Abstract:In their article "The Theoretical Basis and Framework of Variation Theory" Shunqing Cao and Zhoukun Han re-examine the conclusions on variation theory drawn from Cao's The Variation Theory of Comparative Literature. Drawing on the past three decades of Chinese comparatist practice, the proposal of variation theory in that book is a scientific endeavor from China. China's comparative literature has sustained a focus on comparison of literatures Eastern and Western. And Chinese scholars have long been aware of the heterogeneity of civilizations and the variability in literature exchanges. By demonstrating uses and potentials of variation theory, this thesis attempts to show that variation theory offers a response and potential way forward for the current disciplinary crisis in comparative literature.

Abstract:Although the French school proposed "influence study" and the American school proposed "parallel study" in international comparative literature studies,we should understand that the discipline of comparative literature is still incomplete.Concentrating on the variation in current comparative literature studies would be a major breakthrough,because it represents a new research perspective and method.It opens up a new possibility in theorizing comparative literature in the new stage,namely,heterogeneity and variability research.It not only highlights the differences between human civilizations thus but also promotes the heterogeneity of dialogues and exchanges among different civilizations,thus opening up a new possibility forthe development of literary history.From homogeneity to heterogeneity and to today’s variability,the theoretical exploration of comparative literature has gone much deeper in depth.It is not only a comparative study of literary theories,but also looks at the entire human culture toward another innovative goal.Therefore,proposed by Chinese comparatists,seeking "variations in comparative literature studies" will not only promote China’s comparative literature studies,but also contribute a great deal to the theorization of comparative literature in the new era.Thus the theorization of variation in comparative literature studies might well mark a new breakthrough in the development of comparative literature studies.

Abstract:The proposal of the Theory of Variation of Comparative Literature is a revolutionary change in the basic notion of comparative literature study in China. The present paper has tried to expound the proposal of this theory from the following three aspects: firstly, the proposal of this theory is to correct the misclassification of medio-translatology and imagology by integrating the disciplinary theories of comparative literature; secondly, this article sums up the core issue of academic research, differentiation, by reviewing deconstructionism and cross-civilization study; finally, this article takes heterogeneity as the basis of comparative study and puts forward that variation theory is to concentrate on heterogeneous elements in literary circulation and the variation phenomenon. In this way we may get a holistic consideration of all the elements in literary exchange on the basis of similarity and difference.

Abstract:The representative discussion on "variation" originates from Life Science; however, "variation" also exists in the fields of Natural Science, and Humanities and Social Science. And each of these three fields has certain continuity and internal consistency in their "arche" (?rho chi eta) and "variation" processes. Particle variation, gene variation, and meme variation occur in nature, life, and culture respectively; they all start with "hereditary" with specific structure and evolve into various things that can be perceived by experience in various fields via the "selection" of an "invisible hand." This process is clearly described in natural philosophy and metaphysical realism, which can be summarized as the generation theoretical and dualistic "ontology-variant" variation view. Through a full view of generalized science, a knowledge chain of "variation" is extracted, which is referred to as "general variation theory" in this article. This theoretical concept consists of four closely related parts: basic variation, nature variation, life variation, and cultural variation. Each of them has its own independent question domain and knowledge model; while, at the same time, there is a certain continuous, inclusive, and integrated relationship running through these four parts, thus generating a universal explanatory effectiveness in this sense.

Abstract:Within the former Western framework of comparative literature theories, the justifiability of comparing literatures from different civilizations such as Eat and West was questioned. This was demonstrated overtly that there was no justifiability of comparing literatures of diverse civilizations in the former Western framework of theories. The proposal of the Variation Theory is a conceptual change in terms of the building of the discipline, which enables the study of Comparative Literature to transform from seeking homology to seeking heterogeneity. In other words, not only homology and affinity but also variation and heterogeneity should be the focus of the Variation Theory. Only when these aspects are organically combined together, will the discipline of Comparative Literature be satisfactorily built. The Variation Theory proposed by Chinese scholars is a great innovation and push to Chinese comparative theories and will exert great influence and value on the development of the world Comparative Literature.

Abstract:Variation theory is one of the original viewpoints put forward by China's comparatist Cao Shunqing. This shows that comparative literature studies, especially the study of Chinese-Western comparative literature, is no longer just a pursuit of convergence, but also an exploration of the differences between different national literatures. In this respect, Chinese literature and Western literature belong to two completely different cultural traditions, and the gap between languages is more than similarities, so the comparative study should seek its heterogeneity. Of course, we cannot deny that there is still a certain degree of convergence between different national literatures, but in this sense, especially for Chinese and Western literature, the convergence is only relative, heterogeneity is absolute. The emergence of the theory of variation would point to a possible new direction for international comparative literature studies, which is currently considered in crisis. This is also Cao Shunqing's contribution, as a Chinese comparatist, to the cross-cultural comparative literature studies.

