Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) is a powerful and accurate tool, exploited in nuclear physics to investigate the ground-state and some of the collective properties of nuclei along the whole nuclear chart. Models based on DFT are not, however, suitable for the description of single-particle dynamics in nuclei. Following the field theoretical approach by A Bohr and B R Mottelson to describe nuclear interactions between single-particle and vibrational degrees of freedom, we have taken important steps towards the building of a microscopic dynamic nuclear model. In connection with this, one important issue that needs to be better understood is the renormalization of the effective interaction in the particle-vibration approach. One possible way to renormalize the interaction is by the so-called subtraction method. In this contribution, we will implement the subtraction method in our model for the first time and study its consequences.
Finite nuclei in an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

Abstract:We propose a new theoretical framework to investigate the properties of finite nuclei based on an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (eNJL) model, where the Dirac sea, the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and the quark degrees of freedom are considered by extending the SU(3) NJL model and treating baryons as clusters of quarks. The eNJL model can then be readily adopted to examine the matter states ranging from baryonic matter to quark matter in a unified manner. In this work, by assuming spherically symmetric finite nuclei and neglecting the center-of-mass or rotational corrections, we systematically investigate the properties of finite nuclei based on the eNJL model with additional pairing correlations. It is found that our model generally reproduces the binding energies of the 2495 nuclei ($A>2$) from the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2016) with the root-mean-square deviations $5.38$ MeV. The deviations are mainly attributed to the too large shell gaps at magic numbers $N(Z) =28$, 50, and 82 as well as the spurious shell closures at $N(Z)=34$, 58, and 92. Meanwhile, the obtained charge radii of 906 nuclei are systematically smaller than the experimental values with root-mean-square deviations $0.127$ fm. In our future study, we expect to reduce the uncertainties of our predictions by carefully calibrating the density dependence of coupling constants and considering deformations with microscopic collective corrections from the nucleons in the Fermi sea and quarks in the Dirac sea.

Abstract: Nuclear structure models built from phenomenological mean fields, the effective nucleon-nucleon interactions (or Lagrangians), and the realistic bare nucleon-nucleon interactions are reviewed. The success of covariant density functional theory, which starts from effective Lagrangians, to describe nuclear ground-state and excited-state properties and its influence on Brueckner theory within the relativistic framework are focused upon. The challenges and ambiguities of predictions for unstable nuclei without data or for high-density nuclear matter, arising from covariant density functionals, are discussed. The basic ideas in building an ab initio covariant density functional for nuclear structure from ab initio calculations with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions for both nuclear matter and finite nuclei are presented. The current status of fully self-consistent relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) calculations for finite nuclei or neutron drops (ideal systems composed of a finite number of neutrons and confined within an external field) is reviewed. The guidance and perspectives towards an ab initio covariant density functional for nuclear structure derived from the RBHF results are provided.

Abstract:A microscopic and consistent description of both nuclear structure and reactions is instrumental to extend the predictivity of models calculating scattering observables. In particular, this is crucial in the case of exotic nuclei not yet discovered. In this manuscript, we will present the plan of the Lund effort for a symmetry breaking description of bound and scattering observables using a generator coordinate method model based on an effective Hamiltonian constrained with a (Skyrme) functional. Following this, we will illustrate the steps to construct an optical potential for deformed nuclei from microscopic wavefunctions obtained with projected generator coordinate method from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov basis.

Abstract:Some emerging concepts of nuclear structure are overviewed. (i) Background: the many-body quantum structure of atomic nucleus, a complex system comprising protons and neutrons (called nucleons collectively), has been studied largely based on the idea of the quantum liquid (à la Landau), where nucleons are quasiparticles moving in a (mean) potential well, with weak “residual” interactions between nucleons. The potential is rigid in general, although it can be anisotropic. While this view was a good starting point, it is time to look into kaleidoscopic aspects of the nuclear structure brought in by underlying dynamics and nuclear forces. (ii) Methods: exotic features as well as classical issues are investigated from fresh viewpoints based on the shell model and nucleon–nucleon interactions. The 70-year progress of the shell–model approach, including effective nucleon–nucleon interactions, enables us to do this. (iii) Results: we go beyond the picture of the solid potential well by activating the monopole interactions of the nuclear forces. This produces notable consequences in key features such as the shell/magic structure, the shape deformation, the dripline, etc. These consequences are understood with emerging concepts such as shell evolution (including type-II), T-plot, self-organization (for collective bands), triaxial-shape dominance, new dripline mechanism, etc. The resulting predictions and analyses agree with experiment. (iv) Conclusion: atomic nuclei are surprisingly richer objects than initially thought.
Nuclear models for inclusive lepton-nucleus scattering in the quasi-elastic region and beyond

