Abstract:Carbon-atom extrusion from the ipso-position of a halobenzene ring (C6H5X; X=F, Cl, Br, I) and its coupling with a methylene ligand to produce acetylene is not confined to [LaCH2](+); also, the third-row transition-metal complexes [MCH2](+), M=Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Os, bring about this unusual transformation. However, substrates with substituents X=CN, NO2, OCH3, and CF3 are either not reactive at all or give rise to different products when reacted with [LaCH2](+). In the thermal gas-phase processes of atomic Ln(+) with C7H7Cl substrates, only those lanthanides with a promotion energy small enough to attain a 4f(n)5d(1)6s(1) configuration are reactive and form both [LnCl](+) and [LnC(5)H(5)Cl](+). Branching ratios and the reaction efficiencies of the various processes seem to correlate with molecular properties, like the bond-dissociation energies of the C-X or M+-X bonds or the promotion energies of lanthanides.
Expanded Inverse-Sandwich Complexes of Lanthanum Borides: La2B10- and La2B11-

Abstract:Inverse-sandwich structures have been observed recently for dilanthanide boride clusters, in which two Ln atoms sandwich a monocyclic B-x ring for x = 7-9. An interesting question is if larger Bx rings are possible to form such inverse-sandwich clusters. Here we address this question by investigating La2B10- and La2B11- using photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Photoelectron spectra of La2B10- and La2B11- show complicated, but well-resolved, spectral features that are used to compare with theoretical calculations. We have found that global minimum structures of the two clusters are based on the octa-boron ring. The global minimum of La2B10- consists of two chiral enantiomers with C-1 symmetry, which can be viewed as adding a B-2 unit off-plane to the B-8 ring, whereas that of La2B11- can be viewed as adding a B-3 unit in-plane to the B-8 ring in a second coordination shell. Chemical bonding analyses reveal localized B- B bonds on the edge of the clusters and delocalized bonds in the expanded boron frameworks. The interactions between the La atoms and the boron frameworks include the unique (d-p)delta bonding, which was found to be the key for inverse-sandwich complexes with monocyclic boron rings. The current study confirms that the largest monocyclic boron ring to form the inversesandwich structures is B-9 and provide insights into the structural evolutions of larger lanthanide boride clusters.

Abstract:Solid-state lanthanide (Ln) borides of the simple LnB(6) composition not only exhibit exciting physical behavior, in particular magnetic properties, but their electronic structure and chemical bonding are particularly intriguing as well. To shed more light on the latter, we have performed quantum-chemical (DFT+U) electronic-structure calculations and bonding analyses of the entire LnB(6) series with Ln from La to Lu. Trivially, the boron framework is held together by the B 2sp orbitals, and this framework bonds to the Ln atoms via covalent ionic interactions. The Ln 4f electrons, however, are decisive for the magnetic properties. In more detail, the effective charges of the Ln atoms as calculated by (Mulliken or Lowdin) occupation numbers of the 6s/5d/4f orbitals are compatible with experimentally assigned oxidation numbers. The shorter inter-octahedral B B bonds, dominated by 2s-2p interactions, turn out to be stronger than the intra-octahedral B B bonding with a more 2p-2p-like character. Interestingly, there are strong structural similarities between the LnB(6) motif studied here and gas-phase Ln(2)B(8) species showing inverse sandwich structures, and these similarities are also reflected in the electronic structure. In particular, Ln(2)B(8) is predicted to have a large electron affinity. Hence, this work aims at providing an intrinsic link between gas-phase complexes and solid-state crystal structures in order to better understand the former species.
Observation of highly stable and symmetric lanthanide octa-boron inverse sandwich complexes.

Abstract:While boron forms a wide range of metal borides with important industrial applications, there has been relatively little attention devoted to lanthanide boride clusters. Here we report a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical study on two octa-boron di-lanthanide clusters, Ln2B8- (Ln = La, Pr). We found that these clusters form highly stable inverse sandwich structures, [Ln-B8-Ln]-, with strong Ln and B8 bonding via interactions between the Ln 5d orbitals and the delocalized σ and π orbitals on the B8 ring. A (d-p)δ bond, involving the 5dδ and the antibonding π orbital of the B8 ring, is observed to be important in the Ln-B8 interactions. The highly symmetric inverse sandwich structures are overwhelmingly more stable than any other isomers. Upon electron detachment, the (d-p)δ orbitals become half-filled, giving rise to a triplet ground state for neutral La2B8 In addition to the two unpaired electrons in the (d-p)δ orbitals upon electron detachment, the neutral Pr2B8 complex also contains two unpaired 4f electrons on each Pr center. The six unpaired spins in Pr2B8 are ferromagnetically coupled to give rise to a septuplet ground state. The current work suggests that highly magnetic Ln…B8…Ln inverse sandwiches or 1D Ln…B8…Ln nanowires may be designed with novel electronic and magnetic properties.
La3B14-: an Inverse Triple-Decker Lanthanide Boron Cluster

Abstract:We report the observation of the first inverse triple-decker complex in a tri-lanthanide-doped boron cluster. Photoelectron spectroscopy of La3B14- reveals well-resolved photodetachment transitions. Quantum chemical studies show that the most stable structure of the La3B14- cluster exhibits a tilted La-B-8-La-B-8-La inverse triple-decker structure with two conjoined B-8 rings sharing a pair of B atoms due to strong inter-layer B-B bonding. The tilted structure enhances both B-B and B-La bonding, resulting in a highly stable inverse triple-decker structure. Theoretical calculations further show that multi-decker conjoined structures are viable as a new class of 1D lanthanide boron nanostructures.

