Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the cornerstone for many important energy conversion devices, including metal-air battery and water splitting. Herein, an optimized NiFe-based metal-organic framework is developed as highly efficient active material for OER. It just needs a low overpotential of 0.31 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a favorable Tafel slope of 43.7 mV dec(-1) in 0.1 m KOH electrolyte for the as-prepared Ni0.75Fe0.25 BDC, which is superior to RuO2. This efficient catalytic performance is due to the introduction of Fe in Ni-based MOFs could benefit the kinetics and charge transfer efficiency, resulting in the optimal activity toward OER. Besides, the obtained active material demonstrates good stability, suggesting the great potential value in sustainable electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:A two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) comprising nickel species and an organic ligand of benzenedicarboxylic acid is fabricated and explored as an electrocatalyst for urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The excellent UOR performance is found to be partially due to the high active site density of the two-dimensional MOF, and largely because of the high oxidation state of the nickel species.

Abstract:A two‐dimensional cobalt‐based metal–organic framework with Mn doped has been prepared as efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalyst. The obtained Co3Mn1 BDC exhibits excellent activity and supervisor durability with a low overpotential and favorable kinetics. Developing an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is the footstone of many electrochemical energy conversion devices. Herein, a cobalt–manganese bimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) is developed as an efficient OER catalyst (denoted as Co3Mn1 BDC). The Co3Mn1 BDC nanosheets demonstrate advantages in specific surface area, pore size distribution comparing with monometallic Co BDC and Mn BDC. The performance investigations demonstrate that the doping of Mn in Co‐based MOFs facilitates the electrochemical area, charge transfer efficiency, reaction kinetics, and turnover frequency. As a consequence, the Co3Mn1 BDC exhibits a low overpotential of 289 mV at current of 10 mA cm−2 and a favorable Tafel slope of 56.8 mV dec−1 on glassy carbon electrode, which is better than IrO2. When the catalyst is loaded on Ni foam, the overpotential and Tafel slope are further decreased to 231 mV and 50.8 mV dec−1. Moreover, the Raman spectrum confirms that the Co3Mn1 BDC can be transformed into active CoOOH, suggesting the bright prospect in electrocatalysis devices as "precatalyst".

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and high-efficiency catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for energy conversions. Herein, a series of bimetallic NiFe metal-organic frameworks (NiFe-BDC) were prepared by a simple solvothermal method for alkaline OER. The synergistic effect between Ni and Fe as well as the large specific surface area lead to a high exposure of Ni active sites during the OER. The optimized NiFe-BDC-0.5 exhibits superior OER performances with a small overpotential of 256 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 45.4 mV dec-1, which outperforms commercial RuO2 and most of the reported MOF-based catalysts reported in the literature. This work provides a new insight into the design of bimetallic MOFs in the applications of electrolysis.

Abstract:Development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to enabling advanced electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Here, a novel nitrogen-doped metal-carbon hybrid (NiCo/CN) with a unique 3D hierarchical structure, consisting of uniformly distributed bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by partially graphitized N-doped carbon shells, is fabricated by a one-step pyrolysis of a nanoscale metal-organic framework as precursor, which exhibits excellent activity for both ORR and OER. The surface chemical changes on the carbon hybrid probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal the presence of favorable electronic interaction at the metal-nitrogen-carbon interface. Remarkably, the NiCo/CN catalyst prepared at high temperature (800°C) manifests a comparable performance to a commercial Pt/C catalyst for the ORR, but also superior stability, path selectivity and methanol tolerance. On the other hand, the Eonset (1.48 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and Ej=10mA/cm2 of NiCo/CN-800 for OER is very close to the state-of-the-art noble catalyst RuO2 (Eonset = 1.46 and Ej=10mA/cm2) along with superior stability over 20 h of operation. The excellent catalytic property is attributable to the unique nanostructure, high porosity and the constructive synergistic effects of the elements M, N, and C.

Abstract:Ionic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) enabling fast ions exchange are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Here, Ni‐btz constructed from a neutral azolate ligand is selected and Fe is introduced to build up bimetallic coupling effect. Continuous 3D NiFe‐btz films derived from high‐degree intergrowth of macrosized MOF particles are fabricated, which are utilized as highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their permanent porosity and rich architectural diversity; however, ionic MOFs enabling fast ions exchange during OER are rarely explored. Here, an ionic MOF (Ni‐btz) constructed with an azolate ligand is selected, and continuous 3D bimetallic MOF (NiFe‐btz) films deriving from high‐degree intergrowth of microsized MOFs particles are fabricated. The as‐prepared NiFe‐btz/NF‐OH electrode exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 239 mV at 10 mA cm−2 under alkaline condition. The OER charge transfer process and bimetallic coupling effect in ionic NiFe‐btz are probed by density functional theory calculations and confirmed via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman measurements. The partial density of states of NiFe‐btz indicates that the main contribution for electron density around the Fermi level is from Cl ions clarifying the profitable impact of ionic MOF framework. This work systematically demonstrates the relationship of electronic structure and OER activity in ionic, bimetallic MOFs and expands the scope of 3D MOF films for efficient OER.

