Abstract:Problem definition: This paper provides a theoretical investigation into the value and design of a traceability-driven blockchain under different supply chain structures. Methodology/results: We use game theory to study the quality contracting equilibrium between one buyer and two suppliers and identify two fundamental functionalities of a traceability-driven blockchain. In serial supply chains, the ability to trace the sequential production process creates value by mitigating double moral hazard. In this case, traceability always improves product quality and all firms’ profits and naturally creates a win-win. In parallel supply chains, the ability to trace the product origin enables flexible product recall, which can reduce product quality. In this case, traceability can benefit the buyer while hurting the suppliers, creating an incentive conflict. Managerial implications: Firms operating in different kinds of supply chains could face unique challenges when they adopt and design a traceability-driven blockchain. First, in serial supply chains, any firm can be the initiator of the blockchain, whereas in parallel supply chains, it may be critical for the buyer to take the lead in initiating the blockchain and properly compensate the suppliers. Second, in serial supply chains, a restricted data permission policy where each supplier shares their own traceability data with the buyer but not with each other can improve the supply chain profit, whereas in parallel supply chains, it is never optimal to restrict a firm’s access to the traceability data. Third, the suppliers’ incentive to enhance the governance of data quality is more aligned with the supply chain optimum in serial supply chains compared with parallel supply chains. Funding: M. Impact of Traceability Technology Adoption in Food Supply Chain Networks

Abstract:Improving traceability in food supply chains has been a big part of ongoing effort to reduce contamination risks and food waste. Recent technology advancement such as blockchain technology has propelled innovative retailers to promote food traceability system adoption in their supply chains. We develop a three-tier supply chain model with multiple upstream (tier 2) suppliers to investigate how traceability technology adoption affects incentives of supply chain members and whether and how its anticipated benefits can be realized. We find that full traceability brings direct revenue benefit to every supply chain member by saving uncontaminated food from disposal (pure traceability effect) but also leaves each tier of the supply chain vulnerable to its immediate downstream buyer's exploitation through strategically lowering the purchasing price (strategic pricing effect). The interplay of the two effects may result in some of the supply chain members (even the retailer) being worse off with traceability adoption and the system being exposed to higher contamination risk; the latter is because of the weakened upstream supplier's incentive to exert contamination risk-reduction effort. Moreover, we find that the supply chain network structure also influences the benefit distribution of traceability adoption: The retailer always benefits from traceability adoption in network structures where the tier 1 supplier's strategic pricing power is eliminated or weakened; all supply chain members benefit from traceability adoption in a network with a large number of tier 2 suppliers. Finally, we show that alternative risk-mitigation schemes such as tier 2 coordination can diminish the value of traceability adoption, and partial traceability enabled by tier 1 product inspection can be more beneficial to the retailer than full traceability. Abstract:In recent years, domestic and international food safety incidents occurred frequently.Establishment of food safety traceability system is an important way to ensure food safety , and it has attracted more and more attention. This article analyzed China's food safety traceability system , proceeding from the definition of food safety traceability,analyzing the significance of the establishment of food safety traceability system and introducing the development history and current situation of it at home and abroad .Meanwhile ,it analyzed the current problems of our traceability system and put forward the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for improvement.

Abstract:Purpose: Supply chain has become very complex today. There are multiple stakeholders at various points. All these stakeholders need to collaborate with each other in multiple directions for its effective and efficient management. The manufacturers need proper information and data about the product location, its processing history, raw materials, etc at each point so as to control the production process. Companies need to develop global and effective strategies to sustain in the competitive market. Logistics helps companies to implement the effectiveness across the business supply chain from source to destination to achieve their strategic goals. Traceability has become one of the integrated parts of the supply chain logistics management that track and trace the product's information in upstream and downstream at each point. All the stakeholders in the supply chain have different objectives to implement the traceability solution that depends on their role (e.g. manufacturers, distributers or wholesalers have their own role). The information generated and needed from all these actors are also different and are to be shared among all to run the supply chain smoothly. But the stakeholders don't want to share all the information with other stake holders which is a major challenge to be addressed in current traceability solutions. The purpose of this research is to conduct thorough study of the literatures available on the traceability solutions, finding the gaps and recommending our views to enhance the collaborations among the stakeholders in every point of the business supply chain. The study will be helpful for further researchers to propose a traceability meta-model to address the gaps. Design/methodology/approach: The relevant literatures with keywords supply chain management, traceability, logistics management are searched from the trusted database. The scope and the objectives of the research is set based on which the papers are filtered as per the titles and abstract. Proper analyses of the screened papers are done and the recommendations are given. Findings: Traceability solution is popular among the industries since a long for their supply chain management. After proper analysis of the available literatures about the traceability solution the industries use, this research will identify the gaps based on which we give the proper recommendations and perspectives of our work.

