Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries with high theoretical energy density based on multi-electron redox reactions are strongly considered. The lithium disulfide/sulfide (Li2S2/Li2S, denoted as Li2S1/2) precipitation is critical to achieve high sulfur utilization. However, the kinetic effect on Li2S1/2 precipitation in a working battery has been few touched yet. Herein the current-density-dependent Li2S1/2 nucleation/growth is explored and such a dependence serves as the guiding principles for the construction of high-sulfur-loading/content Li–S batteries. Generally, the Li2S1/2 nucleation density is proportional to the two-thirds power of current density and the shift from high to low current density alters the Li2S1/2 precipitation pathway from surface deposition to solution-mediated growth. Besides, the in-solution growth rate is found to be restricted by the mobilities of polysulfide intermediates and Li2S1/2 in routine ether electrolytes. The rationalized guideline directed the design of a lightweight, high-surface-area, and open-pore conductive framework for sulfur cathodes, which enabled an extremely high sulfur content of 93.4 wt.% in the whole electrode and a high capacity (1269 mAh gS−2). The present work affords a kinetic understanding of the liquid–solid conversion in working Li–S batteries and optimization schemes for practical operation parameters.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most promising substitutes for the current Li-ion battery system as a next-generation storage system because of their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, challenges still exist for Li-S battery systems from being commercialized, one of which is the volume variation of the S-rich cathode during cycling. To provide an atomistic view of the factors causing the volume variation and subsequent change in the elastic properties, we present a systematic and detailed study of lithium polysulfides that are intermediate products at the S-rich cathode during cycling. The calculated results based on density functional theory find a small volume expansion of high-order lithium polysulfides, but a significantly large volume expansion of low-order polysulfides, which is consistent with the two-stage discharge process in the Li-S battery. During lithiation, the calculated elastic properties show an upward trend, which can essentially be attributed to the nature of the chemical bonding that changes from S-S covalent bonds to Li-S ionic bonds in going from Li2S8 to Li2S. Moreover, analysis of the electronic density of states shows smaller band gaps associated with the S-rich polysulfides, suggesting that they are easier to charge than the insulating Li,S. The results, therefore, provide a fundamental understanding of the changes that occurred at the cathode during lithiation and would be useful for the design of the next-generation cathode materials that can withstand significant stress and strain while enduring significant volume changes during the Li-S cell cycling.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries stand out the energy storage systems because of extremely high energy density (2600 W h Kg−1) and low-cost sulfur cathode. Unfortunately, the sluggish deposition from liquid Li polysulfides (LiPSs) to solid Li2S leads to mild power density and short cycle life. Understanding and regulating Li2S2/Li2S deposition are conceived to be importance to deliver second-plateau capacity in acceptable kinetics, which has the potential to operation Li–S batteries under electrolyte-lean conditions. This perspective aims to summarize the proposed models that can describe the nucleation and propagation of three-dimensional Li2S2/Li2S, as well as affords critical views how electrolyte dictates LiPS conversion from liquid to solid. It hopes to encourage necessary scaffold strategies and electrolyte formulations to further improve energy density and life span of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have received intensive attention in recent years due to their high theoretical energy density derived from the lithiation of sulfur. In the discharge process, sulfur transforms into lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) that dissolve in liquid electrolytes and then into insoluble Li2S precipitated on the electrode surface. The electronically and ionically insulating Li2S leads to two critical issues, including the sluggish reaction kinetics from LiPSs to Li2S and the passivation of the electrode. In this regard, controlling the Li2S deposition is significant for improving the performance of LSBs. In this perspective, we have summarized the recent achievements in regulating the Li2S deposition to enhance the performance of LSBs, including the solution-mediated growth of Li2S, sulfur host enhanced nucleation and catalysis induced kinetic improvement. Moreover, the challenges and possibilities for future research studies are discussed, highlighting the significance of regulating the Li2S deposition to realize the high electrochemical performance and promote the practical uses of LSBs.
