Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:This paper proposed a novel static magnetic field sensor which integrates a Terfenol-D rod with a Fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot(FBG-FP) cavity. In order to improve the performance of the sensor, a theoretical model about pre-stress and the magnetic field sensitivity is established. And the correctness of the model is verified by experiments. The experimental results show that the sensor has good linearity in response to static magnetic field. The sensitivity of the sensor is 5×10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-4</sup> pm/μT when the value of pre-stress is 3 MPa.

Abstract:In this paper, a cement-based magnetoelectric (ME) laminated composite is fabricated by bonding the piezoelectric material lead zirconate titanate (PZT) between two C-M layers made of the mixture of cement and magnetostrictive material to form a sandwich structure. As well known, inherent measurement errors of traditional electric sensors are definitely induced by magnetic interference in magnetic field. Thus, it is impossible to measure the magnetostrictive strain due to a variable magnetic field. In this paper, the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were used instead of the traditional strain gauges to measure the strain of the cement-based magnetostrictive layers in a variable bias magnetic field. It can be concluded that the FBG sensors is a reliable choice as its tiny size, high sensitivity and immunity to magnetic interference.
A highly sensitive magnetic field sensor based on FBG and magnetostrictive composite with oriented magnetic domains

Abstract:In this paper, an optical fiber sensor for magnetic field measurement is proposed using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and a magnetostrictive composite. The FBG coated by the composite is used as the magnetic field transducer. The composite consists of the Terfenol-D particles and a matrix of epoxy resin. An external magnetic field is employed to orient the magnetic domains in the composite. An FBG encapsulation structure is designed to enhance sensor sensitivity. The results of the calibration test demonstrate that the sensor has good repeatability and a high sensitivity of 9.83 pm/mT, which is about 3 ∼ 4 times higher than other sensors based on the similar principle in the literature. The dynamic test shows a fast response of the sensor to the dynamic magnetic field. This optical fiber sensor has the instinct advantage of immunity to electromagnetic interference and possesses good potential in power engineering applications.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic of magnetic-controlled refractive index, magnetic fluid was used as a sensitive medium in fiber optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity. Combined with the temperature sensing property of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), a novel fiber optic F-P magnetic field sensor with temperature compensation was proposed. The sensor probe has the advantages of simple structure, low cost, and high magnetic field measurement accuracy. Magnetic field and temperature can be simultaneously measured by the proposed sensor. Sensing mechanism and experimental results indicated that the temperature cross effect on magnetic field measurement can be effectively compensated using a FBG. The maximal magnetic field intensity is up to 600 Gs with a sensitivity of 0.04 nm/Gs and measurement resolution is 0.5 Gs.

Abstract:A compact optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on a magnetic-ionic-liquid-functionalized photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The magnetic field sensor was fabricated by splicing an index-guiding PCF having one magnetic-ionic-liquid-infiltrated (MIL-infiltrated) air hole in the innermost layer infiltrated with conventional single-mode fibers. The transmission spectral magnetic response of the proposed sensor have been measured and theoretically analyzed. Owing to the effective interaction between the MIL and transmission light as well as the controllable attenuation property of MIL, the magnetic field sensitivity reaches up to -0.01991 dB/Oe for a relatively linear magnetic intensity range of 0 to 440 Oe.

Abstract:Film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) is widely-used as RF filter or sensor due to its high frequency and Q-factor. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of FBAR as flexible magnetic sensors, like sticker. The proposed Sensor has a ZnO piezoelectric sandwich structure with magnetostrictive nickel (Ni) electrodes on the Polyimide (PI) substrate. The characteristics of the magnetic sensors have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The testing results show its sensitivity is about 100Hz/Gs.