Abstract:As the traceability system has the function of specifying potential liability and other characteristics,it is becoming popular and being adopted by many countries abroad.It will be an effective measure to guarantee vegetable quality and safety in the wholesale markets if we establish this traceability system in China.This paper reports on a study which examined traceability proportion differences when vegetables enter and quit wholesale markets,and then attempted to analyze these differences.Based on the study,the paper conducts a regression analysis of vegetable suppliers' behaviors,and offers some explanations of the regression results.The main conclusions can be stated as follows: First,the implementation proportion of vegetable traceability system is still not high in Zhejiang Province,and the vegetable suppliers are not highly aware of the concept of traceability and its system;Second,vegetable suppliers' behaviors are influenced by many factors which include vegetable acquisition channels,market admission registration,government detection frequency,years of dealing in vegetables,income proportions,relative operation size in the market,and the degree of understanding of the traceability system.Implications of the study are discussed regarding the improvement of the vegetable traceability system in China,which include active promotion of the construction of vegetable production base and cooperatives,and the improvement of the flow of wholesale format.

Abstract:This paper sets forth the concept of traceability, its importance in improving added value of food and security of food supply chain. On the basis of explaining the structure of a food supply chain and analyzing the process of request and response of information, the paper provides a software architecture of a distributed traceable system of food supply chain, this architecture is based on web service, XML and related technologies. Then, the paper discusses robustness, security and performance of response time which are related to this software architecture. In conclusion, the paper points out that the future studies on traceable system in food supply chain will focus on two issues, one is how to improve the capability of each node in learning traceable information from others; the other is the study of dynamic strategies to minimize the access delay in the traceability systems.

Abstract:The increasingly heavier burden of government spending on food safety supervision is a common problem faced by regulatory agencies in various countries. Traceability is an effective quality and safety management measure and plays an important role in food safety risk control in many developed countries. However, the agricultural product traceability system in wholesale markets has low coverage in China. This article investigates the effects of regulatory policy mixes, i.e., food safety sampling intensity and information disclosure, on vendors' traceability adoption, theoretically and empirically based on a dataset containing the information of all aquatic product wholesale markets in three provinces of China. The results show that both sampling intensity and information disclosure positively influence the traceability adoption of vendors. However, the effect of food safety sampling intensity on traceability adoption relies on information disclosure. Specifically, an increase of 10 sampling tests enhances the probability that vendors adopt traceability by 4 percentage points in markets with information disclosure. These effects are heterogeneous across vendors with different business scales and with different supply chain distances from farms. The effects are larger for vendors with larger business scales and/or are closer to farms. The above results are robust after the inclusion of the instrumental variable into the models.

Abstract:Modern traceability technologies promise to improve supply chain management by simplifying recalls, increasing visibility, and verifying sustainable supplier practices. Initiatives leading the implementation of traceability technologies must choose the least-costly set of firms—or seed set—to target for early adoption. Choosing this seed set is challenging because firms are part of supply chains interlinked in complex networks, yielding an inherent supply chain effect: benefits obtained from traceability are conditional on technology adoption by a subset of firms in a product’s supply chain. We prove that the problem of selecting the least-costly seed set in a supply chain network is hard to solve and even approximate within a polylogarithmic factor. Nevertheless, we provide a novel linear programming-based algorithm to identify the least-costly seed set. The algorithm is fixed-parameter tractable in the supply chain network’s treewidth, which we show to be low in real-world supply chain networks. The algorithm also enables us to derive easily computable bounds on the cost of selecting an optimal seed set. We leverage our toolbox to conduct large-scale numerical experiments that provide insights into how the supply chain network structure influences diffusion. Abstract:Traceability defined as the ability to trace dependent items within a model and access the identity and attribute of the physical supply chain's objects plays a vital role in the supply chain management (SCM). However, achieving end-to-end traceability across the supply chain is currently quite a challenge from a technical, a co-ordination and a cost perspective. To identify suitable traceability methods, possible automatic identification technology (Auto-ID) is clarified by analyzing alphanumerical codes, bar codes, and the radio frequency identification (RFID). Its purpose is to study the different requirements of traceability in the SCM, and to provide a general framework for the identification of the product whole lifecycle information. Furthermore, the architecture and information models of the traceability system, the relationship of the presented Auto-ID technologies and how the methods work are presented to address the different stages' requirements together with their advantages.