Abstract:High-precision measurements in neutrino oscillation experiments require a very accurate description of the lepton-nucleus scattering process. Several cross-section calculations are available, but important discrepancies are still present between different model predictions. For the quasi-elastic channel, dominated by one particle-one hole excitations, an overview over several nuclear models - specifically Relativistic Fermi Gas, SuperScaling Approach, Spectral Function, Hartree-Fock and Random Phase Approximation - is presented and compared with data for electron-nucleus scattering, a very important process for testing theoretical models validity, highlighting the specific features of each approach. Furthermore an ongoing microscopic calculation of the two particle-two hole excitations contribution to the electromagnetic response is presented, and some preliminary results are shown.

Abstract:Some new development in nuclear structure studies are reviewed briefly. Nuclear supersymmetry put forward in 1980 has been tested in odd - odd nucleus in 1999. In nuclear algebraic models, the problem of reduction in collectivity has been solved. There have been extensive analytic formulas for eletromagnetic transitions in octupole vibration in algebraic model, and they are convenient in analysing nuclear data. It is found that (158)Gd is the best experimental example for octupole vibration so far. In nuclear shell model, Monto Carlo shell model and projected shell model have made considerable advancement. Finally, an outlook for nuclear structure in 21st century is made briefly.

Abstract:A completely microscopic beyond mean-field approach has been elaborated to overcome some intrinsic limitations of self-consistent mean-field schemes applied to nuclear systems, such as the incapability to produce some properties of single-particle states (e.g. spectroscopic factors), as well as of collective states (e.g. their damping width and their gamma decay to the ground state or to low lying states). Since commonly used effective interactions are fitted at the mean-field level, one should aim at refitting them including the desired beyond mean-field contributions in the refitting procedure. If zero-range interactions are used, divergences arise. We present some steps towards the refitting of Skyrme interactions, for its application in finite nuclei.

Multiscale physics of atomic nuclei from first principles

Abstract:Atomic nuclei exhibit multiple energy scales ranging from hundreds of MeV in binding energies to fractions of an MeV for low-lying collective excitations. As the limits of nuclear binding is approached near the neutron- and proton driplines, traditional shell-structure starts to melt with an onset of deformation and an emergence of coexisting shapes. It is a long-standing challenge to describe this multiscale physics starting from nuclear forces with roots in quantum chromodynamics. Here we achieve this within a unified and non-perturbative framework that captures both short- and long-range correlations starting from modern nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. The short-range correlations which accounts for the bulk of the binding energy is included within a symmetry-breaking framework, while long-range correlations (and fine details about the collective structure) are included via symmetry projection. Our calculations accurately reproduce available experimental data for low-lying collective states and the electromagnetic quadrupole transitions in $^{20-30}$Ne. We also reveal coexisting spherical and deformed shapes in $^{30}$Ne, which indicates the breakdown of the magic neutron number $N=20$ as the key nucleus $^{28}$O is approached, and we predict that the dripline nuclei $^{32,34}$Ne are strongly deformed. By developing reduced-order-models for symmetry-projected states, we perform a global sensitivity analysis and find that the subleading singlet S-wave contact and a pion-nucleon coupling strongly impact nuclear deformation in chiral effective-field-theory. The techniques developed in this work clarify how microscopic nuclear forces generate the multiscale physics of nuclei spanning collective phenomena as well as short-range correlations and allow to capture emergent and dynamical phenomena in finite fermion systems.

Abstract:The nuclear collective models introduced by Bohr, Mottelson and Rainwater, together with the Mayer-Jensen shell model, have provided the central framework for the development of nuclear physics. This paper reviews the microscopic evolution of the collective models and their underlying foundations. In particular, it is shown that the Bohr-Mottelson models have expressions as macroscopic limits of microscopic models that have precisely-defined expressions in many-nucleon quantum mechanics. Understanding collective models in this way is especially useful because it enables the analysis of nuclear properties in terms of them to be revisited and reassessed in the light of their microscopic foundations.