Abstract:A hybrid fiber-optic sensor consisting of a micro extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (MEFPI) and an etched fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed, which can measure strain and magnetic field simultaneously. The etched FBG is sealed in a capillary with ferrofluids to detect the surrounding magnetic field. FBG with small diameter will be more sensitive to magnetic field is confirmed by simulation results. The MEFPI sensor that is prepared through welding a short section of hollow-core fiber (HCF) with single-mode fiber (SMF) is effective for strain detection. The experiment shows that strain and magnetic field can be successfully simultaneously detected based on hybrid MEFPI/FBG sensor. The sensitivities of the strain and magnetic field intensity are measured to be up to 1.41 pm/mu epsilon and 5.11 pm/mT respectively. There is a negligible effect on each other, hence simultaneously measuring strain and magnetic field is feasible. It is anticipated that such easy preparation, compact and low-cost fiber-optic sensors for simultaneous measurement of strain and magnetic field could find important applications in practice.

Abstract:A magnetic field measurement method based on the magneto-volume effect of magnetic fluid (MF) and Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer (FPI) is proposed, which has higher magnetic field sensitivity and shorter response time than the traditional optical fiber methods. The MF is partially injected into the fabricated FP cavity composed of two sections of SMFs and a capillary glass tube (CGT), where the FPI is made up of optical fiber end face and MF end face. When the external magnetic field is applied to the sensor, the volume change of MF will cause the change of air cavity length. Therefore, the reflection spectrum changes with external magnetic field due to the magneto-volume effect of MF. Experimental results show that the magnetic field sensor shows a sensitivity of 268.81 pm/Gs from 15.5 to 139.7 Gs even with a small amount of MF. The response time is 0.2 s at a step magnetic field of 7.7, 31.0, 46.5, and 139.7 Gs. In this work, the magnetic field sensor boasts high sensitivity, good repeatability, short response time, and low cost, which shows a great potential in applications.

Abstract:The monitoring of magnetic field plays an important role in aerospace, industrial production, and other fields. A novel sensor for simultaneous detection of magnetic field and temperature (MFT) by taking advantage of the micro-nanofiber Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed. Micro-nanofiber is formed by tapering single-mode fibers (SMFs). Furthermore, the MZI is cascaded to fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for the simultaneous detection of temperature. The structure is encapsulated in a glass tube filled with magnetic fluid (MF) to measure magnetic field intensity (MFI). FBG monitors temperature during MFI detection for the purpose of temperature compensation. By detecting the transmission spectra of FBG and MZI, it is possible to achieve simultaneous measurement of MFT. Experimental results show that the magnetic field sensitivity can reach 0.175 nm/Oe in the range of 0–133.5 Oe. The temperature sensitivity of the sensor is −0.486 nm/°C in the range of 30 °C–60 °C. The sensing structure has a detection limit of 3.09 Oe for MFI and 0.471 °C for temperature. The sensor has the characteristics of high sensitivity and compact size and can be used for dual-parameter measurements, which has broad application prospects in the fields of power systems and electromagnetic environment monitoring.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new type of optical functional material, which has interesting optical characteristics under an external magnetic field. In this letter, the magneto-optical characteristic of the magnetic fluid was adopted to form a novel fiber-optic magnetic field sensor. The sensor probe was composed of an extrinsic fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer and magnetic fluid. The refractive index of the magnetic fluid would be changed with the increase of magnetic field. Preliminary experiment was carried out to verify the feasibility of the sensor. The magnetic field measurement sensitivity was 0.0431 nm/Gs in the experiment. The measurement resolution was better than 0.5 Gs at the measurement range from 0 to 400 Gs. The sensor has the advantages of simple structure, compact size, and easy fabrication.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid (MF) infiltrated fiber-optic interference structures can be used to realize miniature magnetic field sensor for various applications needing sensitive magnetic field measurement, however, these sensors are typically also sensitive to temperature variations. To solve the problem of temperature cross sensitivity, an MF-infiltrated micro-tapered long-period fiber grating (MT-LPFG) and a femtosecond laser inscribed fiber Bragg grating (fsFBG) cascaded sensing structure is proposed and demonstrated. The MT-LPFG is fabricated by a fused tapering method under the illumination of a CO2 laser and is inserted into a glass capillary infiltrated with MF for magnetic field measurement, and the fsFBG is cascaded to the MT-LPFG for temperature measurement. Through the simultaneous monitoring of the resonant wavelength shift of the MT-LPFG and the Bragg wavelength shift of the fsFBG, temperature and magnetic field strength can be simultaneously extracted through a sensitivity coefficient matrix. As a result, the influence of the temperature on the MF-infiltrated MT-LPFG can be effectively compensated. Experimental results show that a magnetic field strength sensitivity of 21.86 pm/Oe can be achieved in a magnetic field strength range of 10–80 Oe and a temperature range of 30–60 ℃.