Abstract:There has been considerable recent growth in supply chain (SC) traceability research due to increased Industry 4.0 solutions and the potential of traceability systems to enable SCs to bounce back from a crisis, thereby having a long-term impact on firm/SC performance. However, to date, the relationship between SC traceability and SC Resilience (SCRes) has not been fully explored. Using a systematic literature review, this paper first provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art understanding of traceability to enable an appreciation of the inherent benefits of its implementation and its role in the improvement of SCRes. Building on this understanding, a conceptual framework is developed showing that there is a direct relationship between traceability benefits, such as improved risk awareness, and SCRes. The framework also demonstrates indirect relationships between these benefits and four enablers of SCRes: flexibility, velocity, visibility and collaboration. Finally, a future research agenda is proposed, including further development of this conceptual framework.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the antecedent of supply chain transparency (SCT) and its impact on mitigating supply chain risk (SCRISK) and enhancing supply chain resilience (SCR). Furthermore, this study seeks to examine the moderating effect of supply chain integration (SCI) on the relationship between SCT and SCRISK, as well as SCT and SCR. Utilizing hierarchical regression on survey data from 332 Chinese companies, the results have revealed that SCI had a significant positive effect on SCT, which further leads to decreased SCRISK and increased SCR. Meanwhile, SCI negatively moderates the relationship between SCT and SCRISK but has no moderating effect on the relationship between SCT and SCR. By examining the critical role of SCT, the research opens the black box of the relationship between SCI and supply chain risk and resilience management and provides insights into how firms can establish and utilize SCT more effectively.

Abstract:Blockchain can help reduce fraud and improve visibility and traceability in supply chains. It has attracted significant investments in commercial practices, especially in the luxury industry. With the recent upgradation of consumption worldwide, consumers care more about the source of information and the value of products. Will tracing products using blockchain technology help competing luxury brands gain consumer trust and cultivate new competitive advantages? This paper proposes a supply chain model comprising two competing manufacturers selling online through retail or direct channels. It also explores whether and how manufacturers implement traceability strategies, including building traceability systems or joining third‐party blockchain platforms, considering blockchain's traceability. The results show that, when only one party adopts the traceability strategy, being the first mover to join a third‐party blockchain platform with high traceability is always beneficial for improving the profits of all parties. In this scenario, the blockchain platform should adopt as high traceability as possible. When both parties choose to trace the product source, a win–win strategy for them is to join third‐party blockchain platforms with low traceability. In this scenario, the untraced party is motivated to implement a traceability strategy. Furthermore, if consumer perceptions of traceability are high, an untraced manufacturer can obtain higher profits using the traceability strategy. Otherwise, low consumer perception of traceability leads to low‐price competition, which is harmful to luxury brands.

Abstract:<p>We seek to guide operations management (OM) research on the implementation of supply chain traceability systems by identifying business requirements and the factors critical to successful implementation. We first motivate the need for implementing traceability systems in two very different industries – cobalt mining and pharmaceuticals – and present business requirements and critical success factors for implementation. Next, we describe how we carried out thematic analysis of practitioner and scholarly articles on implementing blockchain for supply chain traceability. Finally, we present our results pertaining to the needs of different stakeholders such as suppliers, consumers, and regulators. The business requirements for traceability systems are curbing illegal practices; improving sustainability performance; increasing operational efficiency; enhancing supply‐chain coordination; and sensing market trends. Critical success factors for implementation are companies' capabilities; collaboration; technology maturity; supply chain practices; leadership; and governance of the traceability efforts. These findings provide a nascent measurement model for empirical work and a foundation for descriptive and normative research on blockchain applications for supply chain traceability.</p>

