. Third, I advocate for the adoption of competing theoretical frameworks to enrich our understanding of job insecurity's implications across multiple levels, especially focusing on outcomes at the team, unit, and organizational levels. Finally, I call for more intervention studies aimed at mitigating job insecurity at its sources and improving the well‐being outcomes of job‐insecure employees. To sum, I highlight the importance of challenging conventional assumptions and fostering innovative approaches in job insecurity research.

Abstract:Journal of Management, Ahead of Print. Modern organizations frequently expect their employees to exhibit high creativity while facing considerable job insecurity. Although it is often assumed that job insecurity diminishes individual creativity, the empirical findings on this relationship are not consistent. The present study aims to scrutinize this assumption and to address such inconsistencies. To do so, we cast both job insecurity and creativity as multidimensional constructs, and we examine key mechanisms and boundary conditions of their linkages. Results from both a longitudinal (Study 1) and a time-lagged multisource survey study (Study 2) illustrated a negative indirect relation between quantitative job insecurity and radical creativity via diminished career commitment. For qualitative job insecurity, by contrast, there was a negative indirect relation with incremental creativity via reduced organizational identification. Moreover, Study 2 revealed distinct moderators for these associations. Employees' turnover risk propensity buffered the indirect connection between quantitative job insecurity and radical creativity, whereas Confucian traditionality mitigated the indirect relation between qualitative job insecurity and incremental creativity. These findings shed new light on the important role of job insecurity for individual employees' creative performance and advance our theoretical understanding of the complexities underlying these linkages.

Abstract:Job Insecurity Scale was administered to 223 employees,to investigate the impact of job insecurity's various dimensions on employees' psychology and behavior.The results indicated that:(1)Insecurity of job execution and interpersonal relationship had significant differences between famale and male.Insecurity of interpersonal relationship,job loss,Intention to Remain and Organizational Citizenship Behavior to the whole Organization had significant differences among different companies;(2)Insecurity of interpersonal relationship,job execution and job loss were significant positive predictors of Intention to Remain,and the insecurity of excessive competition was significant negative predictor of Organizational Citizenship Behavior to Individuals and the whole Organization.The results suggested that Job Insecurity was one of the most important stressors of employees.

Abstract:An increasingly competitive market environment has made the phenomenon of job insecurity notably more prominent. This has not only triggered employees' concerns about job continuity and quality, but also influenced job performance. Based on a job demands-resources (JD-R) model, this study constructs a mediation model and uses a path analysis to examine the ways in which emotional exhaustion and work engagement mediate between job insecurity and performance. Moreover, a quantitative review of the relationship between job insecurity and job-related outcomes is provided. The results show that job insecurity is negatively related to aspects of well-being, such as job satisfaction, and positively related to negative variables, such as emotional exhaustion. This study uses path analysis to verify the mediating roles that emotional exhaustion and work engagement play between job insecurity and job performance. How job insecurity influences performance through emotional exhaustion and work engagement is shown using the JD-R model. This allows organisations to use skill training to increase job resources and psychological counselling to decrease the negative effects of job insecurity on job performance.

Abstract:The issue of job insecurity has received growing recognition in connection with increased unemployment and the use of large workforce reductions to improve organizational effectiveness and competitive ability. Although research suggests that job insecurity is negatively related to employee work attitudes and well-being, some issues concerning these relationships have not yet been fully addressed. First, concerns about the continued existence of one's job (quantitative insecurity) and important job features (qualitative insecurity) could relate differently to the outcomes. Second, empirical research has not systematically controlled for mood dispositions, although a growing body of literature suggests that this should be a standard procedure when self-rated stress reactions are measured. Third, most studies are cross-sectional and thus unable to control for prior levels of the outcome variables. Based on longitudinal data from a Swedish organization undergoing downsizing (N =375), this study revealed that quantitative insecurity was the most important dimension in that it negatively affected subsequent well-being after controlling for positive and negative affectivity as well as prior levels of wellbeing. Although job insecurity appears to have negative consequences for employees and their organizations, our results indicate that the consequences of insecurity may have been overestimated in previous, often cross-sectional, research.

Abstract:Considering the mixed results of the relationship between job insecurity and job performance, this study investigated the interaction effect of job insecurity and job embeddedness on job performance and examined the mediating role of affective commitment from the perspectives of conservation of resources theory and social exchange theory. A survey of 725 contract employees from two Chinese private manufacturing companies revealed that when employees had high levels of job embeddedness, job insecurity was significantly and positively related to job performance. In contrast, job insecurity was significantly and negatively related to job performance when there were low levels of job embeddedness. Furthermore, the results indicated that affective commitment mediated the interaction effect. The above conclusions not only illustrate the important role of job embeddedness in the relationship between job insecurity and job performance but also provide beneficial ideas and information to organisations and employees for managing job insecurity.

