Abstract:The frequency-change square ratio vector (FSRV) is a function of structural damage location and can be easily used for health monitoring; however, how to construct a precise FEM of real structure and then build the benchmark database for damage localization is still a great challenge for FERV-based damage detection methods. In order to overcome this disadvantage, a virtual theoretical model, which had the same eigenvalues with actual structure, was first proposed in this paper by assuming and constructing using the improved restoring force technique according to the acceleration time-histories data for each level of the shear building in health condition. Subsequently, the FERVs came from different damage location of shear building were calculated and used to build a benchmark database for damage location, then damage extent benchmark database was also built following the same procedure. Finally, model assurance criterion (MAC) and normalized modal difference (NMD) were employed as an evaluation index to calculate the similarity between the FSRVs, which came from the actual structure and damage location benchmark database, separately. Then the damage location corresponding to the sample with largest MAC value will be regard as the actual damage location, the damage extent can also be diagnosed using the same process after damage location was confirmed. A numerical simulation was employed to validate the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the proposed method could detect the presence of structural damage, locate damage, and determine damage severity just based on the actual measured frequencies.
