Abstract:In this Letter, we utilize an acoustic-optic frequency shifter in a feedforward manner for automatic interpolation of dual-comb spectroscopy, where frequency tuning can be achieved at 5.45 THz/s with the step size precisely locked to the line spacing (54.5 MHz) of a referenced optical comb without complicated electronics or control programs. Our dual-comb spectrometer involves two near-infrared electro-optic combs at 25 GHz line spacings, nonlinearly converted into the mid-infrared region, revealing fundamental absorption lines of methane gas at 54.5 MHz resolution within a spectral range from 88.04 to 89.04 THz. The method and the system may be useful in many applications, including gas sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a rapid high-resolution frequency comb spectrometer involving a mode-locked laser comb and a multi-colour laser. The heterodyne detection of the two lasers enables hundreds of thousands of Doppler-limited molecular spectra to be recorded in a second. With this device, several P-branch transitions of the H13CN (gas) 2ν3-band are simultaneously interrogated at comb-line-defined resolution (54.5 MHz or 0.5 pm) within 3 μs. The single-measurement spectrum spans >200 GHz (∼1.6 nm) far beyond the electronic bandwidth (33 GHz) of our acquisition system. Without using asynchronous combs or dispersers and detection arrays, the spectrometer may benefit many gas sensing applications, such as environmental monitoring.

Near-infrared dual-comb spectroscopy of CO2 and N2O with a discretized highly nonlinear fiber

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an all-fibered dual-comb spectrometer based on a new design of highly nonlinear fiber to efficiently convert frequency combs from 1.55 micron to 2 micron We show that our spectrometer can be used to measure absorption profiles of rovibrational transitions of CO2 and N2O molecules, and especially their collisional self-broadening coefficients. The results show very good agreement with the HITRAN database and thus further measurements have been performed on a mixture CO2 /N2O to measure the broadening of the CO2 absorption lines resulting from the presence of N2O.

Abstract:We propose a new approach to near-infrared molecular spectroscopy, harnessing advanced concepts of optical telecommunications and supercontinuum photonics. We generate, without mode-locked lasers, two frequency combs of slightly different repetition frequencies and moderate, but rapidly tunable, spectral span. The output of a frequency-agile continuous wave laser is split and sent into two electro-optic intensity modulators. Flat-top low-noise frequency combs are produced by wave-breaking in a nonlinear optical fiber of normal dispersion. With a dual-comb spectrometer, we record Doppler-limited spectra spanning 60 GHz within 13 microseconds and 80-kHz refresh rate, at a tuning speed of 10 nm.s^(-1). The sensitivity for weak absorption is enhanced by a long gas-filled hollow-core fiber.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.

Abstract:Absorption spectroscopy of fundamental ro-vibrational transitions in the mid-infrared region provides a powerful tool for studying the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase and for sensitive and quantitative gas sensing. Laser frequency combs permit novel approaches to perform broadband molecular spectroscopy. Multiplex dual-comb spectroscopy without moving parts can achieve particularly high speed, sensitivity and resolution. However, achieving Doppler-limited resolution in the mid-infrared still requires overcoming instrumental challenges. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on difference-frequency generation of frequency-agile near-infrared frequency combs that are produced using electro-optic modulators. The combs have a remarkably flat intensity distribution, and their positions and line spacings can be freely selected by simply dialing a knob. Using the proposed technique, we record, in the 3-μm region, Doppler-limited absorption spectra with resolved comb lines within milliseconds, and precise molecular line parameters are retrieved. Our technique holds promise for fast and sensitive time-resolved studies of, for example, trace gases.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) in the 1.65 µm wavelength band are promising for methane sensing and extended high-capacity optical communications. In this work, a frequency-modulated (FM) OFC is generated from a 1.65 µm single-section quantum well laser. This is characterized by a 1 kHz-wide beatnote signal at ∼19.4 GHz. Typical FM optical spectra are shown and optical linewidth of the OFC narrows through the mutual injection locking process in the comb formation. No distinct pulse train is observed on oscilloscope, which conforms with the FM operation. Furthermore, to add further evidence that four-wave mixing (FWM) is the driving mechanism of the comb formation, FWM frequency conversion characterization is conducted on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fabricated together with the tested laser. An efficiency of ∼-30 dB confirms the capability of FM mode locking.

