Abstract:Following the recent trends of globalization and regionalization, the idea of Asia has been revived in political, economic, and cultural fields. This essay examines some of the various uses of this idea in modern East Asian and especially Chinese history. The essay consists of four parts. Part One discusses the derivativeness of the idea of Asia, that is, how this idea developed from modern European history, especially the nineteenth century European narrative of "World History," and it points out how the early modern Japanese "theory of shedding Asia" derived from this narrative. Part Two studies the relationship between the idea of Asia and two forms of Narodism against the background of the Chinese and Russian revolutions-one, exemplified by Russian Narodism, attempted to use Asian particularity to challenge modern capitalism; the other, represented by Sun Yat-sen, attempted to construct a nation-state according to a socialist revolutionary program, and to develop agricultural capitalism under the particular social conditions of Asia. Part Three considers the differences and tensions between the "Great Asia-ism" of Chinese revolutionaries such as Sun and the Japanese idea of Toyo (East Asia), and it discusses the need to overcome the categories of nation-state and international relations in order to understand the question of Asia. Part Four discusses the need to go beyond early modern maritime-centered accounts, nationalist frameworks, and Eurocentrism in re-examining the question of Asia through historical research by focusing on the particular legacies of Asia (such as the tributary system) and the problems of "early modernity.".

Indeed, the Chinese government's continued support for socialism does not pose an obstacle to the following conclusion: In all of its behaviors, including economic, political, and cultural-even in government behavior-China has completely conformed to the dictates of capital and the activities of the market. If we aspire to understand Chinese intellectual and cultural life in the last decade of the twentieth century, we must understand the above transformations and their corresponding social manifestations.

After 20 years, for better understanding and reflection of the serious proposition what is socialism and how to build socialism, it is of both theoretical and practical significance to review this unusual historical process and study the inner roots for the collective collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe.

Abstract:This essay presents a consideration of the past sixty years of Chinese economic development. It argues that in order to understand the success of Chinese development the analyst must consider the prior Maoist years and in particular the structures of social relations; the forms of sovereignty; and most important, the highly participatory mobilizations of peasants and workers in building China. The author argues that the legacy of these earlier policies is key to a proper grasp of the current moment. In this sense, the “dialectics” refer to the ongoing relationship among past, present, and the possible future. Notes * Note: Portions of this essay were delivered at a conference held in 2008 at Peking University entitled “The Sixtieth Anniversary of China's Communist Party and the Chinese Model.” It was revised in September 2009. Elements of Wang Hui's original essay were translated and published as part of the English preface to Wang Hui, The End of Revolution (Verso 2010). The present translators looked at that piece, but opted to retranslate the whole essay from scratch. Each translator took responsibility for a part of the essay. Rebecca Karl brought the parts into a unified whole. Wang Hui reviewed the English translation and made revisions, which Karl incorporated into the final version.

Abstract:The 1990s witnessed a dual process.On the one hand,the universalistic high culture of humanism and modernism fell,the philosophical discourses died out,and the intellectual elite in the human sciences that had been formed during the 1980s virtually collapsed.On the other hand,burgeoning social spaces appeared alongside a rising consumer culture and renewed popular nationalist culture.The discussion of nationalism,mass culture,and intellectual strategy in 1990s' China must be put in such a context,only in which its development and profound cultural implications can be disclosed.

Abstract:This article analyzes the crisis of representativeness in contemporary China from three perspectives: first, the fracture of representativeness is a general political crisis in the world; second, the crisis of representativeness resulted from the crisis of the socialist system in China, the core of which is the decline of class politics; third, theoretical debates and the mass line in the modern Chinese revolution are not only historical prerequisites for representative politics in China but also contain elements that transcend its representative system. In the context of post-party politics, rethinking this political heritage will contribute to the exploration of the future of politics.

Abstract:Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, Volume 52, Issue 2, Page 139-162, August 2023. Interpretations and memorialisations of China's long history, in service of political aspirations of the present and towards the future, have long attracted scholarly attention. This special issue addresses how the curation, performance, and consumption of collective memory provide valuable insight into the interplay between the reconstruction of Chinese identity, cultural modernisation, and the shifting role of heritage and memory in Chinese domestic and international politics. Touching on issues around diversity in, for instance, personal/collective memory or community-based/state-led heritage, we consider how state–society relations inform local memory practices. Furthermore, the articles enclosed discuss pertinent and far-reaching impacts of China's cultural-material changes, transformations, and destructions in service of memory re-formation. Investigating the politicisation of heritage and the material solidification of strategically selected representations of the past, we consider how the notion of "memory infrastructure" contributes to an academic understanding of the interaction between history, memory, and politics.

