Abstract:In this paper, the electrocatalytic efficiency of bi-metallic organic framework compounds grown on nickel foam (NF) has been enhanced by adjusting the amount of iron and cobalt precursors. A unique wedge-like morphology was observed in Fe-1-Co-1-MOF. The optimized Fe-1-Co-1-MOF (1:1 of molar ratio of iron to cobalt) exhibits superior catalytic activity to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a lowest overpotential of only 233 mV at a current density of 10 mA.cm(-2) and the higher current density of 400 mA.cm(-2) can be provided at overpotential of 264 mV. The Tafel slope in alkaline aqueous solutions was 24.4 mV.dec(-1). After 10 h of continuous operation, the catalyst showed only a slight loss of current density at 50 mA.cm(-2). This success may be attributed to synergy between the bi-metallic organic framework catalyst and the large pores of conductive nickel foam, as well as the synergistic effect between the two phases molecules of the bi-metallic organic framework metal. Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the cornerstone for many important energy conversion devices, including metal-air battery and water splitting. Herein, an optimized NiFe-based metal-organic framework is developed as highly efficient active material for OER. It just needs a low overpotential of 0.31 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a favorable Tafel slope of 43.7 mV dec(-1) in 0.1 m KOH electrolyte for the as-prepared Ni0.75Fe0.25 BDC, which is superior to RuO2. This efficient catalytic performance is due to the introduction of Fe in Ni-based MOFs could benefit the kinetics and charge transfer efficiency, resulting in the optimal activity toward OER. Besides, the obtained active material demonstrates good stability, suggesting the great potential value in sustainable electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and high-efficiency catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for energy conversions. Herein, a series of bimetallic NiFe metal-organic frameworks (NiFe-BDC) were prepared by a simple solvothermal method for alkaline OER. The synergistic effect between Ni and Fe as well as the large specific surface area lead to a high exposure of Ni active sites during the OER. The optimized NiFe-BDC-0.5 exhibits superior OER performances with a small overpotential of 256 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 45.4 mV dec-1, which outperforms commercial RuO2 and most of the reported MOF-based catalysts reported in the literature. This work provides a new insight into the design of bimetallic MOFs in the applications of electrolysis.

Abstract:The development of electrocatalysts is of vital importance to OER. In this work, an optimized MOF electrode, Ir-NiFe-btz/NF, was synthesized by incorporating ultralow level of Ir nanoparticles into an ionic bimetallic MOF. Under the alkaline condition, the prepared MOF electrode demonstrated outstanding OER activity and stability with a low overpotential of 182 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and no obvious increase of overpotential in chronovoltammetry test over 100 hours at 100 mA cm-2.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts to speed up the slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is both an opportunity and a challenge. Herein, we present a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived highly active OER catalyst (NiFe-MOF-S@CNT) composed of Fe/NiS heterostructure-embedded nanosheets interconnected by carbon nanotubes network via a direct two-step solvothermal method. The optimized NiFe-MOF-S@CNT catalyst demonstrates outstanding OER activity: it requires an ultralow overpotential of 237 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 ( η 10 ) with a small Tafel slope of 42.3 mV/dec, surpassing the commercial RuO 2 ( η 10 = 295 mV) and most other transition metal catalysts. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and large specific surface area, the MOF-derived NiFe-MOF-S@CNT nanosheets facilitate enhancing mass transfer and electrolyte penetration. Additionally, the incorporation of Fe/NiS heterostructures within the nanosheets, along with carbon nanotubes, generates interfacial effects, promoting electronic interactions and exposing more active sites, thus significantly boosting OER activity. The backbone of carbon nanotubes not only enhances conductivity but also prevents agglomeration of the metal phase, ensuring uniform dispersion of active sites. This work offers a cost-effective and green approach for synthesizing highly efficient transition metal-based sulfides and also paves the way for advancing OER electrocatalysis for various energy applications.