Abstract:The ionic liquid 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium lactate (TMGL) was supported onto porous silica particles via a facile impregnation-vaporization method. The TMGL-supported particles gave high porosity and large specific surface area. The SO2 sorption/desorption properties of the silica-supported TMGL (TMGL-SiO2) were evaluated, and high SO2 sorption capacity and rate were achieved. Its capacity reached 0.6 g SO2/g TMGL in 15-30 min with pure SO2 gas and 0.15 g SO2/g TMGL in 17 h with a N-2/SO2 mixture gas that contained 2160 ppm SO2. The SO2 concentration was reduced to 12.6 ppm after sorption. The TMGL-SiO2 system could be reused for many sorption/desorption cycles without change in its capacity. It was also characterized by good mechanical strength and thermal stability at temperature up to 130 degrees C. The SO2 sorbent system appears to be useful in gas desulfurization.

Efficient, Selective, and Reversible SO2 Capture with Highly Crosslinked Ionic Microgels Via a Selective Swelling Mechanism

Abstract:SO2 capture through physisorption is a promising environmental benign technology to eliminate the emission of SO2. However, designing an efficient adsorption material with high capacity and selectivity of SO2 as well as excellent reversibility remains challenging. Here, a class of highly crosslinked nonporous poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) xerogels is prepared with high ionic density by photopolymerization of Gemini IL monomers and a microfluidic technology is further explored to prepare the corresponding monodisperse PIL microgels with uniform and controllable sizes at the diameter range from 43 to 250 mu m. This kind of novel dense nonporous ionic xerogels/microgels completely exclude the adsorption of common gases (CO2, CH4, etc.), but exhibit very high SO2 adsorption capacity (498 mg g(-1)) via selective swelling mechanism. Unprecedented SO2/CO2 and SO2/CH4 uptake selectivities with the value up to 614 and 1992, respectively, are achieved. The selective swelling mechanism is validated by optical microscope and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. More importantly, these kinds of xerogels show excellent reversibility in adsorption-desorption cycles. Column breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent performance of these PIL xerogels in SO2 capture. This work demonstrates that designing a nonporous material that has specific swelling interactions with certain molecules can be an effective strategy for realizing extremely high selectivity.

Abstract:A series of tetraglyme-sodium salt ionic liquids have been prepared and found to be promising solvents to absorb SO2. The experiments here show that [Na-tetraglyme][SCN] ionic liquid has excellent thermal stability and a 30% increase in SO2 absorption capacity compared to other sodium salt ionic liquids and the previously studied lithium salt ionic liquids in terms of molar absorption capacity. The interaction between SO2 and the ionic liquid was concluded to be physical absorption by IR and NMR.