Abstract:A kind of dual-parameter fiber sensor based on the Terfenol-D rod combined with the cascaded Fabry-Pérot interferometer-fiber Bragg grating (FPI-FBG) structure is demonstrated, which integrates the FBG with the Fabry-Pérot cavity made by fiber and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The problem of temperature cross-sensitivity in magnetic field measurement is simply and ingeniously avoided. The experimental results show that the sensing system's temperature and magnetic field sensitivities are 121.56 pm/°C and 21.6 pm/mT, respectively. By using the dual-parameter matrix, the resolutions of temperature and magnetic field measurement are obtained to be 1.003 °C and 0.069 mT, respectively.

Abstract:An air gap Fabry–Perot fiber interferometric magnetic field sensor based on magnetostrictive effect is proposed. The sensor is composed of single mode fiber (SMF), silica capillary and magnetostrictive material, forming the Fabry–Perot cavity of "single mode fiber-air gap-single mode fiber". With the change of external magnetic field, the magnetic volume of magnetostrictive material changes, the length of gas chamber changes, resulting in the change of optical path difference. Therefore, changes in the magnetic field can be obtained by monitoring the wavelength of the reflection spectrum. Within the magnetic field range of 3.68mT-5.72mT, the magnetic field sensitivity and linearity of the sensor are 0.299 nm/mT and 0.99767, respectively. In addition, temperature changes can also affect the sensor. At 51–56 °C, its temperature sensitivity is 0.163 nm/°C, and its linearity is 0.99831. The temperature cross sensitivity coefficient of the sensor is 0.545mT/°C. This simple, low-cost, and high-performance sensor is a promising candidate for magnetic field monitoring.

Abstract:The linear measuring range is limited by the relative magnetic permeability of magnetic fluid (MF) in tradition fiber magnetic field sensors utilizing MF refractive index modulation effect. The article proposes a fiber optic sensor with the help of MF magneto-shape effect, which can extend linear measuring range. The magneto-shape effect is not only related to the relative magnetic permeability of MF, but also to the magnetic field distribution on the concave, which can expand the linear measurement range of magnetic field. The sensing probe consists of single mode fiber (SMF)-air-MF-air-SMF. The measuring range of sensing structure can reach 402.1 Gs, the sensitivity is 180 pm/Gs from Gs and 81 pm/Gs at Gs. The response times of structure reach 50 ms and 137 ms at 45.5 Gs and 91.2 Gs, respectively. In addition, the linear measurement range of structure with magneto-shape effect is twice as high as that based on magneto-refractive index modulation effect under the premise of using the same MF. The sensing structure possesses the characteristics of fast response time, highly sensitive and large linear measurement range.

Abstract:A highly sensitive vector magnetic field sensor based on a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (FMZI) is proposed and demonstrated. The FMZI is composed of a micro-cavity that is fabricated in a single-step laser -induced micro-plasma process with a modest-powered nanosecond fiber laser. Combined with a magnetic fluid, the micro-cavity-based FMZI is constructed to a magnetic field sensor for vectorial sensing. The presented magnetic sensor exhibits a maximal strength sensitivity of 64 nm/mT that is the highest among reported vector magnetic field fiber sensors to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:To simplify the structure and improve the sensitivity of the optical fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) magnetic field sensor (MFS), an optical fiber extrinsic FP interferometric MFS based on Terfenol-D magnetostrictive material (TDMM) was designed and fabricated. Insert a TDMM with the diameter of 8mm and a length of 30mm into the cavity, and vapor-deposit 20% aluminum film on one end surface, and vapor-deposit 60% transmission inducing film on the fiber end surface. The two film layers are used as a FP with the cavity length of 1.7mm. The relationship between spectral drift and magnetic field sensing was theoretically analyzed. When the magnetic field intensity is 10~30mT, the sensitivity of magnetic field sensing is 0.081nm/mT and the interference signal extinction ratio is as high as 9dB at room temperature. The sensor is featured as the interferometric signal demodulation is simple and potentially can be used in engineering field.

