Abstract:We report the observation of the first inverse triple-decker complex in a tri-lanthanide-doped boron cluster. Photoelectron spectroscopy of La3B14- reveals well-resolved photodetachment transitions. Quantum chemical studies show that the most stable structure of the La3B14- cluster exhibits a tilted La-B-8-La-B-8-La inverse triple-decker structure with two conjoined B-8 rings sharing a pair of B atoms due to strong inter-layer B-B bonding. The tilted structure enhances both B-B and B-La bonding, resulting in a highly stable inverse triple-decker structure. Theoretical calculations further show that multi-decker conjoined structures are viable as a new class of 1D lanthanide boron nanostructures.
Expanded Inverse-Sandwich Complexes of Lanthanum Borides: La2B10- and La2B11-

Abstract:Inverse-sandwich structures have been observed recently for dilanthanide boride clusters, in which two Ln atoms sandwich a monocyclic B-x ring for x = 7-9. An interesting question is if larger Bx rings are possible to form such inverse-sandwich clusters. Here we address this question by investigating La2B10- and La2B11- using photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Photoelectron spectra of La2B10- and La2B11- show complicated, but well-resolved, spectral features that are used to compare with theoretical calculations. We have found that global minimum structures of the two clusters are based on the octa-boron ring. The global minimum of La2B10- consists of two chiral enantiomers with C-1 symmetry, which can be viewed as adding a B-2 unit off-plane to the B-8 ring, whereas that of La2B11- can be viewed as adding a B-3 unit in-plane to the B-8 ring in a second coordination shell. Chemical bonding analyses reveal localized B- B bonds on the edge of the clusters and delocalized bonds in the expanded boron frameworks. The interactions between the La atoms and the boron frameworks include the unique (d-p)delta bonding, which was found to be the key for inverse-sandwich complexes with monocyclic boron rings. The current study confirms that the largest monocyclic boron ring to form the inversesandwich structures is B-9 and provide insights into the structural evolutions of larger lanthanide boride clusters.

Abstract:A novel (2+2) macrocyclic Schiff base lanthanide(III) complex [La(H 4 L)(NO 3 ) 3 ]·(4,4′-bipy)·2H 2 O has been synthesized by template condensation of 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane and 2,6-diformyl-4-chlorophenol. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 16.400(3), b = 12.985(3), c = 19.118(4) Å, and Z = 4. In the macrocycle, La 3+ was coordinated by two imino nitrogen atoms, two phenolic oxygen atoms, one pedant alcoholic oxygen atom, and six nitrate oxygen atoms. It is interesting that the neutral lanthanide macrocyle forms a saddlelike supramolecule with 4,4′-bipyridine.
[La(eta(x)-B-x)la](-) (X=7-9): a New Class of Inverse Sandwich Complexes

Abstract:Despite the importance of bulk lanthanide borides, nanoclusters of lanthanide and boron have rarely been investigated. Here we show that lanthanide-boron binary clusters, La2Bx-, can form a new class of inverse-sandwich complexes, [Ln(eta(x)-B-x)Ln](-) (x = 7-9). Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the monocyclic B-x rings in the inverse sandwiches display similar bonding, consisting of three delocalized sigma and three delocalized pi bonds. Such monocyclic boron rings do not exist for bare boron clusters, but they are stabilized by the sandwiching lanthanide atoms. An electron counting rule is proposed to predict the sizes of the B-x ring that can form stable inverse sandwiches. A unique (d-p)delta bond is found to play important roles in the stability of all three inverse-sandwich complexes.
Probing the Structures and Lanthanum-Lanthanum Bonding in La2Bn- (n = 4-6) Clusters

Abstract:We report an investigation on the structures and chemical bonding in a series of di-lanthanum boron clusters, La2Bn- (n = 4-6), using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained and used to verify the global minima of the lanthanide boron clusters. The structures of La2B4- and La2B5- are found to consist of open B4 and B5 rings, respectively, around the La2 dimer equatorially. Theoretical evidence of La-La σ bonding is obtained in La2B4-, whereas the bonding in La2B5- is similar to that of an incomplete inverse sandwich without real La-La bonding. The global minimum of La2B6- is completely different, where one of the La atoms can be viewed as substituting a B atom of the B7 cluster due to the high electronic stability of the B73- borozene. The resulting lanthaborozene [LaB6]3- forms a half-sandwich structure with the second La atom, with evidence of La-La σ bonding. Lanthanide-lanthanide bonds are relatively rare in chemistry. The current work suggests that binary lanthanide boron clusters provide interesting systems to study lanthanide-lanthanide bonding.
Observation of highly stable and symmetric lanthanide octa-boron inverse sandwich complexes.