Abstract:Job insecurity is considered an important antecedent of an employee’s creativity. Though, the relationship between job insecurity and proactive behavior has been neglected in previous human resources management studies. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of job insecurity on employees’ proactive behavior and its mechanism. Based on the social cognitive theory and cognitive appraisal theory, two types of cognitive appraisal of employee’s job insecurity (hindrance vs. challenge) as mediator variables of job insecurity and proactive behavior association. In addition, the moderator roles of self-efficacy are examined. This study is carried out with 257 employees from Chinese firms to examine the hypothesized moderated mediation model by using the hierarchical regression analysis and the bootstrap. The results showed a different effect of job insecurity depending on its conceptualization. The results show that job insecurity has a negative effect on employees’ proactive behavior. At the same time, cognitive appraisal of employees’ job insecurity mediated the association between job insecurity and employee’s proactive behavior. Self-efficacy not only moderates the relationship between job insecurity and cognitive appraisal but also moderate the cognitive appraisal’s mediation effect between job insecurity and proactive behavior. The study’s theoretical and practical contributions and future research are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to explore the relationship between job insecurity and unsafe behaviour in human–machine collaboration, as well as investigating the mediating roles of emotional exhaustion and moderating roles of psychological detachment. Design/methodology/approach The authors followed the stressor-detachment model to build our research model. The authors selected manufacturing and service industry employees as samples, and designed three independent studies using the time-lagged method for SPSS and AMOS to test the hypotheses. Findings The results indicated that emotional exhaustion mediated the relationship between the two types of job insecurity and unsafe behaviours among service industry employees, while psychological detachment moderated the effect of qualitative job insecurity on emotional exhaustion. In manufacturing, psychological detachment moderated the effect of quantitative job insecurity on emotional exhaustion, while emotional exhaustion mediated the relationship between quantitative job insecurity and unsafe behaviours. Research limitations/implications The authors enhance understandings of how individual employee characteristics and the work environment jointly influence employees' levels of emotional exhaustion and likelihood of engaging in unsafe behaviours under the stressor-detachment model. Practical implications The authors suggest an important role of psychological detachment in human–machine collaboration. The authors also that organisations and managers could encourage employees not to check work-related emails on weekends to achieve full detachment. Originality/value This study contributes to both the stressor-detachment model and job insecurity literature. In addition, it investigates the role of detachment and emotional exhaustion by employees in human–machine collaboration.

Abstract:Although a few researchers have turned their attention to the positive impacts of job insecurity, they have discussed riskless pro-organizational behaviors, omitting some that are both risky and challenging, and neglecting different dimensions of job insecurity and the importance of comparative analysis of these. We examined the impact of dimensions of job insecurity on employees' taking charge. Specifically, from the job preservation perspective, we explored the influence of job insecurity on employees' response to taking charge. We acquired and analyzed leader–member matched data from 418 employees in 106 teams. We found a U-shaped relationship between employees' quantitative job insecurity and taking charge, whereas there was a negative correlation between qualitative job insecurity and taking charge. Additionally, employees' global job embeddedness moderated the negative relationship between qualitative job insecurity and taking charge, such that high job embeddedness alleviated the negative relationship and low job embeddedness enhanced the negative relationship between the two. These findings contribute to the directing of employees' taking-charge behavior in organizations.

Abstract:Moral disengagement is an intensely negative reaction that triggers unethical behavior in the workplace. By integrating the conservation of resources and moral disengagement theories, the current research examined how moral disengagement can explain the mechanism through which job insecurity results in adverse consequences. Furthermore, moral identity was theorized to moderate the hypothesized relationships. The theoretical model was tested by using time-lagged multisource data collected from 425 Chinese employees and their respective supervisors associated with the healthcare sector. The study concluded that job insecurity was positively linked with employees' moral disengagement, which, in turn, led to coworker undermining behavior. Furthermore, moral identity moderated the relationship between job insecurity, moral disengagement, and coworker undermining such that employees high in moral identity experience less moral disengagement and are less involved in coworker undermining. Theoretical and practical implications along with future research avenues are discussed.

Abstract:Given that qualitative and quantitative job insecurity represent two types of stressors with potentially different outcomes, this study builds upon the conservation of resources theory and the desperation principle to investigate how these distinct aspects of job insecurity contribute to different forms of interpersonal-oriented counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs). This contribution primarily occurs through the erosion of employees' organization-based self-esteem (OBSE). Crucially, work redesign strategies may assist employees in alleviating workplace bottlenecks. We further highlight the buffering roles of job crafting strategies (promotion- and prevention-oriented job crafting) in the indirect relationships of job insecurity - OBSE - interpersonal-oriented CWBs. Using a time-lagged design, a sample of 316 full-time employees from various occupations in Taiwan completed three waves of questionnaire survey. The results emphasize a significant risk for employees experiencing job insecurity in the workplace, as the associated work stress could deplete their OBSE, potentially leading to interpersonal-oriented CWBs. Furthermore, we shed light on how employees can reduce this risk by leveraging job crafting strategies.