Abstract:SO2 emission has become an important issue due to its harmful impact on human health and the ecological environment. Adsorption separation is an energy-efficient technology to capture SO2, but it suffers from competitive adsorption of CO2. Here, we present a strategy to improve the separation performance of porous adsorbents through the fabrication of mixed-matrix adsorbents. By the introduction of a perm-selective polymer (P-(D-[VImC(6)]-Br)) as the matrix to enclose anion-pillared microporous materials (SIFSIX-3-Ni), CO2 molecules were selectively blocked, while the SO2 molecules could still permeate the polymer matrix and access the porous particles of SIFSIX-3-Ni. As a result, a high SO2 (0.2%)/CO2 (10%) uptake ratio of 32 at 298 K and 1 bar and a high SO2 uptake capacity of 0.67 mmol g(-1) at 0.002 bar were achieved for the mixed-matrix adsorbents of SIFSIX-3-Ni@PIL-1/1. The strategy for fabricating a perm-selective matrix around the porous adsorbent particles to improve the adsorption performance is generally applicable to other porous adsorbents.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are suitable for the absorption of acid gases such as SO2 because of their unique properties. In this work, a new method was developed for the highly efficient capture of SO2 by introducing a phenyl group into the azole-based ionic liquids. It was found that these phenyl-containing azole-based ionic liquids reacted with SO2 through multiple-site interactions between the anion and SO2, resulting in an extremely high SO2 capacity of up to similar to 5.7 mole per mole ionic liquid. Spectroscopic investigations and quantum calculations show that the dramatic enhancement in the SO2 capacity originated from the enhanced pi...S interaction between the phenyl group on the anion and SO2. Furthermore, the captured SO2 was easy to release by heating or bubbling N-2 through the ionic liquid. This efficient and reversible process using these phenyl-containing azole-based ionic liquids with an enhanced pi...S interaction provides an excellent alternative to current SO2 capture technologies.
Chloride‐Reinforced Carbon Nanofiber Host As Effective Polysulfide Traps in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is one of the most promising alternatives for the current state‐of‐the‐art lithium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical energy density and low production cost from the use of sulfur. However, the commercialization of Li–S batteries has been so far limited to the cyclability and the retention of active sulfur materials. Using co‐electrospinning and physical vapor deposition procedures, we created a class of chloride–carbon nanofiber composites, and studied their effectiveness on polysulfides sequestration. By trapping sulfur reduction products in the modified cathode through both chemical and physical confinements, these chloride‐coated cathodes are shown to remarkably suppress the polysulfide dissolution and shuttling between lithium and sulfur electrodes. From adsorption experiments and theoretical calculations, it is shown that not only the sulfide‐adsorption effect but also the diffusivity in the vicinity of these chlorides materials plays an important role on the reversibility of sulfur‐based cathode upon repeated cycles. Balancing the adsorption and diffusion effects of these nonconductive materials could lead to the enhanced cycling performance of an Li–S cell. Electrochemical analyses over hundreds of cycles indicate that cells containing indium chloride‐modified carbon nanofiber outperform cells with other halogenated salts, delivering an average specific capacity of above 1200 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C.

Abstract:The application of ionic liquids (ILs) for acidic gas absorption has long been an interesting and challenging issue. In this work, the ethyl sulfate ([C2OSO3](-)) anion has been introduced into the structure of guanidinium-based ILs to form two novel low-cost ethyl sulfate ILs, namely 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3]) and 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium ethyl sulfate ([(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3]). The ethyl sulfate ILs, together with 2-ethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2]) and 2,2-diethyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2]), are employed to evaluate the SO2 absorption and desorption performance. The recyclable ethyl sulfate ILs demonstrate high absorption capacities of SO2. At a low pressure of 0.1 bar and at 20 °C, 0.71 and 1.08 mol SO2 per mole of IL can be captured by [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3], respectively. The absorption enthalpy for SO2 absorption with [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][C2OSO3] are -3.98 and -3.43 kcal mol(-1), respectively. While those by [C2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2] and [(C2)2(2)(C1)2(C1)2(3)gu][NTf2] turn out to be only 0.17 and 0.24 mol SO2 per mole of IL under the same conditions. It can be concluded that the guanidinium ethyl sulfate ILs show good performance for SO2 capture. Quantum chemistry calculations reveal nonbonded weak interactions between the ILs and SO2. The anionic moieties of the ILs play an important role in SO2 capture on the basis of the consistently experimental and computational results.

Abstract:A series of dual functionalized ionic liquids with metal chelate cations from surfactant and alkali metal salt were designed, prepared, and used for SO2 capture. The effect of metal ions, coordination number, anionic structures, temperature, and pressure on SO2 absorption was investigated. The interaction of these functionalized ionic liquids with SO2 was explained by spectroscopic investigation. The results showed that these metal-containing ionic liquids exhibited high absorption capacity through a combination of physical and chemical interaction of SO2 with basic anions and ether-containing cations as well as excellent reversibility (21 recycles). Considering the easy preparation, low cost, and excellent performance, these dual functionalized metal-containing ionic liquids provide significant improvements over traditional ionic liquids, indicating the promise for industrial application in SO2 capture.