Regulating Li 2 S Deposition by Ostwald Ripening in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted tremendous attention from both academia and industry for their high energy density and environmental benignity. However, the cell performance suffers from the passivation of the conductive matrix caused by uncontrolled lithium sulfide (Li2S) deposition. Therefore, regulation of Li2S deposition is essential to advanced Li-S batteries. In this work, the role of temperature in regulating Li2S deposition is comprehensively investigated. At room temperature (25 °C), Li2S exhibits a two-dimensional (2D) growth mode. The dense and insulating Li2S film covers the conductive surface rapidly, inhibiting the charge transfer for subsequent polysulfide reduction. Consequently, the severe passivation of the conductive surface degrades the cell performance. In contrast, three-dimensional (3D) Li2S is formed at a high temperature (60 °C) because of a faster Ostwald ripening rate at an elevated temperature. The passivation of the conductive matrix is mitigated effectively, and the cell performance is enhanced significantly, thanks to the formation of 3D Li2S. Ostwald ripening is also valid for Li-S cells under rigorous conditions. The cell working at 60 °C achieves a high specific capacity of 1228 mA h g-1 under the conditions of high S loading and a lean electrolyte (S loading = 3.6 mg cm-2, electrolyte/sulfur ratio = 3 μL mg-1), which is substantially higher than that at 25 °C. This work enriches the intrinsic understanding of Li2S deposition in Li-S batteries and provides facile strategies for improving the cell performance under practical conditions.

Abstract:In lithium-sulfur (Li-S) chemistry, the electrically/ionically insulating nature of sulfur and Li2S leads to sluggish electron/ion transfer kinetics for sulfur species conversion. Sulfur and Li2S are recognized as solid at room temperature, and solid-liquid phase transitions are the limiting steps in Li-S batteries. Here, we visualize the distinct sulfur growth behaviors on Al, carbon, Ni current collectors and demonstrate that (i) liquid sulfur generated on Ni provides higher reversible capacity, faster kinetics, and better cycling life compared to solid sulfur; and (ii) Ni facilitates the phase transition (e.g., Li2S decomposition). Accordingly, light-weight, 3D Ni-based current collector is designed to control the deposition and catalytic conversion of sulfur species toward high-performance Li-S batteries. This work provides insights on the critical role of the current collector in determining the physical state of sulfur and elucidates the correlation between sulfur state and battery performance, which will advance electrode designs in high-energy Li-S batteries.

Abstract:AbstractThe uncontrolled polysulfide shuttling and lithium dendrite growth greatly impede the practical implementation of Li–S batteries. These issues can be alleviated by constructing an artificial layer that immobilizes soluble polysulfides and regulates Li+ flux. Here, a layer‐expanded lithium montmorillonite is fabricated through molecular intercalation to serve as a dual regulator for Li–S batteries. The lithiophilic montmorillonite, with its ordered and expanded Li+ diffusion channels, exhibits a high transference number, and promotes homogeneous Li deposition. Additionally, its moderate adsorption of polysulfides, combined with favorable Li diffusion behavior, enhanced the redox kinetics of sulfur species. This unique structure enables a prolonged lifespan of 1000 cycles at 0.5C with a low capacity decay of 0.04% per cycle for practical Li–S batteries.
Regulating the Li2S deposition by grain boundaries in metal nitrides for stable lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Catalysis is a fundamental solution in suppressing the shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), which is essential to the practical applications of lithium-sulfur batteries with high energy density. However, the uncontrollable deposition of electronic and ionic insulative Li2S always passivates the catalyst surface for the continuous LiPS conversion. Herein, we propose an effective method to regulate Li2S deposition to avoid the catalyst surface passivation by introducing grain boundaries (GBs) in the catalyst. Hollow microspheres composed of MoN-Mo2N heterostructure with abundant and highly accessible GBs were prepared as the models. The results show GBs act as the two-dimensional nucleation sites, guiding the fast nucleation and three-dimensional deposition of Li2S around them, avoiding the formation of dense Li2S coating on their surface. Thus, the high capacity Li2S deposition with enhanced conversion kinetics was achieved. The interlayer composed of the above catalyst and carbon nanotube effectively suppresses the shuttling of LiPSs and promotes their fast conversion, leading to a low capacity decay of 0.049% per cycle at 1 C for 800 cycles for the assembled battery. With a higher sulfur loading of 4.7 mg cm−2 under 0.5 C, high capacity retention of 77.2% after 200 cycles could also be achieved.