Abstract:A magnetic field measurement with enhanced sensitivity based on the Vernier effect of a dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a cascaded giant magnetostrictive material-fiber Bragg grating (GMM-FBG) and Monel-400-fiber Bragg grating (Monel-400-FBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The OEO loop incorporates two reflected signals from the dual FBGs, serving as separate light sources injected into two paths with distinct fiber lengths. The dispersion introduced in the loop allows the wavelength shift of the GMM-FBG to be translated into a frequency shift of the microwave signal within the OEO cavity. As the GMM-FBG's central wavelength shifts with the magnetic field variation, the change of the monitoring OEO frequency enables precise measurement of magnetic field information. Diverging from conventional single-loop configurations, the proposed OEO generates the Vernier effect due to the length disparity between the two loops. Consequently, by monitoring the frequency variations in the envelope of the OEO's micro-wave signal, the sensitivity scale factor for sensing information is significantly enhanced. Experimental findings reveal a magnetic field sensitivity of approximately 201 Hz/mT for the single loop, increasing to 8 kHz/mT with the application of the Vernier effect, which represents a 40-fold improvement. Furthermore, a Monel-400 alloy hosts the reference FBG, possessing a similar thermal expansion coefficient to GMM. This design mitigates temperature crosstalk in magnetic field measurements. Compared to utilizing an unprocessed reference FBG, the magnetic field error induced by temperature is reduced from 2.46 to 0.06 mT. Additionally, flexible sensitivity scale factors can be achieved by designing the varied path length differences. Experimental results demonstrate magnetic field sensitivities of 12.7 and 21.9 kHz/mT, with increases of 64 and 109 times, respectively.

Abstract:An all-solid fiber-tip Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) coated with a nickel film is proposed and experimentally verified for magnetic field sensing with high sensitivity. It is fabricated by splicing a segment of a thin-wall capillary tube to a standard single-mode fiber (SMF), then inserting a tiny segment of fiber with a smaller diameter into the capillary tube, and creating an ultra-narrow air-gap at the SMF end to form an FPI. When the device is exposed to magnetic field, the capillary tube is strained due to the magnetostrictive effect of the nickel film coated on its outer surface. In addition, owing to the unique breakpoint sensitivity-enhancement structure of the air-gap FPI, the elongation of the capillary tube whose length is over 100 times longer than the air-gap width is entirely transferred to the cavity length change of the FPI, and the sensor is extremely sensitive to the magnetic field as proved by our experiments, achieving a high sensitivity of up to 2.236 nm/mT for a linear magnetic field range from 40 to 60 mT, as well as a low-temperature cross-sensitivity of 56 µT/°C. The all-solid stable structure, compact size (total length of ∼3.0 mm), and reflective working mode with high magnetic field sensitivity indicate that this sensor has good application prospects.
Highly sensitive magnetic field sensors based on Fe2O3 nanorods grown on the surface of a tapered few mode fiber

Abstract:A magnetic field (MF) sensor with a stable structure and high sensitivity has been proposed and experimentally verified. We used the water bath method to produce a layer of Fe2O3 nanorods on a tapered few mode fiber (FMF) surface to form a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The experiment found that the nanostructure produced on the surface of FMF were particularly stable and firm. Under the action of an external MF, the magnetic permeability of a Fe2O3 nanorod will change, leading to a change in its refractive index, resulting in a linear shift in the resonance wavelength of MZI. The experimental results showed that the MF sensitivity of MZI reached -0.5348 nm/mT in 10 mT∼80 mT. In addition, MZI has a certain sensitivity to environmental humidity and temperature. A long-period fiber grating and a fiber Bragg grating are cascaded with MZI to achieve a simultaneous measurement of three quantities and eliminate their cross-sensitivity.
