Abstract:An easily prepared ionic liquid was synthesized by a one-step method and applied in SO2 absorption efficiently. The cation of the ionic liquid is a supramolecular structure consisting of NH+4 and tetraglyme, similar to the structure of NH+4 and crown ether, and the anion is selected as SCN-. The ionic liquid has good thermal stability. Under the conditions of 293 K and 1 bar, one mol ionic liquid can absorb 2.73 mol SO2, which is about 30% higher than tetraglyme. The absorption mechanism was characterized using IR and NMR. And the results confirmed that the interaction mechanism between SO2 and the ionic liquid is a physical interaction rather than a chemical interaction.

Abstract:A series of tetraglyme-sodium salt ionic liquids have been prepared and found to be promising solvents to absorb SO2. The experiments here show that [Na-tetraglyme][SCN] ionic liquid has excellent thermal stability and a 30% increase in SO2 absorption capacity compared to other sodium salt ionic liquids and the previously studied lithium salt ionic liquids in terms of molar absorption capacity. The interaction between SO2 and the ionic liquid was concluded to be physical absorption by IR and NMR.

Abstract:The ionic liquid 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium lactate (TMGL) was supported onto porous silica particles via a facile impregnation-vaporization method. The TMGL-supported particles gave high porosity and large specific surface area. The SO2 sorption/desorption properties of the silica-supported TMGL (TMGL-SiO2) were evaluated, and high SO2 sorption capacity and rate were achieved. Its capacity reached 0.6 g SO2/g TMGL in 15-30 min with pure SO2 gas and 0.15 g SO2/g TMGL in 17 h with a N-2/SO2 mixture gas that contained 2160 ppm SO2. The SO2 concentration was reduced to 12.6 ppm after sorption. The TMGL-SiO2 system could be reused for many sorption/desorption cycles without change in its capacity. It was also characterized by good mechanical strength and thermal stability at temperature up to 130 degrees C. The SO2 sorbent system appears to be useful in gas desulfurization.

Abstract:Solubilities of SO2 in ethylene glycol derivatives were determined by dynamic isothermal gas-liquid equilibrium (GLE) experiments, and the thermodynamic parameters of the absorption processes were calculated. The GLE results indicated that the solubilities of SO2 in ethylene glycol derivatives increase in the order: diols < monomethyl ethers < dimethyl ethers, with the enthalpy values ranging from -23.2 to -43.3 kJ mol(-1). The regeneration experiment found that the absorption of SO2 in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether is reversible, and the solvents can be reused without a significant loss of absorption capacity. The interactions between SO2 and ethylene glycol derivatives were investigated by UV, IR and NMR. In addition, a H-1-NMR spectroscopy technique with external references was used to investigate the physical absorption process of SO2 for the first time, in order to avoid the influence of deuterated solvents. Spectroscopic investigations showed that the interactions between SO2 and ethylene glycol derivatives are based on both the charge-transfer interaction and hydrogen bond. Ethylene glycol derivatives with desirable absorption capacities and excellent regeneration abilities are promising alternatives to conventional sorbents in SO2 separation.

Abstract:In this paper, a diethylene glycol monomethyl ether (DGME) + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) system was used for the absorption of dilute SO2, and the gas–liquid equilibrium (GLE) data of the binary system for SO2 at p = 123.15 kPa and T= (303.15 K-318.15 K) were measured by a GLE device. Meanwhile, different temperatures and different ratios were also measured, Henry’s constants at different temperatures were fitted based on the measured data, and the thermodynamic parameters of dissolution enthalpy, dissolution entropy, and dissolution Gibbs free energy of the dissolution process were calculated. The results of five cycles of SO2 absorption and resolution showed that the maximum absorption of SO2 in the binary system was 0.85 g/g. The desorption rate could reach 97%, and the absorption and desorption capacities did not decrease significantly after the cycle. The mechanism of SO2 absorption in the binary system was discussed and analyzed by combining spectral analysis and quantum chemistry. The spectroscopic results show that the weak interaction forces between DGME, DMSO, and SO2 are hydrogen bonding forces and dipole–dipole interaction forces, which lay the theoretical foundation for the application and practice of binary hybrid systems. This can provide important GLE data for the design and operation of organic solvent absorption and desorption of SO2 in flue gas desulfurization, and the prepared absorbent has a potential industrial application value.