Abstract:Job insecurity reflects a threat to the continuity and stability of employment as it is currently experienced. Job insecurity has been the focus of increasing scholarly and popular attention in light of technological, economic, and political changes over the past few decades that have left many insecure about the future of their jobs. Yet, conceptual ambiguities exist; the literature remains fragmented; and there lacks an overarching framework through which to organize and reconcile findings. The goal of this article is to offer an integrative review and conceptual framework that addresses these challenges and provides the groundwork for future research. To that end, it proposes a definition of job insecurity that differentiates it from potential antecedents, moderators, and outcomes. The article addresses antecedents and introduces a typology of mechanisms and threat foci that links antecedents to job insecurity and suggests yet unexplored predictors. Furthermore, the framework developed here considers four overarching mechanisms—stress, social exchange, job preservation motivation, and proactive coping—through which job insecurity leads to various outcomes, and it highlights potential competing tensions inherent in individuals’ responses. Finally, the framework introduces threat features, economic vulnerabilities, and psychological vulnerabilities as three overarching categories of variables that moderate reactions to job insecurity, and it identifies factors that contribute to each. In doing so, it suggests important levers through which to influence reactions to job insecurity; it helps explain variability in past research; and it provides a foundation for future work.

Abstract:Research evidences show that job insecurity has incongruent predictions on employees’ performance. We suggest that the relationship between employees’ subjective job insecurity and supervisor-rated performance is more complex than previously assumed. By integrating social exchange and proactive preservation mechanisms of job insecurity with the perceived workplace control contingency, this study investigates when and why job insecurity influences supervisor-rated performance via two opposing pathways. Specifically, we propose that the effects of employees’ subjective job insecurity on impression management and workplace deviance are contingent on their leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships. In a three-wave survey using data collected from 69 supervisors and their 314 subordinates in China, we found that job insecurity exerted paradoxical effects on supervisor-rated performance via two opposing mechanisms. Specifically, job insecurity had a positive indirect effect on performance via more impression management when LMX was high, whereas job insecurity had a negative indirect effect on performance via more workplace deviance when LMX was low. The theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:Given the rapid changes in current technologies, business models, and work environments, organizations and managers increasingly rely on their employees' proactive behaviors, such as taking charge, to gain competitive advantages. Taking charge involves a range of risky and future-oriented behaviors, and it requires employees to work hard to achieve them in the future. For employees with high job-insecurity, their job continuity in the future is threatened. Thus, they may not be willing to take risks to do additional work that is "future-oriented". To our knowledge, the effect of job insecurity on employees' taking charge has rarely been studied. As a result, the purpose of our study is to investigate whether, how, and when job insecurity will influence taking charge. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory and proactive motivation model, we develop a theoretical model. Moreover, we employed a multi-wave and multi-source survey to test our predictions. Based on the data from 194 full-time employees paired with their direct supervisors, the results provided consistent support for the proposed hypotheses. Specifically, the results indicate that job insecurity prohibits employees' taking charge behaviors through deteriorating their work engagement. Furthermore, employees' perception of interactional justice moderates the negative influence of job insecurity on their work engagement and, consequently, their taking charge behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Organizational justice has been shown to play an important role in employees' affective and performance outcomes particularly in uncertain contexts. In this study, we investigated the interaction effect of job insecurity and organizational justice on employees' performance, and examined the mediating role of work engagement from the perspective of uncertainty management theory. We used 2-wave data (Study 1) from a sample of 140 Chinese employees and 3-wave data (Study 2) from a sample of 125 Chinese employees to test our hypotheses. In Study 1, we found that when employees perceived low levels of organizational justice, job insecurity was significantly negatively related to job performance. In contrast, we found that job insecurity was not related to job performance when there were high levels of organizational justice. Study 2 again supported the interaction of job insecurity and organizational justice on job performance. Furthermore, it was found that work engagement mediated the interaction effect. The results of the mediated moderation analysis revealed that job insecurity was negatively associated with job performance through work engagement when organizational justice was low.

Abstract:Abstract Job insecurity has received a considerable amount of research attention in recent years. The purpose of the present paper is to examine the mediating role of work-family conflict on the relationship between job insecurity and employee well-being and investigate gender differences in these relationships. The researchers focus on the cognitive component of employee well-being, and measure the concept by job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Using a sample of 283 employees (145 males and 138 females) from 15 companies in Guangzhou, the paper investigates that work-family conflict partially mediated the relationship between job insecurity and job satisfaction as well as that between job insecurity and life satisfaction. Further, a multi-group analysis indicated that the path coefficients significantly differed between female and male employees in main land China.
