Abstract:We examined how construal level and job insecurity affect employees' responses to perceived external employability (PEE). Participants were 494 employees from enterprises in China. Multigroup analysis results showed that construal level moderated the effect of PEE on quantitative job insecurity and work engagement. Specifically, participants with concrete (low-level) construals experienced less quantitative job insecurity and displayed higher work engagement when they had higher PEE. In contrast, participants with abstract (high-level) construals reported the same amount of quantitative job insecurity and work engagement regardless of their PEE level. In addition, qualitative job insecurity mediated the relationship between PEE and work engagement. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Job Insecurity Scale was administered to 223 employees,to investigate the impact of job insecurity's various dimensions on employees' psychology and behavior.The results indicated that:(1)Insecurity of job execution and interpersonal relationship had significant differences between famale and male.Insecurity of interpersonal relationship,job loss,Intention to Remain and Organizational Citizenship Behavior to the whole Organization had significant differences among different companies;(2)Insecurity of interpersonal relationship,job execution and job loss were significant positive predictors of Intention to Remain,and the insecurity of excessive competition was significant negative predictor of Organizational Citizenship Behavior to Individuals and the whole Organization.The results suggested that Job Insecurity was one of the most important stressors of employees.

Abstract:Research evidences show that job insecurity has incongruent predictions on employees’ performance. We suggest that the relationship between employees’ subjective job insecurity and supervisor-rated performance is more complex than previously assumed. By integrating social exchange and proactive preservation mechanisms of job insecurity with the perceived workplace control contingency, this study investigates when and why job insecurity influences supervisor-rated performance via two opposing pathways. Specifically, we propose that the effects of employees’ subjective job insecurity on impression management and workplace deviance are contingent on their leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships. In a three-wave survey using data collected from 69 supervisors and their 314 subordinates in China, we found that job insecurity exerted paradoxical effects on supervisor-rated performance via two opposing mechanisms. Specifically, job insecurity had a positive indirect effect on performance via more impression management when LMX was high, whereas job insecurity had a negative indirect effect on performance via more workplace deviance when LMX was low. The theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:Research findings on the effects of job insecurity on performance are mixed. Some studies show a negative relationship between job insecurity and performance; while others indicate a positive association, a curvilinear or a null relationship. We suggest that the relation between employees' subjective job insecurity and supervisor-rated performance is more complex than previously assumed. Based on stress appraisal theory, this study investigates when and why job insecurity is associated with supervisor-rated performance via two different pathways. Specifically, we pro-pose that these two mechanisms (i.e., impression management and workplace deviance) are contingent on the dyadic leader-member exchange (LMX) between the subordinate and his/her supervisor. Abstract:Considering the mixed results of the relationship between job insecurity and job performance, this study investigated the interaction effect of job insecurity and job embeddedness on job performance and examined the mediating role of affective commitment from the perspectives of conservation of resources theory and social exchange theory. A survey of 725 contract employees from two Chinese private manufacturing companies revealed that when employees had high levels of job embeddedness, job insecurity was significantly and positively related to job performance. In contrast, job insecurity was significantly and negatively related to job performance when there were low levels of job embeddedness. Furthermore, the results indicated that affective commitment mediated the interaction effect. The above conclusions not only illustrate the important role of job embeddedness in the relationship between job insecurity and job performance but also provide beneficial ideas and information to organisations and employees for managing job insecurity.

Abstract:Based on the affective events theory, this paper discusses the influence of job insecurity on employees’ extra-role behavior. The mediating effect of negative emotion and the moderating effect of workplace friendship are also tested. The results of an empirical analysis, based on the data of 327 employees, show that job insecurity has a significant negative impact on employees’ extra-role behavior. Negative emotion plays a mediating role in the relationship between job insecurity and extra-role behavior. Workplace friendship moderated the relationship between job insecurity and negative emotions, as well as between job insecurity and extra-role behavior. Workplace friendship also moderates the mediating effect of negative emotion on the relationship between job insecurity and extra-role behavior, that is, the higher the level of the workplace friendship is, the weaker the mediation role mentioned above will be. The research results have implications for the sustainable development of the organization.

