Abstract:This paper examines the value of political connections in the Chinese IPO market. We find a positive relationship between CEO/chairman’s political connections and the probability of IPO approval of entrepreneurial firms. We further identify that minority shareholders value those connections and give a market premium to the connected firms after the firms go public. We provide evidence that connected independent directors and PE/VC investors bring important networks which facilitate firms’ access to the IPO market, albeit the former complements and the latter substitutes the CEO/chairman’s connections. We argue that in emerging markets where government intervention is still prevalent, the value of political connections does exist and entrepreneurial firms usually build political connections through different ways in order to facilitate their access the IPO market and obtain a higher market premium.

Abstract:This study examines the impact that political connections have on Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) performance and the decisions of Chinese listed firms. We find that political connections destroy (create) value in SOEs (non-SOEs). Our findings show that connected SOEs are more likely to acquire local targets, especially when the local unemployment rate is high and when the firms are controlled by the local government, and they are less likely to conduct vertical mergers. M&A decisions of connected non-SOEs are less influenced by the government; instead, political connections in non-SOEs help bidders to integrate vertically and obtain external financing support.

Abstract:This study examines the value of political capital in the Chinese IPO market. We find a positive relationship between a politically connected executive and the probability of IPO approval of entrepreneurial firms. We further identify that shareholders value those connections and give a market premium to connected firms after the firms go public. We provide evidence that other types of political capital gained through external sources, such as politically connected sponsors and PE investors, also bring benefits to the firms in their IPO approval, and these connections substitute for the effect of the executive’s political connections on IPO approval. We argue that in emerging markets where government intervention is still prevalent, political capital does create value and entrepreneurial firms usually build political capital to facilitate their access to the IPO market, although other types of political capital do not bring further benefits into the post-IPO market.

Abstract:This study focuses on whether China's financial system still needs market-oriented transition after the recent global financial crisis, which suggests financial liberalisation may weaken financial stability. We analyse the structure of the financial system and highlight the fact that the current system is not well configured for dealing with fluctuation. The good economic performance over the crisis is mainly built on the administrative resources deployed that counterbalanced the negative effect of short-term fluctuation. The high cost of this makes market liberalisation reform imperative. We take the German financial model as an example to indicate how financial liberalisation and stability can coexist under certain conditions.
Political Capital Vs. Constraint: Evidence from CEO Turnovers in Chinese Private Firms

Abstract:Previous theoretical and empirical studies suggest that CEOs’ political connections are valuable to firms. We examine whether such connections become constraints if the expected political capital fails to materialize and the firm lacks other type of political power in place. Using a sample of listed firms in China, we show that politically connected CEOs in privately controlled (i.e., not state-owned) firms have longer tenure, lower turnover, and weaker turnover-performance sensitivity than non-politically connected CEOs. Further identification tests show that these turnover patterns are not consistent with alternative explanations for turnover patterns such as superior managerial ability or reduction in managerial myopia. The turnover patterns are less pronounced in firms that have alternative political power, such as connected boards or state ownership. Following the turnover of politically connected CEOs, performance improves only for the state-owned firms. Our results call for new theories that comprehend both values and costs of political connection.

Abstract:Research on transitional socialist societies has explored trends in income inequality and issues concerning who gains and who loses during market reforms. We find that income inequality in a major Chinese city declined only slightly during the first decade of reform policies; it then increased dramatically in the subsequent five years. Strategic position in the state bureaucracy continues to be an important determinant of income, although connections to the market system are becoming alternate sources of advantage. We interpret these findings in light of the historical and institutional context of urban China

Abstract:This paper documents stock market responses to the arrest of Shanghai's top leader by the Chinese central government in September 2006. The effects of personal-level and organizational-level connections to the local state are found to be negative and insignificant, respectively, on cumulative abnormal returns (CARs). Furthermore, companies having both personal and organizational political ties experienced the most adverse market reaction.
Interlinking Markets, Relational Contract and Economic Transition