Abstract:A novel strategy for SO(2) capture through multiple-site absorption in the anion of several azole-based ionic liquids is reported. An extremely high capacity of SO(2) (>3.5 mol/mol) and excellent reversibility (28 recycles) were achieved by tuning the interaction between the basic anion and acidic SO(2). Spectroscopic investigations and quantum-mechanical calculations showed that such high SO(2) capacity originates from the multiple sites of interaction between the anion and SO(2). These tunable azole-based ionic liquids with multiple sites offer significant improvements over commonly used absorbents, indicating the promise for industrial applications in acid gas separation.

Abstract:Six acid salt ionic liquids (ASILs), triethylbutylammonium dicarboxylates, have been synthesized to act as green materials for SO2 capture. The experimental results reveal that the ASILs can trap SO2 reversibly and chemically with a large capacity of 0.112 up to 0.232 (mass ratio) at 15.5 kPa and of 0.374 to 0.456 (mass ratio) at 100 kPa and 40 °C. Two of these ASILs are interestingly found to have a low viscosity that enables the fast mass transfer of SO2. A reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the chemical absorption based on FTIR spectra and structural calculations using the density functional theory. Thermodynamic analysis indicates the enthalpy of the reaction of SO2 with the ASILs is low (−29.9 and −42.2 kJ mol−1 for [N2224][dimaleate] and [N2224][dimalonate], respectively). Additionally, the ASILs have a high thermal stability, which favors their potential application in flue gas desulfurization.

Abstract:The capture of SO2 with ionic liquids (ILs) has attracted much attention in recent years; however, the examples involving SO2 capture and utilization (SCU) in the same medium are scarce. Here, we demonstrated an innovative strategy for SO2 capture and fixation to cyclic sulfites in dual ether-functionalized protic ionic liquids (PILs) for the first time. These dual ether-functionalized PILs exhibited low viscosities and remarkable SO2 loading capacities (up to 6.12 mol of SO2 per mol of IL and 1.34 g of SO2 per g of IL at 1.0 bar) that is conducive to conversion of SO2 absorbed in situ. The mechanism of absorption was proposed which includes both chemical and physical absorptions from the spectral results and theoretical calculations. Particularly, the SO2 absorbed in the PILs was directly transformed into cyclic sulfites without any additives; meanwhile, these PILs were also used as efficient catalysts for the synthesis of a series of cyclic sulphites using equimolar SO2 and epoxides. Good to excellent yields of cyclic sulfites were obtained for varied substrates. The dual roles of PILs as both absorbents and catalysts as well as the recyclability of the PILs are examined in detail in this paper. This innovative strategy not only eliminated the traditional intensive energy input for SO2 desorption but also enabled the production of value-added cyclic sulfites.

Abstract:This study proposes the capture of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) from waste gas using an ionic liquid (IL), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf2N]), and examines the process from a molecular level to the laboratory scale, which is then scaled up to the industrial level. The binding energy and weak interactions between DMS/DMDS and the anion/cation in [EMIM][Tf2N] were investigated using quantum chemistry calculations to identify the capture mechanism at the molecular scale. A thermodynamic model (UNIFAC-Lei) was established by the vapor−liquid equilibrium data of the [EMIM][Tf2N] + DMS/DMDS systems measured at the laboratory scale. The equilibrium and continuous absorption experiments were performed, and the results demonstrated that [EMIM][Tf2N] exhibits a highly efficient capture performance at atmospheric conditions, particularly, absorption capacities (AC) for DMS and DMDS are 189.72 and 212.94 mg g−1, respectively, and partial coefficients (PC) as more reasonable evaluation metrics for those are 0.509 × 10-4 and 6.977 × 10-4 mol kg−1 Pa−1, respectively, at the 100 % breakthrough. Finally, a mathematical model of the strict equilibrium stage was established for process simulations, and the absorption process was conceptually designed at the industrial scale, which could provide a decision-making basis for chemical engineers and designers.

