Abstract:Here we reported the structures, electronic, spectral and thermodynamic properties of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) clusters using Crystal structure Analysis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) searching method and density functional theory (DFT). Results found that the lowest structures of MBn −(M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) possess the half-sandwich structure with Cs symmetry, respectively. Based on the lowest energy structures, the electronic properties are analyzed by calculating charge transfer, electron localization function and polarizability; the photoelectron spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra and UV-vis spectra are computationally simulated to facilitate their spectral characterizations. At last, thermodynamic properties are symmetrically investigated for doped systems. We believe that our research will provide useful motivation for further experimental and theoretical investigations of lanthanide-doped boron based nanomaterials.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily investigates the structure, electronic properties, spectral characteristics, and thermodynamic properties of lanthanide-doped boron clusters (MB_n^−, M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9). Specifically: 1. **Research Background**: Over the past decade, nanomaterials have garnered extensive attention due to their potential applications in the fields of new energy and new materials. Particularly, boron clusters, as the only non-metal element in the main group IIIA of the periodic table, exhibit unusual physical and chemical properties and bonding characteristics due to their electronic deficiency. They have potential applications in stabilizing chemical insulators, high-energy fuels, and chemical hydrogen storage systems. 2. **Research Objectives**: Using the CALYPSO search method and density functional theory (DFT), the study investigates in detail the lowest energy structures, electronic properties, spectral characteristics, and thermodynamic properties of MB_n^− (M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) clusters. The aim is to understand the impact of lanthanide doping on the structure and properties of boron clusters and to provide theoretical guidance for further experimental and theoretical research. 3. **Main Findings**: - The lowest energy structures are half-sandwich structures with C_s symmetry, which can be viewed as slightly distorted structures formed by adding an M atom (M = La, Ce, Pr) to B_8^- or B_9^-. - Charge transfer analysis indicates that charge transfers from the M atom to the boron framework, with the electron distribution mainly controlled by the interaction of s, p, d, and f orbitals. - Electron localization function analysis shows that B-B bonds are primarily covalent, while M-B bonds are close to ionic. - The average dipole polarizability and polarizability anisotropy increase with the cluster size. Among them, CeB_8^- exhibits higher stability. 4. **Spectral Characteristics**: By simulating photoelectron spectra (PES), infrared spectra (IR), Raman spectra, and ultraviolet-visible spectra (UV-vis), the study provides a theoretical basis for the spectral characterization of these clusters. 5. **Thermodynamic Properties**: The formation enthalpies of all studied clusters (MB_n^−, M = La, Ce, Pr; n = 8, 9) are negative, indicating that they are thermodynamically stable. As the number of boron atoms increases, the thermal stability of the clusters improves, and both heat capacity and entropy increase. In summary, this study reveals the impact of lanthanide doping on the structure and properties of boron clusters and provides an important theoretical foundation for understanding the performance of lanthanide-doped boron-based nanomaterials.