Abstract:Capturing sulfur dioxide (SO2) with organic solvent is a promising desulfurization method because of not only its superior performance of absorption and desorption for SO2 but also the recyclable feature of solvent. Therefore, the dilute sulfur dioxide (SO2) absorption in ethanediamine with ethylene glycol (EG) or various aqueous polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) solutions was studied in this work. The experimental results illustrate that the systems of pure ethanediamine and ethanediamine with PEG400 or PEG400 plus water can generate white precipitation after absorbing SO2 and these precipitations have same chemical constitution with the molecular structural formula being H2O⋯NH2CH2CH2NHH⋯OSO, revealing that a molecular ethanediamine reacts just with a molecular SO2 and the interaction of them is attributed to the hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the decomposition temperature of the precipitation may be 168 °C and PEG400 solution can be recycled originating from the white precipitation being separated easily through heating for a while in the hot water, which is deemed as a potential method for SO2 removal.

Abstract:Three new hydroxylammonium dicarboxylate ionic liquids (ILs) dimethylethanolammonium dimalonate ([DMEAH][dimalonate]), dimethylethanolammonium dimalate ([DMEAH][dimalate]) and dimethylethanolammonium diglutarate ([DMEAH][diglutarate]) were synthesized and mixed with free DMEA and water to form novel hybrid solvents for SO2 absorption. The mixed absorbents exhibited low viscosity in the range of 6-13 mPa s at 313.2 K, favoring the transfer performance of SO2 absorption. Significantly, they reached SO2 absorption equilibrium in less than 50 s, and their absorption capacities were as high as 0.1-0.6 mol SO2 per mol IL at 313.2 K and 0.004 bar SO2 partial pressure. SO2 solubility increased with increasing DMEA/IL molar ratio, whereas desorption efficiency decreased. pH significantly affected SO2 absorption and desorption performance in the mixed absorbents. The optimal pH for desulfurization was approximately 4.5-5.5, a compromise between absorption and desorption ability. Compared with pure task-specific ILs for SO2 absorption, which are too expensive and viscous for flue gas desulfurization, the mixed absorbents described in this study have more practical applications. Abstract:SO2 absorption capabilities of DEGDME+H2O system with different compositions were systemically investigated. The DEGDME+H2O system exhibited superior SO2 absorption capability and optimal desorption property with a desorption rate of higher than 94% under the desorption conditions. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the DEGDME+H2O system possessed remarkable SO2 absorbing and releasing capability after multiple recycles. Moreover, GLE data were measured for dilute SO2 in the system of DEGDME+H2O, in which SO2 partial pressures were determined in the range of 0 to 140 Pa. By fitting of GLE data, HLC, Delta H, Delta S and Delta G of SO2 absorption process were obtained. UV, FTIR, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR spectra of absorbing systems in the SO2 absorption processes were studied to elucidate the absorption mechanism. On the basis of the spectral results, the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and SaEuro broken vertical bar O interaction between SO2 with the absorption system were discussed.

Abstract:Isothermal gas–liquid equilibrium (GLE) data were measured at 298.15K and 122.66kPa for dilute SO2 in the binary system ethylene glycol (EG)+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), in which SO2 partial pressures were calculated in range of (0–130)Pa. The solubility of dilute SO2 in the binary system gradually increased with the increasing DMSO concentration in the whole composition. Based on the GLE data, Henry’s law constants (HLC) of dilute SO2 in the binary system EG (1)+DMSO (2) were obtained. The regeneration experiments showed that the 97.6% SO2 could be separated from the dissolving SO2 solution at 80°C and bubbling N2 within 30min; meanwhile, SO2 desorption ran smoothly and solubility of SO2 no significant dropped after five-successive absorption–desorption cycles. Furthermore, to obtain important reaction mechanism, the intermolecular interaction among SO2, EG, and DMSO were investigated by UV–vis, FTIR, and 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques. Spectral results showed that the interaction among EG, DMSO, and SO2 were resulted from both the O→S charge-transfer interaction and intermolecular hydrogen bonding.
Acidic Protic Ionic Liquid-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents Capturing SO2 with Low Enthalpy Changes