Abstract:In recent years,there have appeared in mass media,mainly on TV,two kinds of documentaries with two narrative strategies,namely the documentary of "the 60th Anniversary of New China"and the documentary of and "the 30th Anniversary of Reform and Openness". The former describes the years from 1950s to 1970s as "ages blazed with enthusiasm,"making that part of the revolutionary history a natural prelude rather than an incongruous antecedent to the reform history of 70s and 80s. The latter recounts the massive lay-off in the middle of 90s as personal traumatic experiences,and suggests that social identity is attained through healing the trauma. These two strategies not only try to bridge the rift between 70s and 80s,but also adequately account for the breakdown of the "reform consensus"in the middle of 90s. In other words,an emerging mainstream ideology has not only made a smooth transition between the revolutionary ages of 50s 70s and the modernization history since 80s,but has to some extent fixed the internal crack in the regime of reform and openness. In this way,the emerging mainstream ideology is establishing its cultural authority.

Abstract:This article examines centenarian memoirs as a popular cultural phenomenon and through it the promises of post-reform vernacular history. The argument posits that these memoirs are a genre that has been commercially successful through their transformation of self and historical narratives in the People’s Republic of China, in particular, the transformation of these memoirs from vestiges of state-cultivated intellectual confessions to vernacular cultural memories in the popular print market. Focusing on celebrated centenary memoir writers centring on Yang Jiang, the study develops Chen Sihe's conception of the vernacular, emphasising its shifting intersection with the political–institutional and the intellectual elite. The popular historiography emerging from these trans-generational memory “fevers” reveals vanishing modern Chinese intellectual values percolating through the vernacular ethos in the cultural industries of the early twenty-first century. The vernacular has been the post-reform locus for contesting and retaining critical intellectual traditions.

Abstract:While historically and ideologically peripheralised in modern Chinese politics, traditional culture has been discursively rehabilitated by the Chinese communist regime in recent years. Existing literature on this phenomenon tends to focus on the politicisation of culture, that is, how Chinese culture, particularly the Confucian tradition, is appropriated by the regime to legitimatise and stabilise its ideopolitical control in schools and society. This article draws attention to the interweaving but distinct and underexplored tendency of the culturalisation of politics, that is, the party-state's discursive construction of politics in culturalist terms. It examines how politics is culturally constructed, or culturalised, in the official textbooks for the guiding political doctrine Xi Jinping Thought, the teaching of which has been mandatory in schools and universities since 2021. Situating the Chinese case in the broader context of the 'cultural turn' in postmodern politics, this article discusses the implications for citizenship education under China's authoritarian regime.

Abstract:China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution: Master Narratives and Post-Mao Counternarratives, edited by Woei Lien Chong. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield, 2002. xix + 410 pp. US$80.00 (hardcover), US$34.95 (paperback). This volume explores the tension created by the Communist Party's 1991 decision to block public reassessments of the Cultural Revolution, at a time when the Red Guard generation, now in its 50s, has moved into positions of leadership throughout China's institutions. Inevitably, aging Red Guards have reflected upon the experiences of their youth, and are often dissatisfied with an official perspective that dismisses any positive aspect to their years of rebellion. Earlier versions of half of these chapters (on "Master Narratives") have appeared in China Information. These are supplemented by new essays on "Post-Mao Counternarratives". This is a very professional collection of essays. Standards of scholarship are high, and the essays are often provocative and informative. However, although reviewers do not judge books by their covers, consumers often do, so it is unfortunate that this volume's intellectual appeal is undermined by an unnecessarily ugly cover. Bernard J. ter Haar's chapter links the Cultural Revolution to a "demonological paradigm" in Chinese history. He traces the Cultural Revolution's management of violence to earlier practices, especially among the Taiping revolutionaries. The approach is idealist, leading to the odd speculation that modern China's stress on hygiene is a "replacement to fill the emptied semantic categories of the demonological paradigm" (p. 55), rather than a response to the poor quality of public sanitation. Ter Haar's explanation of the Cultural Revolution by way of ancient exorcisms fits poorly with the rest of the volume, which is overwhelmingly concerned with the Cultural Revolution's impact and later interpretations. Nick Knight undertakes to disentangle Mao from the movement which he initiated. Although many regard Mao as the puppet-master implementing a fake revolution of his own design, Knight argues that he was unable to control the movement. In contrast to most commentators, Knight does not treat the Cultural Revolution as a product of Mao's Utopian impulses. Instead, he interestingly argues that Mao's thought grew more pessimistic as the Cultural Revolution loomed, and as he replaced themes of harmony with those of struggle. Anne-Marie Brady examines China's small community of foreign experts from the Cultural Revolution's beginning through the 9th Party Congress in 1969. Rising nationalism turned xenophobic, making it difficult for foreign friends of China to support the movement without encountering a backlash. Many were treated as spies, and Chinese who were part of their personal networks were ill-treated. Some, of the experts were imprisoned, and others left China. At the lowest point, only 59 remained. Brady is nuanced in her handling of the factionalism and personal rivalries among these friends of China. Stefan Landsberger's chapter, "Deification of Mao", traces the Cultural Revolution through changes to the image of the Chairman. Most of the 27 Illustrations may be found in color on Landsberger's outstanding web site. Landsberger goes beyond poster images to include songs and other ritual aspects of the Mao cult. This chapter contains the book's clearest review of the history of the Cultural Revolution, and may be especially welcomed by newcomers. Only 124 novels were published during the Cultural Revolution. Lan Yang analyzes the 24 that have agrarian themes. …