Abstract:This paper extends the basic one-market relational contract to the interlinked one and characterizes the interactions between the degree of the social division of labor (extent of the market) and the modes of economic governance. A basic conclusion is that the dominant contractual form or governance is a function of the extent of the market. The less the extent of the market, the more important is the relational contract and vice versa. From this perspective, the transition from a central planning economy to the market economy is a process of more formal contracts substituting relational contracts. Chinese-style gradualism succeeded to the extent that the original self-enforcing relational contracts are still sustainable, while the Russian-style radical reforms rendered the original self-enforcing relational contracts unsustainable and led to governance failure. This paper also sheds some light on the China paradox that China obtained miraculous economic growth despite her lack of the efficient formal legal system and other formal institutional arrangements, i.e., because of the self-enforcing nature of the relational contracts formal institutional arrangements are not needed. In general, this paper provides a theoretical support for the so-called “Post-Washington Consensus" and characterizes the underlying microeconomic dynamics.

Abstract:Economic transitions in countries that move from state planning and redistribution to market exchange create business opportunities but also uncertainty, because many interdependent factors—modes of exchange, types of products, and forms of organizations—are in flux. Uncertainty is even greater when the country’s political institutions remain authoritarian because the rule of law is weak and state bureaucrats retain power over the economy. This study of listed firms in China, which has recently seen economic transition but persistent authoritarianism, shows that in such contexts, firms can reduce uncertainty by developing relationships with state bureaucrats, which help firms learn how state bureaucracies operate and engender trust between firms and bureaucrats. Together, knowledge and trust stabilize operations and help persuade bureaucrats to lighten regulatory burdens, grant firms access to state-controlled resources, and improve government oversight. Our results show that as economic transitions proceed and uncertainty increases, business–state ties increasingly improve firm performance. We also investigate two likely contingencies, industry and firm size, and two important causal mechanisms, access to bank loans and protection from related-party loans, and show that the value of business–state relations varies over time, depending on the trajectory of both economic and political institutions.

Abstract:This article examines the theories of institutional transformation from redistribution to markets in China from a new perspective of social integration. It argues that the transition is a process simultaneously involves the privatization of property rights, the shift of elite power, and the reorganization of interest groups. The study of China' s market transition thereby should focus on three questions: who dominants the property right? who controls the management? And who gets relatively more interests? The answers to these questions point to the shift of the underlying mechanism of integration, namely the integration of property right relationship, the integration of power and the integration of interests, among which the social relationship integration is pervasive, and crucial to understand the maintaining of social order in the course of China's transition to a market economy.

Abstract:As China has made enormous progress in liberalizing markets and integrating itself into the world economy and consequentially experienced rapid economic growth, most citizens have gained considerable economic freedom and civil liberties and raised their living standard. Such profound changes that have taken place during the last two decades have been studied and analyzed by Sinologists around the world. Political Connection and Market Valuation:Evidence from China Individual-controlled Listed Firms

Abstract:This study purposes to examine the link between political connection and market valuation in China's listed firms. Using 1,046 samples of individual-controlled firms during 1999—2004, we find that firms having local government political connections have a higher market valuation than those having central government political connections, while there is no significant relationship between political connection and market valuation. Moreover, our result shows that in provinces with higher governmental intervention on the economics sectors, local government political connections have positive effect on the market value. The more severe the local governments' intervention, the more positive effect of the local government connection on the firm value. We also show evidences that this local government political connection is helpful to get short-term loans from banks.

A litany of social policies enacted in recent years show that the Chinese government has both the political will and fiscal prowess to serve as a midwife for the birth of the social market. Nevertheless,China has yet to strengthen its will and prowess. Today there still exists a multitude of grave problems in Chinese society but it is a historical turning point to see the eventual emergence of social policy whose importance cannot be overestimated.