Abstract:The uncontrolled deposition behavior and sluggish conversion kinetics of the discharging product (solid Li2S) severely deteriorate the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, especially under high S loading and low-temperature conditions. Herein, a multifunctional S cathode host consisting of ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) confined in hollow porous carbon spheres (ZnS@HPCS) is synthesized via a unique capillary force-driven melting-diffusion strategy. The porous carbon shell of ZnS@HPCS provides a space-confined reservoir for soluble polysulfides and solid Li2S, while the intracavity ZnS NPs trap polysulfides, induce Li2S inside deposition, and accelerate conversion kinetics. Thus, Li-S batteries with ZnS@HPCS-S cathodes exhibit excellent electrochemical performance at both room and low temperatures (-40 °C) and high reversible capacities under high S loading (5.2 mg cm-2). Furthermore, Li2S nucleation/deposition, in situ Raman, and theoretical analyses reveal the underlying mechanism. This work offers fundamental insights into regulating Li2S deposition and designing S hosts for high-performance Li-S batteries.
A universal performance-enhancing method for Li-S batteries: the cathode material of Li2S@Li2S2@Li2S6 double-shell structure

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) as a cathode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, one of the most promising advanced batteries in the future, has received tremendous attention in the past decades. However, developing the practical Li 2 S cathode confronts challenges of low conductivity for Li-ions and electrons, high sensitivity to environmental moisture, big overpotential barrier to electrochemical activation, and poor cyclability due to the shuttle effect of intermediate species. This article herein reports a simple and effective strategy for making Li 2 S@Li 2 S 2 @Li 2 S 6 double-shelled microparticles, which can significantly mitigate these problems. They are synthesized by dissolving Li 2 S together with S in dimethoxyethane, then drying off the solvent, and finally calcining the collected solid. Compared with pure Li 2 S, such a double-shell material presents a 26.7% improvement in cycling capacity, 0.5 V lower in activation overpotential, and prolonged tolerance in the ambient environment. The density functional theory calculation shows that the performance enhancement lies in the higher stability of Li 2 S 6 in contact with moisture and some autocatalytic effect of Li 2 S 2 @Li 2 S 6 . Such a double-shell structure becomes a universal performance-enhancing approach when being combined with other means, such as cathodes composited with catalytic MoS 2 , separators modified with selenium-doped sulfurized-polyacrylonitrile/montmorillonite, electrolytes containing fluorenone additive, and Li anodes coated with a layer of Li 3 N. The corresponding capacity retention shows up to 80% improvement compared with pure Li 2 S.

Abstract:Lithium/sulfur (Li/S) battery has been regarded as promising candidate for next-generation energy storage systems due to the high energy density. The big obstacle to realize the practical application of Li/S battery is to synchronously accelerate the redox kinetics and restrain the dissolution of polysulfides into the electrolyte. On this account, ZnS nanotubes with abundant sulfur vacancies (ZnS1−x) are constructed and deposited onto a freestanding carbon cloth electrode for Li/S batteries. The combination of architectural and sulfur-vacancy engineering regulates the electronic structure of ZnS as well as its interactions with active sulfur, thus by facilitates ion/electron transfer, immobilizes lithium polysulfide, and accelerates sulfur reaction kinetics. As a consequence, a capacity of 1043 mAh g−1 is obtained under a low current density of 0.2 C, as well as a capacity retention of 524 mAh g−1 over 500 cycles at 1 C. This work presents a convenient and effective material design strategy to improve the performance of Li/S batteries and promote the practical process.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, due to the high theoretical energy density, are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for breaking the limitations of energy‐storage system based on Li‐ion batteries. Tremendous efforts have been made to meet the challenge of high‐performance Li–S batteries, in which a sulfur loading of above 5 mg cm−2 delivers an areal capacity higher than 5 mAh cm−2 without compromising specific capacity and cycling stability for practical applications. However, serious problems have been exposed during the scaling up of the sulfur loading. In this review, based on mechanistic insights into structural configuration, catalytic conversion, and interfacial engineering, the problems and corresponding strategies in the development of high‐loading Li–S batteries are highlighted and discussed, aiming at bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical cell‐level designs. Stemming from the current achievements, future directions targeting the high‐energy‐density Li–S batteries for commercialization are proposed.