Abstract:Organizational scholars concur that job security can attach employees to a workplace and improve their job quality. The relationship between job security and employees' deviant behaviors in the workplace, such as counterproductive work behavior (CWB), lacks insights into how or why this occurs, especially in a diversified employment context. To address these limitations, we developed a theoretical model of job security impact on employees' CWB from the perspective of social identity. Analysis of employees (N = 208) and their supervisors in a China state-owned company were used to test the hypothesis. Results confirmed the negative relationship between job security and CWB; organizational identification partly mediates the relationship between job security and CWB. Moderated mediation analyses further indicate that the indirect effect of job security on CWB via organizational identification are stronger for temporary employees than for permanent employees. This article contributes to the understanding of job security's impact on employees' deviant behavior, practical implications and research aspects are discussed.

Abstract:Drawing upon approach and avoidance coping theory and self- enhancement and self-protection motives literature, we examine how and when employee’s job insecurity has different effects on behavioral outcomes. Analyses of two-wave data from 31 team supervisors and 282 subordinates show that job insecurity is positively related to positive behavioral outcomes including seeking challenges, seeking resources and helping behavior through self- enhancement motives. These indirect effects of job insecurity on positive behavioral outcomes are amplified by team psychological safety. At the same time, job insecurity is positively related to negative behavioral outcomes including reducing demands and decreased change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior through self-protection motives. These indirect effects of job insecurity on negative behavioral outcomes are strengthened for older employees. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed along with limitations and future research directions.

Abstract:Job insecurity is a major source of stress in the process of organizational change,which not only triggers employees' concerns on work continuity and stability,but also leads to their mental distress.To explore the impact of job insecurity on employees' job attitudes and behaviors,this study builds a mediating model to examine the mediating effects of emotional labor between job insecurity and emotional exhaustion based on the conservation of resources theory and the stressors-strain framework.By using resource perspectives,this study illustrates how the cognitive and affective job insecurity affects the emotional exhaustion through the emotional labor and statistically tests the data from 197 employees in 10 enterprises with hierarchical regression,correlation analysis and other statistical methods.The results show that cognitive and affective job insecurity has a positive impact on the emotional exhaustion.The surface and deep act mediates the relationship between the job insecurity and the emotional exhaustion by depleting psychological effort.Thus,organizations can employ personnel managerial approaches including transferring job positions to enhance individual-organization fit as well as taking educational approaches including teaching people how to build positive job attitudes and applying positive coping strategies to decrease the negative impact of job insecurity on emotional exhaustion.

Abstract:While job insecurity has a wide range of negative effects on employees’ work attitudes and behaviors, scholars still know little about its impact on leaders. Drawing from conservation of resources theory, we developed and tested a theoretical model that links job insecurity and transformational leadership behavior. This model explores the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and the moderating role of leaders’ trait mindfulness in influencing the mediation. Results from data that were collected at two time points from 161 leader–follower dyads in various Chinese organizations showed that job insecurity is negatively related to transformational leadership behavior through increased emotional exhaustion. Moreover, the positive relationship between job insecurity and emotional exhaustion as well as the negative indirect effect of job insecurity on transformational leadership behavior via emotional exhaustion are weaker for leaders with high levels of trait mindfulness. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:An increasingly competitive market environment has made the phenomenon of job insecurity notably more prominent. This has not only triggered employees' concerns about job continuity and quality, but also influenced job performance. Based on a job demands-resources (JD-R) model, this study constructs a mediation model and uses a path analysis to examine the ways in which emotional exhaustion and work engagement mediate between job insecurity and performance. Moreover, a quantitative review of the relationship between job insecurity and job-related outcomes is provided. The results show that job insecurity is negatively related to aspects of well-being, such as job satisfaction, and positively related to negative variables, such as emotional exhaustion. This study uses path analysis to verify the mediating roles that emotional exhaustion and work engagement play between job insecurity and job performance. How job insecurity influences performance through emotional exhaustion and work engagement is shown using the JD-R model. This allows organisations to use skill training to increase job resources and psychological counselling to decrease the negative effects of job insecurity on job performance.
Cognitive and Affective Job Insecurity: A Meta-Analysis and a Primary Study