Abstract:The density functional theory (DFT) has been used to determine the binding energies, ground state structures, electronic properties, and magnetic properties of Lan and LanO (n=2–12) clusters. For Lan, the lowest-energy structures of La4, La8, and La9 clusters are the new ones that have not been proposed in previous literature. These structures are more stable and are confirmed by CCSD(T) method. For LanO, we find that the O atom prefers to stay at the outside of the cluster, and the coordination number gradually increases with cluster size. Furthermore, the results for average magnetic moments of Lan clusters are in good agreement with experiment, implying that present treatments are reasonable and reliable. In addition, our results show that the ionic and covalent bonding characteristics are important in small La clusters.

Abstract:Here we reported the structures, electronic, spectral and thermodynamic properties of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) clusters using Crystal structure Analysis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) searching method and density functional theory (DFT). Results found that the lowest structures of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) possess the half-sandwich structure with Cs symmetry, respectively. Based on the lowest energy structures, the electronic properties are analyzed by calculating charge transfer, electron localization function and polarizability; the photoelectron spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra and UV-vis spectra are computationally simulated to facilitate their spectral characterizations. At last, thermodynamic properties are symmetrically investigated for doped systems. We believe that our research will provide useful motivation for further experimental and theoretical investigations of lanthanide-doped boron based nanomaterials.

Abstract:Abstract Lanthanide (Ln) elements are generally found in the oxidation state +II or +III, and a few examples of +IV and +V compounds have also been reported. In contrast, monovalent Ln(+I) complexes remain scarce. Here we combine photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to study Ln-doped octa-boron clusters (LnB 8 − , Ln = La, Pr, Tb, Tm, Yb) with the rare +I oxidation state. The global minimum of the LnB 8 − species changes from C s to C 7v symmetry accompanied by an oxidation-state change from +III to +I from the early to late lanthanides. All the C 7v -LnB 8 − clusters can be viewed as a monovalent Ln(I) coordinated by a η 8 -B 8 2− doubly aromatic ligand. The B 7 3− , B 8 2− , and B 9 − series of aromatic boron clusters are analogous to the classical aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, C 5 H 5 − , C 6 H 6 , and C 7 H 7 + , respectively, with similar trends of size and charge state and they are named collectively as “borozenes”. Lanthanides with variable oxidation states and magnetic properties may be formed with different borozenes.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusion Borane clusters and their derivatives have attracted extensive attention in inorganic chemistry due to their fascinating multi-center bonding patterns and physicochemical properties. Here we report a systematic theoretical investigation on the geometry, electronic structure and chemical bonding of BnXn0/2- (n = 4, 6; X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, At, Ts) clusters, attempting to explore their bonding features, exceptional stability and the ligand effect. We find that the electronic structure and stability of BnXn0/2- clusters can be tuned by the size of the boron cage and electronegativity of the ligand. Fragment orbital energy matching and orbital overlap are of great importance to the covalency of the cluster. In addition to the ionic electrostatic interaction that dominates the bonding interaction and decreases as the ligand becomes heavier, multi-center bonding covalency determined by the orbital interaction increases accordingly, attributing to the reducing electronegativity. The sigma-donations from the ligand to the boron cage as well as multi-center two-electron (nc-2e) bonding contribute to the sigma aromaticity and superb stability. This work reveals the foremost factors that determine the structure and stability of boron clusters, and provides insights into the nature of chemical bonding for species with boron cages and even bulk boron.
Lanthanides with Unusually Low Oxidation States in the PrB3- and PrB4- Boride Clusters

Abstract:Lanthanide elements typically exhibit a +III oxidation state (OS) in chemical compounds with a few in +IV or even +V OS. Although lanthanides with +II OS have been observed recently in organometallic compounds, +I OS is extremely rare. Using a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum theoretical study, we have found two low OS lanthanides in doped boron clusters, PrB3- and PrB4-. These two clusters are shown to have planar structures, in which the Pr atom is bonded to the aromatic boron clusters via two Pr-B σ bonds. Chemical bonding and electronic structure analyses reveal that the Pr atom is in a very low OS in the two boride clusters: +II in PrB3- and +I in PrB4-. The current finding suggests that there should exist a whole class of boride complexes featuring rather low-valent lanthanides and expands the frontier of lanthanide chemistry.