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are one of the most promising rechargeable storage devices due to the high theoretical energy density. However, the low areal sulfur loading impedes their commercial development. Herein, a 3D free-standing sulfur cathode scaffold is rationally designed and fabricated by coaxially coating polar Ti3C2Tx flakes on sulfur-impregnated carbon cloth (Ti3C2Tx@S/CC) to achieve high loading and high energy density Li-S batteries, in which, the flexible CC substrate with highly porous structure can accommodate large amounts of sulfur and ensure fast electron transfer, while the outer-coated Ti3C2Tx can serve as a polar and conductive protective layer to further promote the conductivity of the whole electrode, achieve physical blocking and chemical anchoring of lithium-polysulfides as well as catalyze their conversion. Due to these advantages, at a sulfur loading of 4 mg cm−2, Li-S cells with Ti3C2Tx@S/CC cathodes can deliver outstanding cycling stability (746.1 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C), superb rate performance (866.8 mAh g−1 up to 2 C) and a high specific energy density (564.2 Wh kg−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C). More significantly, they also show the commercial potential that can compete with current lithium-ion batteries due to the high areal capacity of 6.7 mAh cm−2 at the increased loading of 8 mg cm−2.

Abstract:The high theoretical energy density of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries makes them an alternative battery technology to lithium ion batteries. However, Li-S batteries suffer from low sulfur loading, poor charge transport, and dissolution of lithium polysulfide. In our study, we use the lithiated S, Li2S, as the cathode material, coupled with electrospun TiO2-impregnated hollow carbon nanofibers (TiO2-HCFs), which serve as the conductive agent and protective barrier for Li2S in Li-S batteries. TiO2-HCFs provide much improved electron/ionic conductivity and serve as a physical barrier, which prevents the dissolution of lithium polysulfides. The Li2S/TiO2-HCF composite delivers a discharge capacity of 851 mA h gLi2S-1 at 0.1C and the bilayer TiO2-HCFs/Li2S/TiO2-HCF composite delivers a high specific capacity of 400 mA h gLi2S-1 at 5C.

Abstract:Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have recently raised worldwide attention owning to the high specific theoretical energy density of sulfur (2600Wh kg-1), the low cost and the wide availability of sulfur. However, the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries has been hindered by several challenges, such as the shuttling of polysulfide intermediates, the large volume expansion of sulfur during charge/discharge and the dendrites formation on Li-anode. In this talk, we will introduce our recent investigation about Li-S batteries, including physical and chemical immobilization of sulfur to improve cycling stability, segregator optimization to minimize the shuttling effect and design of ionic liquids based electrolyte system to reduce the self-discharge. Finally, we introduce a lithium-ion sulfur battery based on a Li2S cathode using a dual-phase electrolyte (Li2S/electrolyte-1/LISICON/electrolyte-2/Li) and then replaced the Li anode with Al and graphite, which demonstrates a proof of concept of metal Li free Li-ion Sulfur battery. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) deposition regime of insulating lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a major obstacle to achieve high reversible capacity in the conventional glyme-based lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries as it leads to rapid loss of active electrode surface and low sulfur utilization. Achieving three-dimensional (3D) growth of Li2S is therefore considered to be necessary, but the available strategies are mainly based on the electrolyte manipulations, which inevitably lead to added complexity of the electrode-electrolyte compatibility, and in particular, instability of the lithium anode. In this work, we have developed a heterogeneous polysulfide mediator composed of discrete Mo5N6 anchored on graphene, which functions on the cathode side, to regulate the deposition mode of Li2S. Mo5N6 can efficiently boost the formation of Li2S as demonstrated by a series of experimental and computational results. More importantly, the discrete distribution of Mo5N6 nucleants on graphene postpones the merging of adjacent Li2S nuclei to promote their isotropic growth. Thus, 3D deposits of Li2S is guided by the heterogeneous mediator. Benefiting from these unique superiorities, Li-S cells with high rate capability of 954 mAh g-1 at 2 C and long cycle life exceeding 1000 cycles are realized without advanced lithium anode protection.