Abstract:With the aim of lowering energy consumption for gas regeneration, rational design of absorbents with low absorption enthalpy changes while retaining good gas solubility is of both scientific and practical significance. Herein, we demonstrated that acidic protic ionic liquid (APIL)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which comprise N-ethylimidazole hydrochloride ([EimH]Cl) and ethylene glycol (EG), were able to reversibly absorb SO2 with high solubility (11.60 mol kg(-1)) and SO2/CO2 selectivity (655) at 293.2 K and 101.3 kPa. Meanwhile, [EimH]Cl/EG DESs exhibit very low enthalpy changes (?H-r(m)) ranging from -27.1 to -25.6 kJ mol(-1), and thus ease of desorption at very mild temperature conditions (303.2 K) with desorption ratios up to 99.6%. Recycling experiments showed that no obvious loss in capacity was found after six absorption-desorption cycles, suggesting good regeneration performance of [EimH]Cl/EG DESs. Moreover, spectroscopic analysis revealed the charge-transfer interaction between [EimH]Cl/EG and SO2.

Abstract:The development of novel absorbents is essential for SO2 removal. In this study, a novel ionic liquid (IL, [BHEP][HSO4]) was prepared, and water was selected as the co-solvent. The density and viscosity of aqueous [BHEP][HSO4] were measured and the SO2 absorption performance was systematically investigated. Furthermore, the thermodynamic properties of SO2 in aqueous [BHEP][HSO4] were calculated. Additionally, the mechanism of SO2 absorption in aqueous [BHEP][HSO4] was confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It showed that [BHEP][HSO4] absorbed 0.302 g.g(-1) (g SO2/g IL) at an SO2 partial pressure of 2000 mu l. L-1 at 303.2 K, and the SO2 desorption enthalpy was -39.63 kJ.mol(-1). Abstract:The solubilities of sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) in triethyl citrate (TEC), acetyl triethyl citrate (ATEC), tributyl citrate (TBC), and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) were measured using the isochoric saturation method under pressures of up to 600 kPa and at temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 323.15 K. The results show that the SO2F2 absorption in these solvents is a physical process, and the solubility follows the order of ATBC > TBC > ATEC > TEC. Furthermore, Henry's law constants and thermodynamic properties such as standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy changes of SO2F2 solvation were obtained. Henry's law constant based on mole fraction in citrate derivatives varies from 2.02 to 5.79 MPa at T = 293.15 to 323.15 K. All the dissolution enthalpies were negative under experimental conditions. Additionally, the performance of SO2F2 in these citrate derivatives was further compared with that in other physical absorbents. It proved that these biobased citrate derivatives have potential use in the removal of SO2F2 from fumigation exhaust gas.

Abstract:The application of ionic liquids (ILs) for acidic gas absorption has long been an interesting and challenging issue. In this work, the ethyl sulfate ([C2OSO3](-)) anion has been introduced into the structure of guanidinium-based ILs to form two novel low-cost ethyl sulfate ILs, namely 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3]) and 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3]). The ethyl sulfate ILs, together with 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2]) and 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2]), are employed to evaluate the SO2 absorption and desorption performance. The recyclable ethyl sulfate ILs demonstrate high absorption capacities of SO2. At a low pressure of 0.1 bar and at 20 °C, 0.71 and 1.08 mol SO2 per mole of IL can be captured by [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3], respectively. The absorption enthalpy for SO2 absorption with [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] are -3.98 and -3.43 kcal mol(-1), respectively. While those by [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2] turn out to be only 0.17 and 0.24 mol SO2 per mole of IL under the same conditions. It can be concluded that the guanidinium ethyl sulfate ILs show good performance for SO2 capture. Quantum chemistry calculations reveal nonbonded weak interactions between the ILs and SO2. The anionic moieties of the ILs play an important role in SO2 capture on the basis of the consistently experimental and computational results.
Efficient SO2 Capture at Ultra-Low Concentration Using a Hybrid Absorbent of Deep Eutectic Solvent and Ethylene Glycol