Abstract:Job insecurity is one of the most common stressors in contemporary working life. Although research indicates that the job insecurity construct has cognitive (i.e., the perceived negative change to one’s job) and affective (i.e., the emotional reactions to the potential change to one’s job) components, scholars rarely apply this distinction between cognitive and affective job insecurity in their conceptualization and theory development. On the basis of 535 independent samples, a meta-analysis in Study 1 found that (1) job insecurity was significantly related to 51 out of 56 outcomes and correlates; (2) affective job insecurity had stronger relations with the majority of outcomes and correlates than did cognitive job insecurity as well as explained valid, unique variance in outcomes and correlates above and beyond cognitive job insecurity; and (3) in most cases, affective job insecurity mediated the relationships between cognitive job insecurity and its outcomes. Furthermore, Study 2 examines a moderator that may explain why individuals with the same level of cognitive job insecurity may display different levels of affective job insecurity. Specifically, we found a stronger relationship between cognitive job insecurity and affective job insecurity among individuals with high work centrality with two samples. Overall, results demonstrate that it is empirically meaningful to treat cognitive job insecurity and affective job insecurity as two separate constructs and that affective job insecurity is more closely related to employee outcomes than is cognitive job insecurity. Future research could further assess affective job insecurity and continue to explore moderators and mediators in the cognitive job insecurity–affective job insecurity relationship.

Abstract:Based on Conservation of resources (COR) theory and job preservation motivation, this paper examines the mediating role of impression management between job insecurity and employees' innovative behavior, and the moderating role of job embeddedness in the process. Using two-wave data from 315 samples obtained through the Credamo platform in China, the indirect effects of quantitative and qualitative job insecurity on employees' innovative behavior were found to be different and to be mediated by defensiveness and assertiveness in impression management. Moreover, job embeddedness moderated the relationship not only between job insecurity and impression management, but also between job insecurity and innovative behavior via impression management in moderated mediation analyses. This study provides new insights into the mechanism between job insecurity and innovative conduct from the impression management perspective.

Abstract:Cheating is prevalent in workplaces and has a significant detrimental impact, and thus considerable scholarly research has been dedicated to investigating its antecedents. While various influential factors (e.g., performance pressure, perceived threats of COVID-19, leadership, and employee characteristics) have been identified, the effects of employment conditions remain relatively underexplored. We extend the research by applying impression management theory to examine how perceived job insecurity contributes to workplace cheating behavior. Through a field survey and an experimental study, we found that impression management motives mediate the positive link between job insecurity and workplace cheating behavior. In addition, job immobility exacerbates the direct effect of job insecurity on impression management motives, which in turn increases workplace cheating behavior. The findings enrich the literature by identifying job insecurity as a critical employment-related antecedent of workplace cheating behavior and by developing a comprehensive impression management framework to elucidate whether, how, and when job insecurity may result in such behavior.

Abstract:Although a few researchers have turned their attention to the positive impacts of job insecurity, they have discussed riskless pro-organizational behaviors, omitting some that are both risky and challenging, and neglecting different dimensions of job insecurity and the importance of comparative analysis of these. We examined the impact of dimensions of job insecurity on employees' taking charge. Specifically, from the job preservation perspective, we explored the influence of job insecurity on employees' response to taking charge. We acquired and analyzed leader–member matched data from 418 employees in 106 teams. We found a U-shaped relationship between employees' quantitative job insecurity and taking charge, whereas there was a negative correlation between qualitative job insecurity and taking charge. Additionally, employees' global job embeddedness moderated the negative relationship between qualitative job insecurity and taking charge, such that high job embeddedness alleviated the negative relationship and low job embeddedness enhanced the negative relationship between the two. These findings contribute to the directing of employees' taking-charge behavior in organizations.