Abstract:Nowadays, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered as one of the most promising next-generation rechargeable batteries, owing to their high theoretical specific capacity of 1672 mAh g−1, high energy density of 2600 Wh kg−1, low-cost and abundant resources. However, the commercial application of Li-S batteries is still hindered by several problems, including insulativity of element sulfur, dissolution of polysulfides and large volume expansion. In addition, sulfur cathodes need be paired with metallic lithium, which tends to form dendrites on the anode surface during cycling resulting in safety problems. Therefore, fully lithiated state of sulfur-lithium sulfide (Li2S) is advantageous over sulfur, because it can paired with metal-free anodes (e.g. graphite, silicon and Sn) avoiding safety problems. In addition, Li2S shows a high theoretical specific capacity of 1166 mAh g−1 and a high melting point of 938°C. Moreover, when Li2S convers to S companying with volume shrinkage, which will not only creates enough space for volumetric expansion but also makes the structure more stable. However, similar to sulfur cathode, low conductivity of Li2S, low active material loading and polysulfide dissolution Li2S limit application of Li2S for high performance batteries. Consequently, it is important to introduce Li2S into three dimensional conductive matrix/host for high performance. Herein, we construct a 3D conductive network with high loading Li2S through a facile liquid solution-evaporation. The 3D conductive network not only possesses a hierarchical architecture with abundant macroporous channels and exhibits a high surface area, which provides enough reaction sites to load and stabilize high-loading Li2S, but also improves the electronic conductivity of Li2S and demonstrates pronounced electrochemical performance with enhanced cycle stability and a good capacity retention.
Hierarchical Micro‐Nanoclusters of Bimetallic Layered Hydroxide Polyhedrons as Advanced Sulfur Reservoir for High‐Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Rational construction of sulfur electrodes is essential in pursuit of practically viable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, bimetallic NiCo‐layered double hydroxide (NiCo‐LDH) with a unique hierarchical micro‐nano architecture is developed as an advanced sulfur reservoir for Li–S batteries. Compared with the monometallic Co‐layered double hydroxide (Co‐LDH) counterpart, the bimetallic configuration realizes much enriched, miniaturized, and vertically aligned LDH nanosheets assembled in hollow polyhedral nanoarchitecture, which geometrically benefits the interface exposure for host–guest interactions. Beyond that, the introduction of secondary metal intensifies the chemical interactions between layered double hydroxide (LDH) and sulfur species, which implements strong sulfur immobilization and catalyzation for rapid and durable sulfur electrochemistry. Furthermore, the favorable NiCo‐LDH is architecturally upgraded into closely packed micro‐nano clusters with facilitated long‐range electron/ion conduction and robust structural integrity. Due to these attributes, the corresponding Li–S cells realize excellent cyclability over 800 cycles with a minimum capacity fading of 0.04% per cycle and good rate capability up to 2 C. Moreover, highly reversible areal capacity of 4.3 mAh cm−2 can be achieved under a raised sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2. This work provides not only an effective architectural design but also a deepened understanding on bimetallic LDH sulfur reservoir for high‐performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising energy‐storage devices because of their high theoretical energy densities. However, the practical application of Li–S batteries is still impeded by the poor cycling performance and rate capability at practical conditions. In order to improve the performance of practical Li–S batteries, a hierarchical Mo2C nanocluster/carbon nanosheets hybrid based hollow spherical material (Mo2C/CHS) is designed and prepared. The hollow spheres composed of stacked carbon nanosheets can facilitate the infiltration of electrolyte. The ultrasmall and highly conductive Mo2C nanocrystals are confined in the carbon nanosheets and expose more active sites for anchoring and conversion of lithium polysulfides and increase the number of the nuclei for Li2S2/Li2S precipitation. Benefitting from the synergistic effects, Mo2C/CHS greatly promotes electrochemical kinetics in Li–S batteries with high sulfur loading (5 mg cm−2). Even under lean electrolyte conditions (E/S = 7 μL mgsulfur−1), the Li–S batteries with Mo2C/CHS added exhibit a discharge capacity of 904 mAh g−1 at the high current rate of 0.5 C, and with 894 mAh g−1 maintained after 200 cycles. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the electrochemical processes and guides the rational design of host and additive materials for practical Li–S batteries.