Abstract:Broadband precision spectroscopy is an invaluable tool for high-fidelity species diagnostics as well as multispecies sensing in complex real-world environments. However, concurrent demands for broad spec-tral coverage and high spectral resolution present great challenges to both optical measurement systems and data acquisition and processing. We report methodological and experimental demonstration of a mid -infrared direct optical frequency comb (OFC) spectrometer, using Fourier-transform spectroscopy (FTS) with a compressed sensing (CS) algorithm. Efficient data sampling and accurate spectral recovery are demonstrated with comb-teeth-resolving resolution of 0.0083 cm-1 (250 MHz) over a spectral range of 300 cm-1. The v3 band of CH4 is measured, and validated against conventional FTS results and theoretical calculations. Studies on the effect of compression ratio show that a compressed interferogram using as few as 2% of the regular sample points can effectively recover the high-resolution broadband spectrum with an accuracy of 1.9%. The developed diagnostic system bears promising potential for accurate, real-time, multispecies sensing that is pressingly needed for studying the dynamics of complex multicomponent systems.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have become an important light source for spectroscopy due to their excellent features in both time and frequency domains. Two frequency combs with slightly different repetition frequencies lead to asynchronous-optical-sampling dual-comb spectroscopic detection. Apart from linear spectroscopy, the dual-comb technique also features special advantages in nonlinear spectroscopic detection. The detection principle of dual-comb nonlinear spectroscopy is presented, and the applications of dual-comb technique in multidimensional coherent spectroscopy and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy arc reviewed. Also, the advantages of the dual-comb technique, the technical features, the current research status, and the development trend in nonlinear spectroscopy arc analyzed and summarized.

Abstract:Laser absorption spectroscopy has proven to be an effective approach for gas sensing, which plays an important role in the fields of military, industrial, medical and basic research. This paper presents a multiplexed gas sensing system based on optical frequency comb (OFC) calibrated frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) tuning nonlinearity. The system can be used for multi-parameter synchronous measurement of gas absorption spectrum and multiplexed optical path. Mul-ti-channel parallel detection is realized by combining wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) techniques. By introducing nonlinear optical crystals, broadband spectrum detection is simultaneously achieved over a bandwidth of hundreds of nanometers. An OFC with ultra-high frequency stability is used as the frequency calibration source, which guarantees the measurement accuracy. The test samples involve H 13 C 14 N, C 2 H 2 and Rb vapor cells of varying densities and 5 parallel measurement experiments are designed. The results show that the measurement accuracies of spectral absorption line and the optical path are 150 MHz and 20 μm, respectively. The scheme offers the advantages of multiplexed, multi-parameter, wide spectrum and high resolution detection, which can realize the identification of multi-gas components and the high-precision inversion of absorption lines under different environments. The proposed sensor demonstrates great potential in the field of high-resolution absorption spectrum measurement for gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy has emerged as a promising technique for regional multigas mon-itoring with its conspicuous advantages of broadband spectral coverage, high spectral resolution, and rapid update rate. However, it is challenging to realize its full potential due to the undesirable mutual coherence of the dual-comb source and turbulence in the air path, which hinder it from field-deployed open-path applications. Here, phase-sensitive open-path dual-comb spectroscopy based on free-running combs is reported, in which dual-purpose compensation is proposed to provide immunity against both the time jitter of comb sources and turbulent noise. Broadband and high-fidelity atmospheric amplitude and phase spectra containing gas absorption and dispersion information over a 900-m turbulent air path are acquired. For the rovibrational resonances of CO2 and H2O in 6250-6660 cm-1, the achieved residual of the amplitude spectrum is no more than 0.01, and the average residual of the phase spectrum is 0.2 mrad, corresponding to about 0.2 as of relative timing noise or a refraction-index change of about 6 x 10-14 over the target path. The precision of concentration retrieval is about 3 ppm for CO2 in 30 s. A simulated gas -leakage measurement validates the dynamic monitoring capability of this system. This highly effective noise-compensation method provides the possibility of deploying the portable configuration and holds the potential to propel environmental protection and atmospheric science.
Dual-comb Spectroscopy for On-Site Spectroscopic Detection

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a novel high-performance spectral measurement technology. However, conventional DCS systems often rely on optical frequency comb seed sources, which have limited output power and are not capable of withstanding the substantial losses encountered during on-site detection. Additionally, their spectral range is often narrow and may not be suitable for the target gases. In this work, we demonstrate a high-power, wide-spectral-range dual-comb spectroscopy measurement system for onsite spectral detection. The system comprises two optical frequency combs with close repetition rates, utilizing erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and dispersion compensating fibers for power amplification and broadening of the spectrum. We successfully detect absorption spectra of multiple gases, demonstrating good agreement with the simulated spectrum from the HITRAN standard database. The spectral resolution can reach sub-picometer-level (similar to 0.45 pm). This work shows the potential of dual-comb spectroscopy technology transitioning from laboratory research to industrial on-site applications.

Abstract:A dynamic spectroscopic characterization scheme for fast spectral variations based on dual asynchronous undersampling with triple optical frequency combs is proposed and demonstrated here. The tri-comb scheme leverages two of the combs to simultaneously sample the fast spectral variations applied to the third comb. The repetition rate differences for both pairs of combs are relatively small, in order to maintain sufficiently large spectral measurement ranges. The corresponding sampling rates could be much slower than a fast time-varying spectral modulation to be measured. Nevertheless, despite of the frequency ambiguity in the undersampled dual-comb results, it is shown that it is possible to identify the original frequency of spectral variations based on the difference in the undersampled frequency domain information. Experimental results show that our scheme can increase the frequency demodulation range by at least two orders of magnitude while retaining the accuracy and spectral measurement range of similar DCS schemes. Demonstration based on a tri-comb mode-locked fiber laser is carried out to measure the dynamic spectral response from a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), to which up to 110 kHz of vibration is applied. This scheme could further extend the capability of dual-comb spectroscopic techniques, and it also illustrates the potential of the low-complexity multi-comb laser source for novel yet practical applications.