Abstract:Variations as a phenomenon exist in all literatures. Variations Studies in Comparative Literature, with variations in comparative literature as its object of studies, is advanced on the basis of deliberate considerations of the perplexities and issues arising out of the study and development of comparative literature as a discipline in China. Its values lie mainly in 1) that it helps promote the studies of relationships of literatures in the world; 2) that it helps put in order the disciplinary system of comparative literature and improve the structure of the textbooks in this field; and 3) that it clarifies and enriches the scope of comparability in comparative literature studies by advocating comparison of heterogeneity and otherness abased on cross - civilization studies, a complement of the traditional focus on the comparison of identity. Major research methods of Variations studies in comparative literature include studies of variations in language, in reception and in images.

Comparative Literature Studies

Abstract:Abstract Starting with the fact that Chinese literature was absent from world literature in the twentieth century, this article reveals a contradiction in Johann Wolfgang Goethe's prediction. The line drawn between Chinese literature and world literature manifests a hierarchical structure of the existing world literature. Through a brief retrospective of Sino-Western cultural exchanges in history, we are led to the phenomenon of literary variation that usually appears when works circulate out of their original backgrounds, indicating the compatibility of heterogeneous literatures. From the perspective of Variation Theory, a new pattern of world literature's formation that differs from the core-periphery model or literary compromises may get inspired. Resorting to translative variation and thematic variation, works acquire worldness without sacrificing their national characteristics. In this case, world literature will be hopefully formed in comprehensive communications among different literatures.

Abstract:Misunderstanding and misinterpretation are common existence when an item of news is put to its global distribution.On the basis of Variation Theory of Comparative Literature (VTCL) proposed by Chinese scholar Cao Shunqing, the present paper makes a case study on various international news reports on "One Road, One Belt" initiated by Chinese government in 2015.The aim of this study is on one hand to reveal how misunderstanding and misinterpretation happen during its circulation, and to test the feasibility of VTCL in the research of Mass Media on the other.The significance of such investigation lies in the construction of a new path to the sought of difference between heterogeneous cultures and further attempt to build up variation theory of communication.

Abstract:Cross-civilization studies in comparative literature from the perspective of variation theory is classified into similarity comparison and difference comparison. The similarity comparison emphasizes “seeking similarities” on the basis of equal discourse rather than “assimilation” based on discourse coverage. And the difference comparison includes the influence variation in the influence study, the interpretation variation in the analogy study, and the new category of the analogy study-common topics in different discourse. The influence variation mainly focuses on the real but neglected variation factors in the influence study. The interpretation variation enriches the traditional analogy study in two aspects: the heterogeneity and two-way interaction of discourse, and the connotation analogy and over-interpretation of interpretive availability. Common topics in different discourse, a new category of the analogy study, is a breakthrough in analogy study on the dimension of heterogeneous discourse. All these cross-civilization studies make difference comparison valid, which enriches the theories of comparative literature, and is a comparison of “seeking both similarities and differences” in its true sense.

Abstract:This article provides a new thought about the theoritical system of current comparative literature in three aspects. Firstly, it points out the drawbacks and weaknesses of the 1st and 2nd phases of the development of this discipline, namely the positivist and non-positivist characteristic of influence study, and the lack of a "world mind" in parallel study by claiming that there' s no comparability between different cultures. Secondly, the cultural diversity should be highlighted as comparability since we should not only seek the common ground but also pay attention to the differences. The variation theory in comparative literature raised by the present author can help complete the theoretical system of comparative literature. Thirdly, this article points out that comparative literature will enter the phase of world literature, in which Chinese scholars will play an important role.

La literatura mundial ha sido definida como literatura traducida en circulacion tal y como ha sido reconocida por numerosos investigadores en Oriente y Occidente. En otras palabras, si no hay traduccion, no hay literatura mundial. Pero podemos ir mas alla y decir que la literatura mundial es literatura con variacion en traduccion. Sin variacion, la literatura traducida permanece dentro de los limites de la literatura local. Solo al respetar la heterogeneidad cultural y hacer activamente que las culturas se mezclen y solapen puede la literatura traducida dirigirse hacia la literatura mundial. EnglishTranslation is a process of linguistic transformation in which variation is inevitable. And as an act of interpretation, it in essence does not have an absolute criterion: hence creative treason, by virtue of the openness of interpretation, is a phenomenon that attracts comparatists. World literature has been defined as translated literature in circulation, as has been widely acknowledged by many scholars in both the East and the West. In other words, no translation, no world literature. But we can go further, saying that world literature is literature with variation in translation. Without variation, translated literature remains within the boundaries of a local literature. Only by respecting cultural heterogeneity and actively making cultures blend and overlap can translated literature be on the way to becoming world literature.