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered as the highly effective absorbents for sulfur dioxide (SO2) capture. However, the high viscosity of DESs and the resulting slow absorption rate as well as low absorption capacity at low SO2 concentration seriously hinder their industrial application. In this study, DES of N-methyldiethanol-amine (MDEA) and imidazole (Im) is simply blended with ethylene glycol (EG) forming a hybrid absorbent, namely MDEA/Im-EG, which exhibits extremely high SO2 capture capacity at low concentration. In particular, SO2 capture capacity in MDEA/Im-EG (molar ratio = 1:1) reaches 0.446 g SO2/g absorbent at 293.2 K with SO2 concentration of 2000 ppm. Moreover, the corresponding desorption enthalpy is only-40.67 kJ/mol. To well understand the results, thermodynamic analysis of SO2 capture is performed and the SO2 capture mechanism is speculated by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract:The SO2 solubility in ionic liquids and absorption mechanisms with different functionalities, including ether, halide, carboxylate, dicarboxylate, thiocynate, phenol, amino, azole groups, etc., are presented in this review. Strategies of improving SO2 capture with low binding energy and the separation performance from CO2 are also concluded. Generally, moderate basicity is favourable for enhancing SO2 capacity and the water (below 6 wt%) effect on absorption is indefinite but generally slight. Introducing electron-withdrawing substituents such as nitrile, halogen, aldehyde and carboxylic groups are proposed to decrease the chemical absorption enthalpy between ionic liquid and SO2 in order to reduce regeneration power consumption. Although it is promising, the absorption enthalpy is still much higher than the physisorption performance especially of the ether-functionalized ones. The biocompatible choline-based, betaine-based, and amino acid ionic liquids have clear trends to be applied in SO2 capture due to their biodegradability, nontoxicity and easy accessibility. Generally, comparing to the traditional solvents, ionic liquids have made great improvement in SO2 capacity, however, the high viscosity and desorption energy are two main obstacles for SO2 absorption and separation. Molecular simulations have been applied to reveal the absorption regimes involving the roles of basic functionalities and physical interactions especially the hydrogen bonds, which could be referred for structure designing of the available ionic liquids with readily fluid characteristics and absorption ability.
Efficient SO2 Absorptions by Four Kinds of Deep Eutectic Solvents Based on Choline Chloride

Abstract:Four kinds of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride (ChCl) with ethylene glycol (EG), malonic acid (MA), urea, and thiourea as hydrogen bond donors were prepared and characterized. All these DESs show good thermal stability and can be stable at 363 K, which is beneficial for the application in flue gas desulfurization. Then, SO2 absorption capacities of these DESs were determined at different temperatures and SO2 partial pressures. The absorption results demonstrate that ChCl EG (1:2) and ChCl thiourea (1:1) DESs exhibit excellent absorption performances, and the absorption capacities are 2.88 and 2.96 mol SO2 per mol DES at 293 K and 1 atm, respectively. In addition, the SO2 absorption and regeneration experiments were conducted. All solvents can be regenerated at 343 K with N-2 bubbling, and the absorption capacities of DESs remain without a significant loss after six absorption and desorption cycles. What's more, the absorption mechanism of SO2 in these DESs were investigated by IR and H-1 NMR.

However, the high viscosity of DESs and the resulting slow absorption rate as well as low absorption capacity at low SO 2 concentration seriously hinder their industrial application. In this study, DES of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and imidazole (Im) is simply blended with ethylene glycol (EG) forming a hybrid absorbent, namely MDEA/Im-EG, which exhibits extremely high SO 2 capture capacity at low concentration. In particular, SO 2 capture capacity in MDEA/Im-EG (molar ratio = 1:1) reaches 0.446 g SO 2 /g absorbent at 293.2 K with SO 2 concentration of 2000 ppm. Moreover, the corresponding desorption enthalpy is only −40.67 kJ/mol. To well understand the results, thermodynamic analysis of SO 2 capture is performed and the SO 2 capture mechanism is speculated by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract:This study proposes the capture of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) from waste gas using an ionic liquid (IL), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf2N]), and examines the process from a molecular level to the laboratory scale, which is then scaled up to the industrial level. The binding energy and weak interactions between DMS/DMDS and the anion/cation in [EMIM][Tf2N] were investigated using quantum chemistry calculations to identify the capture mechanism at the molecular scale. A thermodynamic model (UNIFAC-Lei) was established by the vapor−liquid equilibrium data of the [EMIM][Tf2N] + DMS/DMDS systems measured at the laboratory scale. The equilibrium and continuous absorption experiments were performed, and the results demonstrated that [EMIM][Tf2N] exhibits a highly efficient capture performance at atmospheric conditions, particularly, absorption capacities (AC) for DMS and DMDS are 189.72 and 212.94 mg g−1, respectively, and partial coefficients (PC) as more reasonable evaluation metrics for those are 0.509 × 10-4 and 6.977 × 10-4 mol kg−1 Pa−1, respectively, at the 100 % breakthrough. Finally, a mathematical model of the strict equilibrium stage was established for process simulations, and the absorption process was conceptually designed at the industrial scale, which could provide a decision-making basis for chemical engineers and designers.
