Abstract:A series of Co3O4 catalysts modified by Sm were prepared by a combined dealloying and calcination approach, and the catalytic activities were evaluated using CO catalytic oxidation. The Sm2O3/Co3O4 catalysts were composed of a large number of nanorods and nanosheets, and exhibited a three-dimensional supporting structure with pores. The experimental results revealed that the addition of a small amount of Sm into the precursor AlCo alloy led to a dealloyed sample with improved catalytic activity, and the dealloyed Al90Co9.5Sm0.5 ribbons (0.5 Sm2O3/Co3O4) calcined at 300 degrees C showed the highest activity for CO oxidation with complete CO conversion at 135 degrees C, moreover, CO conversion almost no attenuation, even after 70 hours of catalytic oxidation, which is superior to that of Co3O4. The enhanced catalytic activity of the Sm2O3/Co3O4 catalyst can be attributed to the large specific surface area, more reactive oxygen species and Co3+ ion, as well as electronic interactions between Sm and Co.
Novel nanorod Au/Sm2O3 catalyst synthesized by dealloying combined with calcination for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:A Au/Sm2O3 composite was designed and prepared by a simple combination of dealloying a melt-spun Al-Sm-Au precursor alloy in a NaOH solution with calcination. SEM and TEM results revealed that the composite has a three-dimensional porous nanorod skeleton structure; Au nanoparticles were supported in situ and were highly dispersed on the surface of the Sm2O3 nanorods. The experimental results in an anaerobic environment showed that the Sm2O3 support prepared by dealloying has a strong ability to store/release oxygen. The catalytic activity test results indicated that the dealloyed Al91.5Sm8Au0.5 ribbon calcined at 400 °C (0.5Au/Sm2O3-400 °C) can completely convert CO at 130 °C. The CO conversion was reduced by only 4% after 150 h in the presence of high concentrations of H2O and CO2, exhibiting excellent water resistance and the long-term stability of the catalyst. The analyses revealed that the high catalytic activity was attributable to the porous nanorod skeleton structure of Sm2O3, a high dispersion of Au nanoparticles, increased oxygen vacancies and Auδ+ species, strong interactions between Au and Sm2O3, and the strong ability of the Sm2O3 nanorods to store/release oxygen.

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.
Activity and Stability of Co3O4-based Catalysts for Soot Oxidation: the Enhanced Effect of Bi2O3 on Activation and Transfer of Oxygen

Abstract:Bi2O3-Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method and tested for soot oxidation by 02. The composite oxides showed excellent activity under both tight and loose contact when compared with individual Co3O4 or Bi2O3, and the maximum activity was obtained over catalyst with Bi/Co molar ratio of 0.2. The samples were characterized by means of XRD, N2 adsorption, FE-SEM, XPS, FT-IR, C-TPR and O-2-TPD. It was found that Bi2O3 with low melting point deposited on Co3O4 surface could not only promote the contact state between soot and catalyst, but also produce more oxygen species with high mobility and reactivity at Bi-Co interface layer. Oxygen activation channel and reaction pathway were discussed based on the results of isothermal anaerobic titrations and O-18-isotopic tests, which confirmed that soot was more likely to react with lattice oxygen species rather than O-2, especially at low temperatures. The high mobility of lattice oxygen species was attributed to a combination of the O-2-conductivity of Bi2O3 and the accelerative formation of oxygen vacancies at Bi-Co interface. A feasible reaction mechanism over the binary catalysts for soot oxidation was proposed. The stability tests were also studied and the results indicated that Bi-modified Co3O4 showed prominent tolerance against thermal shock, H2O and SO2, thus being a promising active component for practical application. Abstract:The modification of Co3O4 by Bi2O3 significantly enhanced its catalytic performance for CO oxidation. The 20 wt.% Bi2O3-Co3O4 exhibited the best catalytic performance. The results of H-2-TPR and CO-TPR revealed that the mobility of oxygen was accelerated greatly and the ability of low-temperature oxygen activation was the crucial factor to improve the catalytic performance. Bi2O3 entered the lattice of Co3O4 caused the structural defect and lattice distortion, which should be the origin of the high O-2 activation ability and mobility. Structure-performance correlation demonstrated that the low-temperature oxygen activation was dependent on the defective degree of structure, which was determined by the content of Bi2O3 . The catalytic behaviors under different reaction conditions revealed that CO could effectively adsorb on the surface active sites and CO2 could competitively adsorb on the active sites. The ability to supply the active O-2 species was suggested to be a key step. The kinetic data showed not only the amount of surface active sites were increased on the surface of Co3O4 but also the catalytic ability of single active site was enhanced greatly. Active yet extremely durable Co3O4 spheroids of different texture without/with Au deposition for CO oxidation