Abstract:There has been significant recent progress in solving the long-standing problems of how nuclear shell structure and collective motion emerge from underlying microscopic inter-nucleon interactions. We review a selection of recent significant results within the ab initio No Core Shell Model (NCSM) closely tied to three major factors enabling this progress: (1) improved nuclear interactions that accurately describe the experimental two-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction data; (2) advances in algorithms to simulate the quantum many-body problem with strong interactions; and (3) continued rapid development of high-performance computers now capable of performing $20 \times 10^{15}$ floating point operations per second. We also comment on prospects for further developments.
Nucleonic models at finite temperature with in-medium effective fields

Abstract:We perform a calculation of dense and hot nuclear matter where the mean interaction between nucleons is described by in-medium effective fields and where we employ analytical approximations of the Fermi integrals. We generalize a previous work where we have addressed the case of the Fermi gas model with in-medium effective mass. In the present work, we fully treat the in-medium interaction by considering both its contribution to the in-medium effective fields, which can be subsumed by the mass in some cases, and to the potential term. Our formalism is general and could be applied to relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches. It is illustrated for different popular models -- Skyrme, nonlinear, and density-dependent relativistic mean-field models --, but also for the metamodel, and it provides a clear understanding of the in-medium correction to the pressure, which is present in the case of the Skyrme and metamodel but is not for the relativistic ones. For the Fermi integrals, we compare the analytical approximation to the, so-called, ``exact'' numerical calculations in order to quantitatively estimate the accuracy of the approximation.

Abstract:A new scheme to study the properties of finite nuclei is proposed based on the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The relativistic structure of the nucleon self-energies in nuclear matter depending on density, momentum, and isospin asymmetry is determined through a subtracted $T$-matrix technique. The scalar and vector potentials in nuclear matter are parametrized and extrapolated around the very low density region to provide the necessary basis for the finite nuclei calculation. The potentials of a single particle in finite nuclei are generated via a local density approximation (LDA). The surface effect of finite nuclei can be taken into account by an improved LDA. The bulk properties of nuclei can be determined in a self-consistent scheme, and the spherical nuclei $^{16}\mathrm{O},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{40,48}\mathrm{Ca},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{90}\mathrm{Zr},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{116,132}\mathrm{Sn}$, and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ are sampled for validation. The results show that the calculated binding energies are coincident with the experimental data, and the predicted values for radii and spin-orbit splitting of single-particle energies are reasonably described with an underestimation of about 10%. Basic features of finite nuclei in this scheme are consistent with those of more sophisticated DBHF calculations.

Abstract:We discuss calculation of nuclear corrections to the structure functions for the deep-inelastic scattering of muon and (anti)neutrino. Our approach includes a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as the treatment of Fermi motion and nuclear binding, off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions, nuclear pion excess and nuclear shadowing. We emphasize the dependence of nuclear effects on the type and C-parity of (anti)neutrino structure functions. We also examine the interplay between different nuclear effects in the Adler and the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules for nuclei.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the results of our study on the nuclear medium modifications of the meson electromagnetic form factors in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the help of the Schwinger proper-time regularization scheme to tame the loop divergence and simulate the effect of QCD confinement. In our current approach, the meson structure and nuclear medium are constructed in the same NJL model at the quark level. We examine the free-space and in-medium charge radii of kaon and pion, the spacelike elastic electromagnetic form factors of kaon and pion, and their quark-sector form factors, which reflect their internal structures. By comparing our result to experimental data, we found that the free-space elastic electromagnetic form factors of the mesons are consistent with the data, while the in-medium elastic electromagnetic form factors of the mesons are found to decrease as the nuclear matter density increases, leading to a rise of meson charge radius, which is consistent with the prediction of other theoretical calculations. We also predict the axial nucleon coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclear medium computed via the Goldberger-Treiman relation (GTR), which is crucial for searching the neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu \beta \beta$).

A unified mechanism for the origin and evolution of nuclear magicity

Abstract:A simple pattern of organisation, the nuclear shell structure, emerges from the complex interactions between nucleons in nuclei and determines, to some significant degree, nuclear structure properties. Recent experimental investigations of exotic nuclei revealed a shortfall in our current understanding of nuclear shell evolution and nuclear magicity. We introduce a novel perspective where the Dirac mass kinetic term, which stems from the singular participation of a spin-0 boson in the nuclear strong force, plays a pivotal role in generating the nuclear shell structure. Namely, the combination of the Dirac mass kinetic Term with the spin-orbit term redefines magic numbers both in stable and exotic nuclei. The identification of this mechanism allows to provide a broad understanding of the origin and evolution of nuclear magic numbers.

Abstract:Recent works on the relativistic description of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter at extreme conditions are reviewed. New effective interactions, PK1, PK1r and PKDD in the relativistic mean field( RMF) theory, are proposed with the center-of-mass correction included in a microscopic way. They are able to provide an excellent description not only for the properties of nuclear matter and neutron stars, but also for the nuclei near or far from the beta-stability line, including halos and giant halos at the neutron drip line in nuclei and hyper-nuclei. Based on the solution of the RMF equations, good spin symmetry is found in anti-nucleon spectra.
