Abstract:SnO 2 nanocrystal and rare-earth Eu～（3+） ion co-doped SiO 2 thin films are prepared by sol-gel and spin coating methods.The formation of tetragonal rutile structure SnO 2 nanocrystals with a uniform distribution is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the densities of the hydroxyl groups,and it is found that the emission intensity from the 5 D 0 7 F 2 transitions of the Eu～（3+） ions is enhanced by two orders of magnitude due to energy transfer from the oxygen-vacancy-related defects of the SnO 2 nanocrystals to nearby Eu～（3+） ions.The influences of the amounts of Sn and the post-annealing temperatures are systematically evaluated to further understand the mechanism of energy transfer.The luminescence intensity ratio of Eu～（3+） ions from electric dipole transition and magnetic dipole transition indicate the different probable locations of Eu～（3+） ions in the sol-gel thin film,which are further discussed based on temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements.

Abstract:Er3+ ions embedded in silica thin films co-doped by SnO2 nanocrystals are fabricated by sol-gel and spin coating methods. Uniformly distributed 4-nm SnO2 nanocrystals are fabricated, and the nanocrystals showed tetragonal rutile crystalline structures confirmed by transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction measurements. A strong characteristic emission located at 1.54 μm from the Er3+ ions is identified, and the influences of Sn doping concentrations on photoluminescence properties are systematically evaluated. The emission at 1.54 μm from Er3+ ions is enhanced by more than three orders of magnitude, which can be attributed to the effective energy transfer from the defect states of SnO2 nanocrystals to nearby Er3+ ions, as revealed by the selective excitation experiments.

Abstract:SiO2 thin films co-doped with ZnO nanoparticles and Eu3+ ions were prepared by sol–gel method. The formation of nano-sized ZnO particles was confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy. The characteristic emission bands from Eu3+ ions can be observed at room temperature and the luminescence intensity is increased obviously by introducing ZnO nanoparticles into Eu3+-doped silica films. The integrated luminescence intensity is influenced by the concentration and size of ZnO particles, suggesting effective energy transfer from nano-sized ZnO to Eu3+ ions. It is argued that the efficient luminescence enhancement occurs under the suitable Zn2+ amount and annealing temperature.

Abstract:The Eu2+‐doped glasses and glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their luminescence properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals in glass ceramics was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The melting in a reducing atmosphere and then the crystallization of glass resulted in the reduction of almost all Eu3+ ions to Eu2+ ions in the glass ceramics. The Eu2+‐doped glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals exhibited a much stronger broad blue emission band and a longer lifetime of excited state than the glasses.
Energy Transfer Process Between Eu3+ and Wide-Band-gap SnO2 Nanocrystals in Silica Films Studied by Photoluminescence Excitation and Time-Resolved Photoluminescence Techniques

Abstract:Eu3+ ions embedded in silica thin films co-doped with SnO2 nanocrystals were fabricated by sol–gel and spin-coating methods. SnO2 nanocrystals with controllable sizes were synthesized through precisely controlling the Sn concentrations. The influences of doping and annealing conditions on the photoluminescence intensity from SnO2 nanocrystals are systematically investigated. The effective energy transfer from the defect states of SnO2 nanocrystals to nearby Eu3+ ions has revealed by the selective photoluminescence excitation spectra. The efficiency of the Förster resonance energy transfer is evaluated by the time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, which is about 29.1 % based on the lifetime tests of the SnO2 emission.

Abstract:A new series of oxynitride glasses and glass ceramics were prepared by melt and heat treatment methods.The formation of CaAl2Si2O8,Ca2Al2SiO7 and Y20Si12O48N4crystals were precipitated in the glass ceramics,confirmed by XRD measurements.The luminescence spectra showed that an increasing amount of Eu3+could be reduced into Eu2+with the increase of Si3N4 content or by the subsequent annealing.Such Eu3+to Eu2+reduction was deduced either from 6Eu3++2N3-→6Eu2++N2↑ or from Eu3+substituting Ca2+.Besides emitting red-orange luminescence of Eu3+:f-f transitions like the precursor glasses,the glass ceramics also presented new blue-green super-broad emission band corresponding to Eu2+:d-f transitions.By combining blue-green and red-orange emissions,the oxynitride glass ceramics showed white color luminescence with improved luminescence intensity and color rendering index,thus demonstrating a highly potential LED illumination application prospect.