Abstract:While boron forms a wide range of metal borides with important industrial applications, there has been relatively little attention devoted to lanthanide boride clusters. Here we report a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical study on two octa-boron di-lanthanide clusters, Ln2B8- (Ln = La, Pr). We found that these clusters form highly stable inverse sandwich structures, [Ln-B8-Ln]-, with strong Ln and B8 bonding via interactions between the Ln 5d orbitals and the delocalized σ and π orbitals on the B8 ring. A (d-p)δ bond, involving the 5dδ and the antibonding π orbital of the B8 ring, is observed to be important in the Ln-B8 interactions. The highly symmetric inverse sandwich structures are overwhelmingly more stable than any other isomers. Upon electron detachment, the (d-p)δ orbitals become half-filled, giving rise to a triplet ground state for neutral La2B8 In addition to the two unpaired electrons in the (d-p)δ orbitals upon electron detachment, the neutral Pr2B8 complex also contains two unpaired 4f electrons on each Pr center. The six unpaired spins in Pr2B8 are ferromagnetically coupled to give rise to a septuplet ground state. The current work suggests that highly magnetic Ln…B8…Ln inverse sandwiches or 1D Ln…B8…Ln nanowires may be designed with novel electronic and magnetic properties.

Abstract:Rare earth doped boron clusters have attracted much attention due to their special optical, electrical and magnetic properties. The geometric structure, stability, electronic properties and aromaticity of negative rare earth doped boron clusters REBn- (RE = La, Sc; n = 6, 8) are investigated with the artificial bee colony algorithm combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the PBE0/RE/SDD//B/6-311+G* level of theory. Calculations show that the ground state structures of REBn- (RE = La, Sc; n = 6, 8) are all C2 symmetry, and the doped lanthanide atom is located in the “boat-shaped” structure with the top center. By comparing with the experimental photoelectron spectroscopy, it is confirmed that the ground state structure of LaB8- is a “zither-like” three-dimensional structure, and the ground state structure of ScB8- is an “umbrella” structure with C7V symmetry formed by the scandium atom at the “umbrella handle”. The electron localization between RE-B is inferior to that between B-B. The simulated photoelectron spectra have similar spectral characteristics with the experimental results. The lowest energy structures of LaB6- and ScB6- are σ-π double aromatic clusters, and the structures exhibit aromaticity. The density of states of low-energy isomers shows that the open shell ScB8- density of states spectrum exhibits spin polarization phenomenon, which is expected to assemble magnetic material elements. These studies are helpful to understand the evolution of the structure and properties of nanomaterials and provide important theoretical support for the design of nanomaterials with practical value.
First-principles Study of La–B36N36 Cage

Abstract:Based on the experimental studies of La–B36N36 cluster (Takeo Oku et al., Diamond Rel. Mater. 11 (2002) 940), first principles calculations using the projector-augmented wave method are performed on La–B36N36 cluster. The structure is fully optimized. It is found that the encapsulation of a La atom inside the B36N36 cage is energetically favorable, although the interaction between the La atom and the cage is weak. In order to optimize the interactions with the cage, the La atom is shifted off the cage center. The HOMO–LUMO gap is much reduced by doping, and the complex cage carries a magnetic moment of 1.0μB.

Chemical Bonding of Crystalline LnB6 (ln = La-Lu) and Its Relationship with Ln2B8 Gas-Phase Complexes.