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hampers the H2 production by H2O electrolysis, and it is very important for the development of highly efficient and low-priced OER catalysts. Herein, a representative metalloporphyrinic MOF, PCN-600-Ni, integrated with graphene oxide (GO), serves as an ideal precursor and template to afford bimetallic iron-nickel phosphide/reduced graphene oxide composite (denoted as Fe-Ni-P/rGO-T; T represents pyrolysis temperature) via pyrolysis and subsequent phosphidation process. Thanks to the highly porous structure, the synergetic effect of Fe and Ni elements in bimetallic phosphide, and the good conductivity endowed by rGO, the optimized Fe-Ni-P/rGO-400 exhibits remarkable OER activity in 1 M KOH solution, affording an extremely low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which is far superior to the commercial IrO2 and among the best in all non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The quest for economically sustainable electrocatalysts to replace critical materials in anodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key goal in electrochemical conversion technologies, and, in this context, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer great promise as alternative electroactive materials. In this study, a series of nanostructured electrocatalysts was successfully synthesized by growing tailored Ni-Fe-based MOFs on nitrogen-doped graphene, creating composite systems named MIL-NG-n. Their growth was tuned using a molecular modulator, revealing a non-trivial trend of the properties as a function of the modulator quantity. The most active material displayed an excellent OER performance characterized by a potential of 1.47 V (vs. RHE) to reach 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope (42 mV dec−1), and a stability exceeding 18 h in 0.1 M KOH. This outstanding performance was attributed to the synergistic effect between the unique MOF architecture and N-doped graphene, enhancing the amount of active sites and the electron transfer. Compared to a simple mixture of MOFs and N-doped graphene or the deposition of Fe and Ni atoms on the N-doped graphene, these hybrid materials demonstrated a clearly superior OER performance.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising platforms for preparing the efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, but few of them are directly employed as active components due to their poor electrical conductivity. Herein, a lamellar bimetallic MFN (MIL‐53(FeNi)) encapsulated in graphene aerogel‐grafted Ni foam was developed (denoted as MFN@GA/NF). The graphene aerogel (GA) provides abundant space for the in‐situ growth of MFN and functions as a"bridge"to connect nickel foam (NF) with MFN by virtue of good conductivity. Benefitting from its structural integrity, the obtained hierarchical MFN@GA/NF exhibited excellent OER performances in alkaline media with an overpotential of 250 mV (20 mA cm‐2) and 326 mV (200 mA cm‐2), as well as remarkable stability in continuous electrolysis for over 100 h. This work provides a new channel for engineering MOF‐based functional materials with featured architectures.

Abstract:The sluggish electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial process for clean energy conversion technology. The preparation of non-precious electrocatalysts with high performance for OER is still a main challenge. Herein, we report a FeNi3 nanoparticles incorporated on N-doped hollow carbon rod with extraordinary performance toward OER by in situ annealing the Ni-doped Fe based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) precursors. Meanwhile, the pristine N atoms of MOFs doped into carbon frameworks can enhance the electrical conductivity, boost electron mass transport and electron transfer, and construct more active sites. Furthermore, constructing the Fe-Ni alloy structure can facilitate the formation of O–O bond, optimize the free energy for intermediate adsorption and improve OER performance. The as-prepared Fe-Ni bimetal decorated hollow N-doped nanocarbon hybrid structure possesses superior OER performance, which is surpass commercial IrO2 at a overpotential of only 340 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2, as well as a small Tafel slope of 86.67 mV dec−1 in alkaline electrolyte. The Fe-Ni alloy/hollow N-doped nanocarbon hybrid structure shining the bright future for obtaining earth-abundant and superior efficient anode OER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:To alleviate the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, it's urgent to develop electrocatalysts with high activity and low cost. In this work, Fe doped metal organic frameworks (Ni)/carbon black composites were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the direct use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for OER, numerous and highly dispersed active sites are exposed to the electrolyte and reactants. By regulating Ni/Fe ratios, a high electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) and high relative surface content of active Ni3+ species are obtained, which mainly contribute to the high OER activity. Besides, the introduced carbon black (CB) was found to enhance the charge-transfer efficiency of the electrocatalysts, which is also favorable for OER. The optimal Ni9Fe1-BDC-0.15CB electrocatalyst shows excellent OER activity with the low overpotential of similar to 290 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and