Abstract:Ce3+-Eu2+-Dy3+-Eu3+-doped fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing orthorhombic CaCeOF3 nanocrystals were prepared by annealing the precursor glass above 640 degrees C, along with the reduction of Eu3+ -> Eu2+. Under near ultraviolet excitation, the emission bands of Eu2+ or Dy3+ were enhanced by several ten or hundred times, owing to energy transfers from Ce3+ to Eu2+ or Dy3+. The glass and glass ceramics emitted warm white light deriving from the blue, yellow and red emission from Eu2+, Dy3+ and Eu3+. Tuning the annealing temperature, the Eu2+/Eu3+ ratio and the warm white Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates can be adjusted. Abstract:Intense infrared emission of Yb3+ is reported for the Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped fluorosilicate glass ceramics. With annealing methods, cubic SrF2: Eu3+, Yb3+ nanocrystals are precipitated homogeneously in the glass ceramics. The incorporation of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the SrF2 nanocrystal was confirmed by XRD patterns and emission spectra. Deriving from much closer distance between Eu3+ and Yb3+ ions in the nanocrystals, higher efficient energy transfer of Eu3+→Yb3+ (cross relaxation between Eu3+:5D0→7F6 andYb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition or cooperative energy transfer from one Eu3+ ion to a couple of Yb3+ ions) and intense near infrared emission of Yb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition are achieved in the glass ceramics. Both the quantum yield (QY) and the NIR emission intensity of the glass ceramics are enhanced, when compared with the precursor glasses. The maximum ET efficiency of Eu3+→Yb3+ is close to 60%, and the measured maximum QY of 980 nm emissions is 13%. It demonstrates the potential application of Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped glass ceramics in improving the efficiency of silicon solar cells.

Abstract:Novel oxynitride glass–ceramics with tremendously improved quantum yield and adjustable color coordinates were prepared with the conventional melt-and-quench method and subsequent annealing heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases were homogenously precipitated in the glass matrix. The optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum measurements showed that a large portion of Eu3+ ions were reduced into Eu2+ which were crystallized into CaAl2Si2O8 phase during the heat treatment by substituting Ca2+ ions in them. Emission spectra evidently show that Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions were preferentially incorporated in CaAl2Si2O8 and Y20N4Si12O48 crystalline phases, respectively. This assignment was further supported by cation ionic radii and local charge balances, as well as defect chemistry considerations. The total emission intensity including both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions was enhanced with increasing the annealing temperature, due to the conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and the enhanced quantum efficiency of Eu3+ in the crystalline phase as compared to the glass matrix. As a result, the quantum yields (QYs) of the glass–ceramics were also enhanced significantly from 2.07% (the precursor glass) up to 43.33% (the maximum of the glass–ceramics). The emission ratio of Eu2+/Eu3+ changed from <1.0 to >4.0, which led this novel glass–ceramics with adjustable color coordinates ranging from red to blue controlled by varying the annealing temperature.

Abstract:Present work prepared a series of Eu2O3 and Dy2O3 co-doped aluminoborosilicate glasses with different network modifier addition by melting and annealing method.The emission spectra of these samples had been measured under UV light excitation.A combination of blue,green,yellow and red emission bands ascribed to transitions for Eu2+,Eu3+and Dy3+ions was shown for these glasses.It presented that the relative emission in-tensity could be adj usted with different network modifier oxides,and resulted in the change of luminescence col-or.White light emission could be obtained by appropriate network modifier oxides addition.Interestingly,it should be noted that the coexistence of Eu3+and Eu2+ions in the aluminoborosilicate glasses was observed ac-Cording to emission spectra.The Eu3+→Eu2+reduction degree decreased by substituting Li2O for ZnO,while it increased by substituting CaO for BaO.The change was discussed with the different optical basicity of the com-ponents.

Abstract:SiO2-SnO2:Er3+ thin films co-doped with Yb3+ ions have been prepared by the sol-gel method. By controlling the Yb3+ concentration, the enhanced Er3+-related near infrared (NIR) emission is achieved under 325 nm excitation. The energy transfer efficiency (ETE) from SnO2 to rare earth is investigated by photoluminescence decay curves. It is found that with the increase of Yb3+ ion concentration to 15 mol%, the ETE gradually increases to ∼68.7%. The comprehensive spectroscopic analysis results demonstrate that both improved ETE and a new energy transfer channel from SnO2 nanocrystals to Er3+ ions via the Yb3+ intermediate state contribute to the Er3+-related NIR emission enhancement.