A Novel Zwitterionic Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolyte for More Efficient and Safer Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:The shuttle effect of polysulfide and the flammability of the conventional electrolyte are the two major obstacles restricting the development progress of lithium-sulfur batteries. Exploring highly efficient electrolyte components coupled with the conventional electrolyte is a reliable strategy to solve these issues. However, the current electrolyte components usually relieve these issues at the expense of the sacrificed electrochemical performance. Herein, a novel zwitterionic ionic liquid named as TLTFSI is reported, which exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 3.7 x 10(-3) S cm(-1), a wide electrochemical potential window from 1.51 to 4.82 V at 25 degrees C, and a high thermal decomposition temperature of 275 degrees C. The optimized TLTFSI-based electrolyte is nonflammable and performs superior electrochemical performance in terms of larger capacity, better rate capability, and longer cyclic life compared with the conventional organic electrolyte. The robust performance is attributed to the high intrinsic ionic conductivity, the suppressed polysulfide dissolution/diffusion, and the high interface compatibility toward the lithium anode of the TLTFSI-based electrolytes. This present work represents the first demonstration of the zwitterionic ionic liquid to efficiently improve the overall electrochemical performance and the safety of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:A strategy for facile preparation of chelate-based ionic liquids (ILs) by simple chelation was developed, where a series of chelate-based ILs with tunable functionalized anions (azole), cheap ligands (PEG400), and simple metal ions (Li+, Na+, and K+) were designed for SO2 capture under 2000 ppm in flue gas. Both the anion-tunable strategy and the fine-tuned strategy were used to explore the effect of anions, ligands, and metal ions. The experimental absorptions, spectroscopic investigations, and DFT calculations indicated that the process of SO2 capture was mostly based on the nucleophilic effect of electronegative N site toward SO2. Furthermore, the tuning of alkali metal ions was proved to have little influence on SO2 absorption. The ideal IL, [Na(PEG400)] [Tetz], exhibited splendid available absorption capacity of SO2 (0.57 mol/mol), excellent selectivity (63 under 2000 ppm SO2/15% CO2), and outstanding reversibility, indicating good potential for industrial application.

Abstract:Carbonate-based electrolytes demonstrate safe and stable electrochemical performance in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, only a few types of sulfur cathodes with low loadings can be employed and the underlying electrochemical mechanism of lithium-sulfur batteries with carbonate-based electrolytes is not well understood. Here, we employ in operando X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy to shed light on a solid-phase lithium-sulfur reaction mechanism in carbonate electrolyte systems in which sulfur directly transfers to Li 2 S without the formation of linear polysulfides. Based on this, we demonstrate the cyclability of conventional cyclo-S 8 based sulfur cathodes in carbonate-based electrolyte across a wide temperature range, from −20 °C to 55 °C. Remarkably, the developed sulfur cathode architecture has high sulfur content (>65 wt%) with an areal loading of 4.0 mg cm −2 . This research demonstrates promising performance of lithium-sulfur pouch cells in a carbonate-based electrolyte, indicating potential application in the future.
Efficient SO2 Capture and Conversion to Cyclic Sulfites by Protic Ionic Liquid-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents under Mild Conditions

Abstract:SO2 capture has been a research hotspot targeting mitigation of SO2 emission, and the subsequent conversion of SO2 is an ingenious protocol, which can avoid regeneration of absorbents and realize utilization of SO2 simul-taneously. To this end, a series of protic ionic liquids (PILs)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed of N- alkylimidazole hydrochloride-based PILs and azoles were designed for the capture and conversion of sulfur di-oxide. Among them, [MImH]Cl/2-MIm (1:1) exhibited SO2loading capacity as high as 1.45 g/g at 1.0 bar and 20 degrees C, and remarkable SO2 solubility up to 0.56 g/g were achieved at low concentrations (0.6 vol%, 20 degrees C). In particular, the absorbed SO2 can be directly converted to cyclic sulfites through cycloaddition reaction catalyzed by these DESs under very mild condition (30 degrees C and 1.0 bar of SO2) without any solvent of additive. By using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS), yields of cyclic sulfites were determined to be excellent for styrene oxide (98 %) and 1,2-epoxybutane (97 %), and moderate for the sterically hindered epoxides (56 %-76 %). Recycling experiments proved that these DESs maintained good absorption and catalytic performance after five cycles. Furthermore, the absorption and catalytic mechanism were studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and theoretical calculations, revealing the multi-site ab-sorption mechanism and synergic catalysis in PIL-based DES.