Abstract:The design and preparation of outstanding catalysts are significant for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which performs a crucial function in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we have prepared metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate via a two-step procedure including a hydrothermal reaction and an in situ transformation process. As for the anodic OER process, the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a small overpotential of 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability without obvious deactivation. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF material is mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable kinetics. We believe that the strategy will be of great benefit to the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts, and will pave the way for the application of metal catalysts in the OER.
Electrochemical Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Oxygen-Evolution Performance of Two-Dimensional NiCo-BPDC Materials

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely studied as electrocatalysts, and the research strategy to improve their electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is to modify their structure. In this paper, two-dimensional bimetallic MOFs were constructed to improve electrocatalytic OER performance. Using a mild electrochemical method with Ni and Co as metal sources and 4, 4 '-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid (H2BPDC) as ligand, two-dimensional NiCo-BPDC was synthesized and then deposited on a carbon cloth electrode. The results show that NiCo-BPDC/CC possessed a low overpotential of 356 mV at a current density of 20 mA cm-2 with a small Tafel slope of 86 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH solution. The two-dimensional NiCo-BPDC exhibits excellent electrocatalytic OER performance because the coordination of Ni and Co in the material and the interaction of the two-dimensional materials provide a large electrochemically active surface area and expose more metal active sites for OER, thus improving the reaction efficiency and indicating NiCo-BPDC as potential OER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:A layered double hydroxides (LDHs)‐assisted method to prepare freestanding bimetallic 2D metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets by confinedly coordinating organic linkers with metal components in LDHs is introduced. The freestanding 2D MOFs with efficient proton transfer ability demonstrate superior activity and robust stability toward the oxygen evolution reaction. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to electrochemical hydrogen production. However, designing and fabricating efficient electrocatalysts still remains challenging. By confinedly coordinating organic ligands with metal species in layered double hydroxides (LDHs), an innovative LDHs‐assisted approach is developed to facilely synthesize freestanding bimetallic 2D metal–organic framework nanosheets (2D MOF NSs), preserving the metallic components and activities in OER. Furthermore, the research has demonstrated that the incorporation of carboxyl organic ligands coordinated with metal atoms as proton transfer mediators endow 2D MOF NSs with efficient proton transfer during the electrochemical OHads → Oads transition. These freestanding NiFe‐2D MOF NSs require a small overpotential of 260 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm–2. When this strategy is applied to LDH nanosheets grown on nickel foam, the overpotential can be reduced to 221 mV. This outstanding OER activity supports the capability of multimetallic organic frameworks for the rational design of water oxidation electrocatalysts. This strategy provides a universal path to the synthesis of 2D MOF NSs that can be used as electrocatalysts directly.

Abstract:For the development of energy storage and conversion, it is essential to explore high performance bifunctional catalysts with oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR and OER). Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with abundant exposed active sites have great potential as catalyst materials with high electrocatalytic activity. Herein, a sequence of 2D MOF (TMN2O2, TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) structures with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 2,3,6,7,10,11-triphenylenehexamine were designed and investigated for their catalytic performance in ORR and OER by using density functional theory. Calculation results reveal that TMN2O2 (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) structures have superior thermodynamic and electrochemical stability during the electrocatalytic process. Based on oxygen and water molecule activation and free energy calculations, the CoN2O2 structure exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance for ORR and OER with low overpotential values of 0.33 and 0.30 V, respectively. The high bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for OER/ORR can be attributed to the moderate adsorption interaction of CoN2O2 structure with key intermediates. The valence orbital contribution of Co-3dz2 is critical for adjusting the interaction with the *OOH intermediate, resulting in enhancing the electrocatalytic performance for both ORR and OER.