Abstract:A significant enhancement of photoluminescence from Eu3+ embedded in SiO2 matrix is observed by codoping with wide band-gap In2O3 nanoparticles. The enhanced photoluminescence characteristics are strongly influenced by the postannealing temperature and the In3+ concentration. Synchronous scanning photoluminescence technique was used to understand the excitation and luminescence behavior in codoped silica films. Based on the experimental results, we argue that the enhancement of photoluminescence is associated with the effective energy transfer process from In2O3 nanoparticles to the charge transfer band of O2+–Eu3+ instead of the direct transfer to the rare-earth energy levels.

Abstract:Monodisperse coreshell structured SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ microspheres were synthesized in a seeded growth way. In that way, a thin shell of Eu3+-doped silica was grown on the prepared monodisperse silica colloids. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermal analysis (TGA-DSC) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results reveal that the SiO2 spheres have been successfully coated by SiO2:Eu3+ phosphors and the obtained SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ particles have perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution. Additionally, the monodisperse SiO2@SiO2:Eu3+ microspheres exhibit considerably strong photoluminescence (PL) of Eu3+ under the excitation of 393 nm compared with the SiO2:Eu3+ samples with polydispersed or irregular shapes and sizes obtained by base-catalyzed Stliber method. Furthermore, the PL intensity increases with the increasing of Eu3+ concentration in SiO2 microspheres shell, and concentration quenching occurs when Eu3+ concentration exceeds 5.0 mol%. Abstract:Tremendous enhancement of optical emission efficiency was achieved in fluorosilicate glasses by growing lanthanide doped fluoride nanocrystals embedded in oxide glass matrix. The formation mechanism of the microstructure was elucidated by combining solid-state NMR, scanning TEM, EDX map, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the growth of fluoride nanocrystals in fluorosilicate glass was originated from fluoride phase separation. Atomic level structures of phase separation of fluoride-rich regions in oxyfluoride glasses matrix were observed from both EDX maps and MD simulations, and it was found that, while silicon exclusively coordinated by oxygen and alkali earth ions and lanthanide mainly coordinated by fluorine, aluminum played the role of linking the two fluoride glass and oxide glass regions by bonding to both oxygen and fluoride ions.

Abstract:Crystalline Y2O3:Eu is of paramount significance in rare earth materials and research on luminescence spectra. In this work, the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu was coated with silica by a facile solid state reaction method at room temperature. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) photographs showed that the prepared Y2O3:Eu particle is polycrystalline with the size of 20nm, the size of silica-coated particle is about 25nm. The XPS spectra indicated that the silica layer is likely to interact with Y2O3:Eu by a Si–O–Y chemical bond. The luminescence spectra showed that the intensity of ground samples is lower than that of unground ones, the intensity of silica-coated phosphors is higher than that of the ground samples, while almost the same as that of the unground ones. Therefore, the silica coating decreases the surface defects of nanoparticles of the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu, thus increasing their luminescent intensity.

Abstract:We report on near-infrared to visible upeonversion luminescence in transparent Eu3+-doped SrO-TiO2-SiO2 glass-ceramics. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that Sr2TiSi2O8 crystallites are precipitated in the glass after heat treatment at 850 degrees C for 2 h. The Eu3+-doped glass-ceramics show strongly enhanced upconversion luminescence and greatly improved damage threshold compared with the as-prepared glass. Abstract:Co-doping size-tunable SnO2 nanocrystals into Er3+ ions embedded silica thin films produces an enhancement of Er-related nearinfrared emission by three orders of magnitude. Selective PL and PLE measurements show that energy transfer process occurs between SnO2 nanocrystals and Er3+ ions. Quantitative studies of PL decay lifetime and photoluminescence temperature-dependence demonstrate that both high energy transfer efficiency from SnO2 nanocrystals to Er3+ ions and the partial incorporation of Er3+ ions into SnO2 nanocrystals contribute to the near-infrared emission enhancement. All these results indicated that SnO2 nanocrystals with suitable size have great potentials in fabricating highefficiency near-infrared luminous materials as sensitizers of Er3+ ions. Abstract:We report on a feasible method to synthesize luminescence nanocrystals in porous glass in this paper. Well dispersed YVO4:Eu nanocrystals were proved being grown in nanoporous glass by XRD, micro-Raman spectra and HRTEM equipped with EDS. The YVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystal grown in porous glass herein shows very different luminescence properties compared with single Eu-doped sample. By this method, intense red emission from high silica glass due to energy transfers VO43−→Eu3+ was obtained. The results show that the reduction from Eu3+ to Eu2+ in porous glass impregnated with Eu3+ ions was avoided effectively.