the Tafel slope of similar to 76.1 mV dec(-1), which is comparable to RuO2 and other MOFs-based OER electrocatalysts reported in recent years. Abstract:Ionic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) enabling fast ions exchange are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Here, Ni‐btz constructed from a neutral azolate ligand is selected and Fe is introduced to build up bimetallic coupling effect. Continuous 3D NiFe‐btz films derived from high‐degree intergrowth of macrosized MOF particles are fabricated, which are utilized as highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their permanent porosity and rich architectural diversity; however, ionic MOFs enabling fast ions exchange during OER are rarely explored. Here, an ionic MOF (Ni‐btz) constructed with an azolate ligand is selected, and continuous 3D bimetallic MOF (NiFe‐btz) films deriving from high‐degree intergrowth of microsized MOFs particles are fabricated. The as‐prepared NiFe‐btz/NF‐OH electrode exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 239 mV at 10 mA cm−2 under alkaline condition. The OER charge transfer process and bimetallic coupling effect in ionic NiFe‐btz are probed by density functional theory calculations and confirmed via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ Raman measurements. The partial density of states of NiFe‐btz indicates that the main contribution for electron density around the Fermi level is from Cl ions clarifying the profitable impact of ionic MOF framework. This work systematically demonstrates the relationship of electronic structure and OER activity in ionic, bimetallic MOFs and expands the scope of 3D MOF films for efficient OER.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction is a bottleneck reaction in hydrolysis and electrolysis because the four-step electron transfer leads to slow reaction kinetics and large overpotentials. This sit-uation can be improved by fast charge transfer by optimizing the interfacial electronic structure and enhancing polarization. Herein, a unique metal (Ni) organic (diphenylalanine, DPA) framework Ni (DPA)2 (Ni-MOF) with tunable polarization is designed to bond with FeNi-LDH (layered double hydroxides) nanoflakes. The Ni-MOF@FeNi-LDH heterostructure delivers excellent oxygen evolution performance exemplified by an ultralow overpotential of 198 mV at 100 mA cm-2 compared to other (FeNi-LDH)-based catalysts. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that FeNi-LDH exists in an electron-rich state in Ni-MOF@FeNi-LDH due to polarization enhancement caused by interfacial bonding with Ni-MOF. This effectively changes the local electronic structure of the metal Fe/Ni active sites and optimizes adsorption of the oxygen-containing intermediates. Polarization and electron transfer of Ni-MOF are further enhanced by magnetoelectric coupling consequently giving rise to better electrocatalytic properties as a result of high-density electron transfer to active sites. Abstract:We employed a synergistic approach by utilizing in situ etching and phosphating techniques on trimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to facilitate the conversion of CoFeNi-ZIFs into CoFeNi/Z-P NC (Nitrogen-doped graphene coating) nanocomposites. Remarkably, the resulting CoFeNi/Z-P NC materials have a large surface area and a lot of pore volume, making their active sites more accessible and makes mass transfer more effective. Additionally, the introduction of Fe and Ni guest metals into the CoP crystal lattice without phase segregation ensures a homogeneous distribution while altering the electrical characteristics. Leveraging these advantages, the CoFeNi/Z-P NC nanocomposites demonstrate a notable enhancement for the OER, 10mA cm-2 is achieved at a low overpotential with a current density of 244mV for alkaline solutions, with a low Tafel slope of 66.2mV dec-1 and has good stability.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts to reduce overpotentials is vital for accelerating the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes. Herein, we demonstrate ultrathin heterogeneous nanosheets as a promising OER electrocatalyst, which are composed of ultrafine CoFeOx nanoparticles and a monolayered CoN4-based metal–organic framework (MOF) matrix. The embedding of such inorganic nanoparticles in the MOF lattice creates metal Co sites located at the CoFeOx/MOF interfaces. Structural characterization and analysis indicated a higher valence and changed 3d electronic configuration for the interfacial Co in contrast to the CoN4 sites. Furthermore, theoretical calculations reveal the high activity of interfacial Co sites for OER. Electrochemical studies confirm that the ultrathin heterogeneous nanosheets deposited on carbon cloth can achieve an excellent electrocatalytic OER performance with a low overpotential of 232 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 with good stability. This work provides insights on the development of ultrathin OER heterocatalysts with highly active interfaces of inorganic units and MOFs.