Abstract:Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (B-n(-)) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B-36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B-40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln(2)B(n)(-) (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

[La(eta(x)-B-x)la](-) (X=7-9): a New Class of Inverse Sandwich Complexes

Abstract:Despite the importance of bulk lanthanide borides, nanoclusters of lanthanide and boron have rarely been investigated. Here we show that lanthanide-boron binary clusters, La2Bx-, can form a new class of inverse-sandwich complexes, [Ln(eta(x)-B-x)Ln](-) (x = 7-9). Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the monocyclic B-x rings in the inverse sandwiches display similar bonding, consisting of three delocalized sigma and three delocalized pi bonds. Such monocyclic boron rings do not exist for bare boron clusters, but they are stabilized by the sandwiching lanthanide atoms. An electron counting rule is proposed to predict the sizes of the B-x ring that can form stable inverse sandwiches. A unique (d-p)delta bond is found to play important roles in the stability of all three inverse-sandwich complexes.

Abstract:The geometry structures, electronic properties, and chemical bonding of neutral, anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln (n = 1–5) clusters series were systematically studied by using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory for geometry optimization and using coupled cluster single point energy calculations at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(2df)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Comprehensive structure search and calculations demonstrate that the Al atoms tend to occupy the periphery sites of all alloy clusters, and the lowest–energy structures prefer low spin states (singlet or doublet). For small alloy cluster with total number of atoms ≤6, the clusters display the rare Anti-Van’t Hoff/Le Bel motifs planar tetracoordinate boron (ptB) and planar pentacoordinate boron (ppB), whereas, for total number of atoms ≥7, it shows 3D configuration. To evaluate the stabilities and electronic properties of the global minimum isomers of each stoichiometry at different charge states, the binding energy, fragmentation energy, second–order difference of the total energy, HOMO–LUMO gap, ionization potential, and electron affinity have been evaluated. We find that for anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln −/+ (n = 1–5) clusters, the odd–n systems are more stable than the even–n ones. AdNDP analyses of the chemical bonding of the global minimum structures indicate that the classical 2c–2e bonds and multicenter nc–2e (n = 3–9) delocalized bonds are responsible for the stability of boron–aluminum mixed alloy clusters.

Abstract:The introduction of transition-metal doping has engendered a remarkable array of unprecedented boron motifs characterized by distinctive geometries and bonding, particularly those heretofore unobserved in pure boron clusters. In this study, we present a perfect (no defects) boron framework manifesting an inherently high-symmetry, bowl-like architecture, denoted as MB16 - (M=Sc, Y, La). In MB16 -, the B16 is coordinated to M atoms along the C5v-symmetry axis. The bowl-shaped MB16 - structure is predicted to be the lowest-energy structure with superior stability, owing to its concentric (2 π+10 π) dual π aromaticity. Notably, the C5v-symmetry bowl-like B16 - is profoundly stabilized through the doping of an M atom, facilitated by strong d-pπ interactions between M and boron motifs, in conjunction with additional electrostatic stabilization by an electron transfer from M to the boron motifs. This concerted interplay of covalent and electrostatic interactions between M and bowl-like B16 renders MB16 - a species of exceptional thermodynamic stability, thus making it a viable candidate for gas-phase experimental detection.
Structural stability, electronic properties and graphical interatomic interactions of anionic boron clusters doped with one sodium atom

Abstract:Predicting the structure of pure boron and its doped clusters based on global structure search technology, and exploring its structural evolution model and bonding properties have been the focus of research. In the present study, the CALYPSO software and DFT calculations were used by us to search the structure of the previously unreported anionic NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters system that determined its ground-state structures. Through structural analysis, we found that NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters maintain a planar evolution pattern, and doped Na atoms are located in the convex position of the structure. In the stability analysis, we found two molecular wheel structures NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters, and the charge transfer analysis showed that the position of doped Na atoms greatly affected the bonding inside the clusters. The analysis of the bonding properties of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters shows that the Na-3s, Na-3p, and B-2p orbitals have high contributions, and the atoms in the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters have close interactions, forming strong Na-B and B-B covalent bonds. Finally, the interaction region indicator methodology suggests that not only chemical bonding interactions but also strong–weak interactions exist between B atoms of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters.

Abstract:Boron has been found to be able to form multiple bonds with lead. To probe Pb-B bonding, here we report an investigation of three Pb-doped boron clusters, PbB2-, PbB3O-, and PbB4O2-, which are produced by a laser ablation cluster source and characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The most stable structures of PbB2-, PbB3O-, and PbB4O2- are found to follow the formula, [PbB2(BO)n]- (n = 0-2), with zero, one, and two boronyl ligands coordinated to a triangular and aromatic PbB2 core, respectively. The PbB2- cluster contains a BB double bond and two Pb-B single bonds. The coordination of BO is observed to weaken Pb-B bonding but strengthen the BB bond in [PbB2(BO)n]- (n = 1, 2). The anionic [PbB2(BO)2]- and its corresponding neutral closed-shell [PbB2(BO)2] contain a BB triple bond. A low-lying Y-shaped isomer is also observed for PbB4O2-, consisting of a central sp2 hybridized B atom bonded to two boronyl ligands and a PbB unit.
Structural Determination of a Graphite/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Superlattice Observed in the Experiment.

Abstract:A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 angstrom, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 angstrom. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. This study on the atomic structure of the graphite/hBN superlattice lays a foundation for further research and application of this material.