Abstract:Spherically shaped Co3O4 particles were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of Co(NO3)(2) in n-octanol that is free of structure-directing agents or pore formers. Au nanoparticles (2-4 nm) dispersed on the Co3O4 substrates were fabricated using deposition-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Co3O4 (without calcination) and the corresponding Au-containing catalyst achieved complete CO oxidation at 90 degrees C and 80 degrees C, respectively. Upon calcination, the condensed Co3O4 formed on which uniform dispersion of small-sized flat Au entities (3.0 +/- 0.6 nm) with large Au-Co3O4 interfaces was established, showing complete CO oxidation at 110 degrees C. These two types of catalysts were found to be extremely durable even when operated in a period beyond 70 h under certain conditions. The calcined Co3O4-based Au catalyst can outperform Au/d-Co3O4 in both activity and stability when subjected to a pre-reaction at 350 degrees C for 5 h. The yolk-shell type Co3O4@SiO2 catalysts synthesized by controllable acid-etching of Co3O4 cores demonstrated an optimal Co3O4 core-SiO2 shell interaction and a suitable Co3O4 core particle size for CO oxidation. Both Co3O4 substrates and Au/Co3O4 systems were found to encounter substantial activity enhancement by in situ pretreatment. The pretreatment resulted in (i) transformation of AuOx to Au-0, (ii) higher fraction of surface Co3+, and (iii) suitably lower concentration of surface oxygen adspecies, accounting for the enhanced activities.

Abstract:Ceria modified Co3O4 catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation were prepared by a precipitation-oxidation method, and characterized by low-temperature N-2 adsorption/desorption, TPR, O-2-TPD, CO-TPD and transient-response reaction. The roles of ceria in CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst and the effect of pretreatment on the performance of CeO2-Co3O4 for CO oxidation were investigated in detail. The results show that the presence of CeO2 can increase its surface area, reduce the crystal size of Co3O4, and improve obviously the catalytic activity and stability of Co3O4 for CO oxidation, such as its T-100 is only -60 degrees C. It was also found that the addition of CeO2 can not only promote the adsorption of O-2 and the reaction of adsorbed CO with surface oxygen species to form CO2, but also increase the CO2 desorption speed. The pretreatment method can affect the catalytic activity of CeO2-Co3O4, the catalyst treated in N-2 exhibits higher catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation due to formation of oxygen vacancy. The catalyst reduced in H-2 shows lower activity for CO oxidation although it has more surface oxygen vacancies, because of the difficult desorption of CO2 on the reduced CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst.
Low-Temperature Co Oxidation Over Cuo/Co3o4 Catalysts

Abstract:Copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts have been prepared by co-precipitation method. The prepared samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and nitrogen adsorption to determine the specific surface areas (S-BET). The catalytic activity and stability of samples were investigated for CO oxidation by using a microreactor-GC system. The results indicate that the copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts exhibited obviously higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation than that of individual CuO or Co3O4 with CO total conversion at 80 degrees C and their stability was quite well. The catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by co-precipitation increases by increasing the calcination temperature from 150 to 200 degrees C and decreases from 200 to 500 degrees C. The effect of the volume of NaOH (2.0 mol/L), ageing time, calcination temperature, calcination time, the molar ratios of copper to cobalt and the specific surface areas on the catalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated in this paper.

Abstract:Low-temperature oxidation of CO, perhaps the most extensively studied reaction in the history of heterogeneous catalysis, is becoming increasingly important in the context of cleaning air and lowering automotive emissions. Hopcalite catalysts (mixtures of manganese and copper oxides) were originally developed for purifying air in submarines, but they are not especially active at ambient temperatures and are also deactivated by the presence of moisture. Noble metal catalysts, on the other hand, are water tolerant but usually require temperatures above 100 degrees C for efficient operation. Gold exhibits high activity at low temperatures and superior stability under moisture, but only when deposited in nanoparticulate form on base transition-metal oxides. The development of active and stable catalysts without noble metals for low-temperature CO oxidation under an ambient atmosphere remains a significant challenge. Here we report that tricobalt tetraoxide nanorods not only catalyse CO oxidation at temperatures as low as -77 degrees C but also remain stable in a moist stream of normal feed gas. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the Co(3)O(4) nanorods predominantly expose their {110} planes, favouring the presence of active Co(3+) species at the surface. Kinetic analyses reveal that the turnover frequency associated with individual Co(3+) sites on the nanorods is similar to that of the conventional nanoparticles of this material, indicating that the significantly higher reaction rate that we have obtained with a nanorod morphology is probably due to the surface richness of active Co(3+) sites. These results show the importance of morphology control in the preparation of base transition-metal oxides as highly efficient oxidation catalysts.
Origin of Extraordinarily High Catalytic Activity of Co3O4 and Its Morphological Chemistry for CO Oxidation at Low Temperature

