Abstract:<p>Developing cost-effective bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with superior catalytic performance is essential for the large-scale application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, a cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst Co-UA-OCB with heavy nitrogen content has been synthesized. The N-doped graphene sheets from carbonized uric acid wrapped on the particles of carbon black to construct a hierarchical microstructure. Benefiting from the higher electrochemical active surface area and well dispersed cobalt particles, the catalyst exhibits a remarkable bifunctional activity toward oxygen reduction (ORR) and evolution reactions (OER) with 0.834 V of half-wave potential for ORR and 1.621 V of OER potential at 10 mA cm2. The rechargeable Zn-air battery fabricated with Co-UA-OCB as the air electrode, delivers 142 mW cm−2 of maximum power density, 799 mAh g−1 of specific capacity, 1000 mWh g−1 of energy density and 1.24–1.29 V of running voltage at 10 mA cm2 of current density. The battery exhibits excellent durability and rechargeability, indicating the Co-UA-OCB is a promising candidate to replace the precious metal-based electrocatalyst for rechargeable Zn-air batteries.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of efficient and low-cost bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts in rechargeable zinc-air batteries (Zn-air batteries). Specifically, the paper synthesizes a cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon composite material (Co-U A-OCB), which has a high nitrogen content and exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity in both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). ### Main Research Content: 1. **Material Synthesis**: The Co-U A-OCB catalyst was prepared through the chelation reaction of uric acid with cobalt chloride, combined with oxidized carbon black, and finally pyrolyzed at high temperature. 2. **Structural Characterization**: Various characterization techniques (such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, etc.) were used to analyze the structural features of the catalyst. 3. **Electrochemical Performance Testing**: The ORR and OER performance of the catalyst in oxygen-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution was tested using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). 4. **Application Verification**: Co-U A-OCB was used as the air electrode in zinc-air batteries to evaluate its practical application performance. ### Main Results: - **Excellent Bifunctional Catalytic Activity**: The Co-U A-OCB catalyst achieved a half-wave potential of 0.834 V in ORR, and its onset potential and Tafel slope in OER were close to those of commercial RuO₂ catalysts. - **Good Stability**: The catalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability in long-term electrochemical tests. - **Practical Application Potential**: Zinc-air batteries using Co-U A-OCB as the air electrode demonstrated a high maximum power density (142 mW cm⁻²), specific capacity (799 mAh g⁻¹), energy density (1000 mWh g⁻¹), and stable charge-discharge performance. In summary, this study successfully developed a low-cost and high-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, which is expected to replace precious metal-based catalysts and promote the large-scale application of rechargeable zinc-air batteries.
