Abstract:AbstractThe high-catalytic bifunctional Co nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in N- and S-codoped carbon (Co@NSC) with precisely regulated electronic structure due to sulfur dopant were simply and successfully synthesized to facilitate intrinsically sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR and OER). The Co@NSC electrocatalysts with relatively high defected structure display high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.858 V, low OER overpotential (ηOER) of 339 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and excellent stability originating from core–shell structure, exceeding the performance reported in most literatures. Expectedly, the assembled zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with Co@NSC as cathode catalysts show high power density (141 mW cm−2), low charge–discharge voltage gap and superior cycle reversibility. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculation verifies S dopant can tailor charge density and p-band center. More importantly, the ORR and OER overpotential (ηORR and ηOER) of Co@NSC is greatly reduced via DFT calculation. Consequently, the strengthened bifunctional catalytic activity originates from the redistribution of charge density and more positive p-band center via S dopant. This investigation provides an experimental and theoretical guidance for designing and synthesizing high-active transition metal-containing heteroatoms-doped carbon electrocatalysts.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a pivotal role in regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries. In this contribution, less active CeO2 is introduced for regulating the ORR/OER bifunctional activity of Co3O4@N-doped carbon (NC). The introduced CeO2 plays essential roles in increasing the surface contents of Co2+, Co3+ and N species in CeO2/Co3O4@NC for ORR/OER processes, while still maintaining hierarchical porosity and large specific surface area. Furthermore, the surface acid-base properties for the adsorption of oxygen molecules (for the ORR) and activation of water molecules (for the OER) and the charge transfer efficiency are also improved by the introduced CeO2. As a result, significantly enhanced ORR/OER bifunctional activity is achieved for the optimal and desired electrocatalyst, i.e., CeO2/Co3O4@NC. Its bifunctional activity is comparable or even superior to that of the benchmarked 20 wt% Pt/C (for the ORR) and IrO2 (for the OER), respectively. In the applications of Zn-air batteries, the battery with CeO2/Co3O4@NC still exhibits higher performance than the battery with mixed 20 wt% Pt/C + IrO2, due to its outstanding bifunctional activity toward the ORR and OER.

Abstract:Co-Nd2O3/N-doped carbon (NC) as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst was synthesized by annealing a bimetal precursor (Co, Nd). It exhibits a nanostructure of Co-Nd2O3 hybrid nanoparticles coated with NC shells. The introduced Nd2O3 is beneficial to obtain high ratios of O vacancy/total O and graphitic-N/total N and modify the Lewis acidic property of Co-Nd2O3/NC-700, thus benefiting the OER activity. Besides, not only high Co2+/total Co and pyridinic-N/total N ratios, but also the enhanced Lewis base property is achieved after the introduction of Nd2O3, which is favorable for the ORR activity. As a result, the optimal Co-Nd2O3/NC-700 exhibits the enhanced OER/ORR activity. Especially, the OER activity is remarkably improved, thus leading to the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity with low Delta E of similar to 0.86 V. Furthermore, the Zn-air battery with Co-Nd2O3/NC-700 shows a high specific capacity of similar to 613.6 mA h g(Zn)(-1) and superior charge-discharge cycling durability.

Abstract:Zinc-air battery is one of the most promising next-generation energy conversion and storage systems. Green and low-cost catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity are desired to meet the requirements of Zinc-air batteries. Herein, poly-active centric Co3O4-CeO2/Co-N-C (ketjenblack carbon) catalysts were prepared by a facile method. The Co3O4 and CeO2 nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on the surface of Co and N doped carbon support. The half-wave potential of Co3O4-CeO2/Co-N-C in the rotating disk electrode testing is close to that of Pt/C. The Zn-air battery using Co3O4-CeO2/Co-N-C as the cathode catalyst can provide a high specific capacity of 728 mA h g−1 at 20 mA cm−2 and maintain a stable discharge voltage. The remarkable catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect among Co3O4, CeO2 and Co-N-C, the outstanding electrical conductivity and the large surface area. Benefitting from the high catalytic activity, environmental friendliness and the facile synthesis process, Co3O4-CeO2/Co-N-C catalyst lends itself well to a great prospect in the application of metal-air batteries.