Abstract:Political connection in China is often tested for correlation with business success and government support under a suspicion that connected entrepreneurs enjoy special favors and protection. Research evidence is mixed. In revisiting the debate on political capital in China, we apply a socially embedded perspective on political connection. To this end we introduce two methodological innovations: (a) We develop a broader measure of political connectedness that covers the continuum from political connection to disconnection. (b) We integrate data on political connection with social network data. Specifically, we explore how the social structure around the individual entrepreneur affects performance above and beyond the often tested association between political ties and performance. We draw two conclusions: (1) The success association with political connection is discontinuous. Advantage is less for entrepreneurs weakly connected politically, but significant additional disadvantage arises for the politically disconnected. (2) The additional is that entrepreneurs disconnected from government show no benefit from having an advantaged business network. The politically connected with an advantaged business network show more prosperous business, higher returns on assets, and more likely survival over time. The politically disconnected show none of these benefits. We caution the entrepreneur who plans to ignore the government.

Abstract:American Sociological Review, Ahead of Print. This study examines how markets affect personal culture in the context of postsocialist China. Drawing on several bodies of literature, I argue that China's transition to a market economy promotes materialist values via two causal pathways. First, market transition entails a process of economic liberalization, which accentuates economic incentives and exacerbates existential insecurity. Second, market transition also entails a process of commodification that, by immersing individuals in market relations, crowds out intrinsic motives and normalizes the pursuit of material self-interests. My empirical analysis uses repeated cross-sectional data from a large-scale national survey to demonstrate the effect of market transition through the lens of work values. Taking advantage of China's regional variations in the pace of institutional change, I show that, between 2005 and 2015, provinces where market transition had made greater progress tended to experience a sharper rise in materialist work values. Additional analyses reveal significant differences in work values between state-sector employees and workers in the market sector, and that the relationship between market transition and materialist values extends beyond the work domain. These findings contribute to the theoretical literature on the cultural consequences of markets and the empirical knowledge on cultural change in contemporary China.

Abstract:Clarifying China's position in the global system is an important logical basis for developing national diplomacy. Although much research has been done on China's development status, most studies have been based on country comparisons or institutional environment. In today's networked era in which the global economy, trade, personnel, and information are closely connected, studies on China's global position and its status changes and influencing factors in multiple contact networks are still insufficient. In this study, from the perspective of diverse global contact networks, we constructed economic, cultural, and political influence indices to explore the changes and influencing factors on China's status in the global system from 2005 to 2018. The results show that during the study period, China's global influence in the fields of economic ties, cultural exchanges, and political contacts increased significantly, but its influence in the fields of cultural exchanges and political contacts lagged far economic ties. The pattern of China's economic influence on various economies around the world has shown a transformation from an 'upright pyramid' to an 'inverted pyramid' structure. The proportion of these economies in low-influence zones has decreased from more than 60% in 2005 to less than 20% in 2018. China's cultural and political influence on various economies around the world has increased significantly; however, for the former, the percentage of high-influence areas is still less than 20%, whereas for the latter the percentage of these economies in medium- and high-influence areas is still less than 50%. Analyses such as a scatter plot matrix show that geographical proximity, economic globalization, close cooperation with developing countries, and a proactive and peaceful foreign policy are important factors in improving China's status in the diverse global network system.

Abstract:PurposeBy integrating the resource management perspective and the optimal distinctiveness perspective, the purpose of this paper is to explain how firms configure their managerial ties and competences to identify entrepreneurial opportunities.Design/methodology/approachUsing survey data collected from 238 firms in a transition economy, this paper tests a model of firms’ exploration and exploitation competences under which managerial ties promote or constrain opportunity discovery.FindingsThe paper finds that managerial ties are positively related to opportunity discovery. More importantly, competence exploration strengthens the impact of business ties on opportunity discovery, whereas it weakens the impact of political ties. On the contrary, competence exploitation strengthens the effect of political ties on opportunity discovery, whereas it weakens the impact of business ties.Originality/valueFirst, the findings enrich the social network perspective of opportunity recognition by linking managerial social ties to opportunity discovery in the context of a transition economy. Second, this paper adds to current understanding of the resource management perspective and the optimal distinctiveness perspective by exploring the fit between different managerial ties (business ties vs political ties) and different competences (exploration vs exploitation) in contributing to opportunity discovery.