Two-octave frequency combs from all-silica-fiber implementation

Abstract:Mid-infrared frequency comb spectroscopy enables measurement of molecular at megahertz spectral resolution, sub-hertz frequency accuracy and microsecond acquisition speed. However, the widespread adoption of this technique has been hindered by the complexity and alignment sensitivity of mid-infrared frequency comb sources. Leveraging the underexplored mid-infrared window of silica fibers presents a promising approach to address these challenges. In this study, we present the first experimental demonstration and quantitative numerical description of mid-infrared frequency comb generation in silica fibers. Our all-silica-fiber frequency comb spans over two octaves (0.8 $\mu$m to 3.5 $\mu$m) with a power output of 100 mW in the mid-infrared region. The amplified quantum noise is suppressed using four-cycle (25 fs) driving pulses, with the carrier-envelope offset frequency exhibiting a signal-to-noise ratio of 40 dB and a free-running bandwidth of 90 kHz. Our developed model provides quantitative guidelines for mid-infrared frequency comb generation in silica fibers, enabling all-fiber frequency comb spectroscopy in diverse fields such as organic synthesis, pharmacokinetics processes, and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Mid-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy has proven an invaluable tool for the study of the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase. The advent of frequency combs advances the frontiers of precise molecular spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate, in the important 3-{\mu}m spectral region of the fundamental CH stretch in molecules, dual-comb spectroscopy with experimental coherence times between the combs that exceed half-an-hour. Mid-infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy using two frequency combs with self-calibration of the frequency scale, negligible contribution of the instrumental line-shape to the spectral profiles, high signal-to-noise ratio and broad spectral bandwidth opens up novel opportunities for precision spectroscopy of small molecules. Highly multiplexed metrology of line shapes may be envisioned.

Abstract:We present quasi-real-time dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) using two Yb:fiber combs with ~750 MHz repetition rates. A computational coherent averaging technique is employed to correct timing and phase fluctuations of the measured dual-comb interferogram (IGM). Quasi-real-time phase correction of 1-ms long acquisitions occurs every 1.5 seconds and is assisted by coarse radio frequency (RF) phase-locking of an isolated RF comb mode. After resampling and global offset phase correction, the RF comb linewidth is reduced from 200 kHz to ~1 kHz, while the line-to-floor ratio increases 13 dB in power in 1 ms. Using simultaneous offset frequency correction in opposite phases, we correct the aliased RF spectrum spanning three Nyquist zones, which yields an optical coverage of ~180 GHz around 1.035 $\mu$m probed on a sub-microsecond timescale. The absorption profile of gaseous acetylene is observed to validate the presented technique.

Abstract:Broadband dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) based on portable mode-locked fiber frequency combs is a powerful tool for in situ, calibration free, multi-species spectroscopy. While the acquisition of a single spectrum with mode-locked DCS typically takes microseconds to milliseconds, the applications of these spectrometers have generally been limited to systems and processes with time changes on the order of seconds or minutes due to the need to average many spectra to reach a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, we demonstrate high-speed, continuous, fiber mode-locked laser DCS with down to 11 $\mu$s time resolution. We achieve this by filtering the comb spectra using portable Fabry-Perot cavities to generate filtered combs with 1 GHz tooth spacing. The 1 GHz spacing increases the DCS acquisition speed and SNR for a given optical bandwidth while retaining a sufficient spacing to resolve absorption features over a wide range of conditions. We measure spectra of methane inside a rapid compression machine throughout the 16 ms compression cycle with 133 cm$^{-1}$ bandwidth (4000 comb teeth) and 1.4 ms time resolution by spectrally filtering one of the combs. By filtering both combs, we measured a single-shot, 25 cm$^{-1}$ (750 comb teeth) spectrum of CO around 6330 cm$^{-1}$ in 11 $\mu$s. The technique enables simultaneously high-speed and high-resolution DCS measurements, and can be applied anywhere within the octave-spanning spectrum of robust and portable fiber mode-locked frequency combs.

Abstract:Optical frequency-comb-based-high-resolution spectrometers offer enormous potential for spectroscopic applications. Although various implementations have been demonstrated, the lack of suitable mid-infrared comb sources has impeded explorations of molecular fingerprinting. Here we present for the first time a frequency-comb Fourier transform spectrometer operating in the 2100-to-3700-cm-1 spectral region that allows fast and simultaneous acquisitions of broadband absorption spectra with up to 0.0056 cm-1 resolution. We demonstrate part-per-billion detection limits in 30 seconds of integration time for various important molecules including methane, ethane, isoprene, and nitrous oxide. Our system enables precise concentration measurements even in gas mixtures that exhibit continuous absorption bands, and it allows detection of molecules at levels below the noise floor via simultaneous analysis of multiple spectral features. This system represents a near real-time, high-resolution, high-bandwidth mid-infrared spectrometer which is ready to replace traditional Fourier transform spectrometers for many applications in trace gas detection, atmospheric science, and medical diagnostics.