Abstract:Solid-state lanthanide (Ln) borides of the simple LnB(6) composition not only exhibit exciting physical behavior, in particular magnetic properties, but their electronic structure and chemical bonding are particularly intriguing as well. To shed more light on the latter, we have performed quantum-chemical (DFT+U) electronic-structure calculations and bonding analyses of the entire LnB(6) series with Ln from La to Lu. Trivially, the boron framework is held together by the B 2sp orbitals, and this framework bonds to the Ln atoms via covalent ionic interactions. The Ln 4f electrons, however, are decisive for the magnetic properties. In more detail, the effective charges of the Ln atoms as calculated by (Mulliken or Lowdin) occupation numbers of the 6s/5d/4f orbitals are compatible with experimentally assigned oxidation numbers. The shorter inter-octahedral B B bonds, dominated by 2s-2p interactions, turn out to be stronger than the intra-octahedral B B bonding with a more 2p-2p-like character. Interestingly, there are strong structural similarities between the LnB(6) motif studied here and gas-phase Ln(2)B(8) species showing inverse sandwich structures, and these similarities are also reflected in the electronic structure. In particular, Ln(2)B(8) is predicted to have a large electron affinity. Hence, this work aims at providing an intrinsic link between gas-phase complexes and solid-state crystal structures in order to better understand the former species.
MB16 - (M=Sc, Y, La): Perfect Bowl-Like Boron Clusters

Abstract:The introduction of transition-metal doping has engendered a remarkable array of unprecedented boron motifs characterized by distinctive geometries and bonding, particularly those heretofore unobserved in pure boron clusters. In this study, we present a perfect (no defects) boron framework manifesting an inherently high-symmetry, bowl-like architecture, denoted as MB16 - (M=Sc, Y, La). In MB16 -, the B16 is coordinated to M atoms along the C5v-symmetry axis. The bowl-shaped MB16 - structure is predicted to be the lowest-energy structure with superior stability, owing to its concentric (2 π+10 π) dual π aromaticity. Notably, the C5v-symmetry bowl-like B16 - is profoundly stabilized through the doping of an M atom, facilitated by strong d-pπ interactions between M and boron motifs, in conjunction with additional electrostatic stabilization by an electron transfer from M to the boron motifs. This concerted interplay of covalent and electrostatic interactions between M and bowl-like B16 renders MB16 - a species of exceptional thermodynamic stability, thus making it a viable candidate for gas-phase experimental detection.
Lanthanides with Unusually Low Oxidation States in the PrB3- and PrB4- Boride Clusters

Abstract:Lanthanide elements typically exhibit a +III oxidation state (OS) in chemical compounds with a few in +IV or even +V OS. Although lanthanides with +II OS have been observed recently in organometallic compounds, +I OS is extremely rare. Using a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum theoretical study, we have found two low OS lanthanides in doped boron clusters, PrB3- and PrB4-. These two clusters are shown to have planar structures, in which the Pr atom is bonded to the aromatic boron clusters via two Pr-B σ bonds. Chemical bonding and electronic structure analyses reveal that the Pr atom is in a very low OS in the two boride clusters: +II in PrB3- and +I in PrB4-. The current finding suggests that there should exist a whole class of boride complexes featuring rather low-valent lanthanides and expands the frontier of lanthanide chemistry.

Abstract:Sodium sulpho-salicylate (C7H4SO6Na2) reacts with terbium perchlorate to form Tb(OH)(C7H3SO6)H2O (A) which reacts with lanthanum perchlorate to give the title complex Na3TbLa2(C7H3SO6)(4) . 26H(2)O (B) whose crystal structure was determined. The Tb-III and La-III ions are bridged by tridentate and tetradentate carboxylic groups. The complex is a polymeric molecule formed by a repeating trinuclear HLC structural unit. Tb-III is eight-coordinated dodecahedral and La-III is 10-coordinated with a distorted bicapped square antiprismatic configuration. The excitation and emission spectra showed that the maximum excitation wavelength of A is 356 nm, which is 12 nm greater than that of B, 344 nm. Both A and B have the same emission spectra at their excitation wavelengths 356 and 344 nm; the fluorescence intensity of B is 3.3 times that of A at the maximum emission wavelength 543 nm. The fluorescence enhancement of non-fluorescent ions (NFI) such as La-III for the fluorescent ions (FI) such as Tb-III in one molecule is known as "synergistic fluorescence effect", which is different from co-fuorescence resulting from the mixing of NFI complex with FI complex. The relationship between the structure and properties is discussed.
Monovalent lanthanide(I) in borozene complexes