Abstract:It remains challenging to achieve further breakthroughs in the development of durable bifunctional air cathode electrocatalysts for increasing the cycling life of rechargeable Zn-air battery (RZAB). Herein, d-band gap narrowing strategy is proposed to significantly boost the electrocatalytic activity and stability of spinel Co3O4 for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions. In situ Raman spectroscopy finds that the Ce atom substitution can significantly improve the durability and corrosion resistance of electrocatalysts in harsh alkaline electrolytes. Synchrotron X-ray absorption fine structure reveals that the Co3+/Co2+ ratio of Co3O4 can be tuned with Ce introduction, which is beneficial to optimize the adsorption/desorption of the intermediates over Co-oh(3+) active sites. Density functional theory calculations further confirm the reduced gap between Co d-band and O p-band centers, increased electrical conductivity, together with the deepened valence band maximum of Co sites in Ce-doped Co3O4. Thereby, the optimized RZAB with Ce-Co3O4 delivers excellent long-term durability (290 h) and large specific capacity (876.3 Wh kg(Zn)(-1), which possesses great prospects in all-solid-state flexible RZAB devices.

Abstract:The construction of a high performance and stable non-precious metal-air-cathode is of great significance for a Zn-air battery (ZAB). Herein, 3D nanosheets consisting of N-doped carbon conglutinated CoFe alloy nanoparticles grown on carbon cloth (CoFe@NC/CC) have been prepared through simple electrodeposition and subsequent thermal decomposition. The cathode showed excellent activity and stability for the bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), due to the synergic effect of the CoFe alloy and the N-doped carbon conglutinated structures. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the introduction of the N-doped carbon structures can greatly weaken the O-2 adsorption energy on the CoFe alloy nanoparticles, thus enhancing the bifunctional ORR/OER activity of the catalyst. As a binder-less self-supporting electrode, the assembled liquid ZAB showed a high open circuit voltage of 1.469 V, and it could be stably cycled for more than 400 cycles with a charge-discharge voltage gap of 0.77 V at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), surpassing the performance of Pt/C + RuO2/C benchmarks and other reported CoFe-based electrocatalysts. Furthermore, the all-solid-state ZAB was shown to be a battery with good flexibility for wearable electronics, satisfying the requirements of next-generation sustainable active electronics.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts with high activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential and desired for metal-air batteries, fuel cells, water-splitting and CO2 reduction. Here, a series of Co-CoxO/N-doped Carbon (NC) is developed as bifunctional electrocatalysts via the pyrolysis of a simple physical mixture of cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and carbon black (CB). The obtained electrocatalysts exhibit considerably enhanced bifunctional activity as compared to the pure MOF derived counterpart. The essential roles of added CB in boosting the bifunctional activity are investigated. With the addition of CB, the surface concentrations of active pyridinic-N and graphitic-N for ORR and the surface CoIII/CoII ratios for OER are increased. Furthermore, the charge transfer efficiency and the electrochemically active surface areas (ECSAs) are also enhanced for the resulting electrocatalyst. The optimized Co-CoO-Co3O4/NC exhibits excellent bifunctional activity and durability, surpassing the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (for ORR) and IrO2 (for OER). When applied in an air electrode, the corresponding Zn-air battery with Co-CoO-Co3O4/NC presents the better performance than that with 20 wt% Pt/C. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
In Situ Encapsulation of Core-Shell-structured Co@Co3O4 into Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Polyhedra As a Bifunctional Catalyst for Rechargeable Zn-air Batteries

Abstract:The traditional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts are mainly noble metal-based materials, but their scarcity and instability impede their practical applications, especially in Zn-air batteries. Hence, identifying a bifunctional catalyst with low-cost and high-stability is very crucial for Zn-air batteries. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare core-shell-structured Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped carbon polyhedra by carbonization and controlled oxidation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are then applied as a bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries. Using such a configuration, enhanced performances, including a high power density of similar to 64 mW cm(-2), a stable voltage profile over 80 h battery operation with four mechanical recharges, a small discharge/charge overpotential of similar to 0.66 V and a long-life of 100 cycles for 200 h operation at 5 mA cm(-2), have been achieved. These excellent performances can be attributed to abundant graphited carbon and CNTs, high N-doping, plentiful pores, the synergy between the semiconductive Co3O4-coating layer and the conductive Co bulk, and the uniform Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles in this catalyst which effectively improve electrical conductivity/ion transfer and further concertedly promote the catalytic activity towards the ORR/OER. Moreover, the belt-shaped polymer Zn-air battery with this catalyst also shows good electrochemical stability under different deformations.