Abstract:An expanding “gig” economy has changed the nature of employment; thus, researchers have recently focused on exploring the role of job precariousness in the workplace. However, little research attention has been given to understanding why, how and when job precariousness leads to employees’ negative behavioral outcomes in the service-oriented industry. In the current study, we examined job insecurity as a mediator and employees’ negative affect as a moderator in the relationship between job precariousness and employees’ withdrawal behavior. Using a sample of 472 employees working in Chinese hotels, we found that job precariousness is positively related to employees’ withdrawal behavior by increasing their job insecurity. Moreover, this mediating relationship is conditional on the moderator variable of employees’ negative affect for the path from job insecurity to withdrawal behavior. The importance of these findings for understanding the undesirable behavior outcomes of job precariousness is discussed.

Abstract:Journal of Management, Ahead of Print. Modern organizations frequently expect their employees to exhibit high creativity while facing considerable job insecurity. Although it is often assumed that job insecurity diminishes individual creativity, the empirical findings on this relationship are not consistent. The present study aims to scrutinize this assumption and to address such inconsistencies. To do so, we cast both job insecurity and creativity as multidimensional constructs, and we examine key mechanisms and boundary conditions of their linkages. Results from both a longitudinal (Study 1) and a time-lagged multisource survey study (Study 2) illustrated a negative indirect relation between quantitative job insecurity and radical creativity via diminished career commitment. For qualitative job insecurity, by contrast, there was a negative indirect relation with incremental creativity via reduced organizational identification. Moreover, Study 2 revealed distinct moderators for these associations. Employees' turnover risk propensity buffered the indirect connection between quantitative job insecurity and radical creativity, whereas Confucian traditionality mitigated the indirect relation between qualitative job insecurity and incremental creativity. These findings shed new light on the important role of job insecurity for individual employees' creative performance and advance our theoretical understanding of the complexities underlying these linkages.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study aimed to understand the association between leader–member exchange (LMX) and employee job insecurity. We proposed that LMX quality may foster a sense of organizational insider status, which could reduce the perception of job insecurity. Moreover, the extent to which employees identify their supervisor with the organization (i.e. the extent of supervisor organizational embodiment, SOE) and the variation in LMX quality within the work group (i.e. LMX differentiation) were theorized to be moderators of the effect of LMX quality on perceived organizational insider status. Time-lagged data were collected from a sample of 186 Chinese employees working in 31 work groups. The results indicated that perceived organizational insider status mediated the relationship between LMX quality and job insecurity and that SOE moderated the effect of LMX quality on perceived organizational insider status such that the effect was stronger when SOE was high (vs. low). However, we did not find support for the moderating effect of LMX differentiation. This study provides new insights into the underlying mechanism and boundary conditions of the association between LMX quality and job insecurity, a typical stressor for many present-day workers.

Abstract:A competitive business environment makes organizations increasingly dependent on their employees to proactively seek feedback aimed at improving job performance and requires organizations to frequently engage in restructuring activities that may cause employees to experience job insecurity. This poses an important theoretical puzzle regarding the relationship between job insecurity and feedback-seeking behavior. This study clarifies this relationship by addressing the moderating role of perceived organizational support and provides a mechanism that explains the mechanism behind the moderating process. This study builds a mediated moderating model by drawing from the uncertainty reduction and social exchange theories. By analyzing data collected from 567 employees of manufacturing enterprises in China, we find that the relationship between job insecurity and feedback-seeking behavior is negative under conditions of high perceived organizational support and is positive under conditions of low perceived organizational support. Collectivism value can mediate the moderating role of perceived organizational support.