Abstract:Understanding and then designing efficient catalysts for CO oxidation at low temperature is one of the hottest topics in heterogeneous catalysis. Among the existing catalysts, Co3O4 is one of the most interesting systems: Morphology-controlled Co3O4 exhibits exceedingly high activity. In this study, by virtue of extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the favored reaction mechanism in the system is identified. Through careful analyses on the energetics of elementary reactions on Co3O4(110)-A, Co3O4(110)-B, Co3O4(111) and Co3O4(100), which are the commonly exposed surfaces of Co3O4, we find the following regarding the relation between the activity and structure: (i) Co3+ is the active site rather than Co2+; and (ii) the three-coordinated surface oxygen bonded with three Co3+ may be slightly more reactive than the other two kinds of lattice oxygen, that is, the two-coordinated O bonded with one Co2+ and one Co3+ and the three-coordinated O bonded with one Co2+ and two Co3+. Following the results from Co3O4, we also extend the investigation to MnO2(110), Fe3O4(110), CuO(110) and CuO(111), which are the common metal oxide surfaces, aiming to understand the oxides in general. Three properties, such as the CO adsorption strength, the barrier of CO reacting with lattice O and the redox capacity, are identified to be the determining factors that can significantly affect the activity of oxides. Among these oxides, Co3O4 is found to be the most active one, stratifying all the three requirements. A new scheme to decompose barriers is introduced to understand the activity difference between lattice O3c and O2c on (110)-B surface. By utilizing the scheme, we demonstrate that the origin of activity variance lies in the geometric structures.
Ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 Nanocomposite with Active Lattice Oxygen for Superior Catalytic Activity Toward CO Oxidation.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.

Abstract:Shapes of catalysts to comeTricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) has been much investigated as a potential catalyst for the low-temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide, useful for example in automotive emission control. Although this material is active even at sub-zero temperatures, it is highly sensitive to even trace amounts of moisture. Xiaowei Xie et al. now establish that Co3O4 in the form of nanorods shows higher catalytic activity, and enhanced stability in the presence of water; they attribute these improvements to the high density of catalytically active Co3+ sites exposed on the nanorod surface. Health risks associated with cobalt use mean that this specific material might not found widespread application for air purification, but these findings demonstrate the potential for morphological control for improving the performance of transition metal oxide catalysts.

Enhancing low-temperature CO removal in complex flue gases: A study on La and Cu doped Co3O4 catalysts under real-world combustion environment

Abstract:Designing CO oxidation catalysts for complex flue gases conditions is particularly challenging in fire scenarios. Traditional flue gas simulations use a few representative gases but often fail to adequately evaluate catalyst performance in real-world combustion conditions. In this study, we developed doping strategies using La and Cu to enhance the water resistance of Co3O4 catalysts. Catalyst 0.1La-Co3O4-CuO/CeO2 exhibits exceptional low-temperature catalytic activity, achieving 100% conversion at 130 °C. This enhancement is largely due to the introduction of La, which increases the active Co3+/Co2+ ratio and suppresses hydroxyl group formation on the Co3O4 surface. Cu doping also changes the Co3O4 lattice structure, forming Cu+ as active sites and enhancing the activity at low temperatures. For the first time, steady-state tube furnace and fixed bed were employed to evaluate the catalytic performance of CO in actual combustion atmosphere. Catalyst 0.1La-Co3O4-CuO/CeO2 maintains excellent catalytic efficiency (T100 = 120 °C) under well-ventilated conditions. However, its activity significantly decreases in poorly ventilated environments, due to the competitive adsorption of small molecules at active sites, such as acetone, commonly found in smoke. This study provides valuable insights for designing water-resistant, low-temperature, non-noble metal catalysts and offers a methodology for evaluating CO catalytic activity in real-world environments.
Au/CeO2 nanorods modified by TiO2 through a combining dealloying and calcining method for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts with different TiO2 contents were successfully synthesized through combining a dealloying Al-Ce-Ti-Au precursor alloy and calcining in O2. XRD, SEM, HRTEM, TEM-EDX mapping, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and in situ DRIFTS were used to characterize the structural phases, microstructures, and physicochemical properties of the samples. The results revealed that the TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts prepared from Al89.7Ce9.5Ti0.5Au0.3 had a structure in which Au and TiO2 nanoparticles were loaded onto the surfaces of CeO2 nanorods in a porous framework, resulting in a large specific surface area and a small pore size. The results of an experimental test of the catalytic oxidation of CO indicated that the TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts prepared from Al89.7Ce9.5Ti0.5Au0.3 showed the highest activity for CO oxidation. The temperature required for 50% CO conversion was as low as 5 °C and 98% CO conversion was achieved at 40 °C. The catalysts were stable even after 100 h of catalytic oxidation. The introduction of a small amount of TiO2 into the Au/CeO2 is thought to have created an increased number of oxygen vacancies and an increased concentration of Auδ+ species. This leads to stronger interactions between the Au and CeO2 and more active oxygen species at the surface, which enhances the catalytic activity. The present work further develops catalytic materials with high performance and low cost.
Studies on the Preparation of Co3O4/CeO2 Materials and Their Applications on CO Oxidation at Low-Temperature