Abstract:As one of the most promising candidates for power sources, the rechargeable Zn-air batteries have attracted much attention due to their high energy density. However, Zn-air batteries suffer from sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during the discharge and charge process. Herein, a FeN2-doped carbon with a unique three-dimensional (3D) porous structure (CeO2-FeNC-5) was synthesized as an electrocatalyst for Zn-air batteries by one-step pyrolysis and introducing CeO2 to tune the coordination environment of Fe atoms. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results indicate that the introduction of CeO2 can convert FeN3 moieties into FeN2 moieties. The CeO2-FeNC-5 exhibits a more positive half-wave potential of 0.902 V for ORR, and a low overpotential of 0.327 V at 10 mA cm-2 for OER. Furthermore, the Zn-air battery with CeO2-FeNC-5 achieve a maximum power density (169 mW cm-2), a high open voltage platform (1.47 V) and superior cycling stability (200 h). The unique 3D porous structure provides channels for mass transport and exposes sufficient active sites to facilitate the ORR and OER processes. Calculations prove that FeN2 moieties are beneficial to O2 adsorption on Fe/N-doped carbon surface. This work provides an effective strategy for designing and synthesizing FeNx-doped carbon matrix electrocatalysts for sustainable metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts towards sluggish oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) are of great significance for cathode catalysis of rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report a one-pot pyrolysis strategy to construct binary transition metal oxide (TMO) interfaces on a nitrogen doped porous carbon framework (CN) for bifunctional oxygen reaction catalysis. The constructed Fe3O4/Co3O4 interfaces not only help promote the stabilization of Fe2+ ions, but also generate abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of composite catalysts (Fe3O4/Co3O4-CN), which boost the intrinsic oxygen reaction activity. The Fe3O4/Co3O4-CN catalyst exhibits a bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with a significantly lowered potential difference (Delta E) of 0.68 V between the half-wave potential of the ORR (E-1/2) and the potential of the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) (E-j=10), rivaling the best performance of previously reported bifunctional TMO catalysts to the best of our knowledge. The rechargeable Zn-air battery with Fe3O4/Co3O4-CN as the cathode catalyst exhibits superior performance with an energy density of 1045.82 W h kg(Zn)(-1) and a peak power density of 105.7 mW cm(-2), as well as excellent cycling stability (over 80 h at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2)), demonstrating our new bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst as a promising candidate for practical energy storage applications.
Enhanced oxygen reduction and evolution in N-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Abstract:In this study, a facile surface treatment on polypyrrole (PPy) nanofiber with ZnCl2 solution is employed to fabricate N-doped carbon anchored with metallic Co (denoted as Co/N-CZn) via gas-transport approach. Structural characterizations reveal that the intrinsic structure of Co/N-CZn in terms of its morphology, pore structure and defects have been greatly modulated by such a surface treatment, resulting in a higher loading amount of metallic Co, larger surface area and increased pyridinic N and Co-N species as efficient active sites. Benefiting from the structural modulation, Co/N-CZn exhibits outstanding ORR activity and kinetics with a positive half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs. RHE, a high kinetic current density (Jk) value of 36.6 mA cm-2 at 0.85 V vs. RHE, and a small Tafel slope of 55.9 mV dec-1, which even outperforms commercial Pt/C. Moreover, enhanced OER performance is also achieved in Co/N-CZn, with an overpotential of 280 mV at 10 mA cm-2, surpasses that of commercial RuO2 (295 mV). Finally, Co/N-CZn shows promise for substitution of commercial Pt/C and RuO2 to drive both liquid and solid-state rechargeable Zn-air batteries with a high peak power density of 196 mW cm-2 and 130 mW cm-2.