Abstract:Abstract Lanthanide (Ln) elements are generally found in the oxidation state +II or +III, and a few examples of +IV and +V compounds have also been reported. In contrast, monovalent Ln(+I) complexes remain scarce. Here we combine photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to study Ln-doped octa-boron clusters (LnB 8 − , Ln = La, Pr, Tb, Tm, Yb) with the rare +I oxidation state. The global minimum of the LnB 8 − species changes from C s to C 7v symmetry accompanied by an oxidation-state change from +III to +I from the early to late lanthanides. All the C 7v -LnB 8 − clusters can be viewed as a monovalent Ln(I) coordinated by a η 8 -B 8 2− doubly aromatic ligand. The B 7 3− , B 8 2− , and B 9 − series of aromatic boron clusters are analogous to the classical aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, C 5 H 5 − , C 6 H 6 , and C 7 H 7 + , respectively, with similar trends of size and charge state and they are named collectively as “borozenes”. Lanthanides with variable oxidation states and magnetic properties may be formed with different borozenes.

Unique Double and Triple Decker Arrangements of Rare‐Earth 9,10‐Diborataanthracene Complexes Featuring Single‐Molecule Magnet Characteristics

Abstract:Herein, we present the first report on the synthesis of rare-earth complexes featuring a 9,10-diborataanthracene ligand. This 14-π-electron ligand is highly reductive and was previously used in small-molecule activation. Salt elimination reactions between dipotassium 9,10-diethyl-9,10-diborataanthracene [K2(DEDBA)] and [LnIII(η8-CotTIPS)(BH4)(thf)x] (CotTIPS = 1,4-(iPr3Si)3C8H6) in a 1:1 ratio yielded heteroleptic sandwich complexes [K(η8-CotTIPS)LnIII(η6-DEDBA)] (Ln = Y, Dy, Er). These compounds form Lewis-base-free one-dimensional coordination polymers when crystallised from toluene. In contrast, reaction of [K2(DEDBA)] and [LnIII(η8-CotTIPS)(BH4)(thf)x] in a 1:2 ratio led to the formation of heteroleptic triple-decker complexes [(η8-CotTIPS)LnIII(μ-η6:η6-DEDBA)LnIII(η8-CotTIPS)] (Ln = Y, Dy, Er). Notably, these are not only the first lanthanide triple-decker compounds featuring a six-membered ring as a deck but also the first trivalent lanthanide triple-decker featuring a heterocycle in the coordination sphere. Magnetic investigations reveal that [K(η8-CotTIPS)LnIII(η6-DEDBA)] (Ln = Dy, Er) and [(η8-CotTIPS)ErIII(μ-η6:η6-DEDBA)ErIII(η8-CotTIPS)] exhibit Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behaviour. In the case of [(η8-CotTIPS)LnIII(μ-η6:η6-DEDBA)LnIII(η8-CotTIPS)] (Ln = Dy, Er), the introduction of a second near lanthanide ion results in strong antiferromagnetic interactions, allowing the enhancement of the magnetic characteristic of the system, compared to the quasi isolated counterpart. This research renews the overlooked coordination chemistry of the DBA ligand and expands it to encompass rare-earth elements.

Continuation Calculations of Boron- (Aluminum-, Titanium-, and Nickel-) Doped La13 Clusters.

Abstract:In this work, we have calculated boron-, aluminum-, titanium-, and nickel-doped La13 clusters by DMOL method based on the density-functional theory. Two doping modes are employed: surface and center doping. The boron, aluminum, and nickel atoms prefer to occupy the surface sites while the titanium atom prefers to occupy the center site. The doped La13 clusters with these four kinds of atoms have lower binding energy than pure La13 clusters. The icosahedral isomers are of lower binding energy than cubotahedral and decahedral isomers for La12B(-1), La12Al(-1), and La12Ni, while doping makes the cubotahedral La12Ti stable with a binding energy a little lower than icosahedral La12Ti. There are electronic shell effects in icosahedral La12B(-1) and La12Al(-1). The icosahedral La12B(-1) is promising to be formed during the doped process experimentally. Furthermore, we have also discussed the distorted structures of center doping by bond lengths, density of states, and charge transfers.
PrB7−: A Praseodymium‐Doped Boron Cluster with a PrII Center Coordinated by a Doubly Aromatic Planar η7‐B73− Ligand