Abstract:Western Political science cannot adequately address China’s development in the twenty-first century. The inadequacy is due to a general neglect of historical methods and an obsession with progressive views in the discipline. As a result, the study of China’s political culture is torn away from Chinese history and loses itself to become another version of modernization thesis. This article calls for the application of a historical politics approach and a poly-chronic view of history to the study of China’s political culture. The article examines four potential core value components of China’s political culture, namely the quest for great unification, the preference for political order, the orientation towards substance, and the deference to authority and hierarchy. Results show that those values have historical continuity and China-specificity thereby demonstrating the value of the historical politics perspective.
From socialist ideology to cultural heritage: the changing basis of legitimacy in the People's Republic of China

Abstract:There has been a shift over the past generation in the moral basis for legitimacy of the Chinese state. The socialist state was legitimated by a sinified version of Marxism-Leninism, watered with the blood of revolutionary martyrs who fought on behalf of the Communist Party to defend the nation from external aggressors. However, at many levels of society, the Marxist legitimation is dead. Instead of claiming to represent the values of Communist revolutionary struggle in the twentieth century, the state is now presenting itself as the carrier and the defender of 5000 years of national cultural heritage. This undoubtedly arises partly from changes in moral attitude arising from the grass roots and partly from government initiatives descending from the top down. There is wide variation across China in the intermingling between the bottom-up and top-down moral impulses, and this is partially connected with different moral ecologies constituted by configurations of state and local political and economic institutions throughout China. In this paper, based on case studies from fieldwork carried out in several different locations in 2009, the author draws a broad map of these variations.

Es behandelt das überkommene Wissen in Philosophie, Geschichte, Literatur, Religion, Brauchtum und Naturwissenschaft. Dabei hat es oft auch politische Implikationen. Die im Ton polemischen „Erörterungen und Erwägungen“ (so fasst A. Forke den Titel) setzen sich kritisch mit der gesamten Tradition auseinander. Insofern lässt sich der Verfasser als Totengräber der altchinesischen Weltanschauung und als Vorläufer des mittelalterlichen Pessimismus bezeichnen. Aus diesem Grund hat sein Werk bis ins 19. Jh. mehr Ablehnung als Zustimmung erfahren, so dass es erst am Ende der Kaiserzeit kommentiert worden ist.

Abstract:China has been a multi-ethnic political polity for over two thousand years. “Culturalisation” of ethnic minorities in peripheries has been a tradition in China deeply rooted in the Confucianism. This tradition resulted in a united-pluralistic polity with a huge population and the non-stop writing history throughout a series of dynasties. The People's Republic began to adopt the policies of the former USSR since the 1950s and gave ethnic minorities more political status, or what is called “politicisation” of ethnic minorities in China. This policy has improved socioeconomic development of minority groups and promoted group corporations but also has strengthened the group consciousness among the minorities. The collapse of the Soviet Union provides a lesson that this policy orientation might provide an institutional basis for national disintegration when internal and external powers work together. Meanwhile, the “equality de facto” has been the goal of official ethnic policy since the 1950s and many policies have been designed and practiced in favour of minority groups, but there also some debate on its social consequences which also need our attention.

Abstract:Through multiple case studies, this essay attempts to paint a general picture of "mediatised politics" in China. The author first discusses several phenomena typical in Chinese political communication, such as government Public Relations training, Internet public opinion guidance, government communication on social media, and regional branding. He then analyses the historical origins of "the mediatization of publicity" and "the public-relations oriented transformation of government administration" in China, and the complex influences they have had on the country's society and culture. With these descriptions and analyses, the author provides a new perspective to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese communication, especially vis-a-vis the relationship between the Party state and media.

Abstract:Research on contemporary Chinese politics can be divided into two distinct generations since its initiation in the early 1960s. The first, produced before the Cultural Revolution, was characterized by general description rather than systematic comparison or sophisticated conceptualization. The second generation, which appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s, assigned greater attention to describing the variation of Chinese politics over space and time, identifying the informal norms and mechanisms by which Chinese politics operates, and developing general theories of the Chinese political process. In a third generation, which is just now beginning to emerge, we should see efforts to absorb the new sources of information now available about China; to sort, test, and amalgamate the competing models produced by the second generation; to integrate the analysis of Chinese politics with the rest of comparative politics; and to study Chinese politics in an interdisciplinary fashion.