Abstract:Supply chain traceability (SCT) has become increasingly important for many reasons, including regulatory compliance, quality assurance, product counterfeiting, sustainability, and customer concerns on the provenance and authenticity of products. The complexity of globally dispersed supply chains is a major challenge for SCT. Blockchain technology's ability to support information sharing in a distributed network and create an immutable and traceable digital record of historical transactions makes it an attractive option for SCT. However, a major challenge persists – defining the scope of a blockchain-enabled SCT solution in terms of the number stages of the supply chain encompassed and the granularity of information captured at each supply chain stage. We analyze multiple cross-industry case studies and conduct an expert executive workshop to identify empirically the motivations and contextual factors influencing the diversity observed in the scope of traceability targeted by different organizations. We present a new evidence-based framework to define the scope of SCT depending on the motivations for and purpose of traceability. The framework specifies five identification levels with five levels of granularity of information to inform and support decision-making on the types of data to be captured at each level across the supply chain for effective and scalable blockchain-enabled SCT solutions. The study highlights the need for more research examining the optimal level of traceability for different industries and supply chain configurations.

Matching Traceability and Supply Chain Coordination: Achieving Operational Innovation for Superior Performance

Abstract:Operational innovation is effective in overcoming supply chain challenges and achieving superior performance. In this study, we build on the socio-technical system (STS) perspective to explore operational innovation in the supply chain context. Specifically, a system comprising traceability and supply chain coordination (SCC) is proposed as a type of Internet-based operational innovation. Survey data of manufacturing firms were analyzed by a configuration approach. Three clusters of firms were identified with distinct configurations of traceability and SCC. As predicted by the STS perspective, firms can realize operational innovation by matching traceability and SCC properly, thereby achieving superior operational performance and customer satisfaction. Our findings expand the understanding of operational innovation in the supply chain context. This study contributes to the literature of operational innovation, STS and supply chain management. Managerial implications about operational innovation in Internet-based supply chain management are provided.

Abstract:The supply chain plays an important role in daily life, and its traceability ensures product quality and safety. Therefore, an efficient and reliable solution to improve supply chain traceability is urgently needed. Because of its advantages of being decentralized, tamper-proof, and transparent, the emerging blockchain technology should address the problems of unreliable data and low tracking efficiency in traditional traceability systems. This paper explores blockchain-based supply chain traceability solutions, reviews recent research, and identifies challenges. First, the basics of blockchain are introduced, and the traditional traceability model and stakeholder needs are described. Then, the existing publications and enterprise applications are reviewed and analyzed in detail. Using blockchain is found to bring many benefits. It is also found that the current academic solutions are mostly based on mainstream blockchain platforms and lack specific and comprehensive evaluation. Finally, challenges and future research questions are discussed. Future research could focus on designing targeted consensus mechanisms, designing appropriate access control, the role of regulators in the supply chain, etc. This review shows that blockchain has great potential to address traceability issues, but many challenges remain.

Abstract:This research proposes a game theory model in a supply chain (SC) involving one manufacturer and one retailer. The SC works in a global market in which consumers are located worldwide and subject to traceability issues that can create distrust of the product quality. This issue can be resolved by implementing blockchain technology which provides benefits in terms of high traceability along with low transaction costs. However, blockchain negatively impacts the environment because of their high energy consumption. Therefore, in this study, we capture the trade-offs between traceability and sustainability for blockchain adoption by characterizing a game theory model. Our findings show that high levels of distrust pushes firms to avoid the implementation of blockchain. In such circumstances, blockchain is not sufficient to make consumers recognize the product quality and trust the firms’ practices. In contrast, low levels of distrust can make blockchain an economically suitable technology conditioned to minimal environmental damages; otherwise, firms need to carefully evaluate the trade-offs between distrust and sustainability. Since the adoption of blockchain leads to an increase in prices and decrease of distrust, two factors determine whether to pursue this technology or not: low consumer sensitivity to price and high sensitivity to quality. In this study, we develop three specific cases where we model: 1) the direct impact of blockchain on distrust, 2) a stochastic distrust term, and 3) a Stackelberg game. Each case confirms our results and strengthens the robustness of our findings.