Abstract:The structure and bonding of a Pr-doped boron cluster (PrB7−) are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. The adiabatic electron detachment energy of PrB7− is found to be low [1.47(8) eV]. A large energy gap is observed between the first and second detachment features, indicating a highly stable neutral PrB7. Global minimum searches and comparison between experiment and theory show that PrB7− has a half-sandwich structure with C6v symmetry. Chemical bonding analyses show that PrB7− can be viewed as a PrII[η7-B73−] complex with three unpaired electrons, corresponding to a Pr (4f26s1) open-shell configuration. Upon detachment of the 6s electron, the neutral PrB7 cluster is a highly stable PrIII[η7-B73−] complex with Pr in its favorite +3 oxidation state. The B73− ligand is found to be highly stable and doubly aromatic with six delocalized π and six delocalized σ electrons and should exist for a series of lanthanide MIII[η7-B73−] complexes.

Abstract:Sodium sulpho-salicylate (C7H4SO6Na2) reacts with terbium perchlorate to form Tb(OH)(C7H3SO6)H2O (A) which reacts with lanthanum perchlorate to give the title complex Na3TbLa2(C7H3SO6)(4) . 26H(2)O (B) whose crystal structure was determined. The Tb-III and La-III ions are bridged by tridentate and tetradentate carboxylic groups. The complex is a polymeric molecule formed by a repeating trinuclear HLC structural unit. Tb-III is eight-coordinated dodecahedral and La-III is 10-coordinated with a distorted bicapped square antiprismatic configuration. The excitation and emission spectra showed that the maximum excitation wavelength of A is 356 nm, which is 12 nm greater than that of B, 344 nm. Both A and B have the same emission spectra at their excitation wavelengths 356 and 344 nm; the fluorescence intensity of B is 3.3 times that of A at the maximum emission wavelength 543 nm. The fluorescence enhancement of non-fluorescent ions (NFI) such as La-III for the fluorescent ions (FI) such as Tb-III in one molecule is known as ''synergistic fluorescence effect'', which is different from co-fuorescence resulting from the mixing of NFI complex with FI complex. The relationship between the structure and properties is discussed.
Triple-chain Boron Clusters: Lengthening via Phosphorus Doping and Enhancing Stability through {P} by {CH} Substitution

Abstract:This theoretical study presents novel insights into the doping of boron clusters with an increasing number of dopant atoms, ranging from 1 to 4, that preserve the integrity of the original boron framework. The triple-chain forms of clusters B10 and B16 remain unchanged upon sequential addition of P atoms, showcasing a perfect isolobal substitution of {P} by {CH}. Similarities in the number of delocalized electrons are observed between pure and doped boron clusters, alongside the subsequent substitution of {P} by {CH}. All triple-chain structures exhibit high thermodynamic stability, having low vertical attachment energies and high vertical ionization energies. The lowest-lying isomer of B16P4 has thus a triple-chain shape instead of a tetrahedral Td form as previously reported. While an AdNDP analysis confirms the number of globally delocalized electrons, it differs much from a previous interpretation. The magnetic ring current maps support a double aromaticity of triple-chain structures. Electron counting rules established for triple-chain structures are verified. The particle-in-a-rectangular-box model elucidates the relationship between structure size and electron configuration and aids in understanding the transition from antiaromatic to aromatic configurations. The self-locking phenomenon is crucial for adhering to the triple-chain model and satisfying electron configuration requirements.

Abstract:While rare-earth borides represent a class of important materials in modem industries,there are few fundamental researches on their electronic structures and physicochemical properties.Recently,we have performed combined experimental and theoretical studies on rare-earth boron clusters and their cluster-assembled complexes,revealing a series of rare-earth inverse sandwich clusters with fascinating electronic structures and chemical bonding patterns.In this overview article,we summarize recent progresses in this area and provide a perspective view on the future development of rare-earth boride clusters.Understanding the electronic structures of these clusters helps to design materials of f-element (lanthanide and actinide) borides with critical physiochemical properties.