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 catalysts are prepared through co-precipitation-oxidation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface areas (SSA) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Effect of the cobalt content on the physical and chemical performance on the compound oxide is reviewed. The carbon monoxide oxidation is investigated in humid and dry conditions. It is found that the addition of CeO2 can decrease the crystallite size of Co3O4, the particle sizes of Co3O4 in the Co3O4/CeO2 composite (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9 /1) is calcined at 723 K and calculated to be 9.5 nm on average and the SSA surface area is 119.8 m2/g. Under dry condition, Co3O4 displays higher activity than Co3O4/CeO2 composite for CO oxidation. On the contrary, Co3O4/CeO2 (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9/1) catalyst exhibits better resistance to moisture than pure Co3O4 does.
A Mullite Oxide Catalyst of Smmn2o5 for Three-Way Catalysis: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Activity Evaluation

Abstract:CO conversion as a function of temperature for SMO and LCO is shown in the graphical abstract image. SMO reached 95% conversion at 150 °C and showed a better CO oxidation activity than LCO.

Abstract:Environmental pollution, especially air pollution, has become a critical issue requiring prompt resolution. Herein, we have synthesized a novel catalyst composed of nano-octahedral γ-Fe2O3 in situ loaded with Au nanoparticles through dealloying Al-Fe-Au alloy ribbons combined with calcination. The formation mechanism of this unique morphology was analyzed, and the catalyst's performance was evaluated through CO oxidation reactions. The test results indicate that the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst can completely catalyze CO at 50 °C, and exhibits excellent stability and resistance to H2O and CO2 toxicity even under harsh testing conditions. Systematic characterization results reveal that the exceptional performance of the catalyst can be attributed to several key factors. These include the large specific surface area, well-defined nanoporous structure, efficient transfer of free electrons at the interface facilitated by the strong interactions between Au and the γ-Fe2O3 support, as well as the high concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface-active oxygen species present. Additionally, the potential conversion pathways of CO over the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst were elucidated, revealing that they follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen mechanisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. This study is expected to provide novel insights into the green synthesis of highly active and stable nanoporous catalysts.

Abstract:CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2, CuO/CeO2 and CuO/SnO2 catalysts were prepared using impregnation methods. The catalysts were characterized by means of H2-TPR, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and CO-TPD studies. CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 catalysts have three reduction peaks, α, β, and γ. The α peak is attributed to the reduction of CuO and Sn4+ species on the surface of Ce0.7Sn0.3O2, β peak to the reduction of bulk SnO2 and surface Ce4+, γ peak to the reduction of bulk CeO2. Only a small amount of CuO (6%) is needed to form the active site for CO oxidation, and the excess CuO forms bulk CuO particles which contribute little to the activity. Combining the results of CO-TPD, XRD and catalytic activity measurements, we propose that the well-dispersed CuO, which can adsorb CO, is responsible for low-temperature CO oxidation. The bulk CuO that cannot adsorb CO contributes little to the oxidation activity. Among the supported CuO catalysts, a synergistic interaction between CuO and Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 makes the reduced CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 catalyst easily oxidized, thus it can easily supply active species. This is responsible for the highest CO oxidation activity at low-temperature.