Abstract:Searching for high active, low cost and durable catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenge in developing metal-air battery cathodes. Herein, we proposed a novel bifunctional catalyst derived from the pyrolysis of Co/Fe/Zn trimetallic zeolitic imidazolite framework. The obtained Co@CoFe0.01-N-C catalyst displays desirable activity for both ORR and OER (E-1/2 = 0.844 V, E-j=10 = 1.654 V). The Zn-air battery equipped with Co@CoFe0.01-N-C catalyst on the cathode exhibits a high peak power density of 174.1 mW cm(2), which is much superior than that of commercial 20% Pt/C (87.6 mW cm(2)). Furthermore, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with designed catalysts demonstrate higher peak power density and better cycling stability than those with commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 . According to structure characterizations and electrochemical tests, the interaction of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe contributes to the superior performance for oxygen electrocatalysis. In addition, large specific surface areas, porous structures and interconnected three-dimensional carbon networks also play important roles in improving oxygen electrocatalysis. This work provides inspiration for rational design of advanced oxygen electrocatalysts and paves a way for the practical application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with superior catalytic performance is essential for the large-scale application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, a cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst Co-UA-OCB with heavy nitrogen content has been synthesized. The N-doped graphene sheets from carbonized uric acid wrapped on the particles of carbon black to construct a hierarchical microstructure. Benefiting from the higher electrochemical active surface area and well dispersed cobalt particles, the catalyst exhibits a remarkable bifunctional activity toward oxygen reduction (ORR) and evolution reactions (OER) with 0.834 V of half-wave potential for ORR and 1.621 V of OER potential at 10 mA cm2. The rechargeable Zn-air battery fabricated with Co-UA-OCB as the air electrode, delivers 142 mW cm−2 of maximum power density, 799 mAh g−1 of specific capacity, 1000 mWh g−1 of energy density and 1.24–1.29 V of running voltage at 10 mA cm2 of current density. The battery exhibits excellent durability and rechargeability, indicating the Co-UA-OCB is a promising candidate to replace the precious metal-based electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Developing efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is crucial for enhancing the performance of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). In this study, cobalt/cobalt oxides embedded in N-doped carbon nanofibers (Co/CoOx/NCNFs) were synthesized through a combination of electrospinning and annealing processes. The resulting Co/CoOx/NCNFs catalysts feature abundant CoNx and CoOx active species, leveraging the large specific surface area of nanofibers to facilitate oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimized Co/CoOx/NCNFs-0.1 achieved a half-wave potential (vs. RHE) of 0.82 V and required only 429 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 in a typical three-electrode system with 0.1 M KOH using an electrochemical workstation equipped with a pine instruments rotator, outperforming the Pt/C+RuO2. The assembled ZABs exhibited high specific capacity (771 mAh gZn -1), substantial power density (981.6 mWh gZn -1), and long-term stability (>325 h). In situ Raman spectroscopy confirmed that the electrocatalytic processes involve the redox activity of Co (II and III) species derived from abundant CoNx and CoOx, elaborating the origin of the catalysts' exceptional oxygen electrocatalysis performance. This work not only presents a straightforward and effective approach for producing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts in ZABs but also sheds light on the catalytic mechanisms underlying ORR and OER for CoNx/CoOx-based oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts to overcome the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a significant challenge. Herein, Fe 80 -ZIF-67@CN, a CoFe alloy nitrogen-doped multilayer porous carbon electrocatalysts is designed and successful prepared, natural eggshell membrane (ESM) as precursor, Graphitic carbon nitride (G-C 3 N 4 ) as nitrogen source, and a small amount of iron and cobalt salts as non-noble metal sources. Due to the synergistic effect between the CoFe alloy and FeN X , CoN X sites, the Fe 80 -ZIF-67@CN electrocatalysts display a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.86 V (ORR), an overpotential (E j10 ) of 339 mV (OER), and a potential difference (∆E) of 0.71 V. In addition, the Tafel slopes for the ORR and OER are 90.36 mV dec −1 and 52.35 mV dec −1 , respectively. More importantly, the Zn-air battery assembled with Fe 80 -ZIF-67@CN exhibits a large power density of 126.47 mW cm −2 , the open circuit voltage (OCP) of 1.54 V and excellent stability without significant voltage changes even after 176 h, which are superior to that of 20 % Pt/C + RuO 2 . This work paves a new design option for oxygen electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts (SACs) with unique structure gain much interest in the field of electrocatalysis and show a broad application prospect in long-life rechargeable Zn-air batteries. However, ingenious design and preparation of bi-metal SACs is still difficult to further enhance the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity. Herein, modified zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (SiO2@Fe-ZIF-8/67) was facilely designed to preparation atomically dispersed Fe and Co doping 3D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (). The Fe or Co single atoms are identified to be coordinated with N atoms and form FeN4, CoN4 or N3Fe-CoN3 anchored on 3D defect carbon, which act as reactive sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Through synergetic coupling effect, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with ORR/OER potential gap of 0.80 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate the synergistic effect between Fe and Co in towards the enhancing ORR activity. The as-prepared catalyst assembled Zn-air battery shows a maximum power density, and superb cycling stability, surpassing that based on commercial Pt/C+IrO2. Results from this study may provide a facile method for precious control of dual-metal single sites doped carbon with highly activity and durability for bifunctional electrocatalysis.