Abstract:The rational design and facile preparation of a catalyst with high activity, strong durability and low consumption for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an ongoing challenge in water splitting to generate clean and renewable H2 fuel. Herein, bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a uniform morphology, controlled metal ratio and low crystallinity were constructed using a simple and reliable one-step solvothermal method. The three-dimensional (3D) flower-like MOF (F-Ni1Co4-BTC) with a Ni to Co molar ratio of 1 : 4 coordinated with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid exhibited excellent OER catalytic activity compared with its corresponding counterparts, which can be attributed to the establishment of the exquisite morphology, the proportion of the dual-metal center, and the formation of active intermediates. Furthermore, when F-Ni1Co4-BTC was directly grown on carbon cloth (F-Ni1Co4-BTC/CC), it achieved an obvious improvement in electrochemical performance, affording a low overpotential of 292 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope (48 mV dec-1), and excellent mechanical durability in an alkaline electrolyte, which is due to the integrated electrode attained richer active sites and faster electron transfer rate with the introduction of highly conductive carbon cloth. Our work offers a promising strategy to tailor the properties of bimetallic MOFs and the possibility of highly efficient earth-abundant catalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:Development of high-efficiency and low-cost electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important for use at alkaline water electrolysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) provide a rich platform for designing multi-functional materials due to their controllable composition and ultra-high surface area. Herein, we report our findings in the development of amorphous nickel-cobalt bimetal-organic framework nanosheets with crystalline motifs via a simple "ligands hybridization engineering" strategy. These complexes' ligands contain inorganic ligands (H2O and NO3-) and organic ones, hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). Further, we investigated a series of mixed-metal with multi-ligands materials as OER catalysts to explore their possible advantages and features. It is found that the Ni doping is an effective approach for optimizing the electronic configuration, changing lattice ordering degree, and thus enhancing activities of HMT-based electrocatalysts. Also, the crystalline-amorphous boundaries of various HMT-based electrocatalyst can be easily controlled by simply changing amounts of Ni-precursor added. As a result, the optimized ultrathin (Co, 0.3Ni)-HMT nanosheets can reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotential of 330 mV with a small Tafel slope of 66 mV dec-1. Our findings show that the electronic structure changes induced by Ni doping, 2D nanosheet structure, and MOF frameworks with multi-ligands compositions play critical roles in the enhancement of the kinetically sluggish electrocatalytic OER. The present study emphasizes the importance of ligands and active metals via hybridization for exploring novel efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction is a bottleneck reaction in hydrolysis and electrolysis because the four-step electron transfer leads to slow reaction kinetics and large overpotentials. This sit-uation can be improved by fast charge transfer by optimizing the interfacial electronic structure and enhancing polarization. Herein, a unique metal (Ni) organic (diphenylalanine, DPA) framework Ni (DPA)2 (Ni-MOF) with tunable polarization is designed to bond with FeNi-LDH (layered double hydroxides) nanoflakes. The Ni-MOF@FeNi-LDH heterostructure delivers excellent oxygen evolution performance exemplified by an ultralow overpotential of 198 mV at 100 mA cm-2 compared to other (FeNi-LDH)-based catalysts. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that FeNi-LDH exists in an electron-rich state in Ni-MOF@FeNi-LDH due to polarization enhancement caused by interfacial bonding with Ni-MOF. This effectively changes the local electronic structure of the metal Fe/Ni active sites and optimizes adsorption of the oxygen-containing intermediates. Polarization and electron transfer of Ni-MOF are further enhanced by magnetoelectric coupling consequently giving rise to better electrocatalytic properties as a result of high-density electron transfer to active sites. Abstract:As a noble metal substitute, two-dimensional (2D) hierarchical nano-frame structures have attracted great interest as candidate catalysts due to their remarkable advantages – high intrinsic activity, high electron mobility, and straightforward surface functionalization. Therefore, they may replace Pt-based catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) applications. Herein, a simple method is developed to design hierarchical nano-frame structures assembled via 2D NiO and N-doped graphene (NG) nanosheets. This procedure can yield nanostructures that satisfy the criteria correlated with improved electrocatalytic performance, such as large surface area, numerous undercoordinated atoms, and high defect densities. Further, porous NG nanosheet architectures, featuring NiO nanosheets densely coordinated with accessible holey Fe 2 O 3 moieties, can enhance mesoporosity and balance hydrophilicity. Such improvements can facilitate charge transport and expose formerly inaccessible reaction sites, maximizing active site density utilization. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal favored O 2 adsorption and dissociation on Fe 2 O 3 hybrid structures when supported by 2D NiO and NG nanomaterials, given 2D materials donated charge to Fe 2 O 3 active sites. Our systematic studies reveal that synergistic contributions are responsible for enriching the catalytic activity of Fe 2 O 3 @NiO / NG in alkaline media – encompassing internal voids and pores, unique hierarchical support structures, and concentrated N-dopant and bimetallic atomic interactions. Ultimately, this work expands the toolbox for designing and synthesizing highly efficient 2D / 2D shelled functional nanomaterials with transition metals, endeavoring to benefit energy conversion and related ORR applications.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:In recent years, transition metal catalysts due to their low price, excellent conductivity and high activity have been extensively studied in OER. It is worth noting that Co3+ plays a vital role in the process of oxygen evolution catalysis, because Co3+ ions are considered to be active sites. The development of catalysts with high Co3+ content has important application prospects for improving water oxidation efficiency. This paper uses a simple ligand-assisted synthesis method to promote the transformation of two-dimensional layered double hydroxides (LDHs) into two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOF-OH/NF are quickly and easily prepared by electrooxidation, which exhibit superior OER properties, with a low overpotential of 260 mV and 420 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 100 mA cm−2 and 1000 mA cm−2. Moreover, the MOF-OH/NF has good stability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte solution. This study provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of novel composite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of nanostructured transition metal compounds with adjustable components are often challenging due to the involvement of multiple synthetic procedures or complex manipulations. In this work, a one-step selfregulating acid-etching strategy is employed for nickel iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH). A twodimensional (2D) NiFe LDH nanosheet is speedy and efficiently formed. This as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibits electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This approach avoids numerous structural design challenges and provides highly active sites and a robust interface between catalyst and support. As a result, 2D NiFe LDH electrodes demonstrate highly efficient OER performance with a low overpotential of 300 mV and a Tafel slope of 70.6 mV dec- 1 at a current density of 100 mA cm -2.