Self-templating synthesis of hollow NiFe hydroxide nanospheres for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructure with hollow feature can greatly promote electrocatalytic activity by facilitating the diffusion of active species and accelerating the contact between catalyst and electrolyte. In this paper, we report the preparation of hierarchical hollow NiFe hydroxide nanospheres assembled from ultrathin nanosheets as the OER electrocatalyst via a simple and gentle self-templating strategy, which includes two steps: the synthesis of Ni(OH)2 nanospheres precursor and its further transformation to the final hollow-spheres after the introduction of Fe3+ via a mild hydrothermal method. The hollow NiFe hydroxide nanospheres were proven to be composed of ultrathin nanosheets which formed porous walls. This unique structure achieved numerous mass transfer channels for electrolytes, ideal pathways for ions and electrons, and a high specific surface area, leading to the improved performance for the product during the electrocatalytic reaction. In addition, the charge transfer rate and structural stability of the architecture have been greatly improved after the addition of Fe3+, which guaranteed high electrochemical performance toward OER. The tafel plot for NiFe-190 without any conductive agents is 60 mV dec−1 and the overpotential needed to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is a 270 mV.

As for the anodic OER process, the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a small overpotential of 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability without obvious deactivation. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF material is mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable kinetics. We believe that the strategy will be of great benefit to the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts, and will pave the way for the application of metal catalysts in the OER.
Mechanochemical Post‐Synthesis of Metal–Organic Framework‐Based Pre‐Electrocatalysts with Surface FeONi/Co Bonding for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Rational surface engineering of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) provide potential opportunities to address the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the development of MOF‐based materials with low overpotentials remains a great challenge. Herein, a post‐synthesis strategy to prepare highly efficient MOF‐based pre‐electrocatalysts via all‐solid‐phase mechanochemistry is demonstrated. The surface of a Fe‐based MOF (MIL‐53) can be reconstructed and anchored with atomically dispersed Ni/Co sites. As expected, the optimized M‐NiA‐CoN exhibits a very low overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec−1 in 1 m KOH electrolyte. The superior electrocatalytic OER activity is mainly due to the formation of surface FeONi/Co bonding. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that the transformation from *OH to *O is the rate‐determining step and the electrocatalytic OER activity trend at different metal sites is Co > Ni≈Fe. A general mechanochemical post‐synthesis strategy is developed for the preparation of metal–organic framework‐based pre‐electrocatalysts. The surface of Fe‐based MIL‐53 can be reconstructed by forming abundant Fe–O–Ni/Co bonding, achieving an ultralow overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in an alkaline electrolyte for oxygen evolution electrocatalysis.

Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Derived Metal-Carbon Hybrid for Efficient Reversible Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to enabling advanced electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Here, a novel nitrogen-doped metal-carbon hybrid (NiCo/CN) with a unique 3D hierarchical structure, consisting of uniformly distributed bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by partially graphitized N-doped carbon shells, is fabricated by a one-step pyrolysis of a nanoscale metal-organic framework as precursor, which exhibits excellent activity for both ORR and OER. The surface chemical changes on the carbon hybrid probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal the presence of favorable electronic interaction at the metal-nitrogen-carbon interface. Remarkably, the NiCo/CN catalyst prepared at high temperature (800°C) manifests a comparable performance to a commercial Pt/C catalyst for the ORR, but also superior stability, path selectivity and methanol tolerance. On the other hand, the Eonset (1.48 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and Ej=10mA/cm2 of NiCo/CN-800 for OER is very close to the state-of-the-art noble catalyst RuO2 (Eonset = 1.46 and Ej=10mA/cm2) along with superior stability over 20 h of operation. The excellent catalytic property is attributable to the unique nanostructure, high porosity and the constructive synergistic effects of the elements M, N, and C